Does anyone else find it odd that this is an orange gem when spell damage is a red stat, and spell penetration is a blue one? Logically I'd expect this to be purple.

Unfortunately, that means this is competing for the red/yellow sockets, along with everything else casters use (spell hit and crit are both yellow stats). I guess that leaves the Radiant Crysoprase (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=30608) for the blue socket.

Now that they are no longer unique, I went a bit nuts and used these gems on my warlock (27/34/0). Good times :)

An interesting gem. Could be useful for PvP Warlocks looking to gem offensively, and need to fill yellow slots for their meta requirement. Spell Penetration is always useful for fighting both Warlock and Hunter pets, and can be useful in the case a player has any resistance.

Awful, awful item.
You would be better off with the +9 damage or +12 damage gems.

I´d use this over a +9 gem or the dmg/crit gem for a yellow socket, if I´d get any usefull socket bonus by doing so.
It is rather limited what use shadowpriests gets from yellow socket gems, since crit doesnt boost our main dmg pve spells. So i tend do use the heroic yellow socket gems for getting the few socket bonuses thats worth getting.

Go here and read about resistances. Even if a player/mob has zero resistance to a certain school of magic that you are using, it is still possible to have your spells resisted by them. The more spell penetration you have, the least likely it will be that you will get resisted. But keep in mind that there is always a 1% chance to be completely resisted regardless of level or resistance score and which also means that you have at least a 1% chance to completely resist player/mob spells regardless of level or resistance score.

This particular gem would be useful if you required a certain gem color to activate a meta gem.

Why does this gem fit Red and Yellow sockets? All Spell Penetration gems are Blue.

The WoW pages didn't talk about penetration, that I saw. However, it seems logical that it counters resistance. So why is it that this is seen as a crappy gem? 50 penetration counters 50 resistance?
If anyone knows, please post.
Also, if they do follow thru with the rumors of resilience being a new resist, penetration will no doubt be a counter.

You guys are correct this is pretty much correct about not really needing penetration in PvE. But I also think that you are confusing spell pen for spell hit.

Spell hit is what is needed so you dont see that damn RESIST word come up on your SCT.

Spell pen is what is needed if you dont want to see 455 (344 resisted) on your DoTs.

Mobs have a base resistance of a big whopping 0 while bosses in instance normally have a base resistance of 50-75.

Now if you have a really cool warlock in your raid that is more concerned about the overall dps of the raid and will throw a curse of shadows up on a boss (reduces targets resistance to shadow and arcane by 88 and increasing damage done by those spells by 10%) then spell pen is absoulutly not needed at all.

Right... this gem would be good for raiding if you dont have the warlok throw up shadows or elements.. especcially if you dont want to see one of your spells hit really low in dmg

In Pvp this can be useful as well to get through targets with high reistances(I.E. mages with mage armor or magic absorbtion, warlocks with felhunters/felguards, shaman resist totems, pally auras, shadow protecton, Racial resistances, resist gear etc...

I can see this work on an undead demonology warlock with felhunter/felgaurd who has buttloads of shadow resist( can stack more with demon armor but doubt it...) your spells will not only be reduced by soul link, but resisted partially as well...(not counting resilience xD) but for also spells which dont have inital damage (dots, spellsteal, dispel magic, etc) are more likey to be resisted and not even land with perioic resists on dots...

seems like a decent addition if, like me, you build your character not to exclusively raid or exclusively PVP, but to do a good mix of both. penetration can be very useful for nullifying resistances in PVP; this gem plus a +20 enchant on your cloak instantly wipes out an un-improved mark of the wild. and the 6 +dmg is better for PVE than what you get out of most yellow gems. good gem for a hybrid PVE/PVP build.
