Using 35 Apexis Shards at either Forge Camp on the plateau summons an elite demon which drops an Apexis Crystal :).

These are mostly the same named demons that wandered around the camps last patch. Tank, Healer and a dps and you are good to go

We kill all four dragons and only one of them dropped a Apex crystal.

We also killed one summoned demon and a summoned rock giant and they each dropped an apex crystal. So the drop rate is not 100%.

the dragons themselves don't drop these, you need to kill all 4, combine their scales to make a cloak and then turn them in to Keller for a crystal

Am I right to think that these are basically useless after you have gear better than what the Ogri'La Quartermaster offers? Do they serve any other useful purpose?

I was pleasantly surprized how easy it was to put a little party together to farm these. Grabbed a couple of people needing the group quests, one more who was farming for a Depleted Sword and a guildie... I asked up front if everyone was cool with me need-rolling the Crystal if we used my shards (I had over 1k by the time I hit exalted), and no one objected.

We did 2 of the Fel Whip demons, one guardian (all dropped crystals) and the four dragons for the cape to trade in. Took maybe 45 minutes, a lot of which was travel time to and from the crystal spine. In gratitude I passed on all the greens that dropped. Got my boots and was on my way.

Next chance I get I'm gonna try that again for my X-Bow.

You or your party will in most cases need stacks Apexis Shard to get Apexis Crystals, if not stealing other parties summon mobs. There are many ways to get shards dailys, mob farming and pick them up from between the crystal stuctures.

Best way is to think about Apexis Shards and Crystal as coins, but you need to get stacks of shards to doing harder stuff to get Apexis Crystal.

Apparently useless in later levels since even the greens dropped with summoning elites would be more valuable.

Six ways to get one of these:

Take 35 Apexis Shards to an Apexis Monument to summon an Apexis Guardian, who drops an Apexis Crystal.
Take 35 Apexis Shards to a Fel Crystal Prism to summon a random Demon (Braxxus/Galvanoth/Mo'arg Incinerator/Zarcsin), who drops an Apexis Crystal.
Make and trade a cloak for it:
1. Take 35 Apexis Shards each to:
  Furywing's Egg to summon Furywing who drops Jet Scale of Furywing.
2. Insidion's Egg to summon Insidion who drops Insidion's Ebony Scale.
3. Obsidia's Egg to summon Obsidia who drops Obsidia Scale.
4. Rivendark's Egg to summon Rivendark who drops Onyx Scale of Rivendark.
5. Stitch the Scales together to create a Deathwing Brood Cloak.
6. Take the cloak to Sky Commander Keller and exchange it for an Apexis Crystal.
Buy and trade a cloak for it - they are BoE, but good luck finding one on the Auction House these days.
Complete the assault on Bash'ir Landing and kill The Grand Collector, who drops an Apexis Crystal. This is the only realistic approach that does not require Shards.
Do that thing to buy a thing to summon a guy who drops it:
1. Complete the assault on Bash'ir Landing.
2. Buy an Accelerator Module from the Aether-tech Master for 35 Apexis Shards.
3. Use a Proton Accelerator Controller to summon one of Bash'ir's Harbingers (or maybe even Bash'ir himself), who drops an Apexis Crystal.

Since I didn't see any notes on the Bash'ir landing event, here's what I've found:

-Happens every 2 hours, in my case shortly after even-numbered hours (6:05, 8:05, etc).
-Swarms of mobs appear, gradually increasing in strength. Individual mobs will periodically run to the Skyguard rangers at the crystalforge, you have to collect them so they don't kill your NPCs. Stronger enemies will also have more aggro on the rangers (as a healer, weak AOE ticks were not enough to peel them off)
-After fighting the first wave for about 2 minutes, an elite miniboss will spawn, you get a short break once it's dead and the Aether-tech Assistant flies in.
-Another wave, next miniboss is a set of stationary pillars, when they're all gone Aether-tech Adept shows up.
-In the final wave, the Grand Collector appears but takes some time to become an active mob. He needs to be picked up quickly when he does, and kept away from the NPCs so he doesn't kill them.
-Aether-tech Master will fail to show up if all the NPCs die, even if you kill the Collector. I finished with all rangers dead and the 2 aether-techs alive, that was good enough.

At either 20 minutes after the hour, or possibly 10 minutes after the event ends, all the remaining Skyguard pack up and leave. If you're going to use multiple Accelerator Module you have to make it quick.

I got one of these today as a drop. I got it from doing the quest Fel Whip For Ghak.
It was a drop from the mob I killed to get the whip.

What do they do? I have one and don't have a clue - wowhead, here and thott all tell you how to get them, but not what they do...

These are used to purchase the Blue+ rewards from the Ogri'La Quartermaster at revered and exhalted im sorry for saying this but i teeny tiny bit of intiative and youd have all found this out on your own .. anyone who couldnt figure this out needs to have a long look at themselves and stop asking zammy/thott etc to lead them through the game by the nose lawl.

They're used for money from the Ogri'la quartermaster. Kind of hard to believe you have one and don't even know what it is for. Considering to get one you need 35 regular apecis shard to summon the mob that drops them.
