88.25 is a very good spot to farm the scales.
In the water and on the beach are wavetrashers.
Other places the wavetrashers are to spread out.
But still not many mobs to kill. Very annoying quest.

I took me three days to get all 6 scales.. I suggest you buy some water breathing potions cause you may be under the water longer then you think and may drown. Good Luck hunters... this quest took me a long time to complete

Drop rate is much better than the previous part of the chain, but the mobs are in water which makes them annoying to track down and kill. Still, took me much less time than the coursers.

coords are very good did this 1 in about 30-40 minutes once i found it. i will say this quest caused me to finally download a map coord UI. was glad i did. for those who dont have coords. the area is called "The Tower of Eldara" sits on the northern coast bout halfway down it. Turn on your track animal and you should have no problem. thanks to those who posted the great coords.

Yeah, thanks for the coords. They weren't the best spot for me specifically though. I found low aggro and a bunch of them at 89 29, but the general area is pretty good as a whole. I got two within the first 3 kills, but after that, they were duds for a long while. I got the last 4 scales within 5 kills of each other. That beach is definitely the place to go.

Where are the damn thrashers? I've looked all over azshara coast only found two, neither of which dropped scales.

Most creeps in a mixed area, an area with various creatures or the same kind with different names, share spawn points.

In other words, kill only wavethrashers, and a turtle, makura, or murloc may spawn in it's place as well, virtually wiping out wavethrashers.

Kill everything in the area they are in: turtles, murlocs, makura, and the thrashers... and you will notice them spawning more often...

Good spot is 87,26.

Farthest Northeast Beach..jagged reef.. believe

near bitter ridge.

On map its north of the phallic looking peninsula.

Its the only place u can ride down to the beach from the NorthEast.

You can find plenty of Wavethrashers on the eastern coast of Azshara, instead of jumping off the cliff or swimming around. Coords 85,19-27. I found all 6 scales within a matter of minutes from the spawn there. Good luck!

I highly recommend using Hydrocane or some other type of underwater breathing and swimming around the peninsula mentioned here (Tower of Eldara). There are a ton of Wavethrashers in the water. I collected my scales quickly this way. Good luck!

Yet another of Blizzard's cruel jokes, a.k.a. "the Timesink Quest" or "Kill-Ten-Thousand-Mobs-For-Six-Drops" quest. I've killed 20 of these things so far with 1 scale drop. The vast majority of these wavethrashers are indeed underwater. The fact that you can't "eat" or "sit" while swimming further exacerbates the crappiness of this quest.

This quest is a bit less pointless than, say, spending $15 a month to catch imaginary fish...but not by much.

I just did this quest last night, and I've found that the Younger Wavethrashers are the best. I killed about 10, and got all my scales. Finding them, might be a problem. I swam from the eastern tip of the coast, all the way around to where the continent connects with Winterspring, and found maybe 6 of them or so, but on the way back, I found a few more and killed them. Every single one I killed dropped a scale.

I helped a friend get these scales, and we killed about 20, no scales. I left the party, and they started to drop. Killing them in melee seems to do the trick. Didn't have the pet either, but not sure if that helped the droprate. Dunno if you can't be in party, but i basically killed thm all when in party. I guess you just have to drop them without help is all.

Yes, Melle the Wavethrasher. Drop chances increases. I killed around 10 with range, droped 1. I killed around 7 melle drop other 5.
The trick is Start the fight melle. Then let the pet take agro. Try not to range.
I dont no why but found it easier to kill when melle.
Dont forget to use Feign Dead in case you have low HP.

After swimming around the Bay of Storms killing wavethrashers and getting one scale, I headed up towards the Tower of Eldarra as others have suggested. I took my other 5 scales in less than 10 minutes up there.

If you see a lot of murlocs, turtles, and other mobs, try killing off some of those and hope for wavethrashers on the respawn.

If you're like me, you like to at least start the quest and grind and *!@#, before you resort to Thottbot.

Bad idea, in this case.

Listen to the other posters, and go North of the Tower of Eldara.

In fact, go up there to let's say 88,17, and hit up the YOUNG Wavethrashers.

They dropped it at a MUCH higher rate than teh regular Wavethrashers.

I killed maybe 20 Wavethrashers to get my first 3 of the Q item, and I had to kill just 5 YOUNG Wavethrashers to get the last 3 Q items.

man this sucks ive killed over 12 and only gotten 2 then i found like a herd of them and i kill them (there were 7) and i only got 1 wave scale is there any certian way to kill them please help

I start feeling like a submarine now with a very bad supply of oxygen to go sub-merged. Speed also feels like I'm on some patrol exercise. First person view increases the realism. This imagination I guess is the only way to stay sane while swimming the endless coast in search for the scales. And it's not really like they're many in one location.

I started the sea patrol by traveling out to the flight platform for the runes quest killing some treshers en-route. An observation was that the Greater Wavetreshers seem to drop the scales more frequently than the normal and young treshers (I got 2 in 4 kills I think).

Smart as I thought I was I made the patrol go back to the quest NPC because I thought I would get these drops on the way back. But no, endless line of killed treshers was leading me all the way up on the northern coast and I was starting to run out of patience.

Summary: You'll need a lot of patience on this part of the quest chain, but it isn't half as pathetic as the Antler quest before this one. And don't do my mistake, go for the Greater Wavetreshers and remain in these waters (southern coastline).

These monsters are mainly a bit deeper into the water, so you have to be a bit out in the water.

Young Wavethrashers probably drop the most scales, i killed about 25 of the Wavethrashers and gave up on them, but when i started killing the young ones, I got 3 in 5 minutes :) Gluck!

haha lol got mine after 8 kills mainly young wavethrashers im a lvl 50 hunter.
But even though i only killed 8 i still think it took way to long this quest really suck and the rewards for it is not really that great!...

I'm a lvl 52 hunterjust finished this quest it actually isnt that hard.. at Tower of Eldara in the water spawn of Trashers..just send pet in and range use no spells or heals tho this lowers the drop rate.. got mine in 10 kills

Just did this at lv 55 (had forgotten about the quest til today).

1. I threw up track beast, Aspect of the Hawk, and went to the north of the beach and tracked down Wavethrashers, just plain old Wavethrashers. They were a little scarce and I had to do some swimming to find them, but managed to find them easily enough. (Fyi, Azure Belt (+15% to swim speed) is nice to have on hand for any job). I'd also recommend water breathing potions. I found all my wavethrashers around 56,34-69,34.

2. Sent in cat, stood back and used ranged attacks, Hunter's Mark, Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot.

6 kills, 6 scales.

Honestly, I don't think anything affects drop rate other than pure luck.

from 53,40 to 83,21 i swam, i killed a total of 10, and got my 6 scales... easy... where as teh courser antlers... i killed like 70 of the buggers and got the antlers on the alast 3 kills.

Okay, all these "OMG USE RANGED NOT MELEE LOL!" people?

I melee just about everything, only using some ranged at the start.

I got the curser horns in about fifty courser kills (had to kill a bunch of those thunderbirds because they take over spawn spots). Got the scales on my other hunter using mixed melee and ranged without worrying about it too.

Melee vs. ranged has nothing to do with it. These quests just have a sucky droprate to force hunters to get some experience because on the hunters I've gotten through this, this is about the level I run into a dryspell of quests that aren't red to me, at least compared to the 40s and 60s.

Also, the best place to find the lower level Wavethrashers is called the Jagged Reefs. It goes from about the 85,40 loc mentioned before, all the way to the north along the border of the Great Sea.

Like others here I followed the quest instructions and farmed the general coastline for the scales, after getting frustrated enough with the drop rate. I checked thottbot.

As others suggested I farmed the coordinates between 81,10 to 91,35. Farmed in a zig-zag motion , you'll find the thrashers on the coast and deep off the coast line. Eventually got them all.

Great spot is above Tower of Eldara ( 90,33) along the coast and some in water.

You can also go along the Jagged Reef, there are a lot in the water.

And the drop rate isn't as bad as everyone says it is. The most irritating part is running around trying to find the thrashers. It took me around 45 minutes to entirely complete this quest.

Hmm... i did this w/ a partner once, and we got no scales, we went through the whole coast 3 or 4 times wiping out about 40 or 50. this morning i went and first one i killed dropped one. and i got lucky and 6 out of 7 dropped it.

I recomend killing the Young Wavethrasher's as well. Drop rate was great (much better than those antlers..) took me no more than fifteen minutes :) Plus got a gold pearl and a black pearl in the mix.

I found the Young Wavethrasher easier too kill. There was about 1000 more of them than the Greater ones. They're north. Just look at the map. they are also easier too kill. It took me 10 minutes too get all 6. But when I tried the greater ones it took half an hour without success

go to the very eastern coasts line and don't swim at all. If you swim you are going to be pissed off in no time because this quest sucks that way. There are a lot of reg wavethrashers on the beach on the eastern tip / coast.

First of all, YES THEY ARE TRACKABLE! Second, the area to the east, where the penninsula is at the Tower of Eldora (sp?). All the water immediately around the tower is the place to farm these.

Try going to the north eastern parts of the map.. has way more young ones there..

Go from killing hundreds of Deer for 2 antlers to now searching for an hour to kill 1 thing.

I killed only a half dozen of them. Got 2 scales. Hard to find them since they are not trackable.

This quest is a bit of a pain.... not many Wavethrashers plus poor drop rate - took about 1.25 hrs. Had most succes in water (with water-breathing potion), and SE of Tower of Eldara

While they are not tameable, just put up track beasts and it makes these guys a little easier to find.

I had an eaiser time with the anlters than i did with this one...only had to kill three deer to get both the antlers. Im going on half an hour and a good 40 kills under my belt and not a single scale yet. I have farmed both the normal thrashers and the young ones.

this quest blows. i hunted for about an hour, and not only does the drop rate suck, but also the wavethrasher is never there. at the most i ever found roaming at one time was 5 of them... and with a drop rate (for me) of around 5%, i'm looking at a couple of hours.

hopefully, the green drake will be more straight forward.

Just wanted to let folks know not to bother with any spot other than a loop from 58,7 to 73,5. Killing the Young Wavethrasher variety of quest mob in this area will let you finish this quest in ~15 minutes.

Courser antlers: 6 kills

Wavethrasher Scales: none after 15 kills and counting....

EDIT: never mind I guess all you have to do is complain on wowhead and you'll start getting your drops. First kill after commenting dropped one.

Skip this questline- the droprates are so abysmally low and the rewards suck. You're just killing 50+ monsters for nothing; you would have gotten better xp elsewhere.
