A zone that will remind you of the grand canyon. This zone is good for leveling if you are mid-range level and are a member of the horde. This zone also features a race track, where there are actual goblin pod racers. The race track is found on the Shimmering Flats.

The Shimmering Flats is the ideal place for leveling 30-36, especially for Horde. High concentration of plain mobs and a lot of grinding quests associated with them, in one hub. Very effective. And it gives you something to do after you're done with RFK and before being able to run SM.

Please tell me why 1k needles is contested and has horde guards at Freewind Brave? Its a bit random if you ask me.
Also, Shimmering Flats is a fantastic place to level.

When you reach level 29, go to the middle of The Shimmering Flats to the racetown and pick up all five quests.

Then just start circling the outer perimeter killing everything you see, and picking up car parts along the way. It takes about 2 hours or so (for mage at 32 and priest at 35) to gather up all the quest items. Not bad for a total of 11,300xp and 1g40s.

While you're down there you might as well make your way to the flight path in Tanaris, it's just south of the zone in the goblin town called Gadgetzan.

You need to kill that npc and get a quest starting item loot. Witch opens a 2 step chain quest with nice rewards at 21,32 ;) good luck!

y do they call it thousand needles, i counted about 50 big ones, and theres smaller ones scattered everywhere. so its more like 80-100, no where near 1000 O_o

Note the Buckaroo Banzai reference at the south of the Shimmering Flats, right next to the path to Tanaris. The crashed vehicle is on the other side of the mountain.

Good zone to level in for your late 20 early 30 Horde player, or your early 30 Alliance character at the Shimmering flats. Not really a good zone for Alliance members below 30, as it is mainly a Horde zone. I came here at level 32 with my Paladin, and wasn't able to do all that much before I ran out of quests to do.

I reccomend going to Thousand Needles, only for the Shimmering Flats quests (lvl 29+), because the quests in Thousand Needles do have a low drop rate for the required items and are annoying because all the mobs are too close to eachother.

For any alliance looking for the horde flame for the midsummer fire festival, its slightly to the west of Freewind Post. Can be a little tricky to find.

Thousand needles is a good place to go around lvl 22-23. once you hit lvl 30, you can go to the southwest part of 1k needles (shimmering flats) where the monsters go up to about 35. theres a lot of good quests you can get around the racetrack in the center of shimmering flats. This zone is meant mainly for horde players.

The Shimmering Flats portion of Thousand Needles is a great place for either Alliance or Horde. The mobs range from levels 30 to 35. I've never encoutered elite mobs, but I have read that there is one that occasionally spawns. There is a neutral camp in the southeast where goblins and gnomes each have a few vendors. The mobs in the region drop very decent vendor bait and occasionally you'll get a green item as well.

A word of warning! One or two mobs at a time is manageable in this area, but three or more can get very, very sticky. Be careful to manage aggro and be aware of nearby hostiles that could link with the mob with which you are in combat.

MINERS:
This area is also great for miners! I've seen tin, iron, silver, gold, and mithril spawn here. Gadgetzan, which is located very close southward (in northern Tanaris) also has a mining trainer which can be helpful for those in the 140-150's mining range.

HERBALISTS:
This area also has a small variety of herbs found along the edges of the area.

sadly, the cars (and the goblins and gnomes) are marked friendly to everyone with no faction to their name. you can only control things that you can attack.

How do you bet at the race track in the flats? I know someone has asked above but I did not see an answer. Also, no one on my server (shattered hand) feels it necesary to answer this question. Just plain and simple::: How do you bet at the race track? :::

I got a weapon called a "Combatant Claymore" (blue named) from a Sparkleshell tortise. I didn't see it in the Blue and Unique drops catagory so I figured I'd post that.

The range from bout 24 being the lowest to i think 29. That excludes shimmering flats. In shimmering flats the lowest is 29 and i think the highest is 35. Since ur a 25 shaman you'd be ok going down there. Just look around. The centataur camps would be very good for your level. I'm a lvl 32 shman and i grind in shimmering flats a lot.

Very good leveling tip. for level 31 allience go to shimmering flats and pick up all the quests. Do circles of the area and kill everything in the way. after a few hours you would of levled and finished all the quests.

For Horde levels 28-35 this and Charred Vale are Disneyland for miners. The best and most convenient mining is along the entire southwest edge of the zone, though there are isolated nodes elsewhere. There's mithril to be had in Highperch, and tin and iron in abundance. Gold and silver veins pop up fairly frequently too. In Shimmering Flats, on the other hand, there are a few sparse nodes scattered along the outer rim and a couple in the central crater. I've seen a mithril node in the silithid complex at the south of Shimmering flats too.

Not many of the skinnable mobs skin out to heavy leather, but the rest are perfect fodder for levelling skinning.

if u are a 25-30, this place is one of the best for lvling. it is also great for tin, iron, and copper if u r a miner to. i used my shammy to gain 4 fast lvls in a couple of hours. if u r alliance, the first thing u should do is go to gadgetzan and get the F.P. so u can come back fast and often.

Hey guys, read a comment about the bloodelf mounts looking like chocobos from final fantasy, well theres definatly another link in there, 'thousand needles' is an attack move by the little cactus people in final fantasy, call it coincidence? :P

Never dual a priest, or a warlock on Freewind Post. It is not fun getting feared off a 2000 foot plateau.

Someone asked about what is a creature with a silver portrait this is a rare creature which dosnt re-spawn like other creatures it take a very long time to re-spawn and drops better loot

The rare spawn "Iron Eye the Invincible" has a very good drop rate to drop the rare quality item "Sword of the Basilisk" sells very well on AH and that only rare quality item he drops and he often drops it it like a 66.66% chance

There is an elaborate system of bridges connecting the tops of the big rock formations in this zone.
Known entry coords for paths that lead up to the bridges (there could be more; add in the comments if you find one)
Ramp at 31, 37 marked by a totem.
Patrolled by hostile Grimtotem Stomper Grimtotem Geomancer
Connects to (32, 28) > Splits several ways including (35, 37 - Darkcloud Pinnacle) > Terminates @ (39, 41)

There were other points I didn't visit. But I am pretty sure none of those connect to Freewind Post.

At 43, 55 there is a ramp that will take you up to Freewind Post.
At 47, 53 there is an elevator up to Freewind Post.
