These are great fun and last for ages unless you get blown up by another Tonk, comes with 50 charges. Currently Hunters can not equip unless they stable their pet, which means you have to delete a pet if all your stable slots are full, not good :(

So far, I have only seen the mine variety of the tonk. No Flamethrower, Machine Gun, or Shield versions yet. A shame because mines are the weakest IMO.

This can only be used at the fair. I had false hope thinking I could use this as if it was the same battle tonk I got in outlands.

Hostile mobs do not notice the Tonk, even if you shoot at them. These harm other Steam Tonks ONLY.

From what I understand, to use these in Ironforge, jump up behind the pillar to the right of the mailbox and you will be able to activate it. You can also initiate duels back there.

The mats for the Steam Tonk Controller have been reduced in patch 2.3
The new mats are:

3 Mithril Bars/Ores
1 Gold Power Core (You get 3 per Gold Bar/Ore)

A couple friends and I had a 30 minute long fight with these using the orchard next to Tarren Mill as a makeshift tonk arena. Really, really a lot of fun. We were all hoping more variations of tonks would eventually be available and even some way to form opposing teams... The plan now is to get a 25-man tonk fight going in Gruul's Lair... woot!

Fun fact: If you are a warrior with the talent Second Wind, it will proc if you remove the steam tonk buff when you are controlling it, as it will stun you if you remove it. Can be used to build some rage up before you charge into battle :)

I found out something interesting for hunters.

This can be used to instantly dismiss pets, even in combat. If your pet is near death, use this and after 3 seconds when you resummon them, they will be at full health. Making it more effective than mend pet.

This can also be used as a pet version of Feign Death.

I've used this several times to mark mobs that are around a corner or where it's difficult to tab-target through a crowd. Handy little thing to keep around.

Trade 40 Tickets at Darkmoon Faire.

You get the schematic from the Darkmoon Faire. It's a 40 ticket turnin prize that's new with patch 2.0

It works exactly like the Darkmoon Faire Tonks - but now you can play with them ANYWHERE!

You right-click on the controler and it summons the Tonk. You can fight against other players using Tonks as well. This is a blast while waiting for those raids to start up!

Tonks also will NOT aggro anything. Seven of us were using Tonks while waiting for the BWL raid to start and we turned the whole of Razzorgore's room into the ideal Tonk Battleroom while we waited. The Eggs were ideal for hiding tactics. ^_^

Only a few drawbacks to these.

1) 50 charges only, and there's NO way to recharge it. Thankfully the mats are very cheap. ^_^

2) You HAVE to be careful when you deploy the Tonk. The above poster got it wrong as it does not break when you start up occasionally. What it in fact is you have to let the Tonk FULLY deploy before moving about, otherwise it interrupts the deployment and breaks.

3) So far, the ONLY type of tonk you can get is the one that drops mines (no flamethrower/machinegun/shield version like the DMF). Weither this is a bug or not remains to be seen...

4) It seems right now that the mortar secondary weapon cannot hit another tonk and will not do any damage. This is more than most likely a bug.

I heard only Engineers are able to trade 40 tickets to get this schematic.. much like the quests only Engineers "may see"

The mats are pretty cheap and are really easy to sell, I made about 20g in the first 10 mins after I got the scematic.

i just went up to a big tonk in the fair and right clik the control console and it said summoning rc tonk... but nothing happens and i cant move at all i can turn and blink out of it but im still stuck like rooted to the ground or something.... wtf?

Be sure to know that the Schematic is Bind of Pickup, so when you have turned in 40 tickets and recieved it in your bag, it's soulbound. This chould be a real pain in the ass if you is planning to get the Schematic for someone else.

do the crafted tonks work? above post stated the old tonks at the fair are bugged was wondering if the same was true for the player crafted tonk controllers

they work. Can't drive them too far away from yourself but they work just fine. Just made one and was using all the abilities. It all works. Do have to wait a few seconds before moving after you summon one or it breaks and you get stunned. Definitely works.

I just made this and after reading in here I was worried it wouldn't work right. I decided to try it anyhow, so I went to Goldshire to mess around and when I tried it (with my pet still active) my pet was automatically dismissed and the tonk appeared and worked flawlessly.

When I was done I was able to use my whistle to get my pet back with no problems. No stabling needed. It appears that Blizzard has fixed the problem.

I guess I'll have to test out my Mind Control cap now and see if it has been fixed yet as well.

I use these guys in the water. It makes it much more fun. They "swim" just like your character does. For the guns to lock on you have to be moving towards your target. Also a peculiar bug, that makes it more fun... when you lay a mine down in the water it goes all the way to the bottom of where ever you put it. If you drive directly over it, even if you are 100 ft above it in the water, it still detonates. It makes the mines much harder to avoid, especially if you are in a place like the vile reef.

Just thought i'd say once you have a flying mount, Check out the large flat floating islands in Nagrand, They are perfect for Tonk royal rumbles, Just have every player in the center and you have full range of the whole floating island.

You can't use these in cities. You have to be in a place that you can duel in. I think it's dumb. These would sell like crazy if you could use them in front of the bank, instead of having to use it out in front of the city.

:( Wish I'd gotten the recipe now. Spotted it at the faire on my hunter, so logged my engineering rogue and rounded up some goods, got some tickets... Got to the "cashier" and wasnt allowd the tonk recipe! :( I assume its because he isnt high enough level to use it yet. Guess I'll have to level him and try again next faire.
I'm also assuming using a tonk will break stealth/Shadowmeld?

Yepp. Got the recipe as soon as i installed 2.3. Bought it at an engi vendor in IF. The funny thing is that the recipe is BoP even though its white. That was a nasty surprise when i bought one more with my alt and tried to mail it to my friend. I'm a gnome and i got my engi 280-297 with this. Best thing that ever happened since the Thorium shells recipe turned up at the trainer(297-315 WHOHOO). So sad only gnomes get that boost - for all the other races it is already yellow at 275(was orange for me 275-290 - INSANE!)

My bank is a lvl 13 human warlock and I just activated a tonk in SW. Hopefully this just means that Blizzard has fixed the bug, if there ever was one. No idea if they work with hunters. Cheers

if you move the tonk before your view has switched, it will blow up and you will be stunned

also, if you drive outside the tonk's range, you will be stunned

I have been able to use it in instances, but if you scout too far ahead it breaks and you get stunned. Also it seems to not see the mobs when you get too far away, Tried to use it to see Ras in Scholo and Ras wasn't there yet.

They can only be used outside and in instances, and capital cities count as indoors. Also if you make a lot, its really fun to get a bunch of your friends and use it somewhere, even more fun than the Darkmoon Faire because you choose the course you play on. I highly recommend getting the pattern because its easy to get, you can sell them for about 5 gold each, and you can play with friends. Only downside is it has 50 charges :\
