It's important to note that each weapon has 2 slots, with potential others with JC slots. It has a permanent enchantment-slot, basically any enchantment an enchanter can do on your weapon as well as some other items.
A Temporary enchantment-slot, all oils (alchemical or enchanting) poisons (rogue only) sharpening stones (such as this) and shaman enhancement spells (windfury etc.) count as this, adding a new one overrides the old one.

These are absolutely worth it for Rogues farming poison-immune Elementals for primals.

I also tend to use them on the trash between Curator and Aran. The elemental mobs are immune to poisons, so this is a viable alternative to running poisons when you need to get things down fast, especially since these mobs are sadly magic immune and some of the most annoying in the zone. Even if you're mutilate, you end up backstab spamming in that area. May as well get some added damage.

They should work on ranged weapons too. I found this on Thottbot, straight from the buffs description:

This appears to apply to ranged combat. Dual-wielding, this adds 1.27% crit chance at level 70. If you can afford it, it might be worth doing over mana oils for a hunter.

It's also encouragement to dual-wield, instead of using a big two-hander. The permanent enchantments encourage the two-hander.

I use these very regularly for tanking, even w/ a mongoose enchant on my suneater, this helps w/ threat generation.

Side note: As a miner, I get motes of earth while farming admantite so it's a joke to get these going on. Make friends w/ a blacksmith and keep a steady supply going.

As of Patch 2.3 the duration of Sharpening Stones and Weightstones will be increased to 1 hour instead of 30 minutes.

nice, esp considering the crit part of the buff carries over onto your ranged attacks, one of the only reasons for a hunter to DW in tbc

I believe this works like former Sharpening Stones, so you'll still have a sharp weapon after death :)

They are worth about the price of the materials. Seriously, look at the mats needed. That is cheap stuff. I see people trying to sell them at 5g a piece but I just laugh. Then I go buy the mats and have someone make them for me for 1g tip. Cost me a total 1g45s each.

I know rogue poisons interfere with windfury, but do sharpening stones interfere with it as well? Meaning, if you were a fury warrior and put sharpening stone buffs on both your weapons, does that prevent you from getting the windfury buff from a shaman's WF totem?

These are probably just like the other sharpening stones and have a minimum equipment level standard.

As stated in the tooltip, the increase in critical strike rating only applies to melee, not ranged. I tested it today

guys keep in mind that as with all other weapon augmentations you can only have:

one permanent (i.e. enchant)
one temporary (i.e. poison, sharpening stone, totem buff)

so if you plan on using poisons there are useless. These are excellent in raids for bosses who are poison immune (VoidReaver, etc)

I Love sharpening stones, they persist through death and add like an enchant to your weapon :). I highly recommend everyone use one on their swords, axes, polearms so they can do max damage!

weightstones are for blunt weapons such as maces, while a regular sharpening stone like this is for axes/swords, so buy ones that fit accordingly to the weapons you use.

New research shows, that there are quite some cases, when these sharpening stones are better for Rogues than using Poisons!

Guyz, is it better to use Adamantite Sharpening Stone or Elemental Sharpening Stone (from vanilla) for a prot warrior please ?

I thought Elemental was better for the crit but every prot warrior guides I find on the web speaks about adamantite stone but no mention of Elemental stone
