This is a hidden quest in the game - mainly for alliance.
This is what you do:
1: Go to westfall, Saldean's Farm.
2: Create a macro with the line /chicken .
3: Target one of the chickens at Saldean's Farm and spam the macro (this might take a while, be patient).
4: Eventually, the chicken will become green-labeled, rightklick the chicken (I presume your not level 1) and you will recive a quest - this quest.
5: Accept the quest, go to "Farmer Saldean" and buy one piece of Special Chicken Feed.
6: Return to the chicken and give him the Special Chicken Feed - he will give you a "Chicken Egg" (you have to pick it up yourself) - this egg is a pet :)

This quest is A H but the special chicken feed is only buyable for the Alliance (you might be able to get it by the cross-faction AH).

EDIT1: The quest will work properly even if you don't /cheer at the chicken.
EDIT2: If I remember correctly it works on every chicken in Westfall, but why bother running all the way just to buy the food? :)

A few additional notes: This quest most likely works with every chicken in the game (I've completed it successfully with a chicken in Theramore and another in Tirisfal Glades.) Also, the Special Chicken Feed is not a quest item so you can easily buy it beforehand.
Finally, once you have gotten the quest, you can /cheer at *any* chicken--not just the one you first used-- to "activate" it to accept your quest.

Also, when the quest is completed it spawns Farm Chicken Egg (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/object=161513) which can be looted for your pet chicken (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=11110).

Quest is repeatable... If someone took your egg just /chicken the chicken enough times and you will be able to get it again.(No question mark above it though.)

horde can do this quest it just takes longer. do the /chicken for a while & the chicken will do it. but u can get the feed on a ah that both alliance & horde use. i got one of these lil guys!!!

For quest completion:
1 copper = 5 experience

So, let's do this:
50000000 experience = 1000 gold
50'000'000 experience is like, a couple of levels.. but too lazy to that math. Maybe like 60->70..

In other words, you can kinda level up by redoing this quest, ALOT. If the quest gives 5 experience, but I think it only gives 5 experience the first time, and the next time it's just the egg that pops up and you don't get any experience. Anyway if you do get 5 experience on each turn in, HF clicking and chickening up to level 70! :P

The egg isn't given as a reward and so doesn't appear in your inventory automatically. You need to pick up the egg from the ground.

I've done this quest many, many times always when travelling through westfall at Saldean's Farm as you can buy the chicken feed right next to the chicken.

I always just use a /chicken macro and spam it, keeping my eye on the chat box.
It'll fill up with:
You cluck around Chicken (or whatever the emote actually says).

keep watching and as soon as you see a line that doesn't go as far as the others, stop. (assuming you have your chat box wide enough to fit the emote's whole line in).

Then you can get the quest.

If there are a lot of low level people, especially ones that don't know about this, they will rush to do the quest and often take the chicken before you, just do the process again. You can hand the quest into any chicken once they are friendly.

Plus, it makes a lot of people's day when you tell them about this :P

The chickens at the southern-most end of Lower City(Shattrath) also respond to the emote, tho i wasnt able to interact with it since i´m horde, but i bet you can use these too.

I was thinking that if you are horde and you really want the chicken egg (small pet) then make a alliance character,get the quest, finish it. Find the mail box and mail it to your horde character :)

You have to have the chicken selected when you do /chicken. Do it enough and it will say that the chicken looks up at you... and it turns green (friendly) and you can right-click on it to get the quest. Once you have the special chicken feed you have to /cheer the chicken then right-click on the chicken and complete the quest. It will then lay an egg which you right-click to loot the egg you use to summon/dismiss your pet! Great quest! I passed up on the pets during the childern's week quests and took the 5 G. Now I have a pet anyway and it only cost 22 copper :)

This is a great quest, a NE ran up to me whilst i was doing it and , /laugh, /clap at me.

Well i waited for each clucking noise to finish worked out at about 50, if for some reason it doesn't work just try another chicken, i ended up using about 3 chickens as i accidently killed the first once he turned back to yellow.

You seem to be able to carry on where you left off with the other chickens.

Great quest though.

Any Hordes wondering how to get the quest done: Do the /chicken thing, and when u are supossed to buy the chicken food, go to booty bay. log out.

for the next part, u gotta be patient ;P

Make an alliance char (or if u alrdy got 1 thats fine), grind some copper, go to westfall and buy the food, then get down to booty bay. (this is the patient part, cause a lvl 1 passing through STV can get ALOT of aggro ;P)

Now, put the chicken food for sale in ah for 2 copper buyout, 1 copper bid.

Log on to your horde. Note: this part requires a friend. reason: u cant buyout your own auction -.- (even if its another faction)

get the friend to buy it, then trade it to u or whateva, go up to westfall/duskwood and there u are! Chicken! ^.^

Here are 2 things you should know about this Q:

1) You don't have to wait for /chicken to end... Just keep clicking it like crazy.

2) You can cheer at ANY chicken... I got the quest in goldshire and used cheer on a chicken on a farm in Westfall (I think it was Saldean's farm).

Oh no, people doesn't seem to know what they're talking about. If an ally spawns the egg via the quest anyone can loot it, including Horde. I just looted it with my orc hunter, as of current EU patch (2006-08-28). Camp Saldean's Farm and wait for an allie lowbie to do the quest and wham, ninja! =)

if you play on a pvp server it'll be next to impossible for you to get an egg,however there is 2 ways

1)someone you know rereolls as ally onm the server and u contact them using somethign liek msn to get the egg prepped for you so u can steal it (that's the more likely way)

or

2) this would have to be the luckiest set of circumstances ever...
an ally comes to the farm and buys feed,clucks a chicken gets teh quest and feeds it,now pray he's on /pvp and kill him and steal his egg :P
or...kill farmer saldean lots,he has about a 3second respawn rate but a 0.1% chance to drop :(

Im just odd and want all the chickens. I found a mechanical chicken on the AH. I think its from doing all 3 of the mech chicken escort quests. So thiers the one in westfall, the vendor chicken in the flats and the mech chicken (not to eb confused with the gnomish battle chicken). Anyone know of any others?

You dont need to do /chicken 100 times or whatever. I got it on the first try of /chicken on a chicken in westfall. I think its maybe "chance on /chicken" like a chance on drop, and maybe I just got lucky.

Got it done as horde. Made a human, got it to level 2, got 20 bronze, and did the quest. Logged back in on my main and the egg was still sitting there.

me too, ran a level 1 dwarf over there and by time got there (and 1 death, grr hate wolves) had made level 2 just from experince opening up the map.

My main was there already. no need to kill anything around if you do nearest the road.

took 7 /chicken for me to get it.

need 25c for the feed by the way, so kill a couple of things first with your new char to sell. (or just sell his clothes and weapon etc hee hee. Naked dwarf chickening around chicken is a sight to be seen.

Ok, this quest is fun and anyone who can make it to Saledans Farm (Westfall (55, 31)) should be able to do it.

As mentioned you must target a chicken at the farm and do /chicken dozens of times.

The easiest way to do this is create a macro by typing /macro in the chat window, then click 'New' - give your macro a name, chose an icon and into the 'Enter Macro Commands' window type /chicken %t Now, drag the icon from the macro window onto your action bar.

Target a chicken with the left mous button, stay close to the chicken and spam your macro like crazy. After a short while the chicken turns from yellow to green and you can talk to him.

Get the chicken feed off saledan and speak to your green chicken again. If you chicken has wandered off, you can simply spam the macro at any other chicken and hand in the feed.

My Human Rogue was the only 1 that got this quest.
When he got it, he didn't have to /chicken 100 times(nor did I know you had to do that).

He was in Westfall, next to that farm with the Harvest Watchers (not the Rusty ones), and I happen to mouseover 1 of the chickens that the mouse cursor changed to the Talk icon.
Curious, I ran over and talked to it, and got the CLUCK! quest.
I was thinking that 1 of the chickens there at the farm had the quest, or was a RARE quest to get the Prarie Chicken.

This was MANY months ago, WAY before TBC. Eversince then I've been trying to figure out how in the hell I did it in the past.
Now I read this, and I feel like a total idiot in 2 ways;
1. Not knowing about this sooner.
2. Killing chickens of this 1 guy sitting there just /chicken spamming at a few of them. I thought he was just being annoying and just spamming for no reason as I was waiting for a friend of mine to un-AFK.

for the horde out there on pvp servers who really want a chicken, you can get this by making a trial account alliance character, make them do the quest and then loot the egg at the end with your horde character. for those with lame computers that means logging out and switching accounts, but us dual core gaming rig guys can run em both at the same time.

though i do feel kinda dirty playing an alliance character, even if it is just to get an item for my horde character

You can get more than 1 chicken egg as long as you do it with different chickens. But its useless because the feed costs 22 copper and you can only sell the egg for 2 copper!

Lol, did this as a hordie in Brill, eventually the chicken "looks at me strangely" and up runs a deathgaurd with an axe. Poor chicken :(

I tried this twice on the Sentinels realm, and both times, the chicken gave the quest in three or four tries. I've been trying it over and over on Doomhammer, and it's not giving it at all. It seems the rate is set differently on different realms.

When you're trying to get the quest with /chicken, it's best to do it in the wee hours when no one is around. Otherwise, invariably, some half-wit will come up and kill your chicken, even (or perhaps especially) if you announce that you're trying to get the quest and apologize for the chicken spam.

How does horde get the Chicken food?

This item is easy to get on your horde alt. Just do the quest on you alliance character and finish the quest. After that the chicken egg should be right-clickable. Quickly log on to your horde alt and right click on it to receive it. You dont have to complete the quest to get the egg its like a chest drop after an ally completes it. You can also get an alliance friend to do the quest for you and let you loot the egg after they complete it.

This quest took me one second to do. I did a macro with the command "/chicken %t" repeated about ten times. I only had to use the macro once before the chicken became friendly.

i was just doing this quest and i got the chicken to go green after like a dozen clicks on my "/chicken" macro
his name went green and a gold ? popped up over his head
i had the feed, so i cheered him, and the ? disappeared and he went back to yellow. wtf?
i used the macro another like half a dozen times before he went green again (and the ? popped up) and then right clicked the chicken and clicked "complete quest" WITHOUT cheering the chicken first.
then it worked.

I thought at first this was some strange April Fools gag, but me being curious (read stoopid) decided to do it anyway. Made a macro and lo and behold I got the quest, fed the chook and hey presto I have an egg. It's a great pet. Cheeper than buying a bloody kitten.

I was in westfall today when a hoardie came by. I bought the feed and did the quest a 2nd time. The egg appeared and the hoardie took it. Yea i was out a bit for the feed but at least i helped the hoardie out. I couldnt have gotten the egg a 2nd time anyway so it was funny.

I was chatting away to my guild members about pets and the guildmaster told me you can get a free chicken and told me how to do it i was like... is this a trick? because it sounded so stupid but i decided i'd be an idiot and cluck at a chicken in southshore next thing i knew the chicken went green and i went to go read the log then it went back again so i got annoyed clucked again and accepted quickly so then i had one funky quest and a free chicken ;P

I was doing this quest and I accidently killed the chicken when I was trying to right click for the turn in. However, all I did was /cheer at another chicken and it let me finish the quest.

I didn't have to repeat the spamalicious "/chicken" dance.

It doesn't matter which chicken you /cheer at at the end of the quest. I /chickened a chicken in Theramore, and /cheered at a chicken right next to Saldean, and still got my egg fine.

as i'm sure you have read, horde can get this. just want to say thanks to the 60 nelf priest who helped my orc hunter get it back months and months ago, and maybe clear up some confusion. i ran around on my mount naked in westfall /chicken at all the chickens hoping some nice ally would do the quest and let me loot the egg. all the lvl 15s that were in the area start attacking me, but i didn't have it in me to just kill them all. then along comes this 60 nelf priest. he mind controls me, shields me, heals me, and then just kept doing that to keep me alive while the noobs attacked me. finally the priest got the egg to appear and i got my chicken. wish i thought to write down your name :/ thanks tho!

Buy the chicken feed before you start /chicken and it's over faster with fewer chances of a *foul* up.

Stand back a bit from you chicken so you don't kill it by accident when you target it. I slaughtered two before I finally got mine. One was whacked when I targeted it to /cheer. Too close. ><

As posted over and over, spam /chicken. Eventually, IN CHAT, it will tell you "Chicken looks up at you quizzically. Maybe you should inspect it?"
If you mouseover the chicken it will now have a chat bubble (might have the ! if you're within level range, I was too high already). Give him the chicken feed, you can buy it off Farmer Saldean, and he'll eat it. Wait a second, the chicken will lay the egg, and you then open and loot it like a chest.

Did this quest last night. Made a Macro with just one /chicken. Went to Westfall, Salean's farm and used it on a chicken. 3 of us did this and it varied, but eventually the chicken turned green and looked at us interestingly. Took the quest, bought the feed from farmer Saldean. Went back /cheered at the chicken and then gave him the feed. Then you right click the chicken to get an egg.

Also, if you somehow lose your chicken like a wolf kills it or something after you've bought the feed, just /chicken another one until it gives you the quest, then follow the rest of the steps from there.

Well... I´m a Lvl 12 Undead Warrior... One day, in Brill, all the chickens appears with the "!" over the head. I clicked one and the quest went mine. I never make the /chicken-macro-whatever stuff to one of them, but that day the "!" appears, I don´t know why.
Anyway... How I get the Special Feed? Is there a way to buy it to a horde farmer? Only Saldean sell the feed? Some way to steal it? I don´t have a friend of the Alliance yet...

Started this in Goldshire ... with people shaking their heads at me wondering what kind of crack I was on spamming my /chicken macro. Dunno if this is a hint or not, but the chicken was standing still kinda waddling in place when it gave me the "look" that starts the quest.

OK -- I did the silly chicken dance and got my pet chicken. Had to start over in the middle because some noob came over and killed my chicken while I was standing there clucking like an idiot. (Moral: Best to do this when no other characters are around!)

Anyway, I got my little chicken and he followed me around. But when I logged out and back in again the next day he is gone. How do I summon him back? I'm playing as a Paladin. Can I not have a pet?

Looks like this has been said, but after getting all the way up to 60 and trying this for a bit on every chicken I saw with nil results, I figured it wasn't possible, that it was a hoax.

Then I randomly decided with a reroll level 13 to make a macro of it (after I learned the wonder of macros), and using it makes this take literally 20 seconds. In this order, do:

1) Go to Westfall, just south of the northern entrance you should find the Saldean farmstead and the farmer standing outside his door. Buy some of his special chicken feed.
2) Create your chicken macro. Type /macro, click create new, name it/icon it whatever you want, then in the contents type /chicken, copy that, press enter, paste it, and repeat until you run out of room. It should look something like this:
/chicken
/chicken
/chicken
etc.
3) Select a nearby chicken, and stand on top of it, or very close by. Drag your macro into an action slot, then spam click it. In about 3 seconds the chicken will turn green. Once it does, talk to it to recieve a quest.
4) Quickly accept the quest (don't read it or you may have to cluck again), talk to the chicken again, and complete the quest.
5) Right click on the egg that pops up and you'll get your reward: your very own Prairie Chicken!

This quest can be done as many times as you feel like (altough more than one egg is pointless and they are soulbound and sell for only 2c) and if any player makes the chicken turn green all players can talk to it to complete the quest. So if you want to help someone out to get a chicken you can do all the clucking. :-)

It awards no XP, no rep. Just the egg.

I'm not sure if it is the new patch or because I only have a 10-day account but I cannot finish the quest (I have done it before when I had a different account). I go to feed the chicken, it tells me I should check under the chicken, but there is not egg.

Well, I know part of this works on the Horde side. HAHA. It doesnt give the quest but it will say "Chicken looks up at you quizzically. Maybe you should inspect it?"

Maybe I did not get the quest because im lvl 56 too high, or maybe it doesnt work for Horde. But all i know is it says that and the chicken stops moving when you do it.

I did this on the Chickens at Far Watch Post in the Barrans, Cords (61,24).

I thought i'd give a try at this quest around Odesyus landing in azuremyst - you can start it at the chickens running around there as well. Though, buying the special chicken feed seems impossible in this area.

Are you a brother of the Horde ? Have you paid your hard earned gold in neutral AH to get the precious Special Chicken Feed ? Have you used your "connections" inside alliance to get it ? Have you ridiculed yourself running around in alliance farms, spamming /chicken ? Have that hillarious (let's be honest!) sight brought the attention of guards and alliance palladins defending the honor of their cities from the creepy chicken thief and start ganking you altogether ? Have you later found out that there -indeed- are chickens in Brill as well, so you started the same ridiculous /chicken dance there ? Have the lowbies there followed you in awe and wonder asking "dude wtf are you trying to do ? "
Fear not brother, you are not alone !

However, this quest as of 14/10/2019 is officially not available for Horde.

Horde can buy special chicken feed from a vendor in Brill and complete quest with the chickens there. Learned this after trying to kill the Alliance vendor in the hopes I could loot chicken feed off him then getting jumped by a bunch of nearby allies who responded to their farm being under attack

Just to clarify: Horde can not initiate the quest using emote. Despite the fact the chicken responds with Chicken looks up at you quizzically. Maybe you should inspect it?, it never turns friendly. So, don't bother chasing Special Chicken Feed. Here is the GM response:

I've looked into this for you and found that in Classic, CLUCK! is an alliance only quest. You're on a pvp realm, so creating an alliance character for this isn't possible without deleting all your current horde ones. However, that does mean that if you wait for an alliance player to get the chicken to lay an egg and then gank the player before they can loot it, you can loot the egg. That's free for all. That's pretty hard, but it can be done, at least. I hope that helps! :)

After spamming this for 15 minutes, I realized that you should not do this on a tameable battle pet. I went to a regular chicken and it worked pronto.

For the record I did this quest and it says in the quest to do /cheer, not /chicken and then it drops the egg

4th time was a charm. It took 3 chickens and 10 minutes of clucking.
You CAN and should buy the Special Chicken Feed from Farmer Saldean before you start so it's in your bag already.
Do not right-click on your chicken until it's green. You will kill it.
Do not target the chickens to the west of the house. The coyote spawns and respawns and will kill it.
Have the feed in your bag when your chicken turns green. There is a very narrow span of time to make it green and feed it.
As soon as it turns green, right-click, get the quest, right-click again and feed it.
Don't right click on your chicken feed, you'll eat it and have to buy another one - and start clucking again...

XP formula is mostly accurate - EXCEPT - level 8 the quest only gives 5 XP.

Has anyone confirmed that this quest works for Horde in WoW Classic? The chicken does eventually "look at quizzically" but never turns green to give me the quest. Also if they are close by, the guards in Brill attack the chicken after it responds, leading me to think that it must be considered an Alliance NPC at that point.

So I made a /chicken macro and did it for a few minutes until that got boring. Read quest, /cheer at chicken that immediately turned green, got it's quest, gave food, got egg. Forget clucking at it!

Find some Special Chicken Feed and return to your befriended chicken. When you find it, /cheer at it before trying to give it the Special Chicken Feed.

The chicken looks up at you and then starts to scratch its claws into the ground. You think it is spelling out a word, but you are not sure what it is. Could it be... S-A-L-D-E-A-N? Before you can ask, the chicken turns away and goes about its business.
