These seem to be the Black Temple equivalents of Molten Core's Lava Cores and Fiery Cores and Naxxramas Frozen Runes in that they are items you get inside the instance which are later needed to craft resistance gear for encounters deeper inside the instance.

These are dropped randomly by trash mobs in The Black Temple, and are used to craft epic armor, mostly Shadow Resistance sets.

Heart of Darkess is a reference to a book of the same name by Jospeh Conrad. As an extra tidbit, the movie Apocalypse Now is loosely based off of Conrad's book.

Has anyone actually had any luck selling these, like for a guild vault? I mean I know there is a market for them, if for no other reason than shoulder patterns. But how much are people paying?

We are close to having all our SR made and so, close to having little use for them. I see the 1500G AH price listed here but that seems unreasonably high.

Since patch 2.2 theese also drop off trash in Mount Hyjal. They are used for quite a few craftables dropped both in Black Temple and Mount Hyjal. There are craftable for all classes and most of them have haste bonus on them

They are also used for the shadow resist gear purchaseable from the Ashtongue Deathsworn.

Quite a few guilds get stuck on Mother Shahraz (6 boss in Black temple that requires pretty much maxed out Shadow resistance) because of too few of theese hearts. Generally you should collect theese hearts for shadow resists gear before handing out for other crafting.

The name of this item is a reference to a novella of the same name by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1902. The 1979 Academy-Award winning film Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is based off of Conrad's text. I'd recommend both the movie and the book to anyone looking for something to do...other than play WoW.

I believe that this drops in Black Temple, because it is a mat for several of the BS/LW'ing patterns that drop from BT.
