This is one of the best blacksmithing items to make while lvling your skill from (275)280-300. Low cost, but less useful after the launch of The Burning Crusade.

This item is excellent for protection paladin AoE tanking.

Here is the run down of damage, and location from each type of Shield spike:

(8-12 damage), BoE world drop from Level 25-35 mobs, found easily on the AH.
(16-20 damage), BoE Rare world drop from level 35-45 mobs, found sometimes on AH
(20-30 damage), BoE rare world drop from level 58-60 mobs, also dropped by Master Elemental Shaper Krixix, and Emeriss, very rarely found on AH. Good luck getting this one.
(26-38 damage), bought from vendor after exalted status for Thrallmar/Honor Hold. Mats are expensive, and the rep grind is hard, so this items sells for a high price in AH, but is rarely found due to honor requirements needed to make it.

2.4.2 PTR patch notes:

Items that enchant other items no longer have tradeskill requirements
(Mithril Spurs, Shield Spikes, Weapon Chains, etc.).

As of the new patch, this item and others like it no longer require a blacksmith level to attach. Anyone at any level can attach and use the shield spike.

Also, for Paladin and Warrior twinks this is a nice upgrade until you can afford Felsteel Shield spike.

"Requires Blacksmithing (XX)"

XX is the lvl that the blacksmith NEEDS to attach it. Can attach on ANY shield on the trade window on the WILL NOT BE TRADED slot, just like enchants.

This will take up the slot for a permanent enchant/buff on the shield.

You can still use a rune of shielding on your shield, even with a spike, since that is a temporary buff.

Weapons and shields should always have a slot for a perm affect and a second slot for a temp buff -- they are mutually exclusive.

If you apply a shield enchant after you have put the spike on, the enchant will overwrite your spike. If you already have an enchant on your shield and then you go to have the spike added, the spike will overwrite the enchant.

This is a nice spike, even if it doesn't do as much damage as the felsteel spike. The felsteel spike has an insane rep grind and high mat requirements compared to the thorium spike. Furthermore, if you can get this recipe when leveling blacksmithing, you will save a huge amount of thorium bars when making the 275-300 jump. Whisper Chancelot on Rexxar if you want me to craft you one (alliance).

Shield spikes are good for pally to aoe grind. With consecration, you can pull and hold multiple mobs with the right spec, redoubt , consecrate, retribution aura and reckoning and other defensive talents. They kill themselves by hitting.

Wowwiki has good articles on aoe grinding. You will need good shield and other good gear
