These are the only non-tiered shoulders with block value. Don't ever sell them.

I wear these over the Warchief's Mantle (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29316). For tanking, the Warchief just dont seem that great. I was even wearing my champion shoulders over those until I was able to wear the Nexus-Guard shoulders and keep my defense over 490. Wish they looked as cool as the Warchief's though.

I've seen so many protection Paladins tank with Spaulders of the Righteous (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27739) or Warriors with Shoulderguards of the Bold (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=27803).

These provide more total mitigation (though not pure avoidance), towards becoming uncrushable--unless perhaps socketing the set pieces with expensive avoidance gems (though, you can get more stamina on tier set pieces with two +12 stam gems):

Nexus-Guard's Pauldrons:
17 agility - 0.68 % dodge
17 block rating - 2.15% block
TOTAL: 2.83% mitigation (0.68% pure avoidance)

Spaulders (Shoulderguards have 3 less defense rating):
20 defense rating = 8.4 defense skill:
0.33 % dodge
0.33 % parry
0.33 % block
0.33 % miss
TOTAL: 1.35% mitigation (about 1% pure avoidance)

They're quite excellent for AoE Tanking/Soloing (Demon Hunter Supplicants, anyone), but possible upgrades:

these also have block RATING on them, not showing properly for some reason, having trouble working out what an upgrade might be!

I am never surprized anymore how crappy Warrior's rewards are.
Every other class gets top of the line blues and greens that give them mega bonuses and stats but when it comes to warriors they get picked on all the time and left with just the lamest stats and you gotta accept it cause it's all warriors get. Very sad, truly. VERY.

How does this compare to Warchief's Mantle for tanks? Are these good pauldrons to have once your defense is already at 490 and you need to switch to dodge/parry/block?

I know block rating isn't as valuable because tanks will be using "shield block" as much as possible, but it still helps... and the + to shield block value helps with SS too...

Any opinions on this as tanking shield?

The Warchief's have better stats, and have 2 sockets, which is nice. But the Warchief's are harder to get.

These are definitely worth considering if you are a tank with max defense, and you are looking to improve you shield stats.

Where these shoulders are nice is that you get 2 boosts to your shield ratings:
The +17 block rating increases the chance that your shield will successfully block an attack
The +26 block value means damage taken is reduced

Becuase these shoulders increase your block value, they improve your shield slam ability as well. If you add enough block value to your build, a shield slam has the potential to crit for +1000.

These shoulders add avoidance(+block) equivalent to Fanblade Pauldrons, which only drop in Heroic. If you already have your 490 defense and are working towards uncrushable, these are very nice.
