Actually, this can be used in pve for hunters. as a hunter myself i've used it to tame pets without getting hit for a minimal loss of hp. saves lives y'know :)

Rules WSG, though Druids/Paladins/Gnomes can escape it.
Fun backfire is when it pulls you to your opponent and nets you both :D Specially if it's a Warlock :D

Thie trinket works really well with the gnomish death ray, and i have used it many times with horde encounters. With the death ray you just trap em there and all they can do is watch as you charge up to do 1000 or so damage. Works great in pve too when your close to dying just use this back up and safely use a bandage, it has saved my life loads of times

Is it possible to make this with gnomish engineering, drop engineering completely, relevel, specialise for GOBLIN, and still be able to use this?

Also, is it a bug that druids can shapeshift out of movement imparing effects? Thats kinda overpowered, especially in wsg since they can have a 40% ish move speed bonus without a mount...

This is a great counter to a rogue's crippling poisons or a warrior's hamstring (any slow effects of a melee class really), the 20 seconds gives you plenty of time to crawl away. As a hunter, combine this with scatter shot, freezing traps, and finishing with concussion shot is a great distance maker.

I'd suggest just having a gnomish engineer craft it for you... but your way works too. Lol, it doesn't require gnome engi to use and its BOE.
Also, for those of you who PVP, it's useable in arenas but the duration is decreased to 10 seconds.

This is great for pvp, but don't forget its great PvE qualities to.
Using this on a running mob can save you a wipe!

This happens in BRD alot (at least for me lol)

Also good, say....if healer has agro from a hard hitting mob, plop a net on the guy and let your healer get out of melee range while tank comes back to get agro back

This thing does seem to backfire quite a bit. However, as a paladin I just throw up Blessing of Freedom. Even when it backfires (at least in my experiences) it nets your target in addition to netting you. So net, BoF, move. There you go!

As a healadin I created this item with the explicit idea of netting rogue mobs in instances that my tank hasn't taken care of. Real life saver! Net and 20 seconds to do whatever. Absolutely awesome.

It's Gnomish engineering. So you'll have to become a member of the Gnomish Egineering society... real name escapes me. Anyway, then you can get it from the Tinkers quarter in Ironforge.

I've used this thing about 30 times now, easily one of the best engineer devices. I've had about a 50% success rate on it. The other times it either netted me or both me and my opponent. But that doesn't matter because in the situations you end up using it in you have nothing to lose anyways. It's a good defence weapon of last resort. For anyone on the pvp server, you'll find yourself using it mainly when a person 10 levels higher than you is hunting you down like a dog. By the way it doesn't always capture a player or mob in a net for 10 seconds, sometimes it goes for up to 30 seconds.

I'm a healing priest (for MC) so DPS is not exactly my thing, and I'd say this is my favorite tool because even if it nets me I'm still probably no worse off because the rogue/warrior was already in melee range.

It has saved me a bunch of times against rogues especially, you should see those poor guys who usually bounce all over the place when they have nothing to to but just stand their and look at you. So sad :)

I know it has a 10 minute cooldown, but if I have the gnomish deathray equiped as well, will the net thingie activate the full cooldown on the deathray as well?

Any Hunters that have this have tried it out in Battlegrounds? Im thinkin of gettin a Gnomish Engineer to make this for me since im Goblin. 10min cooldown is kinda.. annoying tho.

Doesn't this count as an Immobilizing effect, like the Spiders' net attack?
And the Alliance Insignia (Sp?) does remove these kind of effects? (Immobilizing)

On my lvl 35 pally I told a lvl 60 warrior I could be beat him in a duel. He didn't believe me and refused to duel me. Then I bet him 20g I could beat him, he was quick to jump on it. As soon as the 3, 2, 1 countdown started I ran out of the dueling area, he followed. When we are both out of the area I throw a net on him and run back into the dueling area. He refused to pay me the 20g.

On my lvl 60 warlock I was waiting outside Molten Core and some1 challenged me to a duel. I accept. Right away the guy jumps into the lava, uses a fire protection pot and begins swimming at a rock in the middle of the lava. I throw a net on him and he is stuck in the lava with his fire protection pot ticking away. Never seen anyone so mad.(maybe it was his epic repair bill)
Moral of the story, noob tactics should only be countered with another noob tactic.

With 2 points in the new talent "Second Wind" you cannot lose when you use this trinket in pvp. Think of fighting a mage... first you charge up to him, hamstring and stuff... he blinks, you intercept... then you net the bastard, what's he gonna do? And even if the chances are you will be netted, hell, if I can get 10% HoT and 20 rage for free, I'll take it.

I decided to make a 29 twink mage with gnomish death ray, after achievin the required 240 engineering and a good half way through twinking (mmm 500 frost bolt crits) i came to my horrid realisation that u must be lvl 30 to be a specialist engineer!

You must be lvl 30+ to be a specialist engineer, ie gobling or gnome, till then u cant pick

i missed out on my death ray =(

How much would this help at 70 arena in 2v2? It wouldnt work against rogues, mages, druid, gnome, or anyone with an insignia of... trinket. seems like it'd be good for 20-29 twinks, and 30-39 twinks with the death ray and all.

very simlar to really sticky glue. do try not to use your very sticky glue, you can never get it again and it works 100% of the time

This thing is horrible 4 all ranged classes. It almost always backfires and pulls u closer 2 ur enemy. its really not that effective and should only be used as a last resort.

Ok this is realy wierd. i was out in STV and the arena chest was beeing released at the time, and i went there just for fun.
then i decided to use the net-o-matic thingy on someone and it was a horde that jumped down into the arena. but before he landed on the ground i reached to use the Net-o-matic on him, and he standed there in the air and did nothing and then after those 10 seconds he just disapeared, i whispered him and asked what happend and he said everything went blue i ran like hell and i got to a place where there was no mobs, no horde or allies just him, and it was some houses there and he said it looked like an island or something. ok then i invited him to group with me and i looked after him on the map. And he was in the middle of it all just alittlebit over the whirlwind in the middle of it all.. i asked him to take screenshots but he did never answer, and that was since he got disconnected by any reason. then he went online again ca 3 minutes later and he was in the arena again:S realy realy wicked, but he didnt manage to take some screenshots tho!:S i realy wanted to see that place. well however i think you shall try it out, but i havent managed to do this again, i have tried about 5 times or more now and it wont work:S
however, i got in mind that it might was GM's Island?:S im not sure but still? can it be? hmmff.. however GL to anyone trying this, and please tell it here if you manage to do this.

I have yet to get this, and I'm just wondering how often it backfires. As stated above IronFalcon had his backfire 20% of the time(I would like maybe one or two more to tell me because luck can be good or bad and you never know.) Most things seem to do it around 10% of the time or so. This is one of the main reasons I dropped 300 alch for engineering.(I probably should have done more research on it first, but I still love engineering)

Can we say PvP killer!

This item is a PvP must! In just two days of having it, I have used it to stop toons that are 15+ levels above me from killing me. I use this on them and run away, works like a charm. This item is by no means defense only though, it's great for offense in PvP as well! I've already stoped 2 people from getting away with this item, and the range on it is great, you don't have to be right next to them to use it!

The cooldown on this item is 10 minutes! Sooooo good!

I have had it backfire now and can say that it is a 10 second root and sometimes just roots me or roots me and my target when it backfires. The backfire only happens prolly 20% of the time though so it's no big deal to me, I can just vanish or use escape artist skill from gnome race to get out of its root.

This item is a huge bonus to any person doing PvP!

I'm a level 34 Gnome Rogue doing Gnomish Engineering, skill at 240.

... for those guilds still struggling to kill ragnaros. These and large rope nets from defias or whatever in westfall are very useful in netting the sons of flame until the mc can bring up the assist list. Just wondering though, does anyone know what happens if it gets "caught up in the caster's clothing?" I assume it means you net yourself, but not quite sure.

i banked this one and stopped using it. it does more harm then help to me. almost everytime i use it, it either roots just me, or me+my target THEN targets wears off before mine!,getting me killed. some people dont have it backfire so much, but it litterally backfires almost every shot for me, rooting me or me+target, or it brings me to my target then roots me+target. if you want to consider this item, be aware of the risks, backfiring this device will almost always get you killed if you really needed it to work, and it rarely worked for me. i think this is more of a mage/priest/gnome/rogue/hunter trinket, because those have another way to survive if it backfires. blink/fade/escape/vanish/FD, as a warlock i get nothing but long cast and ussualy resisted fear(or it just brings back friends in alot of areas).

being a hunter you try to do everything from afar, yet when these backfires you arent rooted in place, it dashes you to infront of the mob and then roots you. kinda fun, and had my whole SM group wondering how I managed to pull a "dash" off.

This could be very effective in the hands of a druid! No matter what, you only root your enemy. If it roots you, you can just shapeshift out of it!

There's a lot of confusion about this currently. There are basically four types of items that can be made by engineers:

BoE items that can be used by any engineer and traded.
BoP items that can be crafted by a specific specialization, but used by any engineer
Items that require a specific specialization to use.
BoP items that can be crafted by an engineer, but can be used even after engineering is dropped

If your intent is to switch to Goblin after crafting all the goodies (by dropping and re-leveling Engineering), you should probably craft all of these items, but you must craft Gnomish Goggles, Gnomish Battle Chicken, Gnomish Death Ray, and Lil' Smoky (these are BoP) or you will lose access to these items permanently (unless you drop and re-level gnomish engineering again.

Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan and World Enlarger cannot be used by a non-gnomish engineer, so you can skip crafting these if you're planning on switching.

NOTE: Gnomish Death Ray doesn't require Engineering to use, so technically, you could level Engineering to craft this item, and drop it and still be able to use it.

To fellow Classic players: This trinket is both one of my favourite trinkets and also the most infuriating thing in the world.
Pros:

10 minute CD is not as bad as it sounds.
Great fun in PvP against players who think they can kite your class.
An absolute lifesaver against mobs when you need to run or even when you need to CC one of them in a group.

Cons:

IT KILLS YOU MUCH MORE OFTEN THAN IT HELPS YOU

Anecdotally it has given me surely something like a 33% success rate of actually working properly. If it fails in PvP then best case scenario is you look a bit foolish and your target gets away, worst case you die. Against mobs, in a situation where you've felt you needed to deploy the net, either of the failure modes is a death sentence if you don't have some sort of recourse ready. I recommend having a plan B in hand for if the net gets you stuck, like the gnome racial or the combat rogue sprint talent.
I swear to god this is the most frustrating and infuriating item I've had the displeasure of wanting to use.
