If you take a flying taxi or walk out of range of the voidwalker summoned with this (possible especially by telling your voidwalker to "Stay"), you do get a free soul shard back. This gives the additional use of being able to give a free soul shard every half hour if you should find that helpful.

my advice is to try get a drakestone of shadow wraith from Sunken temple and pair it off with a main hand weapon with + spell dam , thou this combination is hard to get you end up with about 20-30+ more shadow damage depending on the main hand weapon. by doing this u don;t need the staff. eg https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=7714.

the robe is relpaced by either by T 0.5 or if u have BC replaced by Whispering Tunic https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29926.

the shard however can be useful at any stage in the game because you can only get it once, i has uses but it is used in rare events of warlocks not having soul shards and by lvl 70 you really done use the Vw anymore being replaced by the Felguard or the Imp.

i choose the robe myself because i got the drakestone/main hand weapon combination. All of these items become useless at some stage so just choose one that looks cool or one that gives the most upgrade

I'm level 70 and I still use all the time when farming. Not that it takes a whole lot to create another Soul Stone, but I'll take a free summon every thirty minutes.

Felguard is beefy, but I still much prefer the VW for tanking. Felguard requires too much maintenance.

That and my Mage, Paladin friend can successfully 3-man ALL of Blackrock Spire using the VW as a tank, lol - all of LBRS all the way up to Drakkisath.

But yeah, I don't regret my choice of choosing this trinket at all. It's in my bags at all times.

for post expansion i can say for a fact that the robe and weapon are replaced immediately after you enter hellfire when you cross over. This trinket is amazing and saved me in many a pinch even at lvl 70.

I was already 60 when they added this quest long ago with all the other level 50 class quests, and never did this. Now I may go back and do it as it can easily be done at 70 with no problem. The robe and staff are not too bad for their level, but will be replaced within the first few quests of Hellfire. This item however, is timeless.

Master Summoner and Fel Domination both reduce the summon cast time of this trinket, just like any regular summon.

I cannot think of a single situation where this would be useful, a demonology lock completely replaces void with felguard, an affliction lock drain tanks with an imp, a destruction lock uses demonic sacrifice... The only way this would be useful is for a pre-felguard demonology warlock and since it is a L50 quest there can't be many of those.

It's useful in a pinch, as another person already commented.

You're not gonna replace it with a better amulet that summons a voidwalker for free.

But you are going to replace the staff or robe.

A fun, although somewhat stupid use for this trinket, is in PVP. Consider a demo lock wanting to take multiple targets at once, sacrifices the voidy to get the bubble, then when it wears off, uses Fel domination. When the second bubble wears off, this trinket can be used to summon another (at the cost of 2 shards, instead of 3.) This isn't the best usage of shards, but it promises to make your opponents pretty angry.

People seem to be missing the benefits of this item.
I'm planning on using this at 70 for arena.
Imagine having a destro spec involving Fel Domination/Master Summoner, along with Imp Voidwalker.
You summon a voidwalker before the arena starts, sac it, summon another one, arena starts. You sac this void when your old sac wears out. Then, you make a macro involving this trinket, Fel Dom and Master Summoner, and you have another Voidwalker to sac free of mana or soulstone in a total time of .5 seconds. Thats three voidwalker sacs free of mana. Not to mention you'll have Imp Healthstone with this spec, giving you even more HP at your disposal.

Take this trinket when you get to choose your quest reward, I didn't and I still regret it. As a sacrifice destro spec I sacrifice the voidwalker a lot when questing/grinding and I use him to solo old Azeroth instances. Since you can't get new soulshards there this trinket would be a godsend. Shame on me for not taking it back then :)

I thought of one good use for it ...

The Demonic Sacrifice talent, when you use it on a Voidwalker, gives you an undispellable buff that restores 3% of your total health every 4 seconds. It only works as long as you don't summon another pet, but often in instances you don't want a pet around. You can Life Tap to convert health into mana if you need to, so this is basically a constant influx of health and mana, taking a burden off the healers. The duration of this buff? 30 minutes. Same as the cooldown on this trinket.

So, if you've got DS and are in a situation where a pet isn't required, this Abyss Shard trinket means constant health and mana, forever, for free.

Well, the scythe will stop being useful once you get some epic gear, so this should be the obvious choice. If it wasn't for one tiny detail...

The scythe looks so insanely cool that you just have to have it, even if you only use it in town or for PvP.

This is probably the first quest I needed to think before choosing the reward. After reading these posts and especially the Demonic Sacrifice part, I just had to try it out. Lets say you have about 3000hp the demonic sacrifice then gives you 90hp every 4 seconds. A normal mob at my level(54) hits you with about 90dmg each hit. They hit you maybe twice in 4 seconds. That means you get back full hp for each second hit. Not bad. And considering this as a thing you would use in instances for the most part, where you have a tank and fellow fighters, this would mean you could use lifetap quite often without losing any hp and die. continues-->

If you read above...
Consider you also spent 21 points in affliction. That gives you siphon life in addition... I don't have it yet, but picture yourself throwing SL on mobs in addition to Fel Stam. Then you have 15hp(rank1) from each mob to plus on the 90hp from Fel Stam. If a lock could be a healer.... you would never hear: OOOM or Need mana from your healer again. :) I'll go for the trinket. I cry each night for not having the Scythe, but I have a better one....

best trinket ever ! in late game you are going to use it to farm shards between the battleground queues. Don't get that staff, you will find a better one, but you won't find that trinket a second time !

I think you are all forgetting the true and obvious purpose for this trinket. When you go to solo a low lvl instance for drops (I still need a damn Shadowfang for my twink) none of the enemies will give you a shard since they are so low. This allows you your best grinding pet once every 30 mins for free (your pet shouldnt die that often in those places). I can continually grind SFK or VC WC, or anything I can solo effectively with this.

truly, I have already used this trinket maybe 12 times... the ability to summon a free void is absolutely remarkable, and will NEVER go out of style. think about how often you summon your void... now think that once every half hour, that summon would be totally free... it's great, I am telling you!

For the most part of my warlock career, I was a demonologist. I am surprised people post that with talents this gives a 0.5 second cast free VW.

The 0.5 second cast VW is next to mana free already. It is under 100. Using the trinket wastes the point of it.

The beauty is that it is a manaless (and with talents) 6 second cast VW. There were several boss fights that I lived through because I can sack 3 VWs for 7800 hp total in absorption shields for next to no mana cost.

How many trinkets give a 2600 hp shield every 30 minutes? Use it and throw in a different trinket for the down time.

How many trinkets give a 2k mana pool that you can tap if you have dark pact before getting the shield?

Now that I have dropped Demonology, this trinket is even more precious. Spending almost 1400 mana in the middle of a fight on a replacement VW hurts. Bad enough I have to spend 10 seconds.

I'll give another example of how it is useful. It is a trinket, not a spell. It is not stoppable by silence. I am not 100%, but I don't think it can be stopped by other game mechanics like kicks and shocks either. Stun and polymorph would be the only ways guaranteed to stop a warlock from summoning a VW with this.

This trinket gives an ability you won't find elsewhere and may be replaceable by end game content. The other items are easily replacable even before end game raids.

Ok, everyone knows already that this is a Pro' trinket, but in the new patch you can leave your pet on "stay" and walk away, it de-sommons - then you get a free Soul Shard every 30 mins. For those people who need the odd shard quickly for a sommon when you forgot one etc, this is for you. Or it could be used to sommon the far supirior Felguard. (which may I add is a better tank then the Voidwalker due to the fact is does damage and does cleave - I think this doubles the use of the VW's AoE taunt).

Let's think about the savings this way:
How about solely using this trinket instead of ever using a shard for a Voidwalker (necessity pending). By simply looking at your bag, you would then have an accurate idea of how many non-Voidwalker pets or shard abilities that you have available at any given time. Definately worth it in my opinion.

I am a lvl. 51 lock. And I will tell you this. No matter what your spec. The voidwalker trinket, in my opinion, is the smart decision. I can't even begin to imagine how much that will come in handy questing. And never again will you have the change to find anything like it.

Here is what I wear, and I think it matches very very closley to the other two rewards in this quest.

Robe of the Magi (+100 health enchant)

I even think the Spire of Hakkar beats the Soul Harvester out of the water. As Soul Harvester only applies +damage to Shadow. Spire applies +damage to both Fire and Shadow. And an extra +16 spirit in addition to the same amount of stamina.

With the health enchant on the Robe of the Magi, your not loosing much at all.

GET THE TRINKET! IT WILL BE WORTH IT!

TAKE THE TRINKET.

You can essentially summon ANY of your demons with it in a roundabout way.

Here's how:

1. Summon your free Voidwalker.
2. Set him/Her to stay.
3. Walk away
4. you get the FREE SHARD from being too far away from your voidwalker - a shard you didn't use to summon!
5. Summon whatever demon you wanted in the first place using the shard.

If you find yourself hanging around in a low-level area, (or are helping out with a lowbie instance run) for a long time, you can use this to farm a soul shard every half hour.

Not take a trinket?
Don't even think it!

think how many locks hate trying to get a soul shard with a im it sucks and at lvl 70 mobs hit hard and fear often breaks and if ur demon spec and you dont have a SS to summon ur felguard well u pretty much suck and the staff yes looks hella cool but u will replace in about 5-6 levels

You have to be kidding me. That shard sucks ass people! I made the same mistake myself by getting it cause I did not know about the cool down. Go with the Rod. F the shard with a 30 min. cooldown its not worth waiting on. Plus the fact that you probly allready need a new staff at that lvl with stats like that & it looks good on Locks to boot.

I often farm in areas such as Winterspring and Silithus now that my warlock is 70.

These areas are rather off the beaten track. There are no mobs capable of giving shards, as they must be level 62 or higher to do so.

Therefore, a destruction or affliction warlock would be suited very well to this trinket. The voidwalker is rather weak in terms of the damage it does, but so is a protection warrior. The point is that it has a ton of armor and is capable of holding a group of 6 or so mobs while you put Seed of Corruption on some of them.

Since it rarely dies unless you absolutely suck at playing warlock, you won't need to summon this pet more than the trinket's cooldown demands.

I wish I had taken this instead of the Scythe, but it was awfully kickass at the time. LoL. Also, there were no zones then worth farming in which I could not get soul shards the normal way.

This quest's value has changed since TBC was released.

This is the most useless piece of *!@# ever, my voidwalker pretty much NEVER dies, and, people say "oooooo but it costs no mana" as a demonology lock, with master summoner, it costs practicily no mana anyway, and a free shard, BIG Fing DEAL, you can get one EVERY SINGLE KILL, geez wtf are you guys thinking

I've been reading over the comments for all of this and I'd like to point something out.

Not every Warlock spams Drain Soul when they kill a mob.

Not every Warlock goes Demonology.

If you ALWAYS have a bag full of shards, or are planning on going full Demonology then this trinket isn't necessarily for you.

However: The other two items will be obsolete eventually, whereas the Voidwalker you summon with the Abyss Shard will always be at level with you.

If you play a destro lock like I do, you can easily burn thru 2-4 shards per battle. So perhaps you'll get one back from shadowburn and another from drain soul and get an equilibrium going. I tend to do this on the fringe with say 5 shards in hand, because I'm not rich like y'all and can afford big bags etc.

It works out well.. however things can go wrong, perhaps a shadowburn resist followed by a mistimed drain soul coz you gained aggro and then you sac your VW to keep yourself alive... uhoh.. Out of shards!

Also, when running a guildie in a low level instance you can't get shards back from burn or drain, so really if you forget to bring much you don't have to be stingy with handing out a healthstone + soulstone to your friend.

Oh. Nobody's mentioned this yet, about the free shard trick - soulstone + trinket cooldown = same, coincidence?

But anyway, the damn scythe looks so cool....

Long story short, I'd recommend this for all destro locks. I can't speak much for demon+affli but from what I see, you guys don't tend to burn thru shards all that much anyways

Ok heres the deal... the staff and robes are both solid for level 50 items. They have good stats, decent + damage and will help you get to level 58 that much faster where you can replace them with quest itmes varly quickly. Also it saves you time because you dont have to do ST 15 times or what not to get the spire of haakar. As for the shard... well i think it is positivly the worst trinket in the game... I have used my void walker mabey.... 5 times since level 50... Its completly usless in instances... ooo a shield in pvp.... and uhh... I guess its usfull if your running a lowbie friend through sm or somthing... so the only posible use for this migh be a free shard every uhh... 30 minutes... really I have played all specs... and yes destructo uses tons of shards... I once used 18/20 shards in one fight (black heart the inciter) and oh noes I didnt pick the trinket... what did I do... uhh just drained the souls of the next 18 or so mobs we killed and forwent using shadowburn... You should never ever run out of shards too... I have done that once... at level 12... after that never again... why... because i know how to play my effin class... I mean locks arnt exactaly a complacated class to play... I mean if you cant play them.. uh roll a $%^&*!@ or somthing... or just quit the game and go find a nice tall bridge to jump off of... you know do the world a favor and remove you genes from the pool. I will tell yout his, there isnt one single time I have ever said to my self... OH noes i dont have a pet... I wish I had picked that damn shard... why... BECAUSE IF YOU NEED A PET THAT BAD YOUR DEAD ANYWAY...

30 minutes is waay too long.

that makes it a "omfg i am out of shards and need a VW NOW" tool at best. But honestly, if you run out of shards then you are not playing the lock right.

If it had a 2-3, even 5 minute cooldown it would be awesome, and i don't think it would be overpowered either -- especially with the same cast time as usual.

FYI, it works with Fel Domination to fast-cast a voidwalker. Don't forget that even if it's cooled down, equipping it causes a 15-second cooldown that you have to wait for before it can be used.

If you plan to use it, a useful trick is to swap it out during cooldown with another trinket you use a lot.

When you use this trinket, does it instantly cast your Void? If so, it would be awsome for PvP, to have a 2 secound cast shield. (Global cooldowns and all that, ya know.) but, if it still takes 10 secounds, then it would be pretty much worthless, cause the VW is a silly nub pet anyway. If your dest or SM/ruin spec, it wont hold agro for more than 2 hits anyway.

Sadly, this trinket is 100% worthless in Classic. The voidwalker you summon with it has a hidden flag that makes it not return a Soul Shard when you run away from it, so you can't use the trinket to get a free shard like you could back in vanilla.

Your inventory slot is better used for just another regular shard instead.
