Can anyone confirm this with screenshots? When looking at stats & bonuses this seems balanced. I would gladly wear this one in TBC as a mage without feeling overpowered.

This is the so called 'Tier 4' item set for Mages. You can obtain these items by defeating raid bosses, they drop tokens you can sell to special vendors for these items.

The vendors are https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=20613 and https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=20616, depending on if you chose The Aldor or The Scryers as your faction.

The locations of the drops:

Gloves off The Curator in Karazhan
Collar off Prince Malchezaar in Karazhan
Legwraps off Gruul the Dragonkiller in Gruul's Lair
Pauldrons off High King Maulgar in Gruul's Lair
Vestments off Magtheridon in Magtheridon's Lair

These hard to get items are not the best currently ingame, but as they're epic and have a high level, they are still strong. Especially the set bonuses seem to be more useful than previous ones on other sets, also because you only need 4 to get the bonuses, so you can replace the last one with a better item of your choice.

Yes Gruul's Lair is a 25-man raid but I think its probably around ZG level because it is one of the only raid instances you can get into without a flying mount, because Karazan needs a flying mount because of the attunement and so do most of the other instances. Gruul's Lair and Some other instance (I forgot the name and I'll try to update that) don't need a flying mount to do. I'm not sure that means these don't have an attunement but this will probably be your first raid encounter.

If you want raw percents, the 4-piece set bonus takes 7.5% off the total cooldown of the spells it pertains to.

Alright, with all the bickering going on here its hard to obtain truth from lie... The stats are nice, that point has been well proven... as far as functuality for certain specs... well, lets take a look at what we've gone over thus far...

Elemental (deep frost) -- Very big advantage for the turtlers. - 40 sec cd on ice block is reeeealy helpful (especially combined with Ice Floes talent), its like making u even more invincible (giving ice block a cd of 3:20, down from 5:00). Its a good bit for pvp because you save 2 talent point that were previously used in Burning Soul and put them in more efficient spots. Plus when your barrier falls you wont have to be scrambling to finish that last frost bolt. Very good for Frost/fire. Depending on how deep you went (if you have blastwave or not) this set could be even more helpful. Personally if i ever went deep frost i would stop at barrier and put the rest in fire.... gotta have some dps lol. the pve bonuses are good because it just help keep u alive if you grab aggro, again a plus of having ice block more often.

Elemental (deep fire) -- This set is only so-so for deep fire/frost mages as youll only really get the bonus for blastwave, unless u did get deep enough into frost to get block its a bit of a help and it seems like a good tree to me (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/talent=RZVgMzcccoxoZcAMcobxsb) so use at your own discretion, but its really up to you. Seems good for PvP but only so so for PvE... without the proper traits in the right areas you dont get too much of the bonuses and you'll want the extra threat offset from Burning Soul anyway...

Arc/frost mages -- with 41/0/20 (its beyond me why anyone would even bother getting Slow in the first place... but that's besides the point) it is an obvious benefit from the set bonuses. Arc missles should never be your primary dps (as element said, its only used during clearcasts) so you dont lose your cast time. Plus the POM -cd is nice, but what are you honestly going to use that with, fireball? big deal, ur fireball is weak. Tbh, this set doesn't seem very useful for Heavy arc/frost mages... you can find something better. PvE is a sticky situation because you get the interupt immunity, and that's nice but other than that... you may not need more than 2 pieces. put the other slots towards a different set imho.

Now for the good stuff... :)

3 minute mages -- For those of us that go arc/fire this set it obviusly the biggest help to. For starters, anything that would be able to let us cast instant pyro more often is a beautiful sight. Plus this set up usually puts us in the center of the fight, doing any and all aoe/multi-target spells so the -4 sec cd on blastwave is a big help. Again, the 2 points any smart fire mage put in Burning Soul, can now be put elsewhere to maximize DPS. I am personally not 70 yet, but this is the tree i will be using when i hit the PVP (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/talent=ki0VcRbdbGZVgGzc0coxo) Now.. Whether arc/fire and this set is really useful for PVE is a different story... using POM more is a help, but not necessary and you'll want the lessening of threat from burning soul anyway... Although the interrupt still does help although i admit i dont use frost bolt ever because i hardly need to... Hopefully you wouldnt enter any raid like MC with this spec anyway...

Well, any other trees that i missed? So all in all, it always comes down to what type of mage you play and what you're doing... saying this set flat-out sucks is a bad idea. But saying it's the flat-out best is wrong too... pros and cons are there so look at the facts, look at the points ive made and see if it's really worth it or not :)

Looks aside (because its reeeeally hard to be able to wear the perfect outfit and still function bad-ass like) the best belt for a mage would have to be the Girdle of Ruination. https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24256#00z

Notable differences between the maulgar belt and this one...

Pros for the Girdle - Red/Yellow sockets, 20 crit rate (about 1% crit at lvl 70), 2 more spell dmg.

Pros for the Belt - Yellow/Blue sockets (lots of blue gems blow tbh), +5 armor. +3 stam. +8 int.

Theyre both equally difficult to obtain... 1) due to the crazy mats and cost of the girdle and 2) most guilds havent even made it into gruul's yet, much less downed maulgar yet...

i will personally be getting the Girdle, as i love crit too much for my own good i think. plus stick a nice little potent noble topaz and a gleaming dawnstone youve got yourself another .4% crit. WOO

EDIT- meh, now that i take a closer look at the blue gems, they arent sooo bad... 8-10 spell penetration or 9-12 stamina. its nice, dont get me wrong... but thats if you're going pvp... my mind set has been stuck in Raid mode for the past 3 weeks so i often overlook the awesomeness of +12 stam or the destructivity that 10 extra spell penetration can bring against a warrior or rogue... its all in the mind O_o

id still rather have crit tho :P

The 4 piece bonus reduces the cooldown on Presence of Mind, Blast Wave and Ice Block by 13.333...%. I am dissapointed that this only affects talent spells; and only 3 of them. Imo, this bonus is not as great as other bonuses and should be upgraded. How can this compete with spellfire/spellstrike CRAFTABLE bonuses? I would like to see the bonus changed to something more compelling like:

4 pieces: Reduces the cooldown on all mage spells and abilities by 12%.

Of course the 12% can be finetuned during multiple QA cycles, but this allows other mage spells and abilities to be affected that may or may not be talent specced into. Assuming 12% is what is finalized, the following spells have their cooldown reduced by what is in parentheses:

Frost Nova (3 sec)
Fire Blast (1 sec)
Cold Snap (72 seconds)
Evocation (58 seconds)
Blink (2 seconds)
etc..

"ZOMG OVERPOWERED" Really? Think about it..

The set bonuses are a disappointment for a heavy fire/heavy frost/elementalist mages that mostly PvE, as blastwave and iceblock serve a lesser purpose here than in PvP.

That being said, the items themselves still make them worthy of all pre-kara and kara mages to drool over.

Plus, the set looks baddass.

Worst set ever, I'd pick the warlock set over this even if I don't get the set bonus's mages get ripped off time after time. For PvP and PvE you can find items that are way better then this or even craft them. What I'd say is take off all the spirit and give the pieces more other stats to make the item more worth-wild.

Crafted spellfire or frozen shadoweave are better than t4 sorry it's just the way it is and warlock's 2 piece t4 goes nicely with either. Think of crafted gear as being t4.5 it's just better, any way you look at it for PvE and raid +damage.

This set is a joke. A mage can get much more sufficient with sets as "Warth of Spellfire" + "Spellstrike Infusion". Also arena rewards as vindicator's silk boots and vindicator's silk cuffs is the way to go until a mage gets tier 5 and beyond. Offcourse the only set back to what im suggesting is that both sets luck stats. This set is better for endurance battles.

If you are a raiding mage and using Wrath of Spellfire and Spellstrike Infusion sets, you dont need this set at all. There is a huge armor, stamina and Int difference in favor this T4 set, but in a raid you rarely need extra Stamina and Int since your main duty is dps, nothing else. I suggest using the Spellfire and Spellstrike sets until getting T5 tokens. However, If you are comfortably farming Karazhan and Gruul's Lair, adding this set to your arsenal won't hurt.

okay if you ever needed confimation that blizzard hates mages check out this set.... spirit onall peice WTF.... mages have virtually no use for sprirt.... next screwover is that the chest is rather very hard to obtain and sports only spell penetration in addition to damage (go run hero mgt lol) which his epically worthless. it may just be because i am overgeared now but looking back at teh ovetrall stats and damage on this set i really feel bad for us this gear is far to hard to obtain for its epically medoicre to bad stats..... WTB mage gear buff
elminate spirt pls add extra dmage, more crit/hit lol
oh yeah and now that u can get glad gear for tokens DO EET nearly all of teh glad peice are better for both pve and especially pvp how dumb is that?
or even if you not into that get spellstike/battlecaster/w/e those tailoring sets are.....
in conclusion this set is so LOL worthless and blizz needs to fix early mage raid gear
i also feel that the set bonuses are kinda lame but to a lesser extent

Goes very well for PVP also. Fireball and frostbolt no longer has pushback making these very nice. Picked up the chest, legs, and shoulders last night in my guilds gruul/mag combo night. 3 pieces of t4 in one night :O

it really isnt true that Blizz hates mages, personally I feel they love mages!

Just think about it, the Spellfire/Spellstrike sets are so much better, unless you need the extra int from t4, wich you really wont untill you can get the t5 if you know how to handle you mana.. :) That is if you are a 375 skill spellfire tailor.
Both of theses sets are easily obtainable, especially after 2.4 when you can buy primal nether off AH. You dont ever have to do an heroic to get these sets.
Just farm as much of the primals as you have time/patience for and then do dailes to get the money you need.
I got both spellstrike parts in the same week, 1.5 weeks farming as a total.

The t4 I see only as something for mages who aren't tailors, or haven't maxed their tailoring skills.
So as a full spellfire/spellstrike the only t4 I'd bother about is the shoulders.

Concerning the spirit on the t4 as an arcane pyro mage I can get 60% mana regen while casting (and any mage can get 30%).
With the arcane mages' mana regen you wont ever have to go OOM with the t4 (even on AB - AM rotation). But mana shouldn't be a problem for any mage, unless you are really undergeard.

As for the 2 set bonus, why do you need 100% chance not to lose cast time, in a raid or 5 man? You wont be taking that much physical dmg anyways.
And on a raid specced mage, you'll have 75% chance not to lose cast time on fire spells, wich is by far enough. I dont have any reduced chance to lose cast time on Arcane Blast and I hardly ever lose cast time on that in a raid. Just dont use it in meele outdoor... :)
And the 4 set bonus, it wont raise your dps to where the spellfire/spellstrike is even if you are PoM-Pyro, and the 40 sec reduced CD on Ice Block? I remember a time when IB was only for a frost mage, and anyways how much difference do you acctually think it does to have 9 min 20 sec CD compared to 10 mins?

Well, there is one good use for the t4 now though, when you can get PvP gear from them and before that I'd say I would've gone for t4 over spellfire/spellstrike for PvP.

this has some high stats which is somewhat good for a non-tailor arc mage(like myself) i jump between 61/0/0 and 40/21/0 for raids and do about the same, all the other mages i've raided with wear the crafted and are usually frost but when its stat heavy, you can convert your int into damage and socket for hit/crit/damage/etc plus you've still got your weapon, wand, boots, belt, bracers, trinkets, and rings to help with the stats you're lacking
