This key is not useles, as per 2.1.2. TK and SSC attunements were lifted.

I am also wondering if I still can get the key after completing the Mag part of the chain. I have every other instance/raid related key in the game so far and I want more!

Most likely is that you cannot obtain it, because after completing Magtheridon part you didn't receive the key automatically, but had to ask A'dal again, claiming that you "lost" your key. I believe that this step has been removed.

I am curious, on the description it just says "Use: Opening", so what exactly is this item good for? I'd expect something specific, given it's quested from heroic-difficulty dungeons AND a raid.

This is the key to open the doors into The Eye, the inner sanctum of the leader of the Blood Elfs, Kael'thas Sunstrider, also known as the "Sun King".

This is the key to Tempest Keep, a raid instance.

Orbiting Tempest Keep are three smaller, nearly identical (except for color) satellites.

The one on the north side is the Botanica. The one on the south is the Mechenaar. High above them all is the Arcatraz, which requires a key to enter as well. A quest allows you to collect the two pieces of the Arcatraz key from a boss in the Mechenaar and a boss in the Botanica.
