The spell cast by this item is "Teleport With Error", which is a reference to the upgraded teleportation spell "Teleport Without Error" from most editions of Dungeons and Dragons.

Given how inaccurate this item is, I'd assume that the Exodar's inter-dimensional drive is built of the same crystals. I now believe I know why Draenei have that 1% racial hit bonus - Looking at their track record for "creating things that are not accurate", they'd probably stab themselves in the face when trying to eat.

I used this item every time it wasn't on cooldown, and so far I distinctly noted the location wasn't THAT random. Well, apart from the set position in the world as said in the first comment, it actually seems to port you near a possible digsites.
- I was ported in the tree above the vortex in Cape of strangleronce when I had troll digsites here.
- I was ported inside the underground tunnels of duskwood when I had either fossil or NE digsites.
- I was ported in the small catacomb in the Badlands near Dustwind dig when I had dwarf digsites at Hammertoe's digsite.
- I was ported in Dire Maul arena when I had some NE digsites in Feralas.
- I was ported on the hill West of the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands ( the swamp zone ) when I had some Fossil digsite up at the dreadmaul post.
edit:
- Ported to the Steamwheedle Port, when the nearest digsite was in Un'goro - that's a small exception.
- Ported underwater in Golakka Hot Springs in Ungoro when I had a fossil digsite in nothern Un'goro.
- Ported to the hill East of the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands when I had two fossil digsites there : Dreadmaul Post and the Red Reaches.
- Ported to the top of the "innkeper tower" of Iron Summit in Searing gorge. Nearest digsite at Uldaman, Badlands.

This is only speculation, but my guess is that the relic always (?) teleports you near a digsite, hence the "exactly where you want to go", which would then be both true and ironical.
Also, I have never been ported to Outlands or Northrend (yet?).

To Hive'Zora in Silithus

...in the middle of a pack of upper-50's insects. You can't get the Last Relic without being able to get into the Outlands to start with, so dealing with the mobs shouldn't be a problem. Just don't click the item and then wander off to get a soda while teleporting.

I just got this artifact and testing it out whenever I can...

1st use : Fray Island (Northern Barrens) > Nearest Digsite (Stonetalon Mountains)
2nd use: Dark Portal (Blasted Lands) > Nearest Digsite (Dreadmaul Post)
3rd use: Dark Portal (Blasted Lands) AGAIN? > Nearest Digsite (Duskwood Twilight Grove)
4th use: Tanaris (Caverns of Time) > Nearest Digsite (Ungoro Crater)
5th use: Wailing Caverns (The Barrens) > Nearest Digsite (Stonetalon Mountains, Unearthed Grounds)

This item actually is somewhat useful, because it can be used in combat and it is a base cast time of 5 seconds (modified by haste). Among other things, this allows pallies to reclaim their lost bubblehearth!

So I was looking at the new Gnomish Gravity Well and started thinking about respecing to Gnomish engineering. I was still unsure though so I decided to wait till I hear some more on the Gravity Well. Anyways, couple hours later I use this and it ports me to the book that allows for respecilization. I am now a gnomish engineer.

I just used and landed in a tree with someone else who had just used theirs.
I used mine in Tol Barad and they used theirs in Northern Stranglethorn Vale, at what looks to have been exactly the same moment. We both landed in the same tree in Southern Stranglethorn vale, on top of each other.
It seems that it may be random where it chooses to send people at a given moment, but wherever it chooses is where anyone using it goes (unless it was a colossal coincidence that we ended up in the same place).
Can anyone test this please?

I've used this twice hoping to get close to the wetlands for Archaeology as this area can be a bit of a pain to get to quickly as Horde, even though my hearth is in Kargath, lo and behold its plonked me on the broken dam in Wetlands twice.

I've used this over 100 times and have not seen any evidence that it has a pattern to the locations taken and dig sites in the vicinity. Most likely a phenomena similar to the face on mars, man in the moon deal here. Probably pareidolia or patternicity at work.

Did you ever consider that it didn't port you near a dig site because you were trying to disprove this theory? If you wanted to disprove the theory, you would want the Relic to teleport you away from dig sites.
Those who wish to be teleported to digsites are teleported to digsites. Those who wish to disprove this theory are teleported away from dig sites. The way I see it, this item is teleporting people exactly where they want to go.

In the words of Blizz, I'd say "this item is working as intended". :P

I'd say that you might have had something clever going there.... but, I recorded all the data without the preconceived notion that another user would post conjecture regarding patterns and whatnot. So my "desires" were only the pure and wholesome thirst for knowledge and understanding; and not the conflict driven quest to disprove another individuals observations. Nor would I even have the time to test this "over 100 times" since the posting of his comment even if I had the desire to follow such a convoluted path.

I find this hilarious. We usually have a bet going in guild as to where I will end up when I use it. Last time I used it I ended up inside the Hive in Silithius. Thank god i'm level 85, would have been very scary if I hadn't been, well it was a bit scary to see 3 very big bugs diving towards me anyway

Try saying in /s the place you want to go, without punctuation, as you're casting and see where it takes you out. It always works for me, either the correct zone or the closest possible. At the very least, it's fun to try :P

As an ex-scribe, i can tell that scrolls took you either at some location in a faction's city's zone or very close to Booty Bay. Meaning that the relic has more potential destinations, and we have yet to hear of it having the scroll's.

I had just had enough of Archaeology in Outland and figured I'd head back to Azeroth to look for some troll sites, remembering I had just picked up a and wanting to try my luck at getting "exactly" where I wanted to go (as long as I wasn't picky) I figured I'd give it a try. One loading screen later I was at Wailing Caverns and walked outside just as Deathwing flew over and torched the place earning me Stood in the Fire... teleports you exactly where you want to go, even if you don't know where that place is yourself.

I really wish the cooldown on this was a bit lower. Ideally, lower than a hearthstore, since it's with error, and you're going to end up somewhere random. But if the worry of abuse is an issue, why not same as HS... or double? Or even quadruple? It'd still be 2h then rather than the once a day 12h it is now which kind of takes the enjoyment out of it.

Or how about this... 12h cooldown by default, but the ability to knock time off the cooldown by surveying archaeology sites? Maybe an hour or two per successful find/fragment loot. So if you're doing archeology, it becomes more useful, but if you're not and using it as a pvp escape mechanism or something it still has the long cooldown.

Ahh, dreams.

This has been mentioned before but I felt it was worth noting again... The cast time is far less that your hearthstone or innkeeper's daughter, quick enough for a PALLY to BUBBLE and use it. The ol' bubble-hearth is back!

The way this works reminds me of a conversation on Doctor Who between The Doctor & Idris (Sexy) in "The Doctor's Wife":Doctor: "... you know, you have never been very reliable."Idris: "And you have?"Doctor: "You didn't always take me where I wanted to go."Idris: "No, but I always took you where you needed to go."I think I have to agree with the not very reliable part -- only used it twice so far & both times it took me to the same spot (Hellfire Peninsula, behind Dark Portal - 97.45, 47.11). But, will have to also agree with the needed to go part .. there were dig sites there.

I think "Anywhere but Here" refers to "lost in Space" (the movie), where they use the Hyper Drive to escape certain doom from flying into a sun.

Could also be referenced to the infamous "Probability Drive" but I have'nt been turned into a Sperm Whale or a Pot of Petunias'... yet.
