The effect is said to be Detect Minor Invisibility, which would effectively make these unneeded if you are or have a Warlock.

Far enough to notice it from a distance or with a flying mount. It's color is blue-purple like the terrain, so open your eyes! I submitted a screenshot of it, take a look. Anyway it drops 3-6 motes of mana for me, and it's very rare.
It's worth more to grind mana seekers, mana wrath, etc.

Is there any sort of comprehensive list in terms of where the clouds can be found, and what elements they give? To date, I have found:

Mana Mote clouds in Netherstorm
Life Mote clouds in both Zangarmarsh and the Steamvaults instance
Shadow Mote clouds in Shadowmoon Valley

Any other noteworthy ones? You'd think you could at least find gas clouds with Motes of Air. :P

The "Use: Allows you to look far into the distance." is infact "Longsight", the same effect as Ornate Spyglass.

I combine these goggles with mining. Flying all over the place and whenever I'm lucky I spot a cloud and loot some nice motes. A nice extra farming option. One could ofcourse combine this with herbalism aswell.

There's clouds are really really rare and are NOT worth farming,

When putting on the goggles while mounted (or otherwise unable to cast) you do NOT get the buff that lets you see the invisible clouds.

If you have a decent video card, set your enviroment, whether, texture and some other details to high. I dont know about others but it made a HUGE difference and i can easily see lots of vortexes now.

Reading that Warlocks can see the clouds via Detect Invisibility makes me wonder - do these goggles allow you to see invisible players (like a Mage, for instance)?

I ran into about 5 of Nether vortex at Netherstorm in one day and figured i'd try out a few experiments since i've read alot of randomness about it. I was with my girlfriend so was able to see the effects of someone whose never even had the goggles b4.

First off a good way to find these w/o these crappy non bonus buffed goggles is turn on " show energy gains" in your floating combat text in interface options. If your in range of a cloud it will spam "+20 mana" off your toon.

She's usually the one observant enough to see this happen but my gf has no visibility of the nether vortexes at all, whether she was standing on it (like going against a rogue) or not. So i'd pop on my goggles and sure enough it was floating right next to us feeding us juicy mana.

W/O goggles i tried to "vaccum" the cloud but it finished the cast after .1 sec or w/e and also entered me into combat (weird) this was tested over and over again w/ the same result. I threw the goggles on and was able to vaccum it for some expected motes.

I thought it might give less motes seeing as how we were absorbing a grip of "+20 mana" but gave 4motes like the other clouds i encountered.

As for the clouds in Zangarmarsh i WAS able to see the clouds w/o goggles but didn't try as many things as i did w/ the Netherstorm ones.

As for others I cannot say, but i have found that crafting these and disenchanting them for a large prismatic (then selling the shard) i pay 5g for a skill point. I have done this since 355 skill getting a point every time. I have paid ~25g for each pair and sell each shard for 20g.

I am now at 365 skill and they are still yellow. A fairly decent exchange. 5g per skill point is nothing compared to other professions, but i don't know when this goes green/gray.

PS: You may change the large shard into small prismatic just in case AH prices go bad one day you have a back-up plan in the bank.

It works even if you've got tracking set to mining or herbalism so it's great to use whenever you're out mining/herbing.

good item to skill up ur engineering...not to expensive nad if u have friend enchanter u can get 80% of ur money back, cause then disenchant they give u large prismatic shard
so
4x heavy knothide leather 3x4=12
2x small prismatic shard 7x2=14
2x khorium bar 2x4=8
2x deep peridot 1.5x2=3
so it will be ~ 37(on Stonemaul)
and Large prismatik shard 27 gold so it is not much expensive(if u start after 365-370).
problem is just to get recipe =((((

This item gives me no buff, and in an hour plus of wandering around Netherstorm I've yet to find a cloud. There must be some switch or dial I haven't twaddled yet!

But really, should it give me a buff? I mean, they LOOK neat and all, and the mighty stam/spirit buff is fine.

If you're a warlock, don't spend your money on the mats for this. Your Detect Invisibilty spell will enable you to see the vortexes, so you don't need this thing's Detect Minor Invis buff. Unless you want it as a gadget, or instead of an Ornate Spyglass, it's useless to you.
The vortexes regenerate mana when you stand near to them, so you can locate them without any Invis detection as well. Haven't tried if you can use your Mote Extractor on them even if you can't see them yet.

Ok im L45 Warlock at the moment, with an engineering of 291 (So far) im not sure what Xanobia meant, do i have to be L50 or was she/he L50? If it is a L50 Limit to get up to 375 engineering...that sucks...

In Bc they are rasing all the profession lv caps to 400-450 i think, so after BC comes out you'll be able to make them, have fun, Engineering sucks

I can confirm that you can see the mana gas bubbles in Netherstorm. I was questing with a group when I started getting mana from some place. I asked the group and they said it was a mana surge. I put the goggles on and there they were. 2 mana gas bubbles. Each gave 3 motes. I have not seen another after 3 days of running around.

Just figured something else when I found one more. You can't have the goggles on to find them. I had them on and started getting mana regen. I couldn't find the bubble. I took off the goggles and then put them on again, it was right next to me. It helps if you have scrolling combat text. SO gogles only detect them after you get mana surge, THEN you put them on. And you do need them on to extract motes.

Ok i have these, and i wear them while questing in Netherstorm. I sometimes run into a mana-cloud (purple gas) which regenerates mana when i'm close... (even without goggles)

These clouds are visible with goggles (putting on an other helm made it disappear) but only by looking at them. The clouds do NOT show up on your mini-map, nor do you get any kind of visual aid when detecting one (a purple cloud in netherstorm does really jump out of the background >_< ).

The clouds can be extracted with the mote extractor.. the 3 clouds i extracted in netherstorm gave me 5 mote of mana every time.

I was in Netherstorm at lv 69 in the lower right corner (Kerin Var town) and tested using Detect Invisibility - this made a gas cloud appear, and I used the Zapthrottle Mote extractor to extract motes, I don't remember how many but it was at least three.

Warlocks don't need the goggles.

Okay, normally I'm not one to complain. I love Blizzard and everything that is Blizzard.

That being said,

The problem with the goggles isn't the goggles, it's the damn clouds. They are these small purple smoky things. That isn't so bad, well it wouldn't be if Netherstorm wasn't COMPLETELY PURPLE.

The rocks are purple, the gas vents are purple, the lightning is purple, just look around. And now, only with these goggles, are we supposed to spot small puffs of purple smoke on a totally purple backdrop?

Oh, I've found them, after about an hour of flying, and it was totally by accident.

Here's the little secret:

They do a mana surge. So if, and only if you aren't at full mana, and fly by one, you get healed for 20 mana every 2 seconds or so. When you see that, stop everything and look around, cause it's bound to be there.

And no, it won't be traveling down the road, it could be climbing a wall, or hugging a mana pipe. You drop down, hit your siphon, and get maybe 3 motes of mana.

So my plan, the only one I could come up with, was to land every so often, burn up all my mana, and hope that some horde wasn't sitting there with a big grin on his face.

And if you don't have mana? Eh, not sure there, maybe Blizz will fix this once they do the stats and wonder why no one is getting to the purple clouds.

I may be able to make my money back from the goggles this month, maybe.

I'll probably just stick them in the bank until more clouds become available.

Sembiance : Be sure to read the instructions that come with the googles. Wait let me read them for you.

Goggles + Netherstorm = Arcane Vortexes

crudman: It casts "Mod Invisibility Detection" Doesn't detect stealth. It's a modified detection for arcane vortiexes. You need https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=9242/ancient-tablet but if you are warlock you'll have that much more detection wait if you are a human warlock. Oh NO! even more detection.

Broken piece of crap! You have to equip it before you mount or you don't get the aura. Thus you can't use it with any equipment manager mods. Plus I use EZ dismount, so it was auto dismounting me as soon as I mounted. LOL!

What OTHER uses does this have aside from finding arcane vortexes in Netherstorm?
Are there any other mote clouds you can see with it, i.e. does it make any sense wearing this outside of Netherstorm?

Tested with a Warlock friend with a Succy out. It did NOT let me see the invisible creature.

It's honestly easier to find the clouds by falling into one as a mana-user. Use the built-in floating combat text, and hit your Zapthrottle Mote Extractor when you get spammed with +20 mana.

Off-topic, if you find these clouds as a paladin, pull all your mobs into them, it's like having a HUGE blessing of wisdom on all the time :P

Been flying around in zang and nether for hours just to find a single one.. no luck.

I confirm that equipping while mounted does not seem to give you the (invis) invis buff.

Big waste of time getting the stuff to create the items and searching the clouds.

you can see vortex at the same exact distance as with the goggles on. the goggles and detect invisibility do the same thing in this case.

you extract the mote with a channel type spell that lasts 3 seconds

When I fly over the clouds (I've only seen two), in netherstorm my head shoots sparks. I'm not sure if that's a new addition to the item to see the clouds easier or what, I'm a 377 skill engi too, maybe that has something to do with it.

weird stuff. in 2.1 when i got goggles equipped I got mana from an arcane vortex, but couldn't see any cloud. Also when I took goggles off I no longer gained mana from the vortex. So looks like the vortex functionality was changed?

I'm not quite sure that these are needed anymore. I've been able to see (very scarcely) the mote-gas things while wearing the second-sight helm. And I haven't seen any in a while while wearing these.

I just made around 25 of these. :D

These goggles are pretty useless, well kind of. I have engineering on my alt warrior and I already have both the "Furious Gizmatic"- and the "Tankatronic"-goggles so I don't really have any need for these.

But, these disenchant into a Large Prismatic Shard and I have enchanting on my main. So what I did was that I skilled engineering from 360 to 375 with these as skilling up by making Scopes, which btw. is a drop pattern, didn't really sound like a plan.

For the horde:

You can buy this schematic in Zabra'Jin from the captured gnome by the forge. Type /target captured to get him.

It's an easy way to get the higher level engineering practices out of the way although its not a very useful set of goggles.

As of patch 2.3, the goggles now show the locations of the gas clouds on the minimap, making it easier to locate them.

This still works with other forms of tracking and does not show up as a selection for tracking type.

I.e., you can track minerals or herbs and both they and the clouds will show up as yellow dots on your minimap.

im farming around manaforge for the khorium scope schematic, are there just no motes around here?

Used the goggles and mote extractor for the 1st time, in 2hrs, got 38 motes of water from Zanger and 18 motes of air, mostly from Nagarand, funny, had 1 indicated "wind", looked, and looked, finally looked straight up, there it was, but waaaay to hi to collect, wish collector worked airborne, did have a couple that were above those floating islands, landed on them, collected np.

These goggles does what it says it does, the gas clouds shows up on the mini map as red dots and it's helping me find them much easier than without the headpiece
