Major use for this is clear: It is the Warrior or Paladin tank's response to any mob who applies an "Unbalancing Strike" debuff (temporary defense drop) in order to avoid getting crushed or crit. An example would be the Twin Emperors of AQ.

In any other fight however, it would be somewhat of a waste of a tanking trinket slot, far better mitigation trinks are available. So perhaps it is being included as a ward against a future fight using an updated version of this mechanic.

As a warrior at level 70, you gain 1% overall avoidance per 20 defense rating, and some block % too.

This trinket gives you:

- A passive 1.75% avoidance & around 0.5% block chance.
- An active 7.5% avoidance & around 2+% block chance.

A nice trinket, but really not much better at all than moroes' dodge trinket, and furthermore this trinket is nigh on useless for a feral tank wheras moroes' dodge trinket can be used by any tank.

Actually this trinket is quite useful for a feral tank as it has the highest pure def availiable from a trinket, granted the clicky on it is better for a war/pal.

basically it can free up the other trinket slot with the right accessories allowing the druid to use the full t4/5/6 gear without having to resort to any of the heavy clefthide gear.

Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch is the most similar item this would be considered an upgrade from.

Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch:
equip: 2% avoidance
use: additional 15.85% avoidance

Scarab of Displacement:
equip: 2.12% avoidance/0.70% block chance (Druid: 1.41% avoidance)
use: additional 8.35% avoidance/2.78% block chance (Druid: 5.57% avoidance)

For paladins and warriors, it's not a huge slam-dunk upgrade over the pocket watch, but it is a good trinket. The passive effect is a little better, the use is significantly worse, and defense instead of dodge has the small added benefit of helping you crank up defense when wearing resist gear that might be struggling a bit on crit immunity -- like when you are tanking the guy who drops this :)

I'm sure a lot of folks turn up their nose at 0.12% improvement and a usually-useless 0.7% block, but an extra 0.12% improvement when you are already at the ~50% avoidance that you will probably have from full pre-SSC/TK gear means 0.24% less incoming damage, and very slightly more for warriors vs. mobs that hit faster than every 2.5s -- the avoidance will very slightly increase shield block uptime.

For me (warrior) I like it better... I prefer even the minor passive always-on benefit to the better panic button. If theres a fight that really wants the panic button, it'll still be in my bags. All the same, I think thats a matter of opinion -- I wouldn't think anyone was wrong for preferring the stopwatch.

I would guess druids would absolutely never prefer this to a pocket watch, but then again, I'm not a druid.

This is actually pretty good for hydross himself, makes it easier to maintain high defense with a small number of FrostR/NR pieces.

I agree with CastleOrange, the big strength of this trinket is the high defence value and is therefore good for any fight where you might want to swap a piece of your regular gear (or several) for some resistance gear.

Therefore, to calculate it's worth for dmg mitigation, it would be worth considerring how much mitigation you get in a particular fight from this AND 2 or 3 other items together.

For example - a fight where the dmg is part physical part shadow dmg, both at dangerous levels. Take off your normal defence-laden chest and legs and take off Moroes trinket, put on a high Resistance chest and legs and this trinket to cover the lost defence..... more mitigation? quite likely a lot more.

I'm not sure if Defense works differently for warriors, but I didn't think so. (Has this thing been reitemized?)

Anyway here's the math as I see it.
Passive: 42 DR / 2.37 = ~18 actual defense
18 / 25 = 0.72 chance per dodge/parry/miss/block
That's 2.2% pure mitigation, 0.72% block

Active: 165 DR / 2.37 = ~70 actual defense
70 / 25 = 2.8 chance per dodge/parry/miss/block
8.4% pure mitigation (maximum), 2.8 block
Counting only full %'s that 6% pure mitigation minimum with the on use (since partial %'s don't count on their own)

Note: If you are already uncrushable (which you would be in SSC) via shield block or holy shield, the extra block chance will be falling off the combat table. That's still a fair chunk of extra, pure mitigation on use, but given things like the pocket watch I have to agree that the passive effect is what this is useful for. Another thing it would allow you to do is trade out some of your defense gems for stamina ones. Also, for pallies (assuming would could obtain this) the threat loss would be negligible since we rely on spell damage.

I think this trinket will be very useful post-2.3, since a lot of Zul'Aman tanking gear I have seen scratch defense in favor of increased threat generation (hit rating, expertise, parry, and block value).
This is useful in case you want to maintain 490+ defense while wearing high threat gear.

165 defense rating = approx 6.6% avoidance per avoidance stat.

The use on this provides:
6.6% more miss, dodge, parry (the pure avoidance stats), and since your block is probably already falling off the table, the block isn't worth mentioning. (6.6x3)

19.8% pure avoidance when activating this trinket.

This is quite a bit more than just a "sidegrade" as people claim. This is genuinely better than moroes lucky pocket watch.
The passive also provides 0.71 parry, dodge, block, miss (2.84% avoidance passive, counting block this time because passive may be providing part of your block benefit)

This is a fantastic trinket for protection paladins at the very least, it is debatable with other tanking classes, but to gain that much additional defense at the cost of strength (attack power), a stat that we try our best to avoid at all costs, then you are looking at much more flexibility for your second trinket. With this in hand you could pick up a darkmoon fair card for stamina and not have to worry about the lost defense.

for people who don't think this trinket is hardcore for tanking your wrong. not only does it have alot of defense, but allows you to itemize your gear how you want. take for example if you were under the defense cap, which believe it or not alot of tanks in some of the old badge gear are barely hanging by a thread, you could swap this trinket in and stack stamina or something else to your liking.

Another thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that defense also gives extra miss avoidance. I don't know the conversion rates but an extra 42 defense and and the use effect adds more avoidance than just parry/dodge. If someone could post with the calculations it would be great.

From what i read on wowwiki you get an extra 1% static miss avoidance and 4% miss on use, so obviously more pure avoidance while equipped than the pocketwatch but still less when used. Although the extra static helps prevent those "oh $%^&" situations....clearly superior in my opinion. Now if i could only get Hydross to drop it....

Popping this trinket only increases your total mitigation stats by a combined 8.3% So your 8% less likely to take the full damage of the melee attacks you take in the next 15 seconds. I personally use a 51 Stam Darkmoon card and the figurine of the collosus which I can pop to heal me for 120 after each block, which is effectivley the same as +120 Block value aslong as I survive the attack I block. I wouldnt use this over either of them, even if I am a paladin and don't lose aggro generating capability when I pop it, I dont lose it when I use my current ones either... And besides, the 42 defense isnt terribly appealing when your already uncritable and have 4% of avoidance or 51 Stam on your current trinkets.

Not to say that a Warrior or Feral tank cant make use of this, they sure can, but I think a Paladin tank could make better use of this, as most of thier aggro comes from holy damage, and a decrease in attack power won't effect spell damage. The lowering of thier white damage won't hit them as hard as it would on a Warrior or Feral.

Just my thought.

It does stack with pocket watch. Together they combine for what could be termed a mini-shield wall. Every 3 minutes, its a nice ass saver.

Actually this is another "Oh S***T" trinket, the +35 defense is very cool, but the 150 defense makes you "white damage only" from even a lvl 73 boss, at a cost in your dps until a healer gets to you. 15 sec is plenty of time for a couple big heals on a tank.

This little Trinket is a must have in my opinion for protection paladins since it basically changes nothing to your threat generation. Aggro being essentially based on the amount of holy damage you deal and not on the amount of physical damage dealt, the -300 Atk power can be prtty much ignored

Keep in mind that a Warrior with Thunderfury produces most of his aggro from the weapon proc, which is unaffected by attack power. But a Tankadin will equally benefit from it. However, if the tank is already using Moroes kickass Pocket Watch, one boost effect is wasted since you can't use them both at the same time.

This trinket would be the most effective for a pally tank, since they use mostly spell damage, and losing 300 attack power hardly lowers the amount of threat they put out. However almost no one is using a pally for end game tanking, so very few will beable to get their hands on this.

This trinket adds 2.5% dodge, 2.5% parry, 2.5% block when activated. Im assuming most tanks would be above the 490cap already, however thats still 5% complete avoidance and 2.5% additional crushing blow reduction.

Not that bad imo.

Swap some other gear around to allow efficient use of the standard 35def rating and you will be set.

Does anyone know where it drops?

The +42 Def allows you make some room for extra dodge/block via gems or enchants, this isn't imba, but definitly very useful in certain encounters.

As for the use ability, this WOULD be imba in certain resistance based fights when a lot of your gear is nerfed.

Tanks should NEVER refuse this item.

i have this trinket, and i really like the high defense. it has given me the ability to take some of the +def/+stam gems out of my regular tank gear and stack it with straight +12stam gems. im so far above the defense cap, and i have such high mitigation stats (23 doge, 20.4 parry) that im willing to give up a couple socket bonuses in dodge and block for just straight up health.

Currently i'm using this trinket and the lucky pocket watch for most my boss tanking.

For those of you who say using this trinket will reduce my threat... its minimal.

Lastly, i finally gave up my Styleen Scarab for this. it was a GREAT trinket, but the use off the Scarab of Displacement > styleens passive.'

Styleen stil pwns alot in my opinion. But with the use effect on this, it might jsut gow pwnd. Havent looked that much into this.

But one this is defently for sure. This trinket allows you to make another gear setup. Which is the only reason I will take this when it drops.
Putting on that big amount of defense rating, just pushes alot of gems and enchants of the table if we talk about what is necassey.

So yeah can just fill more stamina and hit on your gear instead. It's just a balance maker for me tbh.

Also, really nice for Resistance gear a person replied with some time ago here. When you use lots of resistance gear, you automatically reduce your defense alot. So this would be the perfect balance maker.

It's good. But to me it's still only a trinket, that allows you To balance your gear dif. cause of the high amount of Defense. A tank with lets say 510-520 defense, that gets this and "don't" rebalance his gear after it, aint suposed to have it.

This is a superb trinket to compensate for the lost defense rating you get when you equip resistance gear for a boss like Hydross the Unstable. I would definately use it in that combo.
Don't know for regular tanking since you allready pass the 490 defense marker with regular gear, so it's not really needed there.

next one trinket i want on my prot war yep reduce ap = a little less threat ok just not have to pop it at the start of the figth wait like 10sec or wait for appropriate time like on some bosse some phase hit harder

im currently more than half epic running kara and gruul wish to start ssc and mag soon and when i pop my adamantite figurine and moroes pocket watch with moongosse i go up to 45% dodge pretty scary with this maybe i will get to 48% but prolly i will have more gear since there lol

Fillin you have forgotten that druids dont have just more dodge and armor but hp too!A loooot more hp than warriors have so that still makes them very good tanks and equal with warriors!

For some reason..... which is beyond me, many tanks believe defence to be completely useless after 490 defence. Once you have reached 490defence it means that you are no longer critable, yet you are still subject to crushing blows which are just as detremental. having defence beyond 490 still gives you block/dodge/parry and chance to be missed which is still awesome dmg mitigation, aswell as the fact that it improves your odds to avoid crushing blows which imo are just as crucial to avoid as crits when tanking.

So I was trying to figure out whether to use this or Moroes's Lucky Pocketwatch. I did a few experiments...not too thorough, this was like a 5min thing just to get a general sense of which one I should use. I came up with this:

• Moroes's Lucky Pocketwatch gives about 1.5x more avoidance than the Scarab.

• When active, Moroes's Lucky Pocketwatch provides approximately 4x more avoidance than the Scarab of Displacement taking into account the differences in how long each one lasts. (It'd probably be even more if I bothered to factor in the cooldown times)

Don't take these numbers as accurate, I pretty much just added some stuff in my head and rounded everything. It does give a general picture though.

I'll be sticking with my Pocketwatch for most fights, though the Scarab will find its use for those pesky resistance fights, and I'll probably equip both when I need a whole bunch of avoidance.

Something a lot of tanks forget.

So you have 490 defense. Items like this give you enough defense, you can remove points from anticipation that you don't need.

Thus freeing up talents.

Stats come from all sorts of items.

Talent points dont.

Can take 2-3 points out of anticipation, still keep 490 defense, and put those points into better tools like imp HS 3/3 or sunder 3/3. especially now that it counts for devastate too.

Anyone who thinks Prot Warriors make threat out of Melle Damage is just stupid. It wouldnt affect your TPS much at all if you used this trinket.

This trinket is an awesome trinket, mostly because nowadays with the new badge gear and ZA loot, defense is kind of a commodity to be desired. I am currently sitting at 477 defense, with the only thing leaving me uncrittable being a little bit of resilience (thank god -.-)...
