This helm is itemized so well (no "wasted" points on strength, and agility is not the best stat), that is it better for tanking than the Tier 5 and Tier 6 helms.

Arguably better than my engineering tanking helm, seeing this head has block value and the engineering helm hasn't.

As far as the stamina goes, the engineering helm has 67 + 18 + 6 + 6 stamina = 97 stamina. This with 3 12 stamina gems would have 96 stamina.

If you have access to the 15 stamina gems, then your engineering helm has 67 + 18 + 7 + 6 = 98 stamina (or you could lose the socket bonus and get 2 more stamina for 100 total with a 15 stamina gem). This helm on the other hand would have 105 stamina in that case.

Still, it has to be said that either helm will serve you very well.

I am currently using the engineering helm too. I would really love this helm to try out and for my block set. But overall......I'm starting to doubt it would be that much better.. depends which you'd rather have - 38defense (~0.5% dodge/parry/block) and 13hit or 40block 51blockvalue. I guess they are side-grades to one another? unless u truly aren't lacking in the avoidance area and are more concerned with threat. Either way, it would be nice to have. Personally, my shield (arena2) lacks defense so i'd really miss that 38 rating.

not only does my shield lack it, but so do a few other end-game tanking items (hyjal cloak, akama legs, etc)

This is an interesting sidegrade for a pallytank to the engineer goggles.

Since stam/armor are relatively the same when gemming this thing with sta, lets focus solely on the other stats.

Tankatronic gives: 1.8 Dodge / .64 parry / .64 block / .64 miss and contributes to uncrittable w/ the 16 defense skill.
This is a total of ~3.7% Avoidance, 3.1% of which is Pure avoidance.

This however, gives 1.22 Dodge / 5.07% Block if gemming pure sta.
A Total of ~6.3% Avoidance, only 1.2 of it being Pure Avoidance.
This contributes more to Uncrushable and for AOE Block sets.

When Gemming this, if you use a 4def/6sta and a 5dodge/4def gem in the yellow and red slots respectively, you will end up with a helm that gives ~6.8% avoidance, and bumping its total to ~1.7% Pure Avoidance, which is a significant boost to the pure mit portion of it.

This makes it a very good choice for a AOE Pallytank as block rating is uber for that. A clear upgrade over Goggles in trash scenarios. I dont want to avoid what my holy shield could absorb.

I would recommend this for a pallytank if and ONLY if, you can put this into your gearset and not lose uncrittable. The loss of 16 defense is hard to recoup.

This piece also has such a large amount of mit, it might be good to integrate into a boss tanking set too as a stopgap to uncrushable. Personally I would still use Tier4 for the 2piece bonus for threat gen, but if your gear is lacking and you may eat crushings without, use it. Just make DARN sure you're still over the 490 def cap though.

A fine piece of tanking gear, and the only helm with block value together with T4 pre-BT/MH. Recommended enchant is the https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=19782 from ZG, giving you an extra 10 sta, some defence and 15 BV. This enchant is a bit wasted on the engi goggles or T5 since you spread out stats too much, which are best left stacked on items for easy swapping around with each encounter.

Hmm, as many ZA loot, this item is once again focussed on our warrior friends actually. A paladin has no trouble getting uncrushable, at least he or she shouldn't have any trouble with that by the time he/she is geared well enough for ZA. Getting more than a combined block/parry/dodge/miss of 67% is kind of useless for paladins, as you get another 35.5% from holy shield (assuming you have the libram). And 67% is easily reached with some defense and a bunch of dodge rating.

My paladin is currently geared purely with karazhan drops and badge rewards, is uncrushable, yet only requires 11 block rating.

This is truly a warrior item, as many bosses in higher end dungeons have some nasty damage spikes. Seeing more than 3 attacks in 5 seconds is very common, and so are crushing blows. A warrior would really like to add this to his or her collection to close the gap.

Then again, if you're looking into getting some more stamina or other stats, the shield block rating can keep you in the safe zone by keeping you uncrushable as paladin.

With the 15 stamina quest gem from ZA and two +12 stamina gems (which I will upgrade as soon as it becomes feasible) I currently have 99 stamina on this hat. The lack of defense is made up for by proper ring selection. While the block rating ends up being a trifle high for a warrior tank, the block value helps very much with shield slam aggro on big fights. In general, if the hat didn't look like I just won a fight with an evil chicken and put his head on top of my own face, perhaps to scare away other evil chickens, I'd be astonishingly happy instead of just very happy with it.

for those of you who have not noticed as of patch 2.4 the block rating has been turned into defense rating (not sure if this is a bug or not as it is not in patch notes or listed here) . I will say this, 40 Defense rating rocks pretty hard on this already awesome piece.

the primary reason I like it is because of the complete resocket i had to do after getting this and the bulwark of the amani empire. Between that and all the other pieces from ZA I found a lot of lacking defense.

i consider it a nerf as i base my gear on overall stats, not 1 item. i stack my other gear for def/hit/exp/ pure avoidance (miss dodge parry ) and this one item allows me to stack the rest of gear for a lot more stam dodge pary block

Schatzman, I would have to disagree with you on this. Once a paladin is uncrushable, block rating is wasted stat. I have been uncrushable for awhile; I do not want block rating if I can get another stat instead. ( Uncrushable means taht my dodge +parry+miss+base miss+block with holy shield is over 102.4% which is 100% attack chance on 73 mob.) I do not want block rating at all. My holy shield 's 8 blocking charges means that I AM NEVER going to be crushed by a boss. They never hit faster than 1s or if they do, I'm dodging, parrying or getting missed more than half of it.

I only have 17% block chance. The rest that fills up the 102.4% (100% for level 73 mo) is dodge, parry, and miss., and block chance from holhy shield. This pushes crushings completely off the table. and my holy shield 's blocking charges won't get used up by a raid boss. (If the charges on warrior shield block or prot paladin's holy shield gets completely used up , the block rating increase is lost and can let crushings through.)
Warrior can take crushing 5-10% of the time because their blocking charges run out on shield block (it has 2 charges in 5 to 6 s with prot talents) as opposed 8 charges in 8s.

I range between 20 and 30% dodge depending on the mix of gear I wear. For MT scenario, I don't pick block chance items, I dont need to, It IS A WASTED stat once a paladin is uncrushable and its easy to be uncrushable with just Kara gear or even blue 70 gear.
The extra block chance, because its the larger portion of the attack table, is past the 100% on the 73 mob and is unnecessary.

This item has been in my bank before patch 2.4 change, when it had block rating and no defense.
NOW i wear it because it 's now better than Tankatronics. It has roughly the same defense/dodge stats with* 51 block value.
For the long time that I have been uncrushable, I go for dodge rating, parry rating and defense rating to increase the dodge, parry, getting-missed %'s and block value to reduce the dmg when I block, and when I MT, I dont take crushing blows on a boss assuming I spam holy shield. I have wws reports that show I take literally 0 crushings on raid bosses in SSC. I have raided as MT in SSC and Hyjal in several guilds.

I am going to completely disagree with those of you who say that 40 shield block rating is more important than 40 defense rating for a prot warrior. At all times, a good warrior tank will have shield block up, so there is no need for any shield block rating when you are over 25%, which block % should be at if you are at least 490 defense. This 40 defense is NOT a nerf for prot warriors, but instead a better placement of points.
