This is one of the two types of tokens that can be obtained in Nagrand (the other one being the "Halaa Battle Token" https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=26045). You can get a Research Token by turning in 20 units of "Oshu'gun Crystal Powder" (obtained as a random drop from the mobs in Nagrand) to the researcher in Halaa.

The tokens can be traded in at the quartermasters in Halaa while the city is under the control of your faction, and reward you with rare quality armor for the leg and waist slots, an 18 slot bag, or an epic gem.

These take so long to grind, it's unfair.
I leveled up in Nagrand and pretty much every quest available, killing mobs all over. I even did the Kurenai grind to exalted. Add to this all the mote/primal i've done in Nagrand as well.

After all this time i've got 10 tokens plus another 4 i spent on the PvP legs and belt. Thats 14 tokens from hundreds of hours spent killing mobs in the zone.

If i knew how hard these things were to get when leveling i wouldn't have wasted 4 on the blue pvp rewards. I'm currently aiming for the Dark War Talbuk, yet i've had the PvP tokens sat in the bank for ages.

So for advice, if you want a talbuk, it's quicker to grind to exalted and buy them. Most people can't tell the difference anyway...

It really does take a lot of grinding to get the Dark War Talbuk. At an average drop rate for the Crystal Powder of even 8% you'll get a stack of 20 after killing roughly 250 mobs. To reach the 20 you'll need that means you'll have to have killed 5,000 mobs that each have an 8% drop rate for the Crystal Powder.

At a crazy fast rate of 5 mobs per minute, that'll take you more than 16 hours of solid grinding!

u get them from turning in dust that u find on mobs in nagrand to a vendor in halaa.

But can u get them any other way?

Ive just completely leveled from 67 to 68 on my mage through grinding for these... and i still have 5 more to go before i get my war goat. I strongly suggest farming these before you hit 70, because the xp gain is crazy, and its going to be a long grind either way. Plus, unlike quests, you wont get any extra gold for grinding these at 70, it will be the same grind. I havent found any specific mobs dropping the dust more than others, I just roamed around Nagrind killing pretty much anything.

Hope this helps, good luck if you plan on farming 15 or 20 of these.

They are used to buy things from Halaa reward vendor in Nagrand. No rep needed, u can get cool mounts from there but u will also need Halaa battle tokens then.

if you're lazy doing gold earning or sort, just quest in nagrand and farm these powders. These are rather not too low drop rate :) but i guess you might be able to earning enogh gold most of the time! Well... unless you're a poor ass like me who often craft free jewel... xD

Anyway, it's an awesome mount besides my dear armored elekk. ><

how am i supposed to get 400 of the oshu'gun dust for my pvp mount?

20 research tokens needed (20 * 20 = 400) the dust has a droprate of appx 20%
so i would have to kill about 2000 mobs for a PVP mount....i mean its still a PVP! mount.

Halaa Research Tokens are earned from a repeatable quest in Halaa. This quest involves turning in stacks of 20 Oshu'gun Crystal Powder Sample, a zonewide drop from mobs. The turnin is available at level 64.

Turn in crystal powder to Chief Researcher Katros. He accepts them in increments of 20. The quest reward is a Research Token.

It's true there's a ton of gear in Outland and if you run instances, you're likely to get stuff better than this. But it is mostly level 66 and it is PvP oriented gear. The belt was better than what I had at the time and I got 20 some odd tokens in less than an hour.

Halaa PvP is a lot of fun, on my server there's always people at Halaa and it changes hands quite a bit. Level 65-70 all get in on it.

I think Blizzard gets it just fine, if it doesn't appeal to you then that's fine but a lot of people enjoy it.

i think halaa is a great idea and i've participated in both defending and attacking it. i've since moved on to bigger and better things.

by no stretch am i going to outfit my character with the items i get from halaa unless it is a temporary upgrade.

but i think that it is great that it is there. for players who are casual players, or players waiting for an instance group to form, or for whatever other reason, it is there. blizzard has something for everyone.

it amazes me that so many people get upset at blizzard for A, B, or C or get upset with a player class because of X, Y, or Z.

if a person who pays to play this game wants to take a level 70 and gank lower level characters then so be it. if you don't like it, then blizzard has provided PVE servers.

if a specific class is kicking your tail, then maybe you should learn to avoid confrontations with that class. or play on a PVE server.

if a person pays money to play and rolls and wins on an item, then so be it. deal with it with some dignity or therapy or whatever.

if they want to hang out in halaa or the eastern plaguelands, what difference does it make to you?

Turn in your Oshu'gun Crystal Powder Sample to Chief Researcher Amereldine in Halaa when the town is friendly. You will receive 1 Halaa Research Token per 20 Oshu'gun crystals you turn in.

I've farmed pretty much all over Nagrand and unlike some of the previous posters I will have to disagree with Sunstrider Post being the best place to farm these. My best drop rates so far have been ogres in Northwind Cleft and Laughing Skull ruins. I have not collected the statistics to back me up, I will try and post some later on. The ogres in addition drop the beads you need to turn in for Kurenai rep, and also green items, pots, and netherweave cloth. To me this is a great combination and apart from the sheer boredom of it I have been grinding these ogres continuously since I first hit Nagrand at lvl 64.

On the drop rate - its pretty bad. In 2 levels of grinding I have only collected 97 powders. I need 300 of these for my PvP mount so I've got a LONG way to go.

Though I believe my observations to be correct, it would be nice if they are wrong and there is someway to grind these out faster. Post your drop rates here and lets compare :)

Unfortunately there is no easy way of obtaining Research Tokens. You simply have to grind away for days in and around Nagrand.

I myself have found that the ogres definitely drop the most and like the person stated above, they drop other tasty little rewards such as Netherweave Cloth, Green Armor Items and not bad Silver (around 10 to 20 each kill).

However it does take a very very long time to collect enough to exchange for Research Tokens. I was finding I was only getting one powder per 10 to 15 kills, so its a long old ride.

I am a 70 prot warrior and I am working on getting my dark war talbuk. The battle tokens were easy enough to get and for anyone interested in farming powder for these tokens I highly recommend the ogres at northwind cleft. I find them slightly easier to kill than the ones in other places and the drop rates are awesome. I think it took me only about an hour or so to get 1 token.

Ive been farming in Oshugun in Nagrand for three hours now making laps killing the Voidspawn there. The drop rate isnt that great but they drop more Netherweave cloth than can fit in your inventory, and also motes of shadow are a pretty good drop as well. Sometimes 2ea
Ive made around 6-7 stacks of Netherweave cloth, 2 research tokens worth, 6 primal shadows worth, and 4-5 greens, 1 blue, and 8-9 greys in this 3 hours. Good place if your not in a big hurry to get those research tokens

There is an 18 Slot Bag for 8 Research Tokens from the Halaa QuarterMaster in Halaa, Nagrand. Other than that I wouldn't bother.

To bad it's not either Battle tokens or Research tokens.

The gear isn't Much as many have Said before me but the main reason I AM doing Halaa is for the Fun, And well That Dark War Talbuk Is Sweet in my opinion, lol. :)

the drops for the oshu'gun is around 5%

you need 20 research token for the Halaa epic mount.

now thats about... 400 oshu'gun powder.

400 oshu'gun / 5% drop = 8000 mobs!

assuming all you do is kill all ogres.

8000 ogres * 10 Mag'har repu (per kill) = 80,000 reputation mag'har
plus the %15 warbeads drop thats an estimated 1200 warbeads.
1200/10(per turn-in in Consortium) = 120 *250repu = 30,000 Consortium reputation
or Mag'har (500 per turn in)

Should be enough for you to buy the Maghar Exalted mount and Halaa Epic mount.

In Summary
IF all you do is kill Ogre to get Oshu-gun
Estimated for 1Research token

400 mobs needed
equals
4000 Maghar-Reputation
60 Warbeads = 1500 Consortium repu or 3000 Mag'har Reputation

I have about 40 tokens and don't know what to do with 'em. I'm still mystified. Do I have to get involved in PVP before I can use them, or can I use them as they are? I don't find them difficult to get, everything around Nagrand drops them along with a lot of nice stuff. Nagrand is a grinder's paradise, millions of motes, netherweave, skins and greens. Talking of skins, why so few drops of Clefthoof skins? If you are a leatherworker, you can get most of the ingredients for level 360ish, fairly easily but you get held up by the lack of C/hoof. Any one got any ideas?
