Many people believe that all three OOX beacons are are more likely to drop off humanoids than other mob types. The drop rates are very low whatever the case, but don't seem to support that theory, at least for the Tanaris beacon. If you're farming for this beacon, you might actually be better off in Zul'Farrak than in Tanaris proper.

If you find it difficult to solo, try doing it together with Tooga's Quest (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=1560). Tooga makes a serviceable pet and you turn in both quests in Steamwheedle. Only problem is having to run both again if you die.

It should be noted you don't need to be level 43 to get the drop.

I'm pretty sure the droprates can't be affected by partymembers, but five minutes after this dropped for my groupmate off a pirate in Tanaris, it dropped for me too (off another pirate).
Fifteen minutes later we're in Feralas, and it drops again.. off a bear.
It just seemed too big a coincidence, with all those < 1% droprates.

Maybe it's just me, but I had a much larger drop rate of these beacons when killing Giant Surf Striders (Elite 48-50, Land's End Beach, Tanaris) than I did for anything else. Noticeably more than 1%.

I think the 1% droprate is because a person only gets this item once. If they continue to kill that same mob, they won't get it again, and the ratio of mobs killed to distress beacons dropped goes down.

Unless of I course I am confused on how wowhead works, but I believe this is correct.

The beacon is in the northern part of the mountains directly east of the Gaping Chasm. From the northeastern edge of the Chasm follow the edge of the mountains north and east to the first vale/valley that reaches deep into the mountains with white sand. Follow the vale to the end of the white sand and on the right, leading directly south, is a brown path. Just after the top of the first rise you will find the beacon. It walks to the northern port on the east coast of Tanaris (Steamwheedle, I can't remember) and then takes off. Along the way the chicken braves desert animals but close to Steamwheedle three assassins try to kill it so this is hard to do by yourself. I think you have to go to Booty Bay to collect the xp for the quest, since mine says complete but I didn't get the experience points yet.

I went to Booty Bay and found Oglethorpe but clicking on him did nothing (he is upstairs near the leatherworking shop in a building if I remember right). He was not golden. My quest still says complete but have no idea how to turn it in.

Did you do all three quests? There are three beacons, only one being in Tanaris. The other two are in Feralas and the Hinterlands. If you search for "mechanical chicken," you will find one result, in terms of an item. Click on it and you will see there are three quests. You might have already known this. Sorry if you did.

How in the world do you get this bird to follow you to do the escort?

This was a fun quest as a 44 Druid, and again at 46. I failed at 44 trying this solo, and barely completed this at 46 on my 3rd attempt using the technique below.

The real problem is the last wave of spawns near the beach. The entire camp of human warlocks will add if you're not careful, and the chicken will die almost instantly.

Here is how I eventually did it -

There is only ONE mob in the warlock camp near the beach that will auto-aggro, but the others will proximity aggro once the chicken runs to it. The solution is to run a bit ahead of the chicken and aggro the nearest warlock before the chicken does, then run out of nuke range to pull the mob away. This way you'll only have to fight one nuker instead of the entire camp.

I just did this quest today as a level 48 Hunter with an Elder Mistvale Ape as my pet with thunderstomp....no problems at all...

VERIFIED its way up in the mountains as stated east of the Gaping Casm....

Im on Malfurion Server US if you need some help...Im HORDE of course.

This quest can easily be done with two. I happened to have a 49 hunter and 44 mage with me, so it was a breeze. You can let the bird take hits, it's pretty tough. My soothe animal spell came in handy a lot too (44 druid). Probably the first time I've used it ever!

I just though I would let people know of this quest in detail, so it would be easier to solo it. I did it as a 48 hunter with a cat pet and managed, but I would think it hard to solo without a pet.

First kill all the Yetis around the cave and in the passage to the mechanical chiken, if you go fast you should not meet any on the way out.

The chiken will take left to join the road and will walk all the way to the port for the boat. You will meet 3 patrols. Everytime the chiken stops and seems to hesitate, a patrol is coming.

The first one will consist of 3 yetis just left of the caveexit (about where there is a single gorilla hanging out). Hence the importance of not getting low on live with any remaining yetis!

The second patrol is met on the bridge or there about and will consist of 3 gorillas.

The last partol will be after you turn for the road to the boat and will consist of 4 gnolls. All patrols are about level 43.

If the chiken does not aggro the patrol I suggest just running away from them, as the chiken will not be hurt. It worked for me on one occasion and I did not lose the chiken.

I just did this quest (solo) when i'm a lvl 48 rogue. Actually, i found a bug in this quest, where, whenever you meet the event mobs (i.e. when the chicken shout for alert), you just stealth! The mobs will not attack chicken and just run everywhere to find you. Keep stealth until you walk far enough from them and then you can walk back close to the chicken in normal mode.

I'm not sure if anyone used this trick to finish the quest. But for me, my chicken just run straight ahead. I didn't involve in any battle event and maybe it's the fastest way to complete the quest :P

I completed the quest but died once in the process I was in a group and returned to finish the escort. But Because I died I have to re-escort him once again then I returned to Booty Bay and I could turn the quest in. So if you die while in a group plan on doing the escort again even if it says the quest is completed. Enjoy

Whenever you do an escort quest you always want to let the escortee run ahead of you. If he agros the random mobs or the "event" mobs then you fight. Half the time though he will run right past them and the mobs will never get an attack off and you can avoid most of your fights.

Also if you run ahead fighting mobs there's an even chance the escortee won't join you so he ends up running to far ahead and you fail the quest anyway.

I was trying to find the chicken in the mountains and he wasnt there, looked through all the comment here and when i clicked back to Warcraft it was there. If someone has this problem i guess wait.

I went to the location listed above (60,64) and couldn't find anything. Maybe it's bugged ATM, but I've been here about 15 minutes and nothing has spawned or shown up on my minimap.

i tried to find him, oox-17/tn, but i didnt see the yellow dot, and didnt see him too...
so if someone can apport something that can help me please do so. maybe he is in different parts or something, i dont know :(

I noticed that the mobs will spawn infront of the chickens' paths. If you can clear one group solo, you're golden. As to the other group, you get to the part where you are facing them, kill 1 or 2, not all three of them. Then let the chicken die, accept the quest again, and keep your distance from him as he gets to the spot where you cleared half the group. The leftover mobs will still be there, and you can engage and kill them as the chicken does. Kill them, and then the chicken won't have anymore spawn at that location.

this is wierd i found the little chick and i have attemped to do this quest two times but both times i died. when i rezed and started too walk to the chicken i found it but it doesnt have a yellow mark above its head i dont know what to do. I guess it means someone else is doing the quest but i have been waiting for 30 min. what do i do ?

I was playing this on a level 46 warrior and couldn't do it alone. I would die when the mob of 4 would spawn. I gave in and had someone help me. It's doable.. just maybe not alone. ;)

The chicken is in Tanaris south-east in the Mountains...

Cords: 60:64, when u leave this q you get another q where you shall protect the chicken the way to Steamwheedle port, and if you loose this, you can go back to the chicken and restart the quest.

I haavve the OOX-17/tn Distress Beacon in my bags but no quest in mt log. D I just go find the chicken? Or is there ssomplace I pick up the quest to find the chicken

ahh, yes. I just started this quest umm say about 4 hours ago. Im still looking for that damn thing in the mountains and have yet to even find what it is ur talking about. i spent most of the time going up and down the mountain every possible way. now if some one on Aerie Peak has done this quest, please contact deafdragon, i could use the help finding the damn thing. also just whisper and i can hearth to gaget.

Sooo...Iv'e done the other two quests but for some reason can not get the Tanaris beacon.I've spent about ten hours there killing the recommended creatures that thottbott says will drop it and pretty much everything else. No beacon. Why so difficult?

Just finished this as a 50 pally. Encountered many L40-47 mobs on the way (most weren't quest related, just got in the way). Not too bad at all.

Strangly.. a Sprite darter in Feralas dropped this. The quest started by this Item is very difficult to do alone, I reccommend a group or if you are level 50+ you should be ok.

Makes sure your group turns in the first part of this quest. Otherwise one of you will be standing there unhappy when the escort starts and you weren't on the right part if it because you never turned in the first part before accepting and starting the escort.

At one point you'll get ganked by 3 lv48 scorpions. They can be very tough if you're on the lower side of levels. Getting time to drink water for mana can be tough as well, you'll have time to drink while it fights one of the many mobs on the pathway.

Item to begin the questline found on a sandfury shadowhunter in the zul'farrak dungeon at /way 45, 61 behind the walls walking around in an area at the foot of the mountains. I'm sure this was random, so KILL EVERYTHING! GL!
