Either shirnks or enlarges, removes or adds 250 AP. Sometimes it enlarges/shirnks the entire party too. After my experience, it mostly works in your benefit, shrinking the enemy, enlarges you etc.

This trinket is one of the most fun I've ever had. Many Gurubashi Berserkers and other large raid mobs have shrunk to this mighty little thing.

Yes, it can effect raid bosses. So far, Hakkar, Ossirian, Onyxia, and even Ragnaros are affected by it. I'm not so sure on others.

Possible effects from WoWWiki:

Make the user bigger (attack power +250)
Make the user smaller (attack power -250)
Make the target bigger (same effect as above)
Make the user's entire party bigger
Make the user's entire party smaller
Make every attacking enemy bigger
Make every attacking enemy smaller
Give shield-wielding enemies "Improved Blocking" for 30 seconds (this shows no visible effect other than target is hit by the ray)

I found this trinket to be very useful while leveling my paladin. It has a short enough cooldown (5 minutes) that I can use it pretty frequently, and the effect lasts 20 seconds.

The range (wowhead says it's 30 yards, but it's hard to tell, it feels more like 20) also makes it very useful for pulling melee mobs away from groups (since paladins have almost no ranged ability). Most of the time it backfires, it makes you bigger instead, helping you kill things faster!

A very fun trinket indeed, I recently managed to get my hands on one and test it a little. Here's what i found out.

- Tested on Doomlord Kazzak, worked properly. I suppose it works on other 25 mans bosses like gruul too. Note: I have yet to try this.

- You do NOT have to be a gnomish engineer to use one. Only to make it, if you are goblin engineer you can farm the mats and have a gnomish engineer make it for you.

- It does not seem to be unique. It should be possible to equipt two at once, yet again I have to try this before it is confirmed.

- It backfires most of the time. Most of my tries it made me or my party bigger. I can however backfire and make either you smaller or even enlarge the target. The Enlarge will be fun to see on gruul.

- I seems to work entirely well on TBC mobs. I can however not check if it has a lowered effect. Help requested.

On the fun note; Nothing beats seeing npc's like Kazzak, Fel Reavers and other big mobs shrunken to the size of two humans on top of each other.

I've used it approximately 30 times to date. I've gotten about a 40% success rate with it. Several times it has shrunk me to about the size of a boot. It once made me (dwarf) the size of a Tauren. I've also had it make a Elder Mistvale Gorilla about twice its size, quite impressive.

When it works, it's extremely effective in making the mob vulnerable.

Schematic is learned from the gnomish engineering trainer. The gnomish/gobblin engineering decision is made when you are lvl40+ and your engineering is 200+. Interestingly, however, when this item fails to shrink the target, it can do a variety of things, such as...
-Make you bigger (attack power +250)
-Make you smaller (attack power -250)
-Make them bigger (same effect as above)
-Make your entire party bigger
-Make your entire party smaller
-Make every attacking enemy bigger
-Make ever attacking enemy smaller

Works to your advantage for the most part (about 70% of the time), but don't use in high-pressure situations, unless you're going to die if you don't. Could tip the scales the wrong way.

I have fun with this trinket by hitting Booty Bay and shrinking horde as they come off the boat from Ratchet.

The bruisers will attack you for it, but as a rogue I just use vanish and they immediately stop. It's fun watching a level 60 tauren warrior running around on the dock like a hamster.

The Death Ray and the Shrink Ray are on separate timers.

In the wrong combo, you and possibly all you're friends are dead. In the right combo, pure pwnage.

We have used it a couple of times in MC for the fun of it. Core hounds become the size of a pudel, and magmadar looks like something you would cuddle when it lands.

However, when it doesnt.....

The priest who had this, was in a group with 4 rogues, which ended up with all of them losing 250 attack power - boy we're they pissed.

Basicly, i wouldn't really use this in raids unless you're sure that you can handle it ;)

It's true, sometimes the Shrink Ray shrinks the user and group (if user is in one), but I've never seen it do damage, nor to user or target. Guess someone kinda mixed with the Gnomish Death Ray which do a lot dmg to both and got a icon looking pretty much like Gnomish Shrink Ray.

i've been messing around with this for a few days and it's lots of fun. i don't fear backfiring cuz you're not small for very long and as far as i can tell it doesn't reduce your armor.

somtimes the backfire causes you and your party to grow instead. gotta love gnomish devices!

I'm sure many of you have used the Gnomish Shrink Ray on raid bosses before. It's usually more fun than the rest of the tedious crap you do with your toon during the fight. But it's not just for kicks! It may in fact be one of the most powerful items in the game.

Note: The action that the shrink ray performs is known to Fahrenheit as joggling. It'll be referred to by that name for the rest of this post.

I've compiled the latest numbers showing the extreme power of the joggler. These numbers are compiled from combat logs from the last 9 months or so.

"Gnomish Shrink Ray
Use: Shrinks the target reducing their attack power by 250. Thats what it usually does anyway....."

Duration is 20 seconds. I haven't found a mob in the game that can't be joggled and I've successfully done it to pretty much every raid boss I've seen. The following are melee damage reduction percentages for the duration of the joggling. Each percentage value is what I calculated for a single fight with that boss, I had multiple fights recorded for some bosses.

Average melee damage reduction is 25% for 20 seconds. The joggler has no effect on non-melee damage but had roughly the same impact on every single type of melee damage I saw. I didn't see any melee damage that wasn't affected.

It's particularly useful when the MT is about to take a lot of melee damage. Nefarian's warrior class call, Lethon's 25% transitions, various enrages, etc.

It could also nerf the living crap out of a low-level pvp melee twink for 20 seconds :thumbup:

It doesn't always work, the two backfires are shrinking your party (just the 5 in your party) for -250 attack power or making your party grow for +250 attack power. I've never seen it have an effect on the boss that is harmful to your raid.

btw you only have to be above level 30 to get the gnomish engineering quest but you need level 205 to make and use it

This item is really fun to use in battlegrounds. I tried it on a gnome and he basically dissapeared from sight cause he was so small. Try it out on a gnome and have a laugh.

Made two of these, 1 for me and 1 to sell.
Equiped the first one but everytime I tried to use it I got the message " You Must equip item first"

I checked and I was using the soulbound one. Strange.

I equipped the 2nd one and it works fine.

(Yes I double checked the toolbar icon to make sure I was linked to the correct one both times)

neway ... thought this was worth mentioning.

This device can have 5 different effect, 2 of them are nasty and 3 are useful.
As a caster you will not feel one of the 2 negative effects while on the other hand not profiting from 1 of the positive ones.

Effect 1
Actually shrinks the target, reducing AP by 250. Only useful against physical attacks so do not waste it on casters.

Effect 2
Shrinks yourself with the same effect. If you are caster, no problem. Nasty for melees and hunters.

Effect 3
Shrinks your whole party. Nasty if there are many melees/hunters.

Effect 4
You grow in size, gaining 250 AP. Great if you are melee or hunter but has no effect on casters really.

Effect 5
Your party grows in size. A very welcome buff if you have many melees/hunters.

BTW: Has anyone tried this while shrinked by Noggenfogger? Do the shrinking effects stack? That would actually make a gnome nearly invisible ;)

Just a tip, this can be used by a non-gnomish engineers (just get someone to make it for you) I have it on my level 20 pally.

O ya i used this in Ramparts and in Blood Furnace on the 62 elites and wat not...and it either shronk them reducing attack power by 250...or it Increased my whole partys size and raised our attack power!and if it does shrink me reducing my attack power its not a big deal seeing how theres other people hittin on him to....o ya im a mage so it dont matter either way!

I am a goblin engineer, and I have one. Lucky for me it's BoE, and no gnomish engineer requirement to use it. Had to beg my friend to make me one though. I also have the mind control cap, which is the only other fun gnomish item. Goblin is the better engineer. :D

I use this all the time. Good use for rogues when soloing, I have imp sap 3/3 and premeditation so I pick pocket - sap - change target - premed - PP - ambbush - fight - kill - change target - backstab - shrink ray - fight - kill. If I have good health going into the second fight I may save the shrink ray till I get a little lower.

Grow is nice too

According to thottbot, this item can do one of 8 things. It can shrink your opponent, like it's supposed to. It can make your opponent grow, increasing it's attack power. It can grow or shrink you. Or it can grow or shrink all nearby enemies or party members.

Anyway, does anyone know if any mobs are immune to this? Because it would be very useful to shrink, say, Onyxia and make her a bit more managable. Though, if it backfires and makes Onyxia grow instead, I'd imagine a 40-man alliance would become a 3-course buffet in a very short ammount of time...

I used it on Bear - it says "you cast shrink ray"
next it says "you are afflicted by Grow" and it made me bigger and start countdoun buff on my bar (like 20 sec)

I heard a rumor about a mob that has aoe will have its aoe reduced in proportion to its size. Can anyone confirm or debunk this?

This item is amazing when going up against any enemy that relies on melee attacks to do damage. Keep in mind that it has no effect on ranged or magical damage.

The recharge is short (5 minutes) and it can reduce an enemy's attack power by such a large margin that it'll keep you alive time and time again. This one is probably staying in my trinket slot until I hit 60, and long after that. Also tremendously useful for keeping tanks alive and/or dealing with adds during instances.

this is very great device, because of the lessen dmg, fast reuse, and a backfire that helps the group. i ussualy always have this on a trinket slot, inless 2 others are ready.

when this works, it takes off 250 attack power, how much less dmg depends on how high their attack power is, im caster that doesnt tank, so i cant be of much help to test that, but it is noticeable change. it backfires often, but only half of them hurt you. when it backfires, it will either shrink whole group and do the -250 to everyone for 10-20 secs, or grow everyone and add attack power(i didnt look at how much)to whole group for 10-20secs. as you probabaly guessed, best use is to shot it at tank mobs, it only affects melee attacks, using this on boss's is also a great help, since 2 of the 3 things it can do will always help. it has super fast reuse so you can almost always keep it equiped and firing it regularly, and like in other post, can use it to try and escape, if mob hits you for less. as warlock i get even more use out of this because it stacks with Curse of weakness, i have improved curse of weakness adding 20%more to that+this, taking off huge amount of dmg.

this device will ussualy be a nice welcome to a group because of less dmg on tank/less work for healer, and backfire grow that helps whole group, tanks love the grow that gives them extra hitting power. the shrink can make people mad because it can basically cuts their melee attacks in half, but since its short lasting, and isnt common, its worth the risk, most accept that

I used this on my big sandwich with everything on top and i have eaten it ... but after a few seconds i was like WOW ... argh this hurts as i was thinking it had togo to its original size.. never try this yourself it could've gone wrong i think when was typing this...

i dont think there r immune monsters for this, exept if the monster is imm for debuffs or attack lowering debuffs
But wut to do if onyxia grows instead of shriks :P then ur whole raid is in serios trouble and all pissed on u :P

It only does 1 of 3 things, not 8 or 5 like some posts are suggesting, let me put it out for you.

1, will work, meaning your target is shrunk, losing 250 attack power for the duration.

2, backfire, your group shrinks, all losing 250 attack power for the duration.

3, backfire, your group grows, all gaining 250 attack power for the duration.

it does not grow your target, it does not shrink or grow multiple targets, or affect multiple targets at all.

i'd also like to say that this only affects MELEE attack power. hunters or mobs using ranged, will not be affected by this at all, inless they melee. it also does not affect spells. the post about it affecting only your group is also true, so I don't know why people would get mad for you using this in a raid. shrinking 5 people for 20secs, is a great risk in a 40man raid.(and inless your grouped with the rogues, whos gunna care?) i could only wonder how much dmg gets cut out of onxyia or a MC melee boss like gole when they lose 250 attack power.

This trinkit rocks when your fighting elites or even pvp, one of the side effects was it shrunk my whole group instead of the mob lol we were unaffected besides the size difference.

There's a lot of confusion about this currently. There are basically four types of items that can be made by engineers:

BoE items that can be used by any engineer and traded.
BoP items that can be crafted by a specific specialization, but used by any engineer
Items that require a specific specialization to use.
BoP items that can be crafted by an engineer, but can be used even after engineering is dropped

Gnomish Engineering allows you to craft these items:

If your intent is to switch to Goblin after crafting all the goodies (by dropping and re-leveling Engineering), you should probably craft all of these items, but you must craft Gnomish Goggles, Gnomish Battle Chicken, Gnomish Death Ray, and Lil' Smoky (these are BoP) or you will lose access to these items permanently (unless you drop and re-level gnomish engineering again.

Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan and World Enlarger cannot be used by a non-gnomish engineer, so you can skip crafting these if you're planning on switching.

NOTE: Gnomish Death Ray doesn't require Engineering to use, so technically, you could level Engineering to craft this item, and drop it and still be able to use it.
