I don't consider 2 lost spelldamage over 14 stam, 4 int and 4 spell crit rating a "nerf" of this sword. Also, stamina is not a useless stat for casters. survive longer and you will do more damage than that other mage with +2000 spelldamage and 100% spellcritchance and his usual death after 2 seconds into the fight...

Also, with the change in Stam, this one gets the first viable upgrade from continuum blade or mana wrath for paladins tanking.

This is just meant as a statement of fact, not as a suggestion towards loot distribution. So please don't start flames about paladin tanking in serpentshrine, I know that is unlikely to happen with most guilds. At least until T6-grade gear becomes available. yay.

Actually the new stats for 2.1 are:
28 stam (+15)
19 intellect (+6)
20 spell crit rating (+6)

gah, where is the sword that has no crit but To Hit? Seems like there was a ton of To-hit gear when you where leveling up and getting gear from 5mans, but to-hit gear goes away to crit gear when you start to replace it with epics.

While people have said the power of this PvE item, this will work great in PvP as well with the large amount of stamina and crit.

Only the Season 2 Spellblade and BT/Hyjal items are better item than this item for caster PvP.

In patch 2.2, Fang of the Leviathan is buffed:
1 extra INT
1 extra spell crit rating
12 extra damage!

I noticed that this was not pointed out before, but some people might be interested...

Leviathan was a Biblical sea monster referred to in the Old Testament (Psalm 74:13-14; Job 41; Isaiah 27:1). The word leviathan has become synonymous with any large sea monster or creature. In the novel Moby-Dick it refers to great whales, and in Modern Hebrew, it means simply "whale".

Kind of interesting...it lines up with the fact that it drops in an underwater sea cave with sea monster type people.

With the 2.2 patch buff, this sword is the best pre-BT weapon available for mages and destro warlocks. Before the buff, the Merc Glad Spellblade took the cake (and was also easily obtainable by any level 70 player with a sufficient time investment) because it had substantially more +damage on it. However, the spellblade's item budget is spent on resilience and hit, stats that by the time you are downing Leotheras are completely unnecessary because 1) resilience is not a raiding stat for casters and 2) a raiding caster should have been hit capped long ago.

This weapon has only 4 less damage but 21 more crit than the spellblade. It has more stam and more int on it. Get this sword!! You will not regret it.

With it's shape and colour Fang of the Leviathan fits Mage's T4 greatly. This sword is basicly a stat upgrade to Bloodmaw Magus-Blade from Gruul's Lair.

Wonderful at least one answer :D
But i think i will stick to the talon because im not at spellhit cap just yet.
so with my sockets in it im trading:
27 spelldmg
For:
8 spell crit
17 spell hit.
am i dumb for doing this?

Nice sword. Merciless gladiator spellblade is a bit better than it though and you dont need to advance far into SSC and wait for it to drop every damn week.

For paladin tanking, the Amani Punisher (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=33283) is better. +2 points on stamina, +1 on intellect, a little faster (better use of seals and judgements), and a spell hit bonus instead of spell crit (much more useful, specially since righteous defense began to be affected by spell hit). You'll only lose 4 points of spell dmg.

Quite disappointing "improvement", regarding to the dagger that drops from Prince Malchezaar in Karazhan or the sword dropped by Gruul. I'd still prefer Nathrezim Mindblade or Bloodmaw Magus-Blade.

Sorry to break this to guys but this is the best paladin tanking weapon in the game come 2.1.0. Any paladin that knows his class would be able to tell you guys that.

that healadin is right no healadin needs this sword since there are far more better reput gear for healadins and prot pallies above are right too cos in tankadins spelldamage is more important than sta or defense rating since before health and armor a tank needs to hold aggro and tankadins suck at it if they dont have enough spell damage...so far its a retri pally who is saying this..go for it tankadins...

Here is a idea, seeing how im sure it will not be the first time it drops for the ppl that want it why not keep running it intill everyone has it? I found that everyone in raids allmost get to the point of fighting for items when in fact it drops more then once in a lifetime, go raid keep raiding and then everyone can have it or something better!

btw ppl who mock me from what i said must be a spoild brat and in that case should never get it.

To clear up numerous pointles posts:

1) Im dissapointed with the statts on the weapon, to say it drops mid way through SSC, compared to the ease of the mindblade.

2) YES, pally tanks are used in SSC - we have one grab aggro during the murloc phase of the Morogrim encounter. Heal aggro is always easy to achieve since theres always damage after the earthquake.

3) A good offhand would be either the Heroic badge bought epics from the vendor in Shatt, or if your in SSC anyway hold out for the drop from Hydross - "Fathomstone"

well i gotta 70 pally and 70 warrior, warrior is prot and i just made my pally prot and it is about 20% easier to tank and hold aggro with my pally. It's not a night and day difference but it is a noticeable difference where as when i tanked Mag i noticed that i was way on top of the threat meter where as on my warrior i was on top but not by much

I have a 70 holy pally and i have to say that when he was prot even though its not the best thing to be happening, but its better for pally tanks to be taking damage. why? because when they gets healed after he takes damage, guess what? They gets mana! as for when they is full health, they won't get any mana. Having the pally tank get more mana when they is taking damage and tanking is great because they can keep on using seals and judgements and what-not they use to keep on getting aggro. This is good because it gives +sta, +int, +spell damage and +spell crit, and i know everyone knows that when you crit on a spell, your aggro shoots way up the charts. But i'm not trying to say that lock/mages can't roll on this because of course this is also a great caster weapon, but take in fact that first, we are not referring this item as being Holy item, but Tanking pally item; and second, to not think that pally tanks aren't good because pally tanks are becoming more and more popular to have in raids and in groups...cuz i don't know about the servers that u people are playing in, but tanks are now hard to find to have in a group now, so keep in mind when you see one trying to join your group/raid, they may help out a lot!

I know this is an awesome sword for pally tanks, but to be honest I would be a bit upset if I lost it to a paladin (warlock here), but I would get over too. Great thing we only have one semi-active pala tank in the guild.

I play a SHOCKADIN, that means, the holy dps tree of the paladins. Shockadins need spell dmg to do dps. This is a high spell dmg sword, so perfect for a shockadin.

Pally Tank here... Anyway we all know that Continuum Blade is the standard for any decent pally tank... Now compare them, keeping in mind that +spelldamage = threat for prot pally. Also someone above mentioned it would free up the +40spelldamage enchant, this makes for a few possibilities. IMHO lock/prot pally/mage should have chance at this item...

As far as wepaons go...Its up to your guild. Im a pally tank and my guild would let me roll on this because they know me and know what i can do. Its not a matter of flaming or childish spam. Let the raids decide who gets what n thats the end of it. If a rogue wants to roll on it n the raid lets him...thats their problem. Not yours. It is a desirable weapon to Pallys..yes, to mages...yes, to locks...yes. So what if a tank might not be as good as another spec. This is a game. Sometimes people like challenges. If there wasnt diversity there would be 3 classes. Tank, DPS, n Healer..end of story. But having this broad spectrum of classes lets people do what they want to. be happy, n stop QQ.

Wow, whats the point of your dps scaling up when your pally tank is left back with lower spell dmg? So you can just pull aggro, die, and wipe the raid? Yeah I'm glad my guild understands that if the tanks dont hold aggro then the raid wipes.
