The best pre-raid tanking weapon in my opinion.

315 HP, 14 AC, ~0.3% dodge for a prot warrior.

Less stam, less DPS. Not so much a replacement, but rather a -- get this first. It's a quest reward from a VERY short chain from Nagrand (3 killing quests -- last part needs a 5man). You probably won't be getting the axe 'till you hit 70 and this sword will get you there.

Wouldn't Warbringer (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29165) and Honor's Call (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29156) be better pre-raid items? I realize they're epic, but they're just Thrallmar/Honor Hold rep--which is Shattered Halls, right?

The Sun Eater (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29362) is with no doubt the best pre-raid tanking weapon. It looks like a raid drop, but is only Heroic Mechanar. And to the comments below, Tank wep is about speed + stam etc + def etc. not dps or max damage.

definity a great weapon. Although i use the King's Defender/Sun Eater now, i still have this weapon in my inventory with a Weapon-Chain on it, for those tricky ethereals in Karazhan.

Yes, best blue tanking weapon to get before you get an epic 1hander. It replaced my Crystalline Kopesh. I will tank with this 1h axe until an epic 1hander is available for me, whether it be a drop or reputation reward.
Easy, easy easy quest chain. Seems like it looks long but it isn't. Its easier than Onyxia key chain quest for sure. lol

Been using this for quite awhile. <3 it. Have yet to find a pre-raid weapon better than this, except the ones for Thrall/Honor Hold rep.

An alternative Tankin MH i would recommend IMHO is Latro's Shifting Sword off Aeonus in Black Morass which u need to run anyway if you're getting keyed for Karazhan.

Latro's has slightly higher DPS,Speed & also a very important expertise rating.

However, if you really need the Def & Stam on this axe, guess this would be your MH for tankin till u get better in heroics or Karazhan.

Now 2.4 is out, new level 70 prot warrior tanks can also consider getting Inuuro's Blade which is a revered faction reward item from the Shattered Sun Offensive. Besides, you'll probably be grinding rep with them anyway for cash and the exalted shield, Dawnforged Defender.

I think this is a great tanking wep especially for prot Orc Warrior. With the +5 expertise racial gain for axes. I'm still debating if the Kings Defender or Sun Eater is better for Orc Warriors. Any thoughts?

For a newly prot warrior, im exalted with sso but i have no access to a weapon and im considering doing the chain as fury still since i have 2 epic weapons, would this or Inuuro's Blade be better for tanking until i have a chance at something better?

Long quest chain, but looks like it starts with Enraged Spirits of Fire and Earth

Believe this is also the quest to start your tempest keep key.

This axe is really nice, especially with the +15 str enchant. Makes for a really good axe for tanking. I notice that a lot of warriors are still carrying Thunderfury at level 70, I recommend doing the quest string to get this axe instead. I know that Thunderfury has a lot of really nice procs, but Grom'tor's Charge has over 13 more DPS, a great speed for a one hand axe, 22 more stamina than Thunderfury, an even an extra point of agi. And again throw the +15 str enchant on it and you have a much better tanking weapon. Even for dual weilding DPS warriors this is a good weapon to have. I know that there are many other weapons out there that blow this one away, but, for some of us that aren't able to get in on many instance runs due to RL or what ever the case may be, and aren't raiders, this is really nice to have.

This is the Cipher of Damnation quest line. It starts with Earthmender Torlok in Shadowmoon Valley. He will send you on a number of quests to steal the spirits of four different elements, starting with Enraged Spirits of Fire and Earth.

He then sends you off to find Oronok. Oronok has you do a bunch of quests around his place, then tells you about his own past. He then sends you off to find his three sons and the three fragments of the Cipher. I recommed Grom'tor, Ar'tor, then Borak. Borak needs a group of at least 4. Keep in mind on Borak's final part, you can run back fast enough from the graveyard to continue the fight sometimes.

After that, you assemble the Cipher and call forth a large elemental that needs a good group of 5..if not a touch more. This finally gives you the rewards.

It's a long quest chain...and I gained at least half a level to 69 doing all of it. There are a lot of cool things about it...you'll get a ghostly protector on one part, and be disguised as a BE on another part. The bad part is the GY's aren't always in good spots in Shadowmoon...I had 4-5 minute runs back to my body sometimes.

Unless you have the Thunderfury, which is getting nerf today anyway, or soon. This is probally one of the best tanking weapons you can get early on. I use it in Karazhan raids. I recommend all tanks get this weapon, that can use it.

This axe is so great for tanking but i guess you already know that, my main point is that as far as i'm concern this sword is better for tanking then Honor Hold and Thrallmar exalted weapons, ye, those epics have more defense but this axe has bigger stamina, and slightly better speed so i'm not surprised at all to see so many imba epic tanks wearing this instead of boring themselves to death to get Honor Hold/Thrallmar exalted only weapons, as far as i know this is best pre-epic tanking weapon and as i mentioned above its better then 2 epics also

For the guys who say this is bugged, it is not. I just finished this 20min and got this weapon.

Be sure you turned in all the ciphers to all 3 sons and then head to oronok. Otherwise you won't get the final quest. I got confused on this part, but I figured it out.

Having recently switched from a 1-handed axe with 2.60 speed to Grom'tor's axe at 1.60(?), I must say that I thoroughly prefer tanking with the quicker weapon, in lieu of any reduction to overall white damage.

I'm not a stats boffin, so I'm only going by my fairly unreliable observations, but I not only seem to build rage quicker, but the faster weapon enables me to move through threat building manouveres more rapidly - most especially Heroic Strike - which previously I had been reluctant to use if it meant waiting 2.60 sec to swing, when a shield slam would do a more effective job.

Does anyone agree? Have I lost the plot?

This is definitely best blue tanking weapon, very nice speed, great stamina and 11 def rating makes it so. i havent changed my mind before i got The Sun Eater in heroic mechanar and i would like to advise other tanks to stick with this axe before they get any epic tank weapon

I just got this weapon from the quest chain, so it's definitely not bugged as of June 20, 2007.

Make sure you talk to all three of his sons, then do each of their own quest chains. At the end of each chain, you'll take a box back to "papa orc" up on the mountain. You must have taken all three boxes (and thus all 3 fragments) to him before he gives you the final quest.

To get this thing, first you've got to go to Elwynn and farm Hogger until he drops this item:

Then you have 20 minutes to get to the Maelstrom (ignore the fatigue bar, it does not apply to you, you're special), where you hand it in to Daf't Bugr which will give you the next quest, which involves slaying all the rival city leaders.

I.e: if you're horde, slay bolvar, bronzebeard, etc).
Return to Daf't and he will tell you what a jolly good chap you are, and give you a Cleansed Ashbringer, which you then take to fairyland, where 72 hot elf ladies are waiting with the Grom'Tor's Charge, and a box of chocolate.

yeah i finally got my !@#$ together and got this weapon. ive been using such a useless weapon for such a long time <revenger>, having given up on suneater ever dropping i went for the next best thing.

gromtors tips me over 12.5k HP unbuffed, it generates threat quicker than any other weapon ive used for tanking, and i rarely lose aggro using it, as an orc warrior the +5 axe skill means i rarely miss and dont need to focus as much on +hit rating

any tanks out there who dont have the next best thing <the suneater> go and get this weapon

Fortunately, I got a nice pug for it, a few folks who were willing to help me take ruul first to get caught up.

holy pali (me) and feral druid 2 manned the big green guy :) didnt take too long either, just got the druid to go bear every now and then and growl to tank him for abit then would let it go back to sons again, we were both quest/5 man blue geared =) easy kill and good rewards

the sun eater is a great tank wepand has more DPS than this - but that does not mean its better for this has more stam and a nice +12 defence. tanks are to hold aggro not to DPS

The most likely reason you can't turn in is because you didn't finish the Second Fragment Key Chain. It is the son floating above imprisoned. At one point you need to talk to the ghost just to his left for the next part.

I flew over the mobs and talked to the son from above without drawing aggro. From above it is a little difficult to see the ghost below you. Make sure you talk to this guy to continue the chain. You will kill mobs then a giant brain who drops the fragment.

When i first read about this axe i though it was leet. After getting and using it for awhile, its pretty craptastic. The damage on this is way too low to keep aggro so I like drakefist hammer better for the damage.

Impressive truly impressive...with this i can now confidently say i am going on a killing spree. Oh and for me that is a just cause for spilling blood...its not like the axe is gonna tell me what i can or cannot decapitate right fellas. anyway good tanking wep. wish though it had the dripping blood animation that hellscreams double hander has.

I have used this for a long time. I use it in heroics and as MT in Kara and it works fine. I have absolutley no issue holding aggro. Looks cool as hell also.

I had to leave a comment cause this is a good weapon for an up and coming warrior tryin to get some items with defense on it.

OK, i went gently, /lfg, i tried /1 for local chatter, /gu, and my guild and the elitist they are preferred to pvp, i got no help at all!

Then a crazy paladin whispered me, can you tank? I said i like to think so, he said lets duo the bastard, we did. we duoed Ruul and the big ass Elemental you have to fight along side the Orcs you been helping all this time with each of the ciphers, Pally healed, i tanked, grom'tors charge is in my possesion. DO IT!

PS: We did have to try twice, ONLY cause the Horde came and ganked us midpull the first time.... but hey 2nd times a charm...

For those of us who have run HMech for months trying to get that stupid sun eater to drop, this is a great tank weapon. Prior to this i was using the Kopesh. They are both blue, and aren't 'great', but the do the job well enough to hold aggro in Kara or heroics if you have a somewhat decent rotation.

umm, help needed! iv'e done the first two cipher quests but i dont have the last one (borak) in the quest log. i go to borak and he doesnt give me anything, and neither does the father, does this mean i cant get the weapon now?
