These are used for the quest to get into the Ethereum Prison, "Ethereum Secrets" and the quest before it. For Ethereum Secrets, you need to get an Ethereum Prisoner I.D. Tag. You need to get a key, and take it to the prisons, unlock it, kill the spawned mob, and loot the tag. The prisons are in the Ethereum Staging Grounds, they are pink bubbles.

I was farming around 66, 47 in netherstorm for prison key. Drop rate very low. But I found a special npc that I believe have highest drop rate among all Etherum mob. Name of the mob is: Etherum Jailor. LVL 71 non elite. Similar to avenger but have red glow all over body. He hit very hard. I clean that area for so many times only seen him once. And it drop Etherum prison key for me. I believe is 100% drop rate from this mob but since I only kill him once. So I might be wrong.

You dont get I.D. Tags every time, sometimes when you unlock the prison you get a consortium dealer or similar friendly npc, they wont give you their dog tags but they will give you 500 rep for rescuing them, it is possible to get rep for consortium, lower city, and other shattrath factions i think

also you dont have to farm just the guys at the staging grounds, any ethereum guys like the ones at manaforge ultris drop them too

Got 3~4 prison key in mana tomb today. I'm the only one can loot. I think other group member reputation not enough or haven't done pre quest.

Also I can confirm those Zaxxis at south of area 52 drop prison key as well. Drop 2 for me while farming rep there. Drop rate similar to Etherum mob.

The 2 optimal choices for farming these are the Zaxxis mobs if you still need rep

OR

The mobs at Bash'irs Landing. These drop Prison Keys as well as Apexis shards for the Ogri'la quests =)

The drop rate on keys from the mobs on Bash'irs landing seem to be a bit higher for me atm compared to the netherstorm mobs.

Spelltheives however have a dirty amount of magic resist and cast a non purgeable -20% magic reduction buff on themselves

I've used the key to open up Ethereum Prison four times now. The first three yielded a mob to fight. The fourth yielded a friendly "Rescued Sha'tar Vindicator". She said, "Blessed Light! Free of my confines at last... Thank You, hero. A'dal will be told of your heroics."

I got a 500 point bump in Rep with The Sha'tar.

Then she disapppered. No I.D. tag or loot since she was friendly.

As a note, you HAVE to have done the quest for the salvaged key to get this one to drop. I started this on my mage (gotten the salvaged key), then decided to use my shaman to collect the keys (As my shaman has an epic flyer), however when I fought I Jailor I did not get one. After quickly doing the salvaged key quest, however, I started getting these keys on my shaman.

Drop rates that I've found.

100% = Ethereum Jailor
3% = Zaxxis Raider
3% = Zaxxis Stalker

These keys are NOT BoP so they can be sold in the auction house. The prisons contain a number of things. Often its an aggresive mob that you can kill for a prison ID, but they can contain friendly npcs that give you rep with one of a few different factions.

These can drop of ANY lv 68+ Ethereum mobs, The jailors are an uncommen spawn but have an 100% droprate.

I have find my first of an Ethereum Avanger.

The best way to find these keys are to kill the lv 68-70 mobs around Mana Forge Ultris on the Voidwind Platueas

These keys are for a chain quest line...

first u need to find 1 key and open a prison to get a ID card
next u need to find 5 keys to turn them into the quest guy, he gives u a item to summon a quest mob in BEM.
After u complete that, u must now get 5 more keys to summon a 5 man boss that has a chance to drop a mark that u need to complete the quest.
then u have to goto heroic mana tombs and open a cage that is right past the first boss, then return to BEM.
now you have to find 5 more keys and try to get another mark to summon a Boss in heroic mana tombs after the last boss.

I killed about 800 Zaxxis ethereals south of Area 52 and ended up with 18 keys.

The droprate seems to have been increased somewhat in the latest maintenance patch - I have heard several people comment on it, and I myself found six keys in the time it took to grind 42 Insignias down at The Heap. It might just be coincidental, or it might just be in that particular area, but I thought it worth mentioning.

To my disappointment, I rescued a Sporeling and got 500 rep with Sporeggar. Big time whammy for me. On the up side I did rescue someone from the Cenarion Expedition which was great :)

These give great loot. Of the 4 I've done so far, I got a top level BoE green, a BoP Blue Fire Resist Cape, and a BoE Blue, and one of the extra 500 rep friendlies. Here's hoping this loot continues.

It might be obvious from looking at the drop rates but don't waste your time farming for keys in the main etherium base, they have a horrific 0.5% drop rate compared with around 3% in blades edge where you can use the cheap flasks made with apeixs shards and have a chance at getting depleted items as well.

Those are not having good drop rate on my server at least. Has farmed at bashir landing outside the manaforge and at the camp for 3 days now some hours/day and got not a single key so far :(

So far I've had very good luck in Bash'irs landing, gotten at least 8 keys there in a very short time period(for getting these keys at least).

In heroic Mana-Tombs I got 3 keys, and I had gotten these only up to the second boss, drop rates seems good in heroic Mana tombs

So just went up to the prisons with 12 keys on me. Decided to try them all =) Well after the first two mobs came and have been killed, the next prison i opened i got a Rescued Keepers of Time Custodian that spawned and got 550rep with Keepers of time. In the next prison a Rescured Lower City Brute Spawned and i got 550 rep with Lower City. I tried them all and got on from cenerarion expedition to and one more from lower city. So seems like u can get one from every of the new factions =) And ofc got the id tags for turning in with consortium. I dont know if this is something that only will come when ur revered with consortium. But never gotten them when i was just honored with them and opened the prisons.

Edit... When a rescued custodian spawn u will not get an id tag! But rep with some faction in stead

This was weird. While I had Ethereum Prisoner I.D. Catalogue https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=10972 in my Quest Log, in 1 hour I got 51 Insignia's and 6 keys from killing Zaxxis NPCs. But after I completed the quest by opening the prisons and completed the quest, I went back to farm more Keys, and after 1+ hour of farming and getting 70 Insignia's, I ended up with 0 keys. Now I wish I hadn't completed the I.D. quest.

Can someone else check this out? The Key drop rate seems to be high when you have the I.D. Catalogue quest in your log.

Warden Icoshock actually has a pretty decent drop rate of keys. You wouldn't know by the WoWhead metrics (as he was in the game long before keys) but the droprate, while it is not be 100%, is really decent. Dropped about 5 keys out of the 10 times I've killed him in passing. Maybe I'm just lucky.

One dropped for me in Heroic Mana Tombs.
I was on the quest A Thousand Worlds at the time, and no one else in the party was on either of the quests involving the keys, so they didn't get to roll. Not sure if they drop in non-heroic.

The best ways to get these is from the daily (non heroic) quests where you will get 1, and you can do heroic Mana Tombs. In heroic MT there will (in most runs) drop between 3-5 witch means you have a great chance of getting atleast 1.

When you are so lucky to get em you can use em for the quest where you deliver 5 and then get another quest. If you do the whole chain you will end up with a permanent Yor (a "bonus" boss in heroic MT, who drops some nice rings) key.

You can also use em at the prisons in Netherstorm. They are just west of Manaforge Ultris. You can see the camp on the map (mushroom looking things.
There are 5-7 prisons and you just step up to them and use you key.
Now either it will spawn a mob who can drop some pretty desent things (blue rings and good greens) or a faction guy will spawn and give you 500 rep with his faction.
There are the following factions:
*Cenarion Expedition
*Consortium
*Keepers of Time
*Lower City
*The Sha'tar
*Sporeggar

The mobs who can spawn will drop a Ethereum Prisoner I.D. Tag witch you can deliver at the camp north of where you are and get 250 Consortium rep.

Does anybody know if you are already exalted with a faction if that faction's prisoner can still spawn on you inside a prison, thus wasting the key completely since you are already exalted?

These are BoP so send them to an alt that needs rep with consortium. I send them to my priest healer where I can't grind with and is also a disser, and the dropchance of blue items is pretty high, I had about 6 blue drops from 25 keys.

I'm trying to decide what the best use of these keys are for the final jump to exalted Consortium. Individually they are worth 250 rep with Consortium, unless you're unlucky and get an Outland rep NPC (which seems very rare. I think I've only seen one Sha'tar Vindicator in the dozens of keys I've used, and none of the others).

My issue is that you need 5 of these keys to get an Ethereum Stasis Chamber Key (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29750). The turn in to get the chamber key rewards you 500 rep, but I'm not certain that mobs you kill from the stasis chambers give any consortium rep. Can anyone confirm whether they do or not? Additionally, if you do get a Mark of the Nexus king from the Stasis Chamber mob, does summoning and killing Yor provide any reputation to Consortium?

Heroic Mana Tombs is potentially a great way to get these keys. I was the only one in my group who had the Consortium rep to even see the keys, so I walked out with 8 of them, plus the rep I earned from the instance itself. Very nice for someone working on Consortium rep.

Just tested this, we were 5 Guildies who did the quest, went to use the keys together.

First was a Cenarion Expedition prisoner, we were all near and he did an AoE animation and all got hit for +500 CE rep.

This happened 3 times out of 5, with different factions. The 2 times it didnt spawn a prisoner, was a mob that dropped green. Gave it to the keyholder.

After killing 100 mobs of the Zaxxis variety around 'The Heap' in Netherstorm, didn't rush took me about an hour.

I ended up with :

Have been grinding rep for consortium for ~1week now and close to exalted. This a.m. I spent a little over an hour at "the heap" north side closest to area 52 and got 8 of these things very quickly. usually takes forever. mainly got them from the zaxxis raider pats. not sure why, but who is agruging with success.

The prisons are located in the staging grounds (west of manaforge ultris in Netherstorm) - They are pink and circular shaped. They are easy to spot when coming from above.
Once you unlock the prison you will face a mob who will usually drop a green or blue item and a Ethereum Prisoner ID tag. This tag you bring to Commander Ameer who is just north of the staging grounds.
You will receive 250 consortium rep for this repeatable quest.
ohh, also worth mentioning.. sometimes when opening a prison you will free a prisoner. This will give you 500 rep for one of these factions: Consortium, Cenarion Expedition, Lower City, Keepers of Time, Sporeggar, The Sha'tar

okay, so about 8 hours of farming in blade edge mnts I had accumulated a total of 25 prison keys.

I decided to bring along some guild mates along for the ride when I opened the stasis chambers in Netherstorm so that they could share in the possible reputation gains, as well as roll on the blue drops.

Interesting in the short 2 or 3 short minutes it took to fight our way from the friendlies north of the staging grounds, to the stasis chambers we had another 5 keys drop. This isn't the first time i've noticed this and I'm starting to suspect that in a group the drop rate of the prison keys is greatly increased. This may be intentional, it may be a bug, never the less its a fact.

so we unlocked 30 prisons. We received 5 blue drops, 20 green drops, and in 5 cases we received +500 rep (2 towrads cenarion, 3 towards keepers of time)

it was like fishing in a barrel. We were so impressed we plan to do this again. Only next time we'll hunt for keys in a group. This is faster and easier rep than running instances.

I've gotten one of of the 2 groups of Ethereals at the end of The Arcatraz; because it's a green item it was also rolled for, which I won luckily. The second key I've found was randomly off an Archon near the prisons in Netherstorm. I'd guess the stronger the ethereal, the more likely you get the random drop.

There's no reason why anyone would farm these. The mobs that the keys spawn only give Consortium rep about 1/4 of the time. The rest of the time, you get a mob that gives no rep, Cenarian Expedition rep, or even Sporeggar rep.

I got 4 of these out of about 200 kills while farming Zaxxis Insignias at The Heap, for Consortium rep. None of the mobs they spawned gave Consortium rep, and only one dropped anything rare: the Sporeggar elite, which dropped a craptacular BoP shadow resist cloak that I vended. Also, only 2 of the 4 dropped I.D. tags, so I was only able to get 500 total Consortium rep for the quest turn-ins.

So if you're farming Consortium rep, head to The Heap south of Area 52 and farm insignias. If you get a key, great: auction it off and keep the gold (25-50g on Bronzebeard atm), but don't set out to farm the damn things!

The droprate seemes to be very low for some and very high for others. I looted 5 keys and didn't kill that much. But my brother killed mobs there (at blade edge's plateu) for about an hour without getting any key at all.
And, also when I opened the prisons two(!) of them dropped a blue item for me. Cloth feet with healing, stam and int and a ring with Spell dmg and healing and stam and shadow ress. I'm a mage so the boots got sold to vendor (BoP) and I saved the ring for the shadow ress and they were also BoP.

Finally got one today. Killed around 20 of the guys on the same island as the prisons, then went to farming Zaxxis.

52 insignias (at least 100 kills) later, a key finally dropped off a Zaxxis Stalker.

Three kills later, a second key dropped off a Zaxxis Raider.

Two kills later, a third key dropped off a Zaxxis Raider.

I farmed the ethereals south of area 52 at The Heap mainly to get consortium rep. I farmed over 10 of these keys there in a relatively quick time because they are all melee mobs with low life.

As a side note, turning in 5 keys to get a prison cell key in blades edge nets you 500 consortium rep per turn in. If you're farming those cells give all the keys to someone farming the rep! :)

Because you'll get Zaxxis Insignia as well as the occasional key, if you're going for rep. I got 40 insignias and 3 keys in an hour and a half, that's 1750 rep, from the cages I got 2 greens and a bop blue.

wow all you guys complaining must have really bad luck.

i farmed bashir landing in the fly to only area of Blades Edge mnts, and got 15 prison keys in 3 hours.

This is an excellent source of consortium rep. I think on average I don't get a prison tag about 20 - 25% of the time.

I noticed far better luck farming at night when player pop is low, but thats always the case with anything.

also a good source of large prismatic shards if you can disenchant.

I keep seeing these drop in mana tombs and everyone else can roll on them except me. not only that I've been farming the etherium in netherstorm for days and I havent seen a single one drop. is there anything that I could have done to prevent me from looting these?

I have got two keys so far and both from Ethereum Jailor (lvl 71, about 13k hp). 100% drop rate so far, found one at 57,50.

Best is by the heap. Even though drop is 5%, you can kill 4 times as many without healing. And they are lvl 66-68 and not 70 in the other area. Plus you get the Zaxxis Insignias.

Used on Prison and Gul'bor (The Den Mother) pops out. Level 71, non-elite. Very easy to kill. She drops the ID Tags and sometimes a blue BoP item.

I've killed 4 mobs so far & got two keys (one off a shocktrooper, one off an overlord).

Not a good sample set, but the droprate seems to be good.

Addendum: OK, I haven't got a third in about 15 kills now. Other people on my server are complaining that they've killed 50-60 without a drop. I may have just been lucky.

Considering this chain results in a repeatable quest that you'll need a key to do (Ethereum Prisoner I.D. Catalogue - haven't done it & it's not listed on here yet, but it's a blue ? quest), I'd have to assume the key's a regular random drop rather than one specific to any quest. Hence dropping & retaking the quest may not work well, but it's probably worth a shot if you're up to 50 kills with no drop.

over 150 mobs, 1 key off the probably 25th or so... killed every mob around the edges of the island the staging grounds are on twice plus extra grinding where the insignias drop. ill probably end up with 250 or so insignias first to get exalted with consortium before i get 5 keys for the quest.

Since the patch went live I've noticed that you can get it from any of the ethereum guys around manaforge ultris and seems to be about 1 drop in 50ish kills.

I've gotten 5 so far. 1 for the first quest, next 3 trying to get the id tag and instead getting rep (twice lower city, once shat) and 5th finally spawned guy to kill for id tag.

Alright so after spending 5 hours doing this and turning in about 9 id tags I went and did some research and found that until you are revered with the consortium, all that these keys and id tags will do for you is give you 250 rep.

Once you hit revered you will get another quest to collect 5 keys which will then send you off to kill a trapped gronn in Blade's Edge which the quest recommends 5 people for. Apparently you only need 2 people for it if you're geared decently.

This then leads onto a further two or three 5-key quests which do require 5 man groups to run up until you get a last one to go into shadow labs and use a master key made from these to summon another guy, possibly in heroic only.

The guys you fight all drop a random enchantment blue item.

As far as keys, they are dropped randomly by pretty much any ethereum guy around Manaforge Ultris, about a 1 in 50 shot based on my farming. The only thing better was the Ethereum Jailor's which dropped a key 100% of the time and appear to be on a 15 minute or so timer for respawn randomly around the prison areas.

there is a lvl 71 mob called Etherium Jailor that has a 100% drop. He is pretty tough though... I'm a lvl 70 feral druid and he killed me in my first attempt. I found him at 58,49, but i cant find him again. there is a regular avanger in its place so i think its just a random and low spawn.

yep, while grinding for Z sig (70 an hour,10 for 250 rep of Consortium), I was getting 2-3 keys dropping an hour. Since I was grinding for 6 HOURS, That is a pretty good estimation! Plus you get 100+ NW cloth an hour too! Plus 3-4 greens. Plus about 12 silver per mob.

Best way to get these in my opinion is by farming them in The Heap. There are two reasons for this,

1 - They're easier to kill and you're less likely to die.
2 - They also drop Zaxxis Insignias so you can boost your rep further.

The drop rate is poor no matter where you farm these. Expect to spend a good few hours getting 5 or so keys.

If you're farming these anywhere except the Zaxxis guys, you're wasting your time.

Spent an hour or so doing the quests at the staging grounds, got 1 key. After I finished the quest series I figured I'd avoid the farmers and go to Bash'ir landing, where I could kill without interference. An hour later, not a single key had dropped.

So I figured as a last resort I'd head for the Heap and claw a bunch of Zaxxis in the face. Firt 10 kills yielded two keys. Over the next hour I got 70 insignias, and another 4 keys.

I don't know why Blizzard thought it was a good idea to make it so you only got one place in the entire game to farm an item, but they do it a lot and prison keys are no different.

I'd definitely agree with most of the posts above. The Heap is the best place to hunt for keys. Not only the added factor that you get insignias, but the mobs are easy and there's no elite mobs to slow you down.

First time:
- Mobs: 67
- Insignias: 40
- Keys: 3
- Green drops: 2
- Turn-in: 3 ID Tags
- Net faction: 1750 Consortium

Second time:
- Mobs: 70
- Insignias: 40
- Keys: 3
- Green drops: 3 (+1 Rare BoP from prisoner)

Net faction: 900 Sporeggar, 1000 Consortium

Lesson: Kill 70 odd mobs in the Heap, get a *!@#-ton of faction and some decent loot. The bad prisoners always drop something, sometimes a rare. The good ones give you some random faction you probably need anyway.

Wanted to verify that they do drop in the Zaxxis mobs at Honored reputation; I think the only prerequisite is to gain the quest to get them in the first place.

What is the quest to start recieving these keys? Ive done lots of consortium quests and still no Keys are dropping for me.

Sometimes they are in AH!

You don't need a quest until drops these, it's just a drop of mobs with low droprate.

for those of you after a Ethereum Jailor, don't think of them as spawning after some time, think of them like a gold vein in relation to an iron vein. The Etherum Jailor is a rare spawn of the Ethereum Avengers and Nullifiers. So kill a group through a few times and you'll see one. I've actually had 2 appear in an area on occasion. Happy Hunting!

Ever since patch 2.3, you can get the keys from daily's. Just do normal instances.

Pretty good to do them for the gold aswell.

Anyone know if patch 2.3 has affected drop rated from Zaxxis raiders/stalkers? Yesterday I got 50 zaxxis insignia and only 1 prison key dropped - previously I would get 3 or 4 in this time

FOr some strange reason, they are now quest rewards from some guy call Mad'hun (one of the 2 bandage looking next to the image of a brown orc in lower city), who gives you daily quests to kill a certain type of enemy in LVL 70, non raid, instances (EG - SLABS, SH,SV etc). Also, WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

Though I don't keep exact numbers, in insignia farming I've found I get about one of these for every 20 insignia (and don't tell me none of you count your insignias by 10's :P ), so I'd say an average one per 40-50 kills in The Heap is a good estimate. I have heard they drop slightly more often at the Staging Grounds, but now I'm on that long road from revered to exalted and I figure if I'm going to be farming keys for the heroic quest, may as well take whatever other rep I can snag.

I've had the best luck getting these from the Zaxxis in the Heap - such good luck that, with 1800 rep-points to Exalted, I had 7 of these drop within 25 minutes! I was farming for insignias, but seeing as one key usually equals 10 insignias, I got off lightly for the last stretch of rep-farming.

I'm also planning on continuing to farm these even after Exalted. Hell, with a near-100% green item chance, the chance of a BoP blue, or the chance of +550 random rep with other factions when opening the prisons, and the ton of money/trash/cloth along the way...why not?

Can anyone confirm that the droprate for these is higher at The Heap vs. Bash'ir Landing?

Save these, do not turn in for rep. Run Heroic Mana Tombs for faster rep. Plus there will be at least 6 of these dropping in H-MT. My question is, after exalted, what is the best place to farm these?

BTW these go for about 20g starting bid & 25g buyout on my server's AH (Stonemaul US). They sell well.

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but when I actually had accepted the quest "Etherium Secrets" (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=10971/ethereum-secrets), I had three of these drop in 15 minutes. I wonder if having the quest in your quest log increases your drop rate of them? I realize that the key used for the quest is a different quest item, but still, I wonder if the drop rate for the normal keys isn't increased while you have the quest in your log. After I turned in the quest, I farmed for 35 minutes before I found another key.

But I think I may have been just lucky. The first prison I opened gave me a Keepers of Time prisoner who gave me 500 KoT rep. The second one was a named mob that dropped a pretty nice lvl 70 BoP blue. Too bad it was cloth (I'm a hunter), but I was able to DE it for a Large Prismatic Shard.

They drop very well at the staging grounds. Unfortunately they don't seem to sell very well in AH our server (Deathwing -EU). The price has dropped from 35 to about 20g each.

Only ever used the keys on the chambers which have the mobs in for the items - always thought the rep bubbles were pointless - 100rep for a super rare key no thx...

1 day i accidently oppend the rep bubble - and bam 500 rep for thrallmar - i have never opended a mob bubble since

What exactly does one have to do to make them drop? I hve killed more then 200 with no drops what so ever.... do i need rep or to complete a q first?

As someone posted above, I believe this is the main reason they are 30ish gold on the AH. It's the reason I save and buy them, that +500 rep has come in handy more then 3 times alrdy for me(Scale of the sandds). I have seen some nice drops, but nothing really worth saving/using at lvl 70. The keys give more rep then handing in the 5 for the Q, 250 for a card.

Mana Toombs has been the easiest and fastest way to get the keys for me. I've been using them in hope to get the random +500 rep with a faction I need, and it has occured 2-3 times, that last +500 rep I needed right then and there.

Some nice drops aswell, + shadow res on cloak, + arcane res on rings, but nothing one really needs at lvl 70, both from crafting and 25man drops are better.

It's the +500 random rep that u can get that they cost 30ish gold on the AH imo

Okay, straight up if you want to farm Consortium rep with these keys get then farm Zaxxis Raiders, they have a way higher droprate, plus you can get Zaxxis Insignia for more rep. Believe me, i spent at least 4 hours farming Ethereum's at the staging grounds and got 3, i spent 10 minutes with the zaxxis raiders and got 2 keys

I lost track of how many Zaxxis Raiders and Zaxxis Stalkers I killed but i farmed 70 Zaxxis insignia with only one Ethereum Prison Key drop. So if we can assume i killed about 140 mobs than that = < 1% drop rate. maybe the drop rate has changed. still good rep farming however.

Just do heroic Mana tombs theres like 10-15 keys drop EVERY run.

Im exalted anyhow , farmed Zaxxis insignias by the dozens till i got to it just for the monthly gems bag.

On TBC classic - killed about 150 Zaxxis guys - got 89 insignias, no ethereum key.

Anybody got them to drop keys?
