I have to confess that during my time as a blacksmith, I never even seriously considered making one of these. Why blow an arcanite bar on something like this? Is there a use that I'm not seeing?

Obviously there are doors that require some serious lock opening ability, but why not just bring a skilled rogue? Is there any serious use for these keys?

Some people are just lazy. Same thing applies in the real world, why would you spend money on fastfood when you can do a bit of extra work and get more for your money.

An Arcanite Key will open an Eternium lockbox.

I just tested it to see if it was possible and it most certainly certainly is.

Is it worth it? In most cases no it is notm as the cost of the Arcanite Keu outweighs the benefits.

It is far easier to ask a kind rogue to open a lockbox for you then to waste money on creating an arcanite key.

Best part about this key is while it may cost a fair coin to make, it can open most Chests, so in an instance with no rogue, after the group is done, you go back through and take all the locked chests.

Works on chests in ramparts/BF so far tested (early BC instances). 60g chests are ftw.

so you can spend the gold to make 2 keys. my server averages 7-8g a bar. i think it would be worth it or you can spend the time trying to find that experianced rogue that could very well take you over an hour.

the keys don't cost anything if you just fly to burning steepes and spend like 20mins there mining. you will get the mats to transmute the arcanite bar. It's a arcane crystal and a thorium bar. then find a person that has alch and they can transmute but it has a 24 hour cooldown.

meh I made about 20 of them with the excess arcanite I had from pre-tbc, used them a few times when leveling in outland instances, they top out with the fel iron chests unfortunately and there is no newer key for the higher chests.

Over-all the cost on them is pretty reasonable now, but they still aren't overly useful. I'd only use them on outland instance chests (decent rewards), not old world stuff, but I'm not going to make anymore due to the fact I'm not 70 on my paladin and all the chests are too high for me.

ok just for everyone saying these "arent worth it"

they are COMPLETELY worth it if you know what you are doing...ever finish an instance but u had no rogues to open the chests? well...think about this...

the chests in higher lvl instance such as bf/ramps that can be opened by these have about 50-60g in them...y not wait until ur group is done...then LEAVE your group..go back...open the chest...and have EVERYTHING in it to yourself...including the 60 gold and everything else in it...

maybe this will show people that things like this do have a purpose.

I'm using Arcanite bars to level my blacksmithing... since all the plans including thorium are a pain to mine this is a nice little easy way to get it up, you can get arcane crystals from mining/ah and low amounts of thorium for descent prices. Tip the Xmuter 5g, and you have a nice way to lvl your blacksmithing... and as a plus they pay for themselves if you run blood furnace or ramparts without a rogue. Thats Just the approach I'm taking, feedback is welcome.

Yeah, they give an easy 5 to 10 points of smithing skill. I have been farming Winterspring for thorium, and i have over a stack of the crystals, its hard finding someone to transmute it though... Found an alchemist leveling off of it too, so that worked pretty well.

When will Blizzard get around to making fel iron,adamantite and khorium keys?I'm surprised they didn't do this when BC launched.

Lets be clear, gents. The chests the can be opened with these keys in BC (bound fel iron, etc) will NOT contain 50-60g. They will contain 5-6g. So weigh that cost, plus the gamble of any blues or green you'd get, against the cost of buying/farming the mats.

Like elri said above, some people have arcane crystals and arcanite lying around from pre-tbc. A great way to lvl up smithing and if you can plug each one into a bound fel iron chest after an instance, you'll find that is reason alone to make them. Don't go out of your way to buy the mats or farm them if you can help it, they're just a little bonuses.

I make it a point to have these keys on me. Previously, as an Engineer, I could not afford the mats for blasting charges, however as Blacksmith and Thorium farmer, Arcane Crystals are candy!

Although I have a 375 Alchemist alt, if you do not just ask a guildy or pay at the most 5g for a transmute and you'll have an Arcanite bar! Since you farmed the mats, it's really cheaper.

It's kinda nefarious, but if you're in a group with no rogues, just pass all the chests and finish it out, wait till everyone leaves and take all the chests. There can be quite a few of them sometimes! 6-8g per chest, plus a green and the rare blue, and it really didn't cost you much!

I�m a level 60 rogue I unpick all boxes for free, is there a door in the game like the one in Dm that can be opened with this key � and you don�t have a rogue with you?

-Still as an alchemist it�s completely absurd to make a key out of an archnite bar.

Worst use of arcanite ever.

As previous posters have noted, the only reason to ever make these is for those rare situations when your group doesn't have a rogue. Even then, chances are whatever is in the chest won't make your money back.

To the person who said they skipped thorium, you have missed that fact that all the keys are made from the RARE version of the metals usually mined eg.

Silver is rare tin spawn - Silver key
Gold is rare Iron - Gold key
Truesilver is rare Mithril - Truesilver key
Arcanite is rare (sort of, it's make from) Thorium - Arcanite key

I have tons of arcanite in my bank. (hovering around 200 bars atm) I have used ~20 bars or so (because I can with all the spare arcanite laying around) to make these keys. I've did numerious UBRS runs w/o rogues and have come across locked chests. The individuals in the raid weren't happy when I said that since I'm unlocking with my key, I get the loot. I've recieved multiple rares and an epic doing this. Call me a ninja?...for the price of the keys, I think it was only fair...

Is this key able to open the Viewing Room Door in Scholomance?
Just curious, imo, is harder to get an Arcane Crystal and transmuting it than getting to Rattlegore.

ok 3 points to cover
1 the price of arcanite is quite bad on most servers (20g-35g)but the crystals arent to bad (9g-14g on my sever) so +1-2g for the tranmute that max 16g and get 2 keys from 1 bar so 8g max
2 for leveling blacksmithing its not to bad but as alread pointed out there are cheaper ways of doing it
3 only really worth useing these in UBRS/Strat/or the new BC instances but avarage lock box is only worth about 5g-10g (more in BC)with the chance of rare loot so its a choice do i want to risk 3-4g per box for a chance of rare loot

I want to know if these will open locked chests in Outland instances. I have several stacks of arcanite just sitting around and am thinking of making some of these.

Making arcanite keys may seem like wasting arcanite, but if you get thorium for free (mining) and arcane crystals for free (mining) and can have a guildie transmute that into arcanite for free, you can use it however you want not worrying about cost. Either way, I was curious and wanted to see if the arcanite keys works in Outland and they do, or at least in Hellfire Ramparts on the locked Fel Iron chest (speaking from experience).

This is realy good imo coz they can open chests in outland instances (have tried mana tombs and underbog) and ive goten 1 rare out of each chest.
And cuz im bs and no rogue is around ill need on all roll things in the chest since it only fair imo. My party can be happy that they got 1 g (both chest ive opened have had 5 g in them) i did it once and they got a little pissed but they got over when i explaind it.

Totaly worth. Im always gona have 2 on me since they dont take up bag space.

opens lock in mana tombs,hellfire citadel (no shattered halls) and underbog/slavepens.
ive opened 4 chest and goten 3 blues and 1 green and since its my key i need on the blues.

One noob got pissed and called me a ninja and left but the other one in party thought it was fair.

Totally fair. We pay money and/or use our mats to make keys so our group can open a chest that would normally be left unopened. The group gets cash for doing absolutely nothing and we get a little something extra. I just point out that they could either let me have the drop inside or the chest stays locked and they get nothing. Never had a problem so far.

If they disagree, I'd just wait till the run is over and go back to unlock it for myself when theyr gone. Just go with it and don't be greedy. ;)

hey ,I'm just trying to level my BS skill. I have an alt that can create acranite bars np.
This is obviously a skill generating ability. Way better than spending time getting mats if you have a good guild or other means of obtaining the mats. Super easy.

But I dont have the guild, just alts....where can I find this pattern ...I've searched for trainers(but thott has changed) and done the the ol' run around. Pls ...where is it?

Confirmed they do not open the fel-iron chest in ramparts or blood furnace. When though 6 keys to find this out.

Yes 2 years ago these where not cost effiant to make but now adays if you have a BS and a Alchemist it is the cheapest way to lvl your BSing from 275-300, so you have some stacks of thorium, but quite simply Arcanite crystals now cost about 1-2G each, so yes you use a CD to make a bar and you spend say 2G to make it using one of your thorium... this is still alot cheaper then oh the 24 thorium bars it takes to lvl it otherwise because yes you may spend 2G for the crystal but that saves you 23 bars of thorium which at this time go for about 16G a stack, so figure it saves you 14G per lvl for 25 lvls to get BSing up to 300

How many keys are made w/one arc bar? I've only made truesilver skeleton keys, and they make 2 keys w/one set of mats. If this made 2 or 3 keys per bar, it wouldn't be that big a loss of money per barr, cosidering the key is worth 10g.

Anyone know?

I've found very few things this key can't open, its the equivalent of a warrior having 300 lockpicking, and as pointed out already, its nice to have this with you at all times. Unless you have a portable rogue with you, these keys come in handy alot

true a rogue will love to lvl without tipping :D
but i'm BS / miner and i pull thorium and arc crytals outta the ground for free when i'm just grinding, guildie has alc formula so the keys are free. best to sell bars really, however i've noticed alot of rogues just lie about lockpicking skills, have seen a few after boss is dead in a dungen and ppl start hearth'n out the rogue waits til you all leave then runs back to the box lol. i caught one red handed in shethekk halls lol

so i guess i'll try arc keys on one of them boxes, i expect they're still to low but like i said free keys for me

Umm, how quickly you forget about Bound chests... If your not a rogue and soloing something, you cant open the really hard chests, which usually have something worth while in it, without a key. So being a 60 paladin, and 300 blacksmithing, I understand the brilliance of these keys, but you can usually get a friend alchemist to transmute for free or cheap if you as a miner get the crystals while mining rich thorium anyway. o_O

Yes, let's spend 40g or more to make a key to open a lockbox when you can tip a rogue like 1g and they'd gladly open it. Instance doors all have quests you can usually do to get the key for free ('cept that damn scholomance key).

Keys are completely pointless, if you can use them, then you can make them...however it might provide an easy way to level up blacksmithing if it's orange at 275, if you consider getting arcanite bars easy.
