I know how to play the class just fine. You're in denial.
Cookie-cutter builds are cookie-cutter for a reason. They're the best builds. The proof is everywhere. Take your damage meters and check your DPS with every build. Hell, find a simulator. People have written tons of programs that simulate damage rolls for all sorts of specializations and spell combinations.

This is a resource webpage. Resources are intended to help others. I'm not going to lie to them just to make myself feel better. Fire is better in DPS and if you want better DPM, you Scorch.
To say otherwise is blatantly false with the vast mathematical proof that floods the official WoW forums on a weekly basis.
Lying to the countless Mages who rely on this website, among others as a resource for bettering themselves, their setup and their playstyle isn't right.
You can delude yourself all you'd like, but all you're doing is trying to justify your continued use of a build that's now focused on survivability, NOT damage.

Just because you refuse to see the truth doesn't mean it doesn't apply to you, or to anyone else.

Oh, and telling me I need to "Learn2Play" is as re-hashed and uncreative as it is petty and pathetic. You're the one who needs to figure out what Mages do. Mages do damage. Get a damage build.
And stop rating down my posts.

In regard to your last post:
If you actually did the math, you'd know that the co-efficient nerf shaved off about...13% from Frostbolts, as compared to 10% from Fireballs. So, that's a bigger hit right there.
And Frost BURST DPS requires Shatter, which isn't viable in raids, and has limited viability in 5-mans, especially after the nerf to Frost Novas and their ability to withstand critical hits.
It's not ignorant at all. It's true.

This isn't a brag post, but I'm typically topping the meters in all 5-mans I run.
I have +693 Fire Damage. My +damage to Frost would be something like...653 with other equipment that I have.
I switched to Frost one day to try out in the Arenas and when I went into a Heroic Steamvaults run, and I was barely beating the PALADIN TANK in damage.
I did my best to maximize the use of Shatter. I timed my Frostbolts and sync'd them up with my Water Elemental Freeze so they'd launch and crit, I made sure to follow up every Shatter-affected Frostbolt with an Ice Lance. I'd use Frost Nova whenever it was up to get extra Shatter criticals and boost my damage. It didn't help.
Why should I have to have 1k Frost damage to out-damage a Paladin?

After reading all that gibberish about how frost mages can't dps a worth of crap compared to a fire mage, it's true, frost was always ment to be the survivability spec and also mana efficient, it's all about what you want from your class, mass amounts of damage and yelling "I'm OOM" after a minute of continuous scorches, or going the full fight never needing to mana pot and keeping up the damage.

OT: I am currently liking this 2/4 piece bonus, 2 more seconds on evocation would be most beneficial for any mage that isn't dumb enough to get caught in an attack that would cause it to break, and I agree why do warlock's get 6% and mages 5%? Get with it Bliz no-wonder I moved onto Vanguard..

Oh And by the way, 846 base frost damage, I can out dps any fire mage on my server, Dath'rama that isnt part of a certain centerlink guild..

I must say im suprised that no1 have noticed the spirit. It's almost as much spirit on this set as stamina. (135 sta 116 spir)
I really hate spirit. Why do Blizzard insist to put spirit on mage sets? It's totally useless for a mage (useless for most classes and not good for those who can actually use it).

I rather have 10 more spell dmg than 116 spirit. The warlock set is way better. And yes spirit increase the mana from evocation... /care

ps. I agree with Turanis, fire is best for dmg and I also have 33/28 build :)

Decent raiding set except that the 4 piece bonus ignores scorch-spam mages. Taking all the basic fire raiding talents in addition to the 10 points for improved and empowered fireball leaves you unable to take arcane meditation and makes it extremely difficult to even fit in clearcasting, which is almost a necessary talent for mana-intensive fights.

But who knows, frost damage might be the rule by the time we get around to collecting this set.

Obviously later fights will take more mana, nuff said. Current my Evo does only give me back about 4k, but I also don't blow my whole bar every fight or even during some bosses because that would me I'd be pulling aggro with FB spamming or just wasting mana Scorch spamming. Expecting a mana-intensive fight for me means turning off Molten- and turning on Mage- armor maybe even throw in a Pyro. I think that if I had to Invis.-> switch to +spirit weapons-> Evo-> switch back, Resume fighting... for an extra 10-20% mana I'd feel silly. Moreover some bosses can see Invis. or have AoE's that may break your Invis. or Evo at which point you're SOL/just wasting time/you've just screwed yourself for 10mins of the fight using your lame weapons.

I'd say kick up Evo. % in lieu of channel time, or drop CD time.

Also... the thing coming out of the headpiece isn't that cool, T4-6 all are kinda drab with bad hats. How about a little more going on downstairs instead of just a neat dress pattern with average shoulders-style.

P.S. Why no Troll love in the models? :(

P.P.S. The 'Lock 2-Set lends itself to them basically healing/gaining mana all the time, not wasting stat points in spirit and then having a set bonus to take advantage of said wasted points. I'd take more intellect over spirit and keep my crappy Evo. knowing I gained a tiny bit of mana and crit%, both of which can help me pew-pewing longer.

1 spirit will give you more mana in any fight where you can evocate than 1 int as well. 1 int gives a minor amount of crit though (and possibly an even more minor amount of spell damage with spellfire and/or arcane spec) while spirit gives 0 damage. But if mana is what you're looking at 1 spirit is 16 mana per evocation while 1 int is 15 mana per bossfight. And that's when you use molten armor with 100% in the 5-sec rule, if you get out of 5-sec rule at any point and/or use mage armor (depending on the fight) spirit becomes even better in terms of mana. But then again in most fights mana isn't an issue and if it is learn to bring your mana potions as well as recruiting more shadow priests ;p better than gearing with less damage and more mana.

You seem to forget the fact that this is a 5 piece set which means you still can equip things to these slots 2 rings, 2 trinkets, wrist, back, boots, belt, and neck so thats 130 extra spirit plus any extra spirit from your other gear making evocation return more mana than you accounted for when you first posted.

Something I have been wondering about... the Gem that most Mages prefer is Runed Living Ruby, which is a Red gem. However, all items in the tier 4/5/6 Mage sets have Yellow and Blue sockets. Give me Red sockets with a decent socket bonus any day.

Any guesses as to Blizzard's reasoning behind the Blue/Yellow sockets?

As a fire mage myself, I tend to go with whatever socket blizzard throws my way. I usually don't socket to gain more stamina, becase I feel that isn't a worthy socket bonus, however, something like spelldamage socket bonus, I tend to throw veiled noble topaz into yellow/red and stormy star of elune into blue, obviously when I hit around 17% spellhit, I stop throwing veiled in and start throwing potent noble topaz in instead, also when I hit around 70 spell penetration I stop throwing in stormy and start throwing in sparkling star of elune.

About "Fireball being only dps of fire mages", I must ask you to try playing a fire mage and comparing your dps with Fire Blast to your dps without Fire Blast, and I assure you that Fire Blast is a huge amount of a fire mage's damage no matter how you look at it. As for arcane mages and "Arcane Missiles is the main part of an arcane mage's dps", well, sorry to say this again but, I must ask you to try playing an arcane mage. As my guild were learning Al'ar (quite a while ago now) I felt obliged to help out the best I could, so I spec'd arcane to up my dps a bit, and I stayed that way for a couple of weeks, however, I already had an arcane mage in my guild who told me a rotation to try out, and this was AB->AB->AB->AM->FireBlast->Repeat, as you can see, there are 5 casts in this rotation and only 1 is arcane missiles, this was infact the best rotation I found for even dps to mana consumption (obviously better dps would be AB spam, but crap for mana, and better mana consumpton would be to use AM every clearcasting, but that would decrease dps). However, whilst I was in MC/BWL, obviously I was frost spec as this was the only choice mages had back then, and back then it was rare that I used fire blast, I constantly was casting frostbolt, meaning that this bonus would've given 5% more damage back then, I don't know for sure right now, but I'm pretty certain the mage class hasn't changed enough to remove that kind of thing.

So you see, although frost mages do probably get around 5% increase to overall damage from this bonus (which, may I add, might not scale with spelldamage), fire and arcane mages do not get 5% increase in damage, or anything of the sort.

With the implementation of patch 2.3, Evocation will change from increasing your Mana regeneration by 1500% to restoring 60% of your total Mana. Thus, the 2 piece set-bonus will give an extra 15% Mana for the extra tick, resulting in a total of 75% Mana restored for a full Evocation.

With spirit's usefulness decreased for mages due to evocation returning a percent of mana, I believe that blizzard should take a hard look at how much spirit is in this set and do a bit of tweaking.

184 spirit on mage gear that does nothing since evocation was changed in 2.2 i beleive you can say the priest buff still thats like at most 20 sp buff i'd much rather have stam/int or crit spell dmg or some hit or anything to get rid of spirit. And spirit is worthless arcane for pve is dead pretty much its all fire/ice or ice/arcane.And spirit doesnt help regen it does when you not casting but if you not casting you not doing dmg so gg to that.

And yes priest buff does give extra spell dmg for spirit but im a human mage and i get 10% more spirit and i get like 10 spell dmg boost from it i would much rather enjoy more stam/int or spell crit/hit/dmg.

All tier 6 sets for clothers have 1391 armor, but the stats are diferrent
New items added in 2.4 are bracers, boots and wrist
These all drop in Sunbwell Plateau, new zone in 2.4

Laser monkey, Do you PUG a lot? Its hard for me to imagine someone using your strategy in Hyjal/BT. From the math Ive read, that strategy wouldnt work even if you had 2 Spriests in your group, just too mana intensive and really sounds like a burst strategy. I'm not flaming you, I am really curious. It's hard to judge the relative knowledge, and the rotation you described doesn't sound sustainable.

BTW, compare this set to the Malefic gear for Locks. Their set IS better, IMO, and I'll tell you why- nothing to do with 5-6%.

No Spirit, better hit on whole. Tempest gives (all 8 pieces) 95 hit, 11 non meta slots, Malefic gives 143 hit, 11 non meta slots, and close enough for no effect on damage, haste, and a tad more crit to Tempest. I also concede that slot color isn't so important if you don't care about getting bonuses, but whatever, some do, just most uber mages go all +12. I am a deep fire mage and would rather have less crit and more hit, or best of all, F%^& spirit and more hit. I believe it gives the lock set more flexibility in socketing than the mage set, because if you were all T6 you would have to use more of that socketing towards hit as a mage (unless your arcane, but most t6 wearing mages are fire with IV or CC or arcane frost), whereas with Malefic gear you're damn near hit capped with just the pieces. The lock can just +12 damage slot all the way, maybe some +dam/+stam. Basically, given 164 hit cap for a fire mage, you're looking for 69 more hit from gems, ring, neck, weap, (off) and enchant, which space a lock can use for damage or haste or crit. Everyone says if you're in T6 your hit capped, but if were having a discussion about endgame absolute best setups, look at the stats & distribution. Malefic is more socket efficient due to no spirit and more hit, same socketability.

I recognize that spirit can help with damage, but lets say we kicked spirit from Tempest and upped the hit, no other trade-you get the same hit as Malefic, 184 spir for 48 hit. now you are (equipping all T6) at 143 hit, +15 spell Strike enchant, 1 + 5 hit/+6 sta gem<<- 1 hit capped >> , and the rest of the gems you can slot damage, for (10*12dmg)=120 damage. Still think that spirit is useful, fire/frost mages? Also, a more likely trade would be 84 spirit for ~48 hit, so you'd be keeping some spirit if this were still balanced in item budget. I just feel that Blizz has different ideas about mage itemization than it's players seem to.

For non raiders or those just starting say, Kara-
If you don't know why I keep harping on spell hit, and you wonder why anyone would want, say, Spellstrike hood over the welfare epic S1/S2 pvp helm because the stats appear so much more burly on the S1, here's why: Hit>Dam>haste(with enuf to make a diff)>Crit>penetration if you're not in the arena. This truism is not mentioned enough on this site or thottbot, IMO. But if you're going to do end game content, it's gospel. And in the good guilds, who are seriously analyzing who is doing what damage with what spells, interrupting properly, debuffing/decursing, etc, not having your rotation on lockdown with your spec and gear means someone else gets your spot. Whereas you might just pwn peeps in 5 mans, never be ousted from number one, when you get into engame its like college and the pros.

The math just backs it up, in raid bosses 3 lvls higher than you, if you don't have hit, your crit and damage don't mean $#!t. Check out Elitist Jerks website: if you doubt its all spelled out. Wow i sound like johnny cochrane there. Anyways,

u can find NPC selling T6 in Caverns of Time - Battle for Mt. Hyjal section. To purchase T6 set parts u need to have tokens from Black Temlpe.

Ok, ok, stop fighting for what spec is better, the answer is simple: It depends on what you are going to do most.

If you're going to PVP, there is no question, Frost is way better than Fire anyday (even with the Iceblock nerf) it just requires more skill to master it.

For raiding and long boss fights, Fire is the master, specially if u have a group of mages scorching, the DPS and the Efficiency is way better than frost for this (even with winter's chill on target)

For raid trash mobs and shorter boss fights, arcane is the king, yes, you're reading right, Arcane Missiles do more DPS than a deep fire build when talented, they don't require a debuff on the target to maximize its DPS, also, the 40% threat reduction on the arcane tree will render you unable to pull aggro, the downside is that you require more mana, thus u'll go OOM on long boss fights.

You just have to figure out what are u going to do most and pick the right talent for you.

I raid a lot, but I also pvp, I specced 40 Arcane / 21 Frost, I DPS with Arcane Missiles on Raids (I'm top 1-3 on DPS on 25 mans) while the frost spec gives me Iceblock / icelance / shatter for PVP; yeah I run OOM on long boss fights, but I try to compensate it with Mana regen / 5, mana pots, food, etc.

Btw im at +1037 Arcane damage self buffed.

With the new gems but no enchants the set would have

351 spell damage
143 spell crit (6.45%)
185 stam

Using Potent Pyrestone for yellow and
Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst for blue and +12 SD for meta

Which is about 40 more spell damage, crit and stam then that of T5 using the same gems, also +20 hit, int and spirit. But the +5% from set bonus is also huge, about the same as +100 spell damage I would guess.

I don't see why people think Arcane is a bad raiding spec. If you have pots, a shadow priest or three, and evo, you're set. AB only uses 200 more mana than fireball. I know it's 1/2 the cast time, but twice the damage too. And if you throw in some Arcane Missiles you're in good shape. If you have 2 pieces of the Tirisfal set you're in even better shape because of the bonus on it. If you have a good raid and a decent set of gear, not even full epic, although that would help, you'd poo on fire mages all day.

So now that evocation has been altered, that means Spirit is now absolutely useless for battle. No talents require spirit and now there are no moves that involve it. And any clever mage won't just stand there and slowly wait for his mana to regenerate. Also, they have infinite water, so they can't complain about recovering mana outside a battle.

Unless there's something I missed, Spirit seems bloody useless for a mage now.

the boots, gloves ,belt, and bracers from teir 6 comboed with the chest ,shoulders , leggings , and head peice from teir 5 give you 2 4 piece set bonuses in theory thats better then the whole teir six set id like to see someone actually accomplish this feet so they can tell me how it works out but im currently aiming to do this just azshara is amazingly undeveloped for endgame..............so this will take forever

I only have 2 parts of t6 by now, but I noticed it´s not worthy to have the t6 whole after the Sunwell. you can use just the belt, bracers, boots and shoulder of t6 (you get the set bonus) and another robe, gloves, pants and helm. I did some search and decided this will be my end-game robe, pants, helm and gloves:

Illidan has fire resistance... so use fire and your screwed.. ofcourse your using frost...
