Woot, this almost makes up the gigantic potion nerf. the best thing they ever did to alchemy. to bad there conjured, but still very usefull for resistance raid fights, 1 alchemist pops one and everybody has a resist potion :D

For what it's worth: I discovered mine after 8 Major Shadow Protection Potion combines. Your mileage may vary. I normally don't like posting "it took me so-and-so many" - there's thottbot for that, but with the new patch people might be interested -- and I'm sure it'll get modded down after :)

Two of my guild-mates discovered this cauldron with minimal effort. Both within the first 10 or so created major shadow protection potions. Like Slagert suggested, maybe it's just good luck, but considering I'm hearing similar results from a good number of people, it probably means that at least this cauldron recipe is an easy discovery to make.

An important note about the potions these cauldrons create: they are unique and soulbound meaning each raid member can only have 1 at a time and they cannot be traded. Cauldrons are not a means of stocking up on potions for specific fights (ie: the tanks can't get 10 Arcane Protection Potions each from the cauldron for the Curator) but rather providing the entire raid with a little bit of protection.

Keep this in mind when making these cauldrons.

If it makes anyone feel better about their bad luck, I have used up more than 100g worth of primal shadow trying to discover this God forsaken recipe with no success. So cheer up, you don't have the worst luck :)

OK so I was kind of stoked when this procc'd because all the Primal Shadows I had in my ALT bank were from like the first month of BC so it literally cost me nothing but about 3 stacks of Mana Thistle. On the 16th conjure of Super Shadow Prot Pts, this procc'd and it was the first cauldron I discovered. Time to go after some more!!!

Discovered this yesterday on my Hunter. And as in the Server Al Akir, which makes this sells good.

Iam selling each for 45 gold and sells for a lot. The fun and good thing for me is that sometimes i buy the Primal Shadows very cheap and the rest i farm, so i go plus like 40+ on each.

All i can say is, it will not take long til i get my Epic Flying mount.

Requirements to make a discovery

You must be crafting a potion, elixir, flask or performing a transmutation that was added in TBC.

As a rule of thumb that's anything that is learnt from a master alchemy trainer, dropped from a mob in outland or purchased from a vendor in outland. The only real exceptions are the pre-TBC flasks that have been made available from faction vendors in outland.

NOT requirements to make a discovery

You don't need to be in outland
You don't need a mastery
You don't need to be 375 alchemy
You don't need to be level 70
You don't need to craft yellow or orange recipes to make discoveries. Even grey recipes can proc discoveries
You don't need to be crafting a related recipe *except* in the case of cauldrons (You can discover flasks when making potions for example)

Note that discovering a cauldron recipe does not trigger the same sound effect, graphic, and local emote as other discoveries. You simply get the same effect as if you just learned a spell from a trainer and a message in the chatbox with "you have learned x" in it.

These cauldrons can be discovered by any alchemist regardless of skill level or specialty. The discovery of cauldrons is reported to have a very high proc rate, usually within the first few batches.
The Cauldron can only be discovered while making the associated potion. Major Shadow Protection Potion yields Cauldron of Major Shadow Protection.

There is no Holy Protection Cauldron (I made about 13 batches before i read this somewhere, now i have 65 Holy Prot Potions).

The Major Holy, Shadow and Arcane Protection Potion recipes are world drops and can be solo'd for. The rest are instance drops, or rep reward.

Anyone know if you have to be Elixir specialized in order to discover this? Or can I as a transmute master find this just by making prot pots?

All these are I believe randomly learned from making the potions of Major **magic school** protecting don't know with what probability though. This is a great one just because primal shadow is so cheap! All the others need 2 primals which will set you back 25-50g

The actual Cauldron is BoE. It can be traded, mailed, or auctioned and you don't need Alchemy to drop it.
