The droprate for these is beyond horrible; out of maybe 200 mobs I killed, only 6 dropped, and here it says the average droprate is 23-25%.

Horrible droprate, best idea is to go to burning steppes, near dracodar and farm those dragon types there, took about 2 hours to get three

I'm pretty sure patch 2.3 made it much harder to get the Black Dragonscales from the dragonkin in Burning Steppes.
After doing the quest Dragonkin Menace https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=4182 i only got 1 scale, it use to be at least 10.
Probably due to the fact that they are now non-elite. Even the larger dragons are all non-elite in Burning Steppes. Very easy kill now, but very hard to get the scales. I consider myself lucky though since i already skinned about 5 stacks of the scales pre-2.3.
Maybe it's to motivate ppl to do Blackwing Lair more often, or should be taken as a hint 'don't bother with it'. :{

I have consistently been able to sell a single scale for 15g on my server (Scarlet Crusade-Horde). Horrible drop rate, but after a half hour or so of grinding the dragons, I walk away with between 2 and 5 scales.

So I decided to attempt to farm these, after two hours of farming i walked away with 5 scales, 6 stacks of rugged leather, 3 stacks of thick leather, and a big headache. There was a 3% drop rate on everything on the east side of burning steppes. I tried to farm the higher ups but I'm a bit too low to do it comfortably. I would say get a guild to help you out, just clear it over and over and hopefully you'll get a stack or two.

i would highly recommend the northeast part of burning steppes, north of the ogre mound thingy, because two drakes patrol that area and they are by far the best means to get the scales, with a 24%ish droprate, and the dragonkin there drop it for around 12%. if the drakes dont respawn quick, there are also a couple south of blackrock. bear in mind none of these are elite, i believe they were so before patch 2.3. good luck!

As a feral druid I solod LBRS to make my UBRS key and I've so far found three groups in a week who want to run that dungeon. People still run UBRS for Onyxia and Blackwing Lair attunement for fun and to complete Quel'Serrar quests. Also with the buff to Spirit regen in 2.4, savvy people want the Ace of Beasts.

Back to the point, I usually get 25-30 Black Dragonscales per run of UBRS when I'm the only skinner, and a run takes less than an hour.

Just did it tonight for a Guildee...solid 96 kills to get the 3 scales, can't complain though considering how much Rugged Leather is going for on my server right now!

Fistly do the dragonkind menace in Burningsteppes, do it with all your guildmates, and skin. I'n lvl 54 i managed to get 60 scales a day.

Also when people are fighting onyxias guards inside Stormwind castle, be there and fight.. I got a tons of scales with helping people killing them.

Hav both Black Dragonscale Breastplate, leggings and shoulders now, giving me a nice damage and fireresistance

black dragonscales are NOT ONLY for making dragonscale armor, they are also used in quests, such as the warlock epic mount -_-

The flamescales near the alter of storms. A warlock can pick them off with Curse of Doom, and back away about 50 feet, then keep fearing and keep corruption on. Im farming 1 every 1.5 minutes

At lvl 60 as a hunter these things are easy as hell to kill. Go to the SE of Burning Steppes and there are tons of them in a circular formation that sometimes has a chest in the middle. The Wyrmkin are easy as hell since they're casters and the Dragonspawn are just a little bit more difficult because of armor/HP.

The fire resistance on the Black Dragonscale mail set it not that good - except for on the boots. But the attack power is superior and the stamina decent - unlike if you aquired normal green "of fire resistance" mail. Yet then you'd have some good fire resistance.

My only complaint is that it lacks some mana, but combined with the other stuff you can find in Blackrock Depths & Spire...

Farming hasn't been that much of an issue with a little help from the friends, and also if you're lucky you can get a stack on AH for 10-15g. (the boots are something else of course, purple)

If you have a pimped out char think tier 2 or HWL stuff go for the higher level dragonkins.
I can kill the dragon mages 4/5 in a row with out downtime. The melee dragonkin are harder but can be done.

And the bots don't go there and the skinrate is great 1 in 3 or something. Easy money

I had no problem farming these for my warlock epic mount quest. I skinned 3 off of 5 of the dragons right outside the entrance to altar of storms (in burning steppes).

Ok, I am a 64 Warlock trying to finish this epic quest. Correct me if I am wrong. According to this I have to have a skinner, minimum class level 43, with skinning at least 290 (Mob level x 5). I cannot find these items in the AH! Help!

these is pretty simple. I am a 52 BM hunter and I farm these with ease. Drop rate is not amazing, but not as bad as I was told. Black Wyrmkin die like flies, and Broodlings actually drop them a lot. You'd be surprised.
Black Drakes can be a pain in the ass, and I have to use Bestial Wrath for those. That have a cooldown of 2 minutes, so I can get at least 1 kill/minute.

Might not be worth to farm 45 for shoulders, but what the heck: they look awesome.

scales

coords 33,62 look for Draco'dar on big map. dragons in a circle drop
the best and respawn quickly.

Flamescale Wyrmkin lvl 58 elite best drop

Searscale Drake lvl 57 (flying dragon) also drops but not as well

hunters ice trap won't work on Drake
careful of the Drakes that pat over
the circle.

if you are farming u get rugged
leather and if you kill the
elemental in the pit, you get
essence of earth.

Since th 2.3 patch, all the black wyrmkin in Burning Steppes have been demoted to regulars and had their Black Draginscale drop rate SEVERELY reduced. This is annoying, as I have a 59 hunter who is trying to make a Black Draginscale Breastplate before he levels out of his PvP class

Anyone know where to farm these since patch 2.3?

I did most of my grinding east of Dreadmaul Rock, killing/skinning the all Black Wyrmkin and Broodlings. Took me about 2 hours. Drop rate is VERY low, so be patient.

Getting ahold of these as of patch 2.3 for the Warlock Dreadsteed quest is RIDICULOUS. NONE of these are dropping at all. In a full week of checking the Auction House, I've only seen and bought 2 of them. Too bad I need 3 for the Dreadsteed quest...

Went tonight to gather some black dragonscale for leatherworking but had no luck at all in the badlands this time. Spent about 45 min grinding hard as a 70 hunter and decided to try my luck elsewhere. Went to burning Steps was there for an hour or so, looted
60 rugged leather
25 thick leather
4 worn dragonscales and
8 black dragonscales.
So i guess Burning Stepps is the best place for black dragonscale.

So they gimped their eliteness, great, and gimped their good drops, not great.

And there are no handy elite black dragons in groups to kill, so say goodbye to ever making anything with these scales.

Went to farm them on my druid (70 feral) really annoying. this is for my warlock who wants his mount. the only things that dropped it for me was the same mob who kept spawning a lv 57 flamescale dragonspawn at about 37,47. anyways i would not want to do that again. blizz should make anytyhing have at least 5% drop rate. i probably killed 300 in that time and 1% just wont cut it

same as above not worth the time.. spent 1hr farming SE corner Burning Steps no drops, then killed by ally trying to farm the same thing.... Hope he had the same luck as I.. Happy hunting.. Will return tommorrow and re-post if I have any luck..

I just killed 57 dragons, and didn't get 1 scale. Did

1 scale on a drake i spotted just coming out of blackrock mountain.
Killed the group of wurmkins south of there near a small cave and got another (5 or 6) kills.
came back down and killed the other group of wurmkins close by (another 5 or 6 kills) and took the last scale.

15 minutes to get them all, killed 15 mobs at max.

Omg the droprate sux, needed to get 3 black dragonscales for my lock she needs them to her dreadsteed lvl 60 q, 2 out of 150 in burning steppes dropped, luckely i had one from when my hunter (now lvl 70) was questing there...

Warlock's need these scales to help them with getting their mount. A way to get "Black Dragonscales" is go to Burning Steppes which is North of Elwynn Forest and South of Searing Gorge. Burning Steppes is a level 50-57 place so make sure that you bring a high level with you. (Unless you are a level 60+) Make sure you have a Skinner with you (Unless you are one). For the Skinner, they need to be just about maxed-out. Skinning these Creatures requires high leveled skinning.
The creatures you need to skin are called:

Black Dragonspawn
Flamescale Wyrmkin
Black Wyrmkin
Flamescale Dragonspawn
Black Broodling
Scalding Drake
Scalding Broodling

Once you find them, kill, loot, and get the skinner to skin.
Don't be worried if you kill 10-20 creatures, and nothing drops! It takes a long time. The drop rates are extra low.

If you do not wish to do it this way, there will sometimes be some at the Auction House (Type in "Black Dragonscale" in the top left corner of the Aution window).
You're sometimes out of luck...
If you have a guild, go check your guild bank, and there are sometimes people that put some there.
If your bank is locked, ask your guild leader if you can have the scales that are in the bank.

The ONLY mob that dropped this was the flamescale wyrmkin (58 mob). I killed all kinds of stuff, but I got three of the scales off of these and nothing else. Needed them for the epic warlock mount. If you go far to the southwest in burning steppes, near where it says redridge mountains on the map you will find these. There are more up in the mountains. After two hours of grinding, got them off of the wyrmkins in about fifteen minutes.

I get these all the time, though I rarely sell them instead I pass them down to hunters that need the set for fire resist, or Warlocks that need them for their mount.

I found the best place to get them is BWL, I almost always walk out of there with over a full stack of scales. UBRS is the second best place IMO. The best way to get it, is to ask the raid leader to set it to free for all during both supression room clearing (both the clearing up to Broodlord, and the clearing of the room so you can kite). Nothing good drops off the Supression room mobs.

Since I start playing a year ago the price on those scales was very stable.
Lately they have become cheaper and cheaper something like 8G per STACK
(instead of 20++).

Any reason for this (drop rates? dupes? recipes?)

The 1g5s is referring to one scale. People will usually pay at least 20g for a stack... at least on my server (Azgalor). I've been skinning them off of dragons in the steppes while I grind, but I don't think I would farm there because they drop too rarely... I usually get a rugged or a thick. as DaAzn said, I think UBRS is the best place, even if there is another skinner in the group.

Upper Blackrock Spire is the best place to skin these (assuming you can find the groups). I usually come away with at least a stack of these when the run is over (assuming I'm the only skinner of course).

Recently, I went to farm some of these scale to make some Black Dragonscale armor for a guildie.

Lemme tell ya, good luck getting them now.

I don't know exactly when it happened, but I can no longer get these scales to drop. (Yes, I am a skinner.) What was once a rough 10% droprate, has now failed to drop at all.

I even got a guildie to come with me and watch, and he's verified, that after several hours and a tally of over 1000 kills, no scales were skinned off any mob in the Burning Steppes.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have been farming for just over an hour, using the Black Wyrmkin, Black Drakes and Black Dragonspawn. In this time have had two Black Dragonscales, two white dragonscales as well as a blue and 3 green drops. On top of this lots of leather for the auction house. Worth the effort for both grinding and gold.

I would highly suggest farming these with a character than can easily farm the elite dragonkin around Burning Steppes rather than waiting for the low chances to skin from non-elite drakes. My hunter could solo these at 55 when I did Dragonkin Menace, so don't subject yourself to farming the broodlings, waiting for an UBRS group, etc.

Note: I was looking to see what the skinning leveling it takes to skin black dragonscale and im currently 280.

I will say you will be fine if you skin any scalding broodlings

You will not be able to skin any flamescale dragonspawn
