The best place I found to farm these is sunspring post. The scavangers have very low hit points for the silver they drop and drop powder samples nearly as often as the harder mobs. They're also much more concentrated and easier to kill than the demons in osh'gun.

It may sound crazy, but after an hour and a half of grinding for powder samples on appropriate mobs and not getting a single drop I'm starting to think that these items only drop at night, since I have a bunch in the bank from when I was grinding Tailoring late at night. If you're also having trouble with grinding for powder samples, this may be the problem.

It takes approx 1 hour to get 20 Oshu'gun crystals by grinding in Burning Blade Clan Ruins.
On top of that you get approx 1200 Kurani rep (or "Magmar") and 50 warbeads which can be used for either more Kurani (or Magmar) or Consortium rep.

Make sure to note that it is unique to 100.

I was saving it up to turn a bunch in all at once instead of going back and forth for a lot of different turn ins and could not figure out why it was dropping for the person in my party, but not showing for me. Turns out I had 100 in the bank. So save yourself my mistake and turn them in as soon as you have 100 or before.

Been farming Sunspring post and haven't gotten a single drop. I think i had better luck at the burning blade ruins

I farmed these from the Boulderfist Hunters and got only 1 from them after killing about 20, but i DID walk away with a nice tailoring pattern and on my 2nd kill i got Three of Storms too, lucky me but as i said this is a good place to Farm these things, as long as you can withstand their first Throw attack hitting a clothie at 800+

Edit: These also give you rep + to Kurenai, 10 per kill.

I tried everywhere from Warmaul Hill to inside Oshu'gun to Killsorrow Fortress, but the best drop rate I found was indeed from the Boulderfist Hunters at 62, 71 (near the quest NPC named Lump).

The problem is there are only about half a dozen ogres that spawn here. Once you've killed them all, you have to wait approximately four minutes for the group to respawn. In the meantime, there are some other mobs around the area that have the potential to drop powder, such as Clefthoof and Talbuk Stag.

The upside is that every time the Hunters reappear, you should get at least one or two powders per group. Another nice thing is there aren't any casters in the area and these mobs drop Obsidian Warbeads, in case if you need those (they're soulbound like the powders).

I considered going to Sunspring because several people seem to like the mass pulls, but I didn't like the 3% drop rate with the Scavengers versus 12% with the Hunters.

The best way to approach farming this is simply to farm something else like Primal Shadows (around Oshu'gun), Thick Clefthoof Leather (SW of Maghar) or Obsidian Warbeads* (useful for Consortium/Kurenai/Maghar rep).

It's a long repetitive grind and, to be honest, you might as well make some AH money with it.

* = use them for Consortium rep first since you're getting Kurenai/Maghar rep just for killing the ogres

theyre drop is so low its insane just a waste of time unless you really need the belt and legs from Halaa ive spent over 4hours farming for these and havnt got 60 also you do not need to have PVP on you just need to find guys you can kill some guys do not drop it.

well i farmed ogres for about 2 hours and got 6 dust samples. being a rogue that was about 120-150 kills. this wasnt working so i decided to go kill people over by oshu'gun mountain. do it. i got my last 14 samples i needed in under 45 minutes. drop seems highest off the vir'ani raider guys. give it a try.

if you look at the droprates, the boulderfist hunters clearly shine! 13 instead of 8% and there have been enopugh kills to confirm this. I myself farm the samples very much faster there then anywhere else.
the downside is that there are only enough mobs for one man to farm.

For me, the best place to farm these is Sunspring Post, for several reasons:

Mobs are readily available, even with several people farming in the area there will be enough mobs to kill. Putrifiers are casters and are relatively easy to kill. The Scavengers have roughly 1000 HP each, and are always found in groups of three, if you have AoE these will be super easy kills, and each have a chance of dropping crystal samples. Also there's a little plaza with a bonfire with about 8 scavengers, again, easy kills.

I tried the hunters, but there's very few of them, and most of the time, there's other people farming them. Not worth the time.

I was going to post that the same thing about Sunspring Post as being the best place. Been grinding there for the past couple of days and as a hunter, I can multishot and normally kill one of the scavengers with one of the hits and explosion trap the other two. Very quick, fast respawns and each mob drops between 3 to 18s per kill so it's very quick money too. I've found several greens there (LV 63 to 65ish) that sell for about 2g min. Awesome spot but it sucks when others are there trying to quest. I hate having to kill people so they stop killing the mobs (and it has worked several times haha)

You turn the powder samples for stuffs you get in halaa you need more battle token. You get the battle token when you kill opponents in halaa.

If only i had known about this place earlier. I wanted a halaa talbuk asap, but just couldnt get enough powders (farmed for weeks >_<). Went to sunspring and got the last 60 in 2 days (as a holy priest). So farming there is the way to go =P

I like the lake spirits, not very good droprate, but they drop grey stackable items that sell for 10s each ( around 70-90% `) and they have a nice rate for mote of water, a primal sells for 20g.

Thottbot may be screwed up. This is not a lie - for some reason the Powder Samples seem to drop off a lot more at Oshu'Gun. The Raiders and Arcanists.

I spent two days farming sunspring and got 50 samples- and while that was good and well, I went to the surrounding crystals at oshu'gun and farmed and was getting samples to drop every 3 mobs. Plus I had lots of greens drop for me, a blue also dropped from these guys, lots of netherweave, fragments, and their spawn rate was awesome. IMPO, farm near oshu'gun with raiders or arcanists and you'll get more samples.

I did all the Nagrand quests and ended up w/ 5 Halaa Research tokens total, or 100 samples. I'm prob gonna grind on ogres for the remaining 15 samples so that I can get beads for Consortium Rep as well.

If you're horde, kill the lake spirits outside garadar, they die quickly, especially as a hunter since they're caster types and I can train my pet 140 frost resistance... and best of all they drop motes of water which are selling for 20g per primal on my server.

I wanted to get my mount too, so I searched various places and out of all of them I'm the most pleased with the Kil'sorrow Fortress in the southeast corner of the map. I wouldn't suggest farming this area unless you are 70 or have a friend helping you. You'll end up fighting them usually in groups of 2 or 3, but if you have decent gear, and are 70, it's not too bad. I did it using my 70 warrior.
The place is huge and they respawn fast, so even if you're not the only one there, you can just go to another area of the fortress and farm. They drop a pretty good amount of powders, and if you're Aldor, it's makes it even better because they drop Marks of Kil'jaeden frequently. Also, they give 10 Kurenai rep per mob, so I assume they give Mag'har rep as well.

In short, they give rep, netherweave, greens, powders, Marks of Kil'jaeden, around 15s each, and various vendor trash.

Also, if you farm them long enough you will get Fel Armaments too. I even found a 3 of Lunacy card the other day.

the scavenegers, the guys you can one hit..

have been dropping less silver.

if you want just to farm the powder is fastest way i would say the raiders and archs in spirit fields area. if you want other drops while ur farmign then get elementals of ogres

Sunspring is no longer the place to go IMO..they must have changed the drop rate cus I killed about 40 guys here and no drops..good for Netherweave though

I agree, somewhere around 2.2 they changed Sunspring post.

This was probably done because it was almost too good. They gave you 4 things:
Silver
Netherweave
Kurenai Rep
Crystal frags
and the standard Greens.

There is a noticable difference in crystal drop rate now as opposed to a month or 2 ago.

I think the 2.3 patch brought a nerf. I used to kill ogres for the 3 in 1 (Cocaine, Beads, Kurenai) and since the patch I've killed enough ogre's to get 240 beads and not one single powder.

I still need the beads for Consortium so I'm still killing ogres but was gonna be nice to get a free 18 slot bag out of the deal as well but not now. :(

Edit: Boulderfist Hunters still drop them, but another day of farming beads from warriors and mages and no dust.

On my priest I decided to see if they increased the drop rate from the raiders and such around oshu'gun and it didn't seem so but the Kil'sorrow Ritualists and Terrorgaurds inside oshu'gun had a pretty decent drop rate I'd say 8-10%

Cont: Got my bag on my priest after only a day of farming powder inside Oshu'gun (only needed another 60) and now on my warrior going on 2 days and she can't get a drop from anything anywhere in nagrand.

I have a theory. The mobs are sniffing the stuff, and when I beat them upside their head with my Thunder it knocks the crack clean out of their heads. Spell Damage must be more of a torso or brain attack leaving the nostils intact for gathering this "powder sample" stuff.

The answer to my problems. I'm simply an idiot, Unique 100 (helps not to keep 100 in your bank)

I have been doing mag'har rep and i have gotton no samples yet. How do you get this quest. I have been to Halaa but the woman has a blue ? and when I click on her I see that I am unable to accept the quest ?

I just gathered about 40 Samples at SUNSPRING POST.

Yeah right, seems like the mobs around there are dropping it again.

Even the ones with just 1k HP dropped it pretty regularly, although at a lower rate than the usual mobs I think.

By the way, took me like 1.5 hours to get ~40 Samples.

Here's a little note that I don't see anyone else has mentioned. It appears that you can only stack up or store 100 samples. Whether it be in your bags or in the bank, once you hit 100 samples, it does -not- seem to drop at all anymore. Once you cash in your samples (or destroy for some silly reason), you will start seeing them drop again.

I could be wrong, but this is something I've noticed in the past week. Hope this helps.

Been slaughtering Warmaul Hill's ogres for ages last night for rep, beads and Quests, got about 15-16 or so in ~80kills. So its not bad if you can be arsed to keep doing it. 14-15 beads too. Not too bad. At least Mag'har rep is "easier" to earn, Cenarion/thrallmar is stupidly hard as no one mentioned/read up on it until all the Qs had been done already and Cenarion turnins denied (so much for the 40 more plants I had to turn in).

I've farmed ogres till i'm blue in the face, been to Sunspring and not had much luck there either.

Then a thought occurred to me, 'might there be a better drop rate of Oshu'gun Crystal Powder next to the Oshu'gun crystal itself?' Lo and behold this seems to be the case. I guess there is some kind of logic in the game after all.

From what I've found, with the ogres the drop rate is roughly 1 in 10-15, at Sunspring it seems even worse, but at the crystal it appeared to be 1 in 5 or better. Hopefully this is of some help and it doesn't change in the next week making this post completely pointless. Happy farming :)

I got on my freinds account just 2 screw around and lvl him but when i went to the lake right below the throne of elements i got a crap load of crystal powder samples from the water elementals. head there hella worth it!

I just farmed up a Dark War Talbuk over 2 days of non stop grinding so I thought I'd give some info on how it went.

To start I had 100 Oshu'gun Crystal Powder in my bank from farming Clefthoof Bulls. 5 tokens down.

I basically focused on the Sunspring Post area and bear swiped through a 2000 or more mobs.

Heres my stats
