This gem appears to be wrongly statted for two reasons: first, it has two stats found only on red gems, unlike other purple gems which have a red stat and a blue stat; and second, the other two gems in the "shifting" line (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24055 and https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=23110) both have agility and stamina.

This is THE gem for dps druids (cat). It gives 16 AP in cat form with HOTW, + the crit and dodge from agility.

This is the best dps gem for rogues in blue sockets aswell. All other blue/purple/green gems are either ap/agi/crit + _stamina_. This epic gem scales with Blessing of Kings and Vitality aswell. But personally I would go for Shifting Nightseyes in blue sockets to meet requirements on meta and socket bonuses for the extra stamina.

At this moment - due to the weird setting of stats - this gem is the best choice for any melee DPS class to fulfill their Metagem-requirement (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=32409).
Shifting Tanzanite is a purple gem and thus will count as 1x Blue & 1x Red, allowing you to choose Yellow +10 hit gems for your other gem slots. After the 2.4 patch you will be able to use 2 Shifting Tanzanites at a time when the 'Unique-Equipped' tag will be removed.

Compared to Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=32212) you gain 5 strength while losing 7 stamina and 1 agility. It's still a good idea to farm this gem given the huge demand for Shadowsong Amethysts by almost every class and it's comparatively low drop rate in Black Temple. In my guild I have to be on the waiting list for ~4 weeks to get a Shadowsong Amethyst :D

All three bosses of heroic Steamvault have a ~2-3% chance of dropping the Shifting Tanzanite, while the other two gems obtained in this instance drop at a ~6-8% chance. So good luck farming them, it took me 2 weeks to get one :)

Before Patch 2.4, i would have to say that this was the best DPS Gem for Warriors/Feral Druids (out of BT) in a Blue slot... I was so excited for the patch, so that this gem wasn't unique equipped, i have 4-5 of them in my bank. Now it's a mediocre gem at best.

In most cases, gems that match multiple colors (Red & Blue) usually pull stats that are associated with those colors. Ie, Agility is a red stat, Strength is a Red Stat, Stamina is a blue stat.

This gem seems to be a red/red gem, but it gives credit for red/blue. Still, I'll take one if I can get one!

Okey so its the best DPS druid gem in the game, but...does that mean I (enhance) have to greed every time I am in a group with a druid? That would mean I will not see this gem in a loooooong time, also druid DPS is not that common in raids, they are great tanks, even more reason for rogues/warriors/shamans to roll on it. So my point is, if you need it just need on it, and dont be selfish

rogues and warriors (not sure about shaman) gain a stronger bonus for values over raw stats.

with so many DPS gems available based on 'crit rating', 'attack power' + a stat (mostly stam) which favours rogues/hunters/warriors, it's a pleasure to find a gem existing offering pure raw stats and the availability of blue slot placement.

all in all the difference in rating for us ferals and other physical dps is minimal. the game would be much more like a game with enjoyment if people relaxed a little about the tiny bonus difference an item of such low stats offer (such as a gem). i can imagine a RL situation where someone kneecaps an old lady for taking a car parking spot near the mall as "zomg! that carpark spot would be so much more benefitial to me!"

The gem is BoP so u can't trade it. What if u insert it inside a BoE item that has a slot? Does the BoE item then turn into BoP? If no, this is the best way to sell BoP gems u had greed-rolled!

In an idea world, the only gems a raiding rogue will use are red/yellow or orange. Most raiding rogues will have all their gems yellow/red and 2 "blue" gems just to get the meta gem to work. Flat out +stam blue gems are useless to a raiding rogue, because it does nothing to increase his DPS output, green/purple gems give stam on top of a DPS increasing stat, but the stam from these gems are somewhat undesirable because, again, stam doesn't increase one's DPS.

Yes, for rogues, 1 strength = 1 ap. So this gem is basically a 4ap & 4agi gem. (Well very slightly better than 4ap, since kings increases your AP from strength)

Yes most of the following has already been said. But people still think this gem isn't for rogues so here is my rogue perspective on it.

This is the best blue gem in the game for a PVE RAID DPS oriented Rogue HANDS DOWN. Yes it's better then any of the hyjal/bt blue gems. Why you ask? because the only other blue gems that would benefit a rogues raid dps is crit/STAM, agil/STAM. This gem, as stated above is different because it has red/red properties instead of the usual red/blue that we see on purple gems.

I am in no way saying that this isn't also the best gem in the game for xxxxx class. Anyone who can benefit from the stats on this gem has the right to roll on it, and I wouldn't be upset to lose it to a feral/fury/enhance. What I am saying is that if you are a rogue and you think this gem isn't for you because it has str on it, you're dumb, str = ap too fool (increased by kings.) Therefore this gem is basicly 5+ap/4+agil for a rogue with kings. If you are any other class and you think this isn't for a rogue because it has str on it, you're also just as dumb.

With Heroic gems no longer being Unique-Equip in patch 2.4 this will become the best blue melee dps gem. Anyone who does melee dps should be rolling for this gem. Sure some classes may squeeze more stats from it (e.g. my fury warrior raid buffed will get 12ap and ~3 crit from this) but regardless, its still the best gem for all melee classes who need a blue gem to not lose out on a socket bonus. So enhancement shamans, rogues, feral druids, warriors, ret paladins, roll away and good luck!

Ferals, this is NOT the best gem. Stack as many delicate (6/8/10 agil) as possible. 2xShifting Tanzanite should only be used to activate your Relentless meta gem as its better DPS than Shifting Nightseye.

Also in 2.4, "heroic gems" will no longer be unique-equipped, meaning that these are going to be very valuable to a feral tank. Having these in every blue/red slot available would yeild fantastic results... although I have seen several gems that make these kinda "meh"... 10 agil FTW?

A lot of melee DPS classes will be very sad about this, but the good old got nerfed from +5 Strength +4 Agility to +5 Agility and +6 Stamina. It's been added to the list of undocumented changes from the latest PTR Build

This is totally a hunter gem. Everything a hunter needs If any one would roll need on it a hunter should... Hunters are all about the Agility and the Stamina.
