Actually it doesn't really suffer. Mana /5 is great, yes. But have you ever used Spirit Tap?
I've played a shadow priest since public release of WoW, but then I retired him for a year, to roll a rogue. Reason being that I can dps with a rogue all I want. Can't say the same for a Shadow Priest.
But with 2.0 Patch, I started playing my priest again, so I geared him back up with the Legionnaires gear. Currently, he only has 179 Spirit. But I PvP with him without a single thing of Water. None.
I get so damn many killing blows, that Spirit Tap is up constantly. When it happens in between kills, you can't complain about 200% mana regen rate.
And you know as well as I, that as a Shadow Priest, you do not have to be sitting there casting constantly, cast after cast. It might be just VE,SW:P, Vamp Touch, Mindblast, Mindflay, then find new target.
I am glad they threw the spirit on there. You can make up the other items with mana/5.

In case you where wondering about why the stats on this set are so poor it is due to the fact that these are not the final stats. They a currently set up for a lower level item.

In my opinion yes, mp5>spirit for pve. But nowadays, since the talent update in patch 2.0, +damage = mp5 on a shadow priest it also means +mp5 for the priests group. and with 600dps easily obtainable even with purely quest gear thats equal to the amount of 30mp per second which is 150mp5 almost double what i have as my healing spec at the moment (holy/disc for Karazhan) so these days ebony flame gloves > gloves of delusional power :P

I have an unbuffed Spi at 148 at the moment with 343 bonus damage and around 12% crit.
The gear is pretty much all instance blues. Nothing special...

For anyone who's complaining about spirit tap never proccing, you're either lagging too much or just have poor timing. With the addition of Shadow Word: Death, I almost always get the killing blow. Just guage how fast the groups are dps'ing down the target, when you feel close Mind Blast and then immediately SW:D I usually get about 2300+ burst damage non-crit (though I have +15% from talents) in my mediocre gear. The groups I'm in only have to stop moving before bosses. Otherwise, it's mob after mob nonstop. The bonus healing/mana Shadowpriests provide is enough to sustain just about every member of the party aside from the MT. Even then, the Off-heal is able to take care of them until the bossfights where I drop SF.

The problem I see is that Shadowpriests are kind of shunned from groups and that most people don't realise what we offer post 2.0. That includes from Holy/disc priests who don't want to fight for gear drops.

For people to say that SP's don't benefit from this set or that MP5 would be better, I completely disagree. The +spi is absolutely fine because the mp gain from vamp touch is gonna make up for the rest.The ability to almost always have the KB on every mob is a enough to keep ST up from start to finish, and with Shadowfiend on a 5 minute timer you're topped off again just as you begin to get low.

And to the guy up there that said he has to hold back his dps with a shadowpriest, maybe you'll want to respec. As I stand, I'm currently -45% threat with fade on a 24 second timer. Factor in the Hypnotists Watch https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=25786 for boss fights and I doin't have to hold back at all.

This set has everything I could ask for.

Set Bonuses (from a shadow priest's perspective):

First set bonus translates to an average of 9 mana saved per spell at the current 6% proc rate, which varies from roughly 5% saved down to 1-2% saved on a per-spell basis. Not a huge bonus - will translate into something in the range of 2-3 extra flays in the process of emptying your mana.

The second bonus is quite amazing, however. 40% proc rate, 3 second tick - keep your SW:P on, and it should be up most of the time on boss fights (98% chance of it going up by the end of one talented SW:P, 80% chance of it going up by the third tick). Due to VT, this not only does more damage, but also regenerates mana - it actually potentially generates a significant fraction of the mana of the previous set bonus from the VT regen, in addition to the increase in damage caused.

As a shadowpriest mainly doing pve raids/heroics I can say for sure that unless they buff this set I will most likely never use any of the parts. I have the full frozen shadoweave set, which in every way beats this set.
I personally go for int+damage+penetration as main stats, crit is secondary and spirit... well hardly have any extra spirit at all atm.
It looks nice for a dis/holy dmg priest if those exist, but seeing as this set is obtained though hardcore pve it doesn't look useful at all.
Set bonuses is the only thing I feel I'm missing out on.

As for the previous posts my opinion is that the spirit tap talent is utter useless in non-solo pve, blackout has however saved party members from death lots of time in heroic already.
But of course all players have their own way of playing, thus needing a costumised build

no offense but some ppl fail to see how this set sux in high end raid PVE.
im not talking about shadow ownage pvp wise.

this is a dmg set, its not made for shadow build at all.
spirit tap is not that good in a raid instance, remember u can invest those 5 points some other place.
crit raiting for shadow priest is not needed that much. remember talant gives u crit that u cant find anywhere in any gear.

u still need to build an optimum 7-8% hit rating with spells.

now about the set:
the items them self suck, big time. random rare epix from some heroics, random epix (non set) from gruul. megtheridon are way better for shadow spec. not to mention this is T5 and random epix at that lvl will be even way better than gruul (which should match t4)

the insane thing about this set is the set bonous. if the proc is high enough it would be worth nerfing some gear for the sake of it.

sorry i belong to a high end PVE guild, shadow preist showed his value pve wise nowadays. heal priest is good too.
but i fail to see any thing in deep diceplen or holy dmg other than pvp... no offense :P

This set is really only good for smite priests. Spirit and +crit are nearly useless in a raid situation for a shadow priest. Please note that this is raid gear obtained from raiding and designed to be used, amazingly enough, for raiding.

In the situation it is obtained from and designed for it is absolutely horrible. 90% of Shadow priest damage comes from non-critable spells (MF and DoTs).

Shadow priests would be better served if spirit and crit were completely removed and more sta, hit and dmg were added... maybe even some penetration. Considering the stupid health requirements for a lot of the raid bosses currently out, the lack of sta on priest gear in general is troubling.

The only thing I would want this set for is for my pathetic attempt at grinding as a holy priest between raids.

Shadow priest raiding has changed a lot. With itemization having practically no mp5 shadow priests depend on their damage output to regen their mana.

The set bonuses are awesome as they give a chance to make the priest more mana efficient. The pure +dmg however could use a buff IMO; sockets make up for some of it but sockets should be icing on the cake not making up for low +damage.

Crit is nice, combined with the crit talent but it's not essential. At least there's some hit on it. I'd rather see crit replaced with MOREDMG but I think that's the general consensus by raiding shadow priests.

Although I must say it IS fun to crit mindblast and crit shadow word death right in a row and watch your aggro spike. After raiding with my current spec I have a greater appreciation for crit but I'll still take more +damage over crit any day.

Just as an fyi to dawni about the stats you stack for pve shadow here's what I do.

I stack damage
I stacks spell hit to 6-7%

Those two are equal priority

I stack int/stam

Crit and spell pen are about equal priority because I usually run with 1-2 warlocks in my raids and curse of shadows takes care of your penetration issues.

It's nice to have spell pen around for mobs with high shadow resist and when you have no warlock but hit > pen IMO

I'd love to see some pen on this set but I'd be happier with some more hit and less crit.

and of course....more damage :)

This is a Disc/holy damage set, they need to give priests a third set tailored for shadow. Face it, despite not being as extreme as prot/holy/ret paladin gear differences, the three primary ways of speccing priest (holy/disc healing, disc/holy damage/survival, and shadow damage) require vastly different stat allocations to be effective.

Create a set that has partially broken up (ie +damage/healing AND then a chunk of +shadow damage) spell damage to retain a small bit of versatility, with 0 spirit, and MP5. Giving a raid shadow priest (smart people love shadow priests, in moderation) spirit is ALMOST as bad as giving the melee classes (rogue/warrior) spirit in their tier 0 sets, come on blizzard, I thought you were on a good roll with the greens stat allocation.

Actually, just gimme the models and the item level of this set, and make it of the Nightmare set (stam int and shadow damage), and I would love you.

As of 5/7, this set has been upgraded on the Test Server.

The gloves gain 4 sta, 3 int, 3 spi, 4 dmg/heal, and 3 hit rating.
The helm gains 6 sta, 4 int, 4 spi, 5 dmg/heal, and 4 hit rating.
The pants gain 6 sta, 4 int, 4 spi, 4 dmg/heal, 4 crit rating, and 3 hit rating.
The robe has an additional 6 sta, 4 int, 4 spi, 5 dmg/heal, and 4 hit.
Finally, the shoulders have 4 more sta, 3 int, 3 spi, 4 dmg/heal, and 3 crit.

This gives the set a total of 150 sta, 158 int, 130 spi, 246 dmg/heal, 86 spell hit rating, and 35 spell crit rating. The sockets remain identical. This is helpful to priests with 5/5 Shadow Focus, seeing as how 86 spell hit will take them over the hit cap. Alternatively, this allows priests to save a few talent points from Shadow Focus and put them somewhere else.

Even considering the changes, the set isn't really well-designed for Shadow priests. The spirit is useless unless you have Meditation, and the predominance of yellow sockets means that it's leaning a bit more towards a crit build, which isn't so great for raiding - only two of our spells can crit, both of which will be on cooldowns of 8 seconds or more untalented as of 2.1. Furthermore, it lacks any amount of mp5, which is a crucial stat for shadow priests. The Tier 6 Absolution Regalia (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/itemset=674) is similar in that respect, with a large amount of crit, yellow sockets, and spirit, but at least it has mp5. I believe these sets are more designed for "lolsmite" builds, that focus on a disc/holy split and rely on use of Smite and Holy Fire (with talents such as Divine Fury and Searing Light).

first of all, this set is nice, and the bonuses are very nice for raiding. the spirit helps for mana regen, although more damage would be better. and, just to let you know, crit isn't useless for shadow priests. when you crit with MB or SW:D, it provides more mana from VT, meaning that you can continue to dps for a longer period of time. in fact, i have 2 priorities for my shadow priest
1. at least 76 hit rating
2. at least 10% crit without talents
with the 15% bonus i get from talents, i always have a 25% chance to crit with MB and SW:D, and i can dps longer than any other shadow priest in my guild, because they don't focus on crit at all. although i can't make anyone have a specific build, i suggest you take the time to think about incorporating crit into your build, because with it you will be more efficient in raids.

On a side note, it's quite entertaining that this is the shadow damage set and thus it's item set number is 666. Just another easter egg hidden in there by the insightful programmers at blizzard. :D

EDIT (reply to below post) so it's mere coincidence that the item set that was meant for the priests that preach death, darkness, and suffering was set to 666? Somehow I find that terribly hard to believe, but we'll never know unless someone from blizzard tells us, so it's nice to think that it was intentional ^_^

The 2-set bonus on this doesn't seem to be consumed by Holy Fire if the Relentlessness is proced from Holy Fire, and so you can spam 140-mana Holy fires for the 15 second duration of the buff. I was testing this out on Dr. Boom, and it happened some of the time as of patch 2.3.4.

Regarding the Spirit on these pieces, I'm wearing two pieces of it, and I'm getting 10-13 mp5 and even more out of casting per piece.

The Relentlessness procs all the time, and it's equivalent of gaining 150 mana. It averages out to about 30 mp5. With some other spirit on my gear, I've got 310 mana per 5 out of casting with no buffs at all, and 100 within the rule, plus the aforementioned average 30 mp5. It's not insignificant.

I have a question.
I want the 4 set bonus. BUT i already know, that the Shadoweave robe and the shadoweave shoulders are better than their T5 counterparts. So the question is, wich should i replace to get the 4 set bonus, Shoulders or my robe?

EDIT// Just did the math, and found out that if you want more stats (int and spirit in this case), go with the robe. If you are a spl dmg #$%^& like me, shoulders are the way to go. (Or its really your call, the difference is the stats and one point off spell dmg.)

I find the set good, very good. I might be a noobish shadow priest, but when I'm raiding, I use MB and SW:D alot, all the time, tbh. I do this because I have a crit % at around 37% (buffed) and when I deal a crit, I do more mana efficiency than MF, so this set is good for me.. However..

Change the looks on this, t4 and gladiator set! I am, have been, and will NEVER be a healer! So I don't wanna be an angel .. preferable a devil or demon or something!

Seriously, Blizz need to evaluate what they're doing on tier sets. Raiding shadow priests don't want spirit at all, only healing priests with meditation (generally). We mainly want shadow dmg > hit > Mp/5 > Sta > Int > crit imo (crit is relatively useless).

Reason being we regen mana through mind flay/VT/SW:P spam and plain plus shadow damage is the best stat (as that's all we deal). Pure shadow damage uses less "item points" leaving us more points to distribute to stats we actually need. If you say that SP are needed to heal in fights, wrong. "If" they have to, they switch to +heal gear before the pull. They are better utilised in shadowform for mana/hp regen to the whole party.

Please fix this set Blizz = /

Anyone ever consider the fact that it's damage and healing? Sometimes shadow priests have to pop out of shadow form to heal in tight situations. Also, not that it matters really, what about nelf priests and their starshards?

after our fade was made useless, our shield nerfed, and our ve as wel im close to givin up on my 70 shadow priest, honsestly a 109 dmg? cmon my staff has more than this whole set, i mean if u want people to play this class give us a break, screw crit rating and give us a +dmg set, ya it looks badass but right now my gear gives me like 1.2k +dmg, and u guys want people to actually go after this set? for all 109 that it gives? i think not, try again

Shadowweaving is being down ranked
from: 3/6/9/12/15%

to: 2/4/6/8/10%

then they are also increasing the cooldown on Shadow Word: Death from 6 seconds to 12 seconds.

Then they are also fixing a few bugs with Surge of Light, so ALL spells that crit should all have a chance to procc it now. Touch of Weakness, and crit Heals from Holy Nova dont procc, but will after next patch.

Then they are fixing a bug with Smites casted with the Surge of Light procc, since the smites actually had a chance to crit, but wont after next patch.

Other then that, Holy/Disc isnt getting nerfed, not like Shadow.

Holy/Disc priest that have Surge of Light, should be able to procc it more often now with Holy Nova, and Touch of Weakness.

The only upside I see to shadow losing 5% shadow damage, is they might be able to cast Mind Blast and crit with a 5% less chance to peel aggro in raids.

Since shadow priests have no form of damage clearcasting except inner focus, the first set effect makes it worth it to "spam" mind flay just so you'd get a cheaper mind blast. I'm not going up against shadow priests or anything but except mind flay, their damage spells are not quite mana-efficient so this definitely helps to keep DPS stable in long boss fights.

SWP is the basic shadow priest DoT really, I don't need to say much. But I suggest you only use the spell dmg bonus on vampiric touch or mind blast rather than a regular mind flay.

Some people seem to have misunderstood the set bonus. It's 40% chance per tick that next spell cast within 15sec will do up to 109 extra damage. That does not mean a constant 109. the bonus is for one spell only, not all spells withing 15sec. If you have sw:pain on all the time and spam mind flays you can see that 40% of your mind flays will get that bonus as it ticks every 3sec. So on average every 7,5sec you get the buff that lasts one spell. Ofc it gets better if you fight multiple mobs and can have sw:pain on multiple targets.

i am a shadow preist and i get groups all the time now that i am 70. It may be that i am in a talent specific guidl and all f our preists are shadow and all of our warlocks are destruction, but when we raid, the extra shadow damage and the +109 every few seconds from SW:P is really great also, but what else is good with this gear for Xtra shadow damage?

Add oil and proper use of pots on top of your raid gear and you wont even have to consider being mana efficient in raid... you allready are...

Add misery to the group mana regen (5% spell dmg to the target from ALL spell sources) and the raid dps will grow dramatically

I heard claims that shadow priest are nothing more than mere mana-batteries - yet time and time again i find myself in top 5 of the dps in 25- man raids and with 4K MB (which is a decent crit for me). Claim one more time shadow priest aren't raid or mana efficient and my reply would be Reroll to something you can comprehend...

first off all
most of you are talkin rubish..
Frozen shadowweave is utterly useless in higher lvl boss encounters.. couse of the many aoe abilities from bosses where yah need at leats 9k health to survive.. and the @#$% amount of stamina on it (chest is decent rest just sux balls) nice for kara but thats it.. and yes you have to sacrifice spelldmg for survivability

Mindblast is efficient if you have over 1k (buffed) shadow dmg.. couse then you get enough mana back to survive... if you dont.. dont bother in using couse you run out too fast..
and when yah get aruond 1100+ unbuffed (what I have) you can have unlimited mana with just MF SWP VT. (wich is ncie for example on first phase of alar, so you have full mana and fiend left for nasty 2nd phase)

and on a side note.. vampiric embrace.. pff if you have a little spelldmg you almost never use this spell.. only on non agro bosses like Lurker.. or you overagro liek mad...
leave the healing to the healers..

Wow, I agree with the dude above me. I am in t4 and with a few t5 level extras and I am both mana efficient and can cast all my spells. I get put with our healers cuz I regen both mana and health so they just worry about healing the rest of the raid. If you are running out of mana your cast order sux. Threat can be an issue if there isn't a pally around. For the most part I make top five in dps and heals as well as having high survivability. My gear and guild are not the biggest or best. If you can't be mana efficient in t5 your spec must suck or something. Hell I am at-least mana neutral in t4. In t5 i could start a fight with no mana and work my way to full. Oh btw for those of you complaining about spell hit on this stuff, shad priests top at 74 or so cuz of talents. The set needs less spell hit, it is a waste until the next expansion
