Previously this had a 2% chance on successful spellcast to restore 300 mana, so an average of 6 mana restored per spell. Since 2.3 it has a 5% chance to restore 300 mana, meaning an average of 15 mana restored per spell.

Note that this means that all theorycrafting posted before the 2.3 patch is no longer accurate.

To 'borrow' from below - but with up to date numbers - that means:

Spell cast every 5 seconds -> 12 casts/minute -> 180 mana/minute -> 15 mp5
Spell cast every 3 seconds -> 20 casts/minute -> 300 mana/minute -> 25 mp5
Spell cast every 2 seconds -> 30 casts/minute -> 450 mana/minute -> 37,5 mp5
Spell cast every 1.5 seconds -> 40 casts/minute -> 600 mana/minute -> 50 mp5

This means that for any healer, this gem is almost stupidly superior to all other meta gems.

As a warlock using the tier 5 set, by my calculations, you'll need at least 3 of the 4 yellow slots to be void gems which add +4 magic resistance all types, which will kind of gimp you...

The highest stats to prismatic combination I can find is:

1 prismatic
2 purple
2 green
2 orange

This requires the pvp bracers, which will gimp healing by a minor amount, at least for Paladins.

edit: "minor" is, of course, tongue-in-cheek. There's a particularly massive difference between the pvp bracers and Bracers of Justice; namely 24 healing, 9 int and 2 spell crit.

As a priest durring almost every encounter i use 3 spells, renew, prayer of mending, and the occasional power word sheild, and this proc would grant me approx 75% of the spells cost back in mana.

The proc shows up on both the Combat Log and the Blizzard SCT, "You gain 300 mana from Mana Restore", and on SCT if you enable the "Energy Gains" option.

Judging by numbers posted by apparentbliss' above, a Priest using a mixture of Renews/Prayer of Mending and Greater Heal will gain somewhere between 10 and 15 mp5 from this gem (taking into account lag, delays etc).

So for a healer (or Priest as Keggy has asked) it comes down to whether you value 26healing or 12mp5 more. The threat reduction from the healing meta is also very minimal as healers really shouldn't be having threat issues assuming you put some points in silent resolve.

It's also worth noting that this meta is far easier to 'activate' than the mentioned healing meta. Most holy Priests use a mixture of Royal Nightseyes and Dazzling Talasites (of course some choose to go for the higher +healing but I personally value 9healing 2mp5 more than 18healing). Blue gems (in the form of purple/green) are far better for holy priests than any other available gem and having to sacrifice so many blue gems to activate the healing meta just doesn't seem worth it.

This gem, on the other hand, is really easy to activate and in most cases I'm sure nobody will have to make a change to their gear in order to get it working.

Onto my final point :p. This gem also has 12int, as well as the mp5 mentioned above. Your average raid boss encounter takes somewhere between 8 and 10mins (with the exception of earlier ones). In an 8 minute fight, 12 int will average out to another 1.875mp5. So this also needs to be considered when choosing a meta that best suits you.

So, in my opinion, this gem is far better than the healing meta available. Not only do you not have to sacrifice stats elsewhere to activate it (getting rid of Royal Nightseyes etc, which you'd find yourself having to do if trying to activate the healing gem), but it is also going to provide somewhere between 10 and 15mp5 depending on your play style. And I personally think 10+mp5 is far more useful than 26healing in raid encounters.

Final note- 26healing is far easier to get elsewhere than 10mp5 (in the form of gems). Not sure if thats useful in the discussion but I felt it was worth noting to show people the value of mp5 compared to healing.

Balance druids get mana restored on a melee attack when in moonkin form, and it procs for me about every other hit. If I switch weapons and use my feral staff to melee, I get back 250 mana. So if I can go from no mana to half in a few swings, then this gem is entirely uselss. Plus, the more attack power a feral staff has, the more mana we get back. So moonkins, don't waste your time with this gem, just carry around a staff with a bunch of attack power.

I would just like to say, This Meta gem is well worth it, I play on a fairly new rp server, as a Prot pally, and yes I know this gem is not the greatest for a tank, but I am main tank for one of the Higher End Raiding guilds, Ive found that the proc is very useful, It procs off of all seals and Judgements, so if you figuer that you use a seal and a judgement every 8 seconds, plus spamming concecration and holy shield every 8 seconds, you get a pretty good prot rate, I normally have this proc 6-7 times ever boss fight, on average of 4-5 minutes (Attunemen, Moroes, and Maiden) Just like to say, I love this meta gem, the proc is great and the 12 int doesnt hurt a thing either.

Okay, it looks to me like this procs on essentially everything, but does it proc on equip procs, such as Darkmoon Card: Wrath, https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=31857 I'm tempted to get this gem for my hunter (he has incredibly low crit, which is why I roll with the card), but if it cannot proc on the cards trigger, I think I will stay with 3% increased crit damage.

Mp5 is a wrong way to view the effect of this meta gem because it means you'll have to cast without stopping.I'd rather view this as a % restored per proc which is pretty easy to calculate although still not accurate for classes that use multiple spells.A mage on the other hand that is only using 1-2 spells for the whole battle can calculate how much mana will this bring you back per cast.An example is arcane concentration where you have a 10% chance per spell to get a free spell = 10% of your mana back at the end of the battle.Similiar to master of elements which at about 30ish % is 10% of your mana back.

No one can really deny how worthwhile mp5 is but honestly, I'm at the point in raiding where stealing 5 seconds ticks is almost always A LOT more worth it than stacking mp5 on my slots. Stacking all reds and an orange with the meta comes out to a huge difference when you consider 12-14 gem slots.

That being said I stack spirit and red gems, and with the two piece t5 bonus and occasional stolen 5 second rule ticks running out of mana for me.. is rare. I still have somewhere around 120mp5... so in those rare cases where you have to do the infamous patchwerk healing (no longer that often, especially for priests) then yes, mp5 will treat you better. I just think its nowhere near as useful as it once was. Primary stat? Sure, but not the end all.

Does this gem have any sort of internal/hidden cooldown? And can it proc off multi-target spells such as chain heal, circle of healing, or aoe spells?

Edit: Rephrase the second question. Can it multi-proc off a multi-target spell or only on initial cast?

The Gem will proc off anything.One day i was doing some my tailor spellfire set.And it procced when i was doing the Chest ;p.And it doesn't have an internal CD once i had it proc for me 2x times in a row.

Could anyone tell me if this might proc off arcane missiles OTHER than the initial cast? I know it says "spellcast" but sometimes blizzard screws up, and I'd like some proof either way before I decide to get this.

*Edit* Alright, my last gem was awful so I tried this. it can only proc off the initial cast of arcane missiles.

I have noticed that Insightful Earthstorm diamond procs a lot more often in 2.3 than in 2.2. Hence I suspect it has been stealth buffed. It might have been buffed to 5%.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this item works with hunter's shots? I just logged a full arathi basin and the log shows only one proc and it was off of a trueshot aura cast.

Edit: After further testing I can confirm that this in fact does not proc off of steady shot or multi shot. It seems that it has to be a magical effect such as arcane shot.

as a druid, this meta gem is worth up to 25mp5
i rly dunno if it has a flat proc chance or ppm chance, but in fights like illidan and council where i use almost every gcd, this gem is rly worth 25mp5.

today, council and illidan, it proced every minute and restores 300 mana.

300 mana per minute = 5mp1 = 25mp5

ok, I am a holy paladin looking for my pre-raiding gear/ arena gear.

when i heal, i primarily spam Flash of Light (for about 150 mana) this return factor seems INCREDIBLY beneficial to me, considering i am constantly casting short spells (1.5 sec for FoL)

however, does this interfere with the talent Illumination (the one where you gain 60% mana back with a crit) ?

or could i have both the benefit of illumination AND the +300 mana?

After 500 spellcasts and 18 procs, I can tell you that the procrate is between 2% and 5% with 95% accuracy, centered around 3.6%. In other words, you'd need way more spellcasts to determine it's actual procrate. Too bad you can't do it in Excel.

The best thing with this gem is that it loves you when you need some love and sit idle when you don't and that's just about perfect for a priest juggling the 5SR. When your targets are under heavy pressure and you have to spam those flash heals against your will this gem gives you progressively more mana in return the more you have to cast. Knowing what a waste of mana it can be to have to spam fast heals instead of those effective BIG Greater Heals we love to slam onto you this gem is a treat. When the going gets tough the Insightful gets going <3

*edit* As of the patch on 5/22/07, this only requires two of each gem color, making it really easy to get. :)

This thing fires off of everything. All heal spells, buffs, damage spells, every heal in a nova or a Prayer of Healing, rezzing, etc. I was making Netherweave bolts and it fired. Cute! I really like it so far.

69 casts before proccing
80 casts before proccing
37 casts before proccing
12 casts before proccing
65 casts before proccing
152 casts before proccing
6 casts before proccing
20 casts before proccing

1 proc every ~55 casts = ~2% procrate... yep

I used this for a while on my mage then went mystical skyfire, got to say for raiding I like this gem it makes a difference on not running out of mana especially in 25 man raides.

5 yellow, 5 red, 5 blue gems. Too much equipment you'd be forced to wear which you otherwise wouldn't. Shame because for a Healer this is the best meta socket out there.

the last instance i went to i healed over 1,000,000 hp through the run, on average around 3000hp per heal ( a couple of hp more than my normal flash heal ) thats 333 straight casts. i know its not exact but that means 2000 returned mana per instance.. which isnt bad

however its the 12 int that makes this especially sweet, although youll be needing something like

before you get rid of your halo of transcedance with the zg enchant..

I am running this in my Hunter 2piece T5 2piece T6 Set for lots of mana gain, since it gives Int, but Hunter does have an ability in the dps rotation that can procc this - Kill Command. Just found it out. Makes this gem usable for very long farm sessions since I don't need to drink.
