How many relics are in this game? This is the ONLY one I've ever seen, are there any others for Shaman?

'spell damage and healing' is modified by the cast time, however.. specifically mentioned spells assume that the cast time is already factored in for the number shown on the tool tip.

it says up to 30 to shocks, not up to 30 to 'spell damage'..

therefore: it will add up to 30, not up to 13.. (to shock spells only of course)

also, the totem of life specifically modifies the healing of lesser healing wave by 45, not plus up to 45 'to healing spells and effects'

therefore again: it will add up to 45 healing.. (to that specific healing spell)

this 'up to 30' or 'up to 45' deal could add 1 point, or it could add 30/45 to the actual end damage/healing you deal from that set damage/healing range on the specific spell mentioned.

ie:
Earth Shock: 542-573 nature damage
+30 Spell damage: 542-586 nature damage
+30 Shock spells: 542-603 nature damage

Lesser Healing Wave: 832-928 healing
+45 Spell healing: 832-948 healing
+45 Lesser Healing Wave: 832-973

Does anyone else agree that Blizz should change the wordings on these Totems/Idols. It makes sense to word things as giving "up to +x" when there actually are spells you could use that would give you a +x bonus. But on most of these items the bonus only aplies to specific spells where you will never get "up to +x".

I don't know everything about how these bonuses work, but I seem to recall something about the spell rank being factored in when spells are specifically named (in this case a rank 1 Frost Shock may get a +6 damage, where a rank 4 Frost shock gets a +24)

I believe this is done because the lower rank spells would then get a MUCH more substantial (percentage wise) boost from this type of item, making them more useful than intended at higher levels. Just my 2c.

Believe me its not "up to x"

When a specific spell is included it will add that amount.

The reason it has "up to" is because of lower tanks of the spell being used.

You guys can argue all you want over wether wich way seems most logical, but whatever you come up to doesn't dictate the actual damage it does, so you're wasting your breath. Just get it, and try out the avarge damage differance you do with and without it. Easy, eh?

we left it lying on the body unlooted... shamans in our guilds are crying....

...with a good rogue. I've never seen this tip anywhere, but if you bring along a good 60 Rogue with some FR he can solo the torch holders, vanish, then solo the flame elementals and light the torches. After that the respawns stop.

Oh and this thing has dropped about 2 out of every 5 runs for us.

It just dropped for me yesterday on Magmus in BRD and i didnt know about this idol before, i just needed it and got it... guys i cant tell you the difference it makes to have 30 more on my shocks .. all shamans out there, go and get it ;)

Two things really.

Drop rate. This item was recently added, well after thott started collecting information, that why the drop rate looks like &*!@. It is actually aroudn 20% or so.

Effect. This effect just like the libram give a the entire value that is stated here. Its flat. I have tested it. My adverage over 10 shock without and 10 shocks with was 28.3 damage. over 100 shocks it will prolly be right at 30 damage.

This thing dropped first time i ran for it, a HUNTER needed and won. I ran like 7 more times after and it never dropped again.

Okay please do not be misinformed by this smart ass below me. He seems to know his math however he seems to have misplaced his English Competency.

The totem is +30 to shocks. Not 10, 11, 12, not even 15. 30!

Up tO 30 implies an added 30 damage within the shock range be it 500-545 for example. If it hit for 525 it would therefore add 30 damage on top. It doesn't imply any spell school of casting thus it implies a directlY added weight to spell damage NOT a percentage based on +spell gear.

The same goes for the Totem of Rebirth, GG.

And Yes, Totem of Rage adds "up to 30" to shocks. Instant spells count as 1.5 cast time for the formula:

/ 3.5 * = relative bonus

So all of your shock spells get (1.5/3.5*30~12.857) almost +13dmg, and since it only adds to shocks, Blizzard should have just said so...

Same for Totem of Life's 45bonus ~ +19.286

There are other penalties to dmg spells that add a secondary effect but I don't know all of the formulas. I believe that Frost Shock's slow means the 12.857 has a 5% penalty reducing it to 12.214, etc.

Oh, and shamans get "Totems" for relics while druids get Idols and Pallies get Librams

the relic items do not add +dmg/heal like other items do. they add a flat boost to the max rank of the skills mentioned. ie, this totem adds a flat 30 dmg to your shocks. if your earthshock did 500 dmg before, it does 530 now. simple.

this is not debateable, this is not opinion.
this is fact.
pure and simple.

Really easy to farm him.

Did over 10 runs with just a 60 Mage and Myself(Shaman, 30-0-21) in order to get the new Relic. The runs took about 20 minutes a piece in and out.

The easiest way to get to him:

Zone in and make a left, through the gate. Take a right through the other gate, then a quick left through the door. Have the Shaman(or paladin) just run up the stairs and to the left, with the mage following behind. Just run through all the mobs and jump out the window. Watch out for the guards at the bottom. Run towards Incendius then jump off the bridge to the left. (you can kill him if you want, but not required)

Hug the wall along side of the lava and walk towards the far wall. Stop on the little cliff there and look for the elemental in the lava. Find him and kill your first mob!

Swim across the lava and stop at edge of the island with the 4-5 elementals. Heal up then make a left and hug the wall again til you get to safety(near the black forge)

Now to sneak past the 3 elementals on top of the little bridge there. If the rightmost mob is lvl 56 he will aggro you. You'll have to have the mage naked run through him and pull them over to the left, while the shaman follows behind and gets to safety while still being able to res the mage. If the mob is level 55 or less then you can both just hug the wall to the right and make it past.

On to the Lycaeum. Just do this like normal, find the torch holders and light the flames. A good resting spot is on top of the flame stand farthest away from the corner of the room. Light both flames and head to magmus

Magmus. Have the mage stand away from Magmus and the golems, just DPS burst him down. Shaman open up with LB/LB/CL/ES then tank(ES and RB) and heal himself.

When you don't see your relic drop then get naked and death run it back. Reset instance and repeat. I think it took me 10 tries to get the relic. 4 or 5 Golem helms dropped lol.

It's 30 damaged added onto the shock it isn't 13! It adds 30 damage onto whatever it normally hit for.

This relic, supposedly drops off of the Lava Giant in BRD. We have been farming this boss all day and have come across many nice lvl 50 blues but no relics. The drop rate must be extremely low or we ahve been mis-informed.

I didnt read all the posts cuz too many of the were just rubbish ^^

so here's the deal..

the formula for how much damage is added to a spell from +dmg/healing is:
+dmg/healing * (cast time)/3.5

which means that a spell with 3.5 sec cast time gets 100% of damage/healing added to the damage.
dots that have a duration longer then 14 secs also gets the full benefit from damage/healing.
if it's an instant cast spell the cast time in the forumla is 1.5
any talent I know of that reduces the cast time of a spell does NOT affect this which means that ONLY the base cast time of a spell matters, not the actual cast time with talents.

there are of course some spells that don't work like this but this is the way most spells in this game works and it also covers the shaman's shock spells.

so.. for shocks +30 damage and healing is:
30 * 1.5/3.5
which is equal to 12.857 which is 0,428% of 30.

you dont get 1-30 +damage as someone suggested, it mearly says "up to 30" to be consistent with descriptions of other such effects from other items since those affect spells with different cast times.

I got mine last night, Cant really tell a differnce in the damage but I only have +35 to damage and healing so with this I have a total of 65 dmg to my shocks.

It's rather well documented the way +spelldamage works.

The modifier is dictated by spell cast speed, instant spells are taken to be 1.5 seconds for calculation purposes.

The reason this is done is so +Spell damage adds the same DPS and keeps fast spells from becoming overpowered.

Let's take two examples,

Spell 1:35 damage, 3.5 second cast
Spell 2:20 damage, 2 second cast

You add +20 spell damage

A 3.5 second cast spell gets the full benefit of +20 damage, which adds about an extra 6 DPS.

A 2 second cast spell gets only part of the benefit of +20 damage (which comes up to around 11), which once again adds up to about 6 DPS.

This is all done for balancing purposes, nothing else. Spell damage adds up to a flat amount of damage per second based on cast time, not a flat addition to spells.

The calculation is different for AoE and DoT and all that jazz.
