The great thing about these, is that they can be placed in the keyring. This means you can just blow them as levelling items (to gain levels in blacksmithing) and leave them in the unlimited space that is your keyring in case of an emergency. I agree, not the most efficient way of opening locked items but still not an awful one

Can only a Rogue open locks? I am a Pally using Silver Skeleton Key to open a locked Battered Chest. After a timed attempt it says You do not have sufficient skill. How do I increase or gain skill?

As a 'blacksmithing' 'hunter' I can make these, but up till now I have not been able to open anything with them. A friend sent me a practice lock and the silver key worked on it. But there was no notice of increased skill or gained skill. Anyone got any info about weather anyone other than Rogues can gain picking skill? As far as I know they don't even need a key. So what good are the keys?
Also what is this 'disenchants into' list all about.

Works fine to open locked chests in Stockades and Gnomeregan(Large Iron Bound Chest if I remember well).

-.- the NORMAL Skeleton Key is a quest reward from a chain in Western Plaguelands... it has NOTHING to do with the lockpick keys.

Why don't you read properly before spreading false information around?

whenever i make those keys they dont show up in any of my bags, so i cant use them for anything. is this a bug or am i forgetting something?

To the left of all your bags is a slot for keys (has a picture of a key - funny that :P). Its quite skinny - I had to ask a friend where all my created keys went too :P

ok then, lots of mixed info here. each type of key Ie silver, gold, truesilver will work up to a certain level lock box. A gold skeleton key will open an iron lockbox and lower. i am not one hundred percent on what keys open what boxes so i will not make a list that may be incorrect. However it seems to be that that the metal of the key corresponds with the metal it spawns from. for example gold spawns from iron so the gold key will open an iron box. The reinforced boxes may or may not be the exception. i think you need the next level of metal.

From the wiki -

A type of Key that a blacksmith can create and use that will unlock a locked Container depending on the level of Lockpicking skill required to open the lock. Only blacksmiths can use a skeleton key.

In general, a rogue's lockpicking skill is more convienent, because skeleton keys are used up when a lock is opened.

A blacksmith with some skeleton keys can be useful when there are no rogues around who can open the lock.

The silver skeleton key also opens the Defias Gate (Deadmines) if you don't have blasting powder for the cannon to blast open the door.

The Blasting powder is right by the door in a side room there should be no need for a silver key in the deadmines

I just made a bunch of these (both to increase skill and to open things) but they never showed up in my inventory? Is it supposed to be like that or is it a glitch or what's up? o.O

This key can be used to open Heavy/Ornate Bronze lockboxes. I haven't yet tried this on a locked chest yet. Will be updating this space in the future

Every time I try to use a skeleton key (any lvl key) it says "Skill level not high enough." Am I supposed to practice opening locks or something? I'm at a loss.

My blacksmith has made some of these but if I try to use them I get skill not high enough. My rouge is not a blacksmith and the key says requires blacksmith(100) My blacksmith skill is 142 but can't get the key to work - any comments?

I have tried twice to make the silver key and both times I got a success message in the chat window and saw the little icon drop into the backpack but then there is no key in the backpack. Is the recipe broken? Removed from game?

its better to get a rogue to open things. this key can only open low level items and it is consumed in the process.. rogues can open high level items much faster and can do so for free. besides, by the time i could make this, it was useless for the chests i came across in the instances. but thats also because im a big slacker with my proffs =)

I have managed to open boxes with keys, but i have also made all the other keys including mithril and i seem to get the sam error now. 'Skill level not high enough'
