Items and effects cannot ever cause anyone's resistances to drop below 0. This elixir may not be as useful now in PvP, but almost every enemy in PvE (especially in instances and other elites) has at least a small amount of resistances to everything. This will definitely be another buff to add to the DPS Min/Max list.

Does anyone know a way to check if a mob has any resistances to magic besides the occasional boss that has immunity? Is it even common for world mobs to have any resistance, or is that generally just reserved for instance encounters?

Spell Penetration (reduction of the target's resistances) reduces the chance for spells to be partially resisted (and/or the amount by which the damage dealt is reduced). This is a very useful item, although not as good as the direct spell-damage consumables.

Since this is considered a guardian elixir, it's pretty nice. With a battle elixir of your choice you can have 2 elixirs that cause you to do more damage.

There are mods that allow you work out a mobs resistence to the school of magic you use by calculation from the partial resists you get while killing the mob.

MobHealth2 mod will do this simply. However, it only does this for one spell penetration only, which is very annoying.

MobHealth2 calculates a mobs reistence for both direct damage and binary spells. If a mobs resistence shows up as 0, the mobs resistence is equal to your spell penetration or less. If the number is greater than 0, then the mobs resistence is equal to your spell penetration plus that number.

Most world trash has no spell resistence. However, that changes when you go into instances.

As an example, in Gruuls lair.
- Lair Brute - 111 Shadow Resist
- Gronn Priest - 161 Shadow Resist
- High King Maulgar - 141 Shadow Resist
- Gruul the Dragonslayer - 183 Shadow Resist (highest shadow resist boss I have encountered)

I absolutely take this elixir when I can in gruuls lair.

Most bosses have no spell resistance that can be reduced by penetration. This elixir is useless in PvE.
If your spells are resisted, you need more +spell hit, not penetration.

The bosses this would have any effect on would be:

Void Reaver - slight arcane resistance
Supremus - decent fire resistance
And I assume the mage on Illidari Council is what Riceak was referrencing.
However, in a raid enviroment you will have Curse of Elements / Curse of Shadows, and this will negate nearly all of these resistances. Elixir of Draenic Wisdom would be in my opinion a better use of a Guardian Elixir slot.

can anyone give any numbers on this elixir? like how much does it increase your chance to hit? (talking about mobs who have 30 or more res ofc, so you get full use of it)

I bought this in The auctoin house for 5G. I got very very lucky. Havent tried it out yet and it, for some reason, is very hard to sell.

its pretty decent on Surpemeus, even with COE he has over 160 + resist i believe....

This reduces the resistances of (all) your spell targets by 30. It does not apply to other peoples' spells hitting the same target.

Mobs are no longer allowed to have negative resistances, so this has no benefit against mobs whose resistances are already at 0, or mobs whose resistances have already been reduced to 0 (e.g. by a warlock in your group casting curse of shadows or curse of elements).

Similarly, I don't really need to lower the resistances of a level 25 mob when I'm level 70; however against a raid boss with high resists, this could be among the most valuable uses of your guardian elixir slot. Thus it is very difficult to provide math on this saying by how much it will increase your DPS. It all depends on whether your spells can be partially resisted or if they're all-or-none, how much +hit % you already have, the mobs' level and whether its resistances are already at 0, etc. etc.

IMO try it out. I did, and I liked it. Against level 70-73 heroic instance mobs, it grants me the equivalent of somewhere between 1 and 2% chance to hit with spells, plus I see fewer partial resists. Not bad for the price, since I'm an herbalist. Your mileage may vary.

A guild mate linked me this today when i was talking about getting a little more spell penetration. The reason for this was because of a high chance of partial resists. I am already spell capped so full resists are not a problem, but the 25% - 50% - 75% resists can be quite a dps reducer I have found.

I will be testing this pot in Karazhan and ZA next week and will post back if I see a significant reduction in my partial resists. As an arcane mage it should be noticeable if it makes a difference, especially in the second half of Karazhan where the mobs arcane resistance seems very high.

And no, i don’t always have the luxury of a warlock.
