You guys for got about one thing - this sword looks awesome! It looks almost like a dim light saber. It dark and creepy enough for any lock.

I've got this sword at 67 ^_^, helping my friend at SP.
When it dropped, all party members said, that it's nise pally sword, but i (lock) need roolled it. So we had no pally in our group, so there were no stupid questions of "ninjaing" this sword.
And now i look pretty cool, kind of Luke Skywalker TT

Just to add, all enchant glows stack with the "lightsaber"-like animation. Just got mine on my lock, had some extra Fiery enchant mats on me so decided why not. And it turns out: Blue + Red = awesome :)

PALADINS -

If this sword drops in your Slave Pens run.. roll on it! It is first and foremost a Paladin weapon, and only secondly a caster weapon. Casters have a magnitude of options to choose from in the form of staves while questing. As someone said above, any decent caster will have Battle Mage's Baton at 65, as it is an amazing weapon for that level.

Paladins however have practically no options for good spell dps swords. This is the only worth-while one until level 70. Yes, that's right. Level 70 Crystalforged Sword is better, but in between now and then, there is honestly nothing good.

Even if you're not planning to go Prot, this weapon is good. Holy Paladins WILL want this for PvEing, as it will allow them to wear sword & board while dpsing with Righteousness and Concecrate. Ret pallies will want to roll for this too. You never know.

If one day you respec Prot to tank before 70, you will be kicking yourself for not rolling on this sword.

I conned guildies into helping me farm this sword for my prot pali. We 4 maned the boss with 70 prot warrior, 70 hunter, 64 prot pali (pretending to heal) and a 61 ret pali (also pretending to heal). It took us 1 attempt lol. Dropped first time.

Personally i see this as more of a pali sword then a caster sword. damage and healing? mages cant even heal themselves and locks heal their pets... this is totally a pali sword first.

I got this last night in Slave Pens, and I have to say it's much better than the Diamond Core Sledgemace (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24384) that I had before. Plus, if you're upset about the DPS, then buy an enchant. Maybe sharpen it or something. I enchanted it myself with Minor Striking (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/spell=7788) and it's great. Drops of 1st boss and has a fair drop rate. 1st boss in Slave Pens, not at all difficult to get. I highly recommend it. Level 63 Prot Pally.

I can confirm enchant glows stack with the blue glow on this. I have enchanted this with executioner and if i am lucky enough you will see a screenshot of it soon!

I already prepared materials for Sunfire just waiting for our guild enchanter to get online, then you will eventually see this with Sunfire.

I can confirm that. I got it tonight off Mennu the Betrayer in The Slave Pens - with a +30 spell enchant it will be better than my Blade of Vaulted Secrets.

Got this on my first run. BTW I'm a 62 prot pally and I'm loving this. Also the group I was in consisted of a 70 war, 70 hunter x2, a 68 lock and me, so basically I had full rights over this.

droped today on my 5th attempt to get it. i am now a jedi, we did this guy with a Feral druid tank(65), fury warrior(62), priest(66), and hunter(66). i being a 63 mage. asked group b4 i came and they didnt mind, ill put up a screenshot to. it looks like argent defender aka Lightsaber.

I just got this sword today, but I need a good offhand, and I don't wanna pvp or run UBRS, any ideas? Btw, the sword is awesome to tote around, it's my little blue lightsaber.

Sigh...I've lost on this weapon twice now to paladins, and its really ridiculous. The first one was a holy pally who already had the hammer that drops off the next boss of this instance (with +103 healing). He told me that he "needed a weapon for soloing". The next one was unknown spec'd, was dpsing during the fight...told me he wanted it for healing. This I can understand more than the first, but still there are WAY better healing weaps at this level, and I'm just tired of bull&*!@ noobs like this. Whatever.

LOLadins is right.

Now I'm planning on just running Underbog until I get the dagger from it (theres tons of other good cloth drops there so that should be better).

With the exception of having 8 more int, it's still behind a HWL spellblade. It's of course much cooler looking though. spellblade has +1 to crit where as this one has the decreased resistance.

Paladins can only use swords and maces (well, that have spelldamage on them, anyway). There are only three such weapons in outlands pre 70. This, diamond core sledgemace (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24384/diamond-core-sledgemace) and Sky Breaker (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27937/sky-breaker).

Prot-spec paladins need spellpower for threat, and there isn't a whole lot of armor with spellpower and defense. Not to mention that most of them are poorly itemized atm (as of 4/4/07)

Taking a good casting sword/mace and loading up on warrior-type tank gear is the only effective option at this point. There are tons of caster daggers as well as staves, if you choose to use one, neither of which paladins can use.

In short, get over your own importance. Any class that can use this should be allowed to roll on it. If a mage/lock gets one over me, good for them. Seriously, it's a game, it's not that important.

Got it on my Pally a couple of days ago. Pick up mage Betched and moaned about it for the next three hours, because he wanted it...even though his staff had better stats and more spell damage on it.

He concluded I didn't need it because I didn't need spell damage. Tanking/Grinding, spell damage is essential to paladins...not to mention it actually had a little more +healing than what I was using in my healing gear at the time.

they can also get this easy to get staff at level 61 if they're horde. It's so fricken easy to get. My priest has it. It's called Totemic Staff

Does anyone know what this looks like with enchants on it? Does it work the same as the Ardent Avenger? I'd like to get +Spellpower, but I'm worried about ruining the look.

I have a lvl 63 pally, should i take the time to get this sword? The spell dmg would be very nice along with the sta and int, but it doesn't do much melee dmg. So should i get it?

Some of the stupidity posted above is just amazing.

This is one of the best prot pally swords pre-70.

Just now I had to roll on it against a priest and a mage. Luckily I won it and the mage and priest both started #$%^&ing until I kindly reminded the priest that he couldn't even use swords, at which point the mage chimed in that human priests have the magical ability to use swords. I promptly removed both of them from the group and invited a rogue and a priest who were both friends of mine. Reset the instance and ran it again without a hitch.

Please try to have at least some understanding of a class/spec before you decide that they don't need something just because of your own greed. Spell damage and spell hit are both extremely nice for tanking as a paladin, especially since holy damage is where all of our aggro comes from. Luckily I don't have to worry about getting removed from any groups for rolling on items that actually benefit me because I start most of my groups, and if I'm not the one who started the group then it was a close friend of mine.

If you think adding an extra 50 damage to your frostbolt is more important than the tank getting a huge aggro boost (believe me, every little bit of spell damage helps a lot), then you seriously need to get your head checked.

This attitude is disgusting beyond words, especially since the majority of mages and warlocks I run with can't even out DPS me, the tank.

You can have priority over me on an item like this when you contribute more to the group than #$%^&ing about who rolls on what and when you can actually out DPS the tank.

i know how it is to be doing more damage than everyone else in the group, i normally do more damage than everyone, rogues, warriors, and feral druids included. i also know why this is. who would you think would do more damage a rogue doing 150 samage to one mob every second, a mage doing 600 damage to one mob every 3 seconds, or me doing 84 damage to 6 or 7 mobs every second while able to attack with a sword, and block with a shield (each block doing about 200 damage), so before you say that a person needs to do more damage than you to be able to roll on an item, think about why you do so much damage and how little damage you would do against one target

About the pally thing..

It's good for protection pallies, like really good..
If the prot pally in your group is someone you're instancing with a lot, you might even want to consider passing this to him.
If the prot pally doesn't have a spell damage weapon and then gets this his aggro will be much much better.

I can also see why a holy paladin would want it, holy paladins have to use spell damage to do any damage. (SoR, JoR, Holy Shock, Consecrate)
Although that's not their primary role while running that instance. Also since 2.3, +healing on items also gives a decent amount of spell damage.
So i guess holy paladins shouldn't roll need on this.

Ret paladins should use slow 2-handers.

I just got this sword my first run into slave pens at lvl 64. Nobody else wanted it so i took it since im a lock and im allience so i cant get totemic.

now im getting a ton of comments on where did i get it and what not. after seeing the drop chance i guess i know why. giving this thing spell power or int would make it last a while unless the nagrand staff is much better. somebody link it plz.

People. Class and talent specs don't matter at all. There is no "variable degree of need." Ever. The "I NEED IT!" is very simple, and requires precisely ZERO discussion:

If you NEED an item (need being, you CAN and WILL use it and it IS an UPGRADE for you) ... then you NEED it.

Period.

I first got this sword for my mage, later for my tankadin. I really like its skin and can remember the time I used it with my mage thinking "such a pity I don't actually slam the monsters with this beauty".

To be honest, I don't care so much about pre-70 stuff and I usually leave things to people who have desire for them. But I must admit in this case I asked my mage guildmate if he would leave it to me : I just LOVE to bash mobs with a lightsaber ^^.

Ok. Here's how it is.
I haven't played a paladin. I do know how important spell damage and spell hit rating are to tankadins. Mages and warlocks can get the Totemic staff(https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=25494/totemic-staff), which far outstrips this weapon+ any offhand you can find at this level. It might not have hit rating but the boost in damage and stats leaves this sword in the dust. This dropped twice for me, and I gladly passed it off to the prot paladin that was tanking for us both times (they were different paladins.) I remember seeing this for the first time and getting all psyched up to get it for my mage, but there's no point. Totemic Staff is better, and the staff you can get from Nagrand (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=25760/battle-mages-baton) practically smashes this sword to a pulp.

If mages and warlocks are still sour about not getting this weapon, or simply like weapon+offhand better, Zangartooth Marshblade (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24453/zangartooth-shortblade) is better than the Spellfire Longsword in every way, save for 2 stamina. Chances are that if you gave this sword to your pally tank, that stamina would be wasted on you anyway, because you might not be able to pull aggro anymore.

Yes, the totemic staff is ABSOLUTELY better than this statwise unless you have an off hand between "very good" and "good".

If you have a prot pally in your group let them need it. While running slave pens I was also running with a good prot pally for the first time, and I was absolutely amazed at their ability to hold agro. Make friends with prot pallies and give them this sword, you'll never need another tank buddy again.

(P.s. the prot pally I ran with actually rolled greed on this and let me have it and they later got the 2h Mace from Underbog cuz they could solo more effectively with it. She had enough spell damage to hold agro from anyone anyways, so she was really nice about it. )

But yeah, despite me just happening to get it, GIVE IT TO PROT PALLIES AND NEVER GET AGRO AGAIN (to all you casters).

(P.s.s. my offhand+Sword combo gives me 3 more int, 1 less stam, and 10 less spell damage. I know, I went for looks over stats, but can you blame me? This+Laughing Skull Orb=pwnage)

Protection paladins use spell damage. Have a look at the next 70 protadin you see...
Anyway, there are very few options for prot paladin weapons around and so many options for mages and warlocks (mainly staves and daggers).

It dropped of the first boss in Slave pens on my second run :). It's a great tankadin sword because of all the spell damage.
