A better shield (and more predictably obtained) comes from getting exalted rep status with the Frostwolf Clan: The Immovable Object (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=19321). I will warn you, on looks it pales in comparison to the Skullflame. But with slightly better stats and a straight forward path to obtain it, I found I can I live with the Immovable Object's turtle shell appearance.

I found, through watching a friend of mine, that the damage proc goes off quite a bit, would is good! However, it has a large radius and at the time, constantly broke sheep. We were in UBRS at the time and it was very annoying to have the sheeped Orc Warlocks break and start causing problems. We eventually had him slap on a green shield to tank due to the issues the proc was causing with the bursts of fire.

Looks wise, this shield is freakin amazing. I love it, and had the chance to get one for free but decided that I didnt want it. I prefer my tools of doom to be functional as well as awesome looking.

Have seen 2 of em drop in UBRS now, great PVP shields in my opinion, not so hot in crowd control situations. We have a pally that uses it full time, and it really messes with sheep / seduce / sap in most instances.

Cool factor is there yes, but there are much better shields to be had out there...Drillborer's Disk comes to mind...as far as something not too hard to obtain if your guild is running MC

You have you realize the staying-power of this shield because the proc for lifestealing, gives 200% bonus from +dmg gear.

If you have over 800+dmg/heal gear it will DO 875dmg, and HEAL for 875dmg...

This is GREAT if you have a prot paladin in a lot of +dmg gear and your trying to help someone powerlevel. Run through armory and gather everything up, let the thing sit there and proc while you lifesteal constantly.

Edit: Unfortunately this is NOT true anymore. They have fixed the proc so it does a fixed amount and even though it says 3% and 1% on the shield I've noticed significant diminishing returns on the amount of procs.

Yes it is modified by spelldamage. When farming Large Brilliant Shards in BRD, I'll pull the entire emperor's room in one pull. With ~950 spelldamage it will proc for over 1000 life stolen and the flamestrike will proc for several hundred damage.

Can literally just stand there consecrating and the shield keeps me alive. Of course they have to hit in order for the proc to work. So if you're blocking or dodging or parrying, it will not proc. Therefore it's really best for a holy shockadin.

edit: or an enhancement shaman I suppose too would get a good effect from it.

was solo farming bijous in ZG when this dropped from a crocolisk. This is interesting for a 59 twink post-BC, especially if the +dmg affects the procs, with all the itemisation changes its quite easy to get +300-400 dmg at that level. Seems very nice against a rogue ^^

You posted that well and truly into BC, 2008 in fact. So why would anyone at all bother with anything you just mentioned? You don't have to get exalted, the cost is 4760 honor and 25 AV marks. Not exalted status and gold. Simple! :D

got mine for 299g on Executus server from a hunter.
The shield procs quite often with the heal and still quite a bit with the fire proc. The heal proc takes from +healing but the fire damage proc does not I know for a fact after having this thing for 10 lvls and hitting OL and getting some dmg and healing gear i get healed for around 300's but fire proc stays in its range but, it can CRIT. And on lower lvl mobs it crits for 200's sometimes to an entire group which is pretty cool to see all those numbers jump when your aoe grinding as a paladin. hope this might have helped someone lol.

Another great thing about this awesome shield I have is that when you're riding a griffin or w/e other stuff there is to ride from FP to FP, they breathe fire every once in a while. I don't know if it's a glitch or what but its cool lol.

I bought this, and the flamestrike part is not effected by spell damage, but the lifesteal proc is. I have 500 spell damage in my aoe tank gear, and 1172 +heal, and the lifesteal did 500 damage on average.

Important to note, not sure why, but against overly low-level mobs (Gnomer instance), the lifesteal proc didnt come off much.

I just tested in ZF, and it was excellent, doing 585 to 700 heal/dmg on me in with 1220 +heal gear on.

I just got one of these from the AH as an resto shaman, and went to try it in SM while boosting a friend of mine, and I have to say I was really suprised of the result. I just kept earth shield up while pulling and when I got the about half of SM cath hitting on me, I popped out Stoneskin totem, Grace of Air (For more damage migration) and Fire Nova Totem/Magma totem. Cleared the whole SM cath in about 10 minutes.

My gear was honored gear/2x merciless and random blues from instances.

I'm getting a shield spike for this one, as I'm going to boost my friend alot more :)

I see these being sold for upwards of 500 g all the time on my server, but I dont see why its so special.
I must admit that the shield looks amazing, but as a warrior-tank , Im just as happy using my draconian deflector (and saving myself 500g)

Draconian deflector vs Skullflame

D:2153 Armor, S:2256 Armor
D:40 Block, S:40 Block
D:+7 Stamina, S:+10 Shadow Resistance
D:+10 Fire Resistance, S:+10 Fire Resistance
D:Durability 100 / 100, S:Durability 120 / 120
D:Requires Level 58 S:Requires Level 54

D:Equip: Increased Defense +10.
S:Equip: When struck in combat has a 3% chance of stealing 35 life from target enemy.
S:Equip: When struck in combat has a 1% chance of dealing 75 to 125 Fire damage to all targets around you.

Lets try to look at this objectivily (flaming skull omg wtf :D). As far as stats go (excluding the "equip"). We see that basically, the difference between the two is that skullflame has 100 more armor, on the other hand draconian has 7 more stamina. While the fire reststance is always a plus for people doing MC , the shadow resistance is more situational and not as usefull for most (BWL). I'd say with the tradeoff between armor and stamina , the difference is almost negligible.

Now for the equip. The draconian deflector has +10 defense. Any tank knows that + defense is his friend. After the defense nerf, I basically need this shield to get near 400 defense. We all know of its use so no reason to elaborate (increase dodge, parry , enemy missrate , decrease enemy critrate)

The Equip on the skullflame shield somehow doesnt seem as attractive. The 1st one steals 35 life of enemy at 3% of all hits. Tell me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that 105 life every 100 hits isnt that big of a deal. The 2nd equip has a 1% chance of dealing fire damage. The problem with this seems to be that u can unsheep , unshackle and unsap enemies by accident when it procs. Also, it is not really the warrior's role to be concerned with damage. A warrior is best off focusing in his survivability. Extra defense is more needed for him than extra dps. Therefore I'd prefer the draconian deflector's equip extra.

Long story short, for most people (not all ), I'd say the draconian deflector is preferable. And considering the fact that one is free and the other 500g. It seems like a no brainer. Drac deflector ftw

At first glance, this shield's stats and bonuses don't look all that great. But on thing not everyone realizes: this shield takes 100% from +damage! So with +60 in damage gear, you would be stealing about 100 life 3% of the time! And the aoe would be dealing average of 160 to all those around you. With the right gear, this shield can be insane.

I've wanted this shield since lvl 23 when I saw a 60 warrior with it while questing in lakeshire. Finally someone on my server was selling it, I just lvl'd up to 60 after turning in 2 BRD quests when my friend whispers me about the shield. I made an opening bid of 500g and was shut down, but finally got them to let it go for 780g, im broke now but w00t w00t I got my skullflame!

Im gunna hide it when I do ubrs so I can get drac/ deflector too 0_-

Make no mistake, for a warrior, the draconic deflector is much better. But for a spell damage paladin? This thing starts to get sick.

+Spell damage adds to the life drain proc at a 1-to-1 ratio. With my 5/8 judgement and some other +spell damage items, the drain life is at about 255. With a 3% chance, that isn't too bad, especially when you have 3 or 4 mobs beating on you. When I finish my full set, I should be at about 400ish spell damage, which will make the life drain proc huge, about 435 or so per proc.

FACT: You get nearly +100% Spell Coeffecient for the Heal proc.
FACT: In about 10 levels of almost all AOE herding usage, I never SAW the AoE damage proc go off. It may have and I may have missed it, which is easy to do with 20+ mobs beating on you at once, but I cannot say that I even know what that animation looks like.

OPINION: IMO This is one of the absolute best items to have for a AOE Herder build as soon as you can start wearing it at 54 and Def when combo'd with a Demon Forged Breastplate, which is craftable and easy to get.

Combine 1) a Herder build (Imp Holy Shield/Blessing of Sanctuary/Imp Ret Aura/etc.)
with: 2) Demon forged Breastplate (easy to get since its craftable)
3) Skullflame Shield with the best Shield Spike you can get
4) And Lots of +dam/heal gear (+DEF gear is not needed at this level and the Skullflame Shield gets full benefit of +heal gear)
5) Toss in trinkets or other armor items that add to passive damage or heal proc and it gets even sicker.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
And you have the best recipe for AOE Herding TONS of mobs at once. a 1 or 3% free heal proc may not seam like a lot until you start AOE Herd Tanking 8-10 mobs at once. Then the shield and chest heals procs all the time and you CAN have multiple drain HOTs up at once. With a partner healing u can hold aggro and destroy 20-25 mobs at once. You don't even need to swing, passive damage will kill them all, but its safer to be holy shielding, but u can lose connect/ come back and have a pile of dead mobs around and feel safe every time u drop connection during a fight.

I used to farm entire undead fields in WPL with a healer partner. My records for solo herding in WPL at mobs +1/-1 level of me were 12 in 1 pull solo and 28 in a 2man with a healer. Yeah you level REALLY fast both ways.

And the skullflame shield is the best for this all the way until the Lichen Guard from Sporegarr Rep, which at level 70 and a raid tank, i am Still using that shield a lot. It's one of my 3 shields I always carry.

Eitrigg AH currently has this shild up for 600g Buyout. I've already sold others for that price (with +18 sta chant), this shield will help you FLY up levels and help you understand why RET PALLY is a SLOW LVLing Pally once you can HERDER Build

So far the coolest ingame looking piece of shield ive seen.
Got two of them now.
First one i got around 2,5 years ago on my warrior.
I ran UBRS countless times for the Draconian but it never dropped. At that time i tanked in Molten Core and needed the shield for the FR resistance. For me it droped from a trash mob inside ZG right before Bloodlord. My guild knew that i realy needed a new shield and gave it to me. Such great guild mates is hard to find. Still got this shield on my warrior witch never will be higher than level 60. This character will for me allways be a good memory in armory from Old School wow.

The second shield i bought on AH for 700gold at level 48 with my paladin. Last night i turned 54 and could finaly equip it.
So far i havent seen anyone on my server with this shield. That kinda make it rare and special and i like that. :)
On my first server there was many having it.

Edit: Im level 62 now and still using this shield. Like the poster under me says its realy great for a protection paladin build.

As many say this shield is cool. Yeah it is ofc!
But when it comes to tanking i would rather gief this to a Paladin or a Shaman.
When you tank with this you cancel Sheep and other Stuff.
I hate Paladins taking my stuff, But this would i love to give a paladin.
(Or sell it on AH xD )

60 warrior/norgannon i used this in zg as one of the tanks for panther boss, i was getting attacked buy about 50 or so of the panther's, the shield proc'd once, just once the whole time, i dont think its 1%, its hardley proc'd the entire time ive used it.
1.its one of the cooler looking shields in the game
2.it has decent armor but no stats =(
3.block sucks for an epic
4.get the immovable object, if ur tanking high bosses who gives a crap what it looks like, the immovable object is easy as of the pvp honor points now.

The 3% Proc is nice, I have a Truesilver Breastplate and the proc does go off a little more often than 3% it feels, but add that with this NICE shield and the life steal..um yummy! As for the 1% AoE fire proc, I have dealt with the Enchant Fire quest in the Badlands and the AoE fire is great solo but in an instance may not be that good.

However the fire proc from Badlands is 15% and I was able to control it fine in ZF with the proper pulling, I have since upgraded weapons but the Proc should not be a problem if u do it properly.

Hell man, its 1% may not go off all day! This is a great shield, not sure about 300g good though. Aegis of Stormwind usually goes for 25-35g on Burning Legion and its pretty good too for the +15 Stamina if your looking for a decent alternative. My 2c

Bought this shield a couple days ago on the AH for 200g (EU Silvermoon Horde). A lot of money yes but in the grand scheme of things not really, especially compared to some of the other prices I've seen it go for (650g+).

Have had no problems with the shield breaking saps or sheeps, but then again as a good tank I'd always make it a point of pulling the mobs away from those that are sapped/sheeped anyway.
It is a fantastic shield and just has to be the best looking shield in the game. I've found that it doesn't proc with either ability very often though and when it does, neither special ability is any way great.

Still, can't beat it's looks :)

dropped from a twilight avenger, and funny thing is it drops 1 time out of 1,127,912... i was in a group of 4, people and master loot was on, so the master looter was just going around Shift+clicking things, and no one even noticed it dropped, until about 5 minutes later he saw it in his bags, so we decided that the top 2 rollers would split the gold that it sold for, its in the AH for 700g, so thats 350g for me since i rolled an 89. thats enough for my epic mount and some =D

Crap shield.

The aoe proc makes this useless. The lack of +sta or +def doesn't help either. I've had mine for quite some time now and I'm sick of the frickin thing breaking cc, yet I never win rolls on draconian defender which is much better.

Firstly, i would like to moan a little about the fact that with any epic that drops, everyone rolls. It has happened to me a number of times on my warrior, and i think it sucks. If a warrior is in the group, why not treat it as normal loot and use need rolls first? Happened to me when Foror's Compendium of Dragonslaying dropped and i missed out. Its just really harsh on people that actually need it in my opinion.

Its the best looking shield imo... as for its usefulness... ya its not that great... no stats but there is +10 fire resist... I got one on Alliance Anetheron... had to have it because it was the first shield that caught my eye a year ago when i first started playing... and never had the chance to get it before... paid 250g for it... then i found a glowin brightwood staff and sold that thing... so im feeling prettyyy good :D got Draconian now... so ill prolly end up using DD

the health proc DOES get FULL Bonus from any +healing ( +spell dmg/healing) gear that you have on. i noticed when i got a +240 health back from "steal life"

You wonder why Blizz made every single epic shield so ugly dont you? I mean this shield is about as big as the palm of your characters hand, and almost looks exaclty like wall of the dead and Blackskull Shield. I recently just sold Blackskull shield because it looks so ugly! I wish the shields were larger and made a better emphasise(is that how you spell it) on why it cost 1000000G. I mean c'mon blizzard, at least make it a tower and not some little circle with a skull on it!

Noone wanna buy it also at low prices (like 200g) because all tanks are saying this is the most useless shield in the game.
No stats (like +sta, why a shield doesn't have any +stamina ?) , stupid AoE that will unsap and unsheep everything in raid instance , and a not so great armor value.
Sacred protector is 100 times better.

This dropped off of a trash mob in E. Plaguelands last night and I was the only shield-user in the group. It looks great and was an improvement from my green shield.

Question: Is this better for tanking than the Draconian Deflector?

This has also been said to come from Gangled Golems in Eastern Plaguelands, i know that this is a random world drop from 54-60 but i am just curious if anyone has found this recently? and if so , off what?

This dropped for me in Lower Blackrocks Spire last week. Its arguably the best shield in the game right now.

I cant say ive noticed the life steal but im sure its working given that its 3%. I would say the fire AoE procs more than 1%, it usually goes off three of four times with a few mobs hitting you which gives a nice agro bonus.

You have to stay away from poly/shackled/sap mobs otherwise the AoE will break them. For a warrior, moving mobs around shouldnt be a problem.

This shield is definately worth is weight in gold.

This one dropped on a Rend run on sunday, and one of our warriors called need. Cue some mage who says we should all roll for it, since it could be sold for a couple of hundred gold. 5 minutes of arguing back & forth, we all end up rolling & the guy that won the roll sold the shield to the needer for 1s.

This dropped yesterday for me by a 59 Frostsaber in Winterspring. It's not that much better than a Sacred Protector, certainly not enough to be used instead of sold for 600 gp but to the hell with money.

I just love to tank with this shield and to walk around with my back on fire :)

The graphic in the test server has been made totally awesome. The shield has a shape similar to the Sacred Protector with a big skull on the front of it. Flames - yes flames - shoot out from the open mouth and eyes. Buy this shield if you can afford it and strut around when all the other servers are patched.

We didn't sell it at AH, but gave it to a guildmate who was in need of some new tankinggear, since it's BoE.

What I can tell you is that he was truly happy after rewarding him with this ^^

Over the last month, I've collected roughly 55 Combat badges and killed over 5000 bugs. This shield drops off one of the Zora Bugs and I won the roll. Woot! 600g from selling it in the AH. This thing is expensive on my server (others were priced at 750g). Also had the Libram of Fervor drop from a Zora bug (didnt win that one).

So i read about this shield the other day and today it dropped in stratholme for me.you should have seen my face.needed and no other warriors or shamans in the party so i got it.REALLY pleased with it.The procs , when there are like 10 mobs hitting you couldn't be better

Guys. If the Thunderfury has a proc that deals damage to nearby enemies, and it's the ultimate tanking weapon in the game, then what makes you think the proc on this is horrible for a tank? :(

When there is a sheep, or a sap, or shackled undead, or w/e, the aggro is pulled AWAY from that.

I don't feel the aoe being that big a problem, just be careful where you stand, haven't had any problems with it ;)

I have to agree with the rest here. Way overprized shield. On my server it goes for 500-800 G on AH. As an MT i wouldn't be caught dead wearing this. In any instance, the crowd controllers (rogues, mages, priests) will hate you each time it's AoE procs and breakes every sap/sheep/shackle around you. It's good for styling in the mayor cities, and perhaps for shield carriers in large raids where the AoE proc won't mess up everything. Better to go with reliable stuff like the DD.

only paid 200g for mine. I'll agree not too great for a warrior, but on my shaman it is very nice. Especially with a +7 stam enchant.

got one off the dragonkins in UBRS hatching room,i rolled a 92 and a 99 !LOL, so COOL looking it is, tho the flame always come out from the left side of his mouth,hmm why?
btw , i tested it for a while,the flamestrike proced 3 times while the lifestealing doesnt proc at all!

This dropped in my group this afternoon. He passed on it, then we all rolled to see who woud get it. And didn't get really high, and a warrior recieved it (and he equipped it). I'm not too concerned about losing it, I'm happy that this is my 3rd epic drop ever! Congratz, Val! :D

I advise the same of all other readers. This is the best sheild in the game and mr.knowitall over here didnt stop to think maybe, yes it might be bad for polys and saps, but possibly.. Anything else! Best sheild in game. use with caution when in groups though. FanTASTIC in AOE places.

I was Prot spec between 35 and 69. At 70 I respec'd Holy (mostly to go PvP with Guildies). I bought this shield and used it from 54-69. I was unaware just how AMAZING this thing is when combined with spell damage. I currently have around +600 spell damage and +1400 healing.
I recent was running some friends thru SM cath and this thing was proc'ing over 600! That's right. Free 600 life returned! It proc'd 3 times in a row (yeap..1800 health on one pull). I was able to solo the inside of the cathedral without using a bubble. When i popped Avenging Wrath, this shield popped returned 893 life!

REALITY CHECK: while this is a god-sent when it works, sometimes the proc's are few and far between. It is unrealiable and i still have to heal/bubble at times. Also, I am taking a LOT of hits to see it proc, i.e. I'm running SM cath in 3 pulls. While it is amazing for powerleveling, I would never walk into a pvp match with it on.

Just did quests in Burning Steppes, when dropped for me....
Back at Orgrimmar i changed it with a priest. And for this he gave me ...
With level 54 for me ! :D very lucky

the thing that i really want to know about this shield is: 'are the procs affected by +spell damage gear?'

i would assume that the life stealing proc is because the other item that are life stealing still are, specifically the hakkari manslayer, because it is considered an offensive proc and not a healing proc like they nerfed in one of the last patches. but they also nerfed some of the AoE procs like the force reactive disk to no longer be effected by the +spell damage gear.

if a paladin or shaman who has this could check both procs for me, i would really appreciate it.
