New in patch 2.3, this design is intended to balance the change to Relentless Earthstorm Diamond as of 2.2 - that change being that the 3% increased critical damage no longer applies to spells.

The requirement isn't as bad as people make this out to be. In fact, for a destruction warlock the requirement is actually pretty nice. With no +hit talents at all, we have to hit max cap somehow. And what you can't get in gear, get in gems. Even T5 and loot of similar level doesn't boast very big +hit, it's mostly all +dmg/+crit. So to make up the difference you stack pure hit (yellow) or hit/dmg hybrid (yellow/red) gems. You have very little room to sneak a blue gem in unless you can exceed the hit cap and have a socket set bonus that requires a blue gem.

Even though the Mystical Skyfire meta provides more benefit for destruction than the Swift Skyfire meta, the fact you need to have more blue than yellow gems for the effect makes hampers the actual usefulness of the gem. This gem does not share this problem. DPS casters can use this effect while still maintaining a normal gem structure.

Can someone post the math analysis of this gem - i.e. the amount of dmg it'll do compared to an optimal half cast proc (on a fireball or such) per minute.

Just wanna get the lowdown before regemming everything again.

Math time!

First off we presume that Fireball regular hit is 2000, crit 3000, and casting time 3.0, and you're a bot, meaning you don't miss a single second! You also have 25% spellcrit. (All fictional, just to show the difference).

With the Mystical Skyfire Diamond (5% proccrate) you cast 100 fireballs.

25% of them crit.

(2000x75) + (3000x25) = 150 000 + 75 000 = 225 000 total damage.(We aren't counting clearcasting proccs)

Casting time:

3x100= 300 seconds total casting time (without meta gem!)

Now, with the procrate, 5% of these 100 spells will have halfed casting time, meaning the calculation changes to:

(3x95)+(1.5x5) = 285+7.5 = 292.5 seconds

DPS:

225 000 / 292.5 = 769.2307... DPS ~ 769 DPS

Now, with this meta gem (Chaotic):

12 Spell Critical rating = 0.7 %

So, yet again, you cast 100 fireballs, 2000 regular damage, 3090 critical damage (+3%) and your spellcrit is 25.7 (Making this a round number for the calcultion, to 26% spellcrit).

Damage:

(2000x74)+(3090x26) = 148000 + 80340 = 228 340 damage

Casting time:

3x100 = 300 seconds

DPS:

228 340 / 300 = 761.133333... ~ 761 DPS

So, from this you get that the Mystical Skyfire Diamond gives you 6 more DPS.

Any idea on if this will affect healing crits too? The tooltip says 3% to damage (melee damage if you read the buff description) but it may only say that for brevity.

Also remember:

1.) Mystical Skyfire is getting a cooldown, I haven't tested it - but I assume it's going to inhibit back to back procs.

2.) The gem reqs are incredibly less restrictive on this gem. I wear about 8-10 gems normally - having only two blues, instead of 6, is going to be wonderful.

Ok, new question for those that can do the math so well.

They are sinking the MSD, so that's out. is it time to retire the meta gem helm and go back to the spellstrike helm?

given the proc from the spellstrike set, whats the analysis between CSD/MSD/spellstrike set. which one is best?

Im thinking spellstrike set is best to go back to with the 92dmg proc, but just wanna make sure.

also is there a place for mages like shadowpriest.com where the gear is ranked by mathmatical analysis for each selection?

Bare in mind that it's only 3% of your 'critial damage'.. so work out typically what your total crit damage is.. For example a typical Arcane Missile crit for me is 1700.. 700 damage is the crit. 3% of 700 21 damage.. If i'm lucky that's 42 additional damage per arcane missile.

Ask yourself this. Over a period of 45 seconds.. how many spells you can cast, and how much 'critical' damage you will generate over that time. Now work out how much extra dps you would get from the MSD and compare.

If you think this Item does not raise your DPS substantially like nickolina does, calculate this: This Item will raise you overall DPS by approx 0.03x your crit rate. If you have a crit rate of 30% (and if you are3 in a raid and are buffed you better have 30%) this is about a 1% dmg increase, and this is not calculating in the 12 Crit. And this 1% is alot for one gem...

Several reasons why Chaotic Skyfire Diamond will be superior to Mystical Skyfire Diamond for mages.

1) CSD gives you more freedom in gemming. You have the flexibility to gem with hit if you're not hit capped or you can go straight damage. MSD hinders your optimal gemming by forcing you to have more blues than yellows.

2) With all the new haste gear coming out from BT and ZA, CSD will scale with the haste while MSD will not.

3) With MSD nerfed to have an internal cooldown it is very poor with Arcane. MSD is also not very great for Frost and if your guild is pushing for Illidan then CSD will be the much better choice.

In any case this gem will be very useful to destruction spec locks. Perhaps moreso than any other class or spec.

Yes it is THE BEST meta for Destro lock hands down!

I did some numbers the other day and something people need to understand about this gem. It gets double benefit from crit modifying talents (Ruin, Ice Shards, etc) so if you have 100% increased crit dmg from talents the meta will be doubled in value:

No talents: 150%(crit)*1.03%=154.5% (4.5% gain in crit dmg)
With Ruin: 200%*1.03%=206% (6% gain in crit dmg) in other words a Destro / Frost mage are going to get double the benefit from the meta and because both frost and shadow destro are built with high crit the meta will be in use very often.

Here is a quick theorycraft:

6000crit = 6360meta crit
6500crit = 6890meta crit
7000crit = 7420meta crit
7500crit = 7950meta crit
8000crit = 8480meta crit
10000crit = 10600meta crit

Taking me for example (T5 lock) critting for 7k prepatch is common in a raid so lets continue to see how much dmg is gained overall from this meta.

Lets assume we cast 100 shadowbolts and we have a 33% (for easy math) crit rate with 7000 crits being average crit dmg.

1/3rd of the shadowbolts will crit or 33 (1 shadowbolt will miss assuming 16% hit) crit shadowbolts:

33(7000)=231000 unmeta'd crit dmg
33(7000*1.06)= 244860 meta'd crit dmg

We gained 13860 damage over not having a meta.

Overall with the positive scaling (unlike MSD) and the ability of the meta to always be active makes this well worth gemming for.

This meta is a godsend for me as I use lotsa orange gems for +spellhit and surely won't be able to match the requirements of MSD.

The +3% critical damage is especially good as it applies on the base critical damage instead of total critical damage. Testing on dr. boom with total of more than 100 bolt casts, Recap puts my critical damage is 2.09x normal damage on average (with ruin talent obviousl). Without the meta, the crit is only 2x.

Seems that the bonus is applied on the extra 50% dmg (crit untalented) making it 54.5%. With ruin, the bonus from crit damage becomes 109%, thus 209% crit instead of 200%

I highly doubt "3% Increased Critical Damage" Affects spell crits at the moment. For one, where is the "spell" in the name? Second if you look at the description of "3% Increased Critical Damage" it clearly states, Apply Aura: Mod Crit Damage Bonus (Melee) (895).

The link posted is no longer active, and I can't find this mentioned in ptr notes or wowhead or whatever. Does anyone have any solid information about it being changed to "at least two" instead of "exactly"?

Also, I would presume this means that, after I've got my two blues, my gem options are red orange yellow? That is, will adding a purple or green gem disqualify it?

This is Actualy a transmute item it can be quita money earn to sell these every 23hrs (CoolDown) it can worth quite a lot for mats it takes about 60g-90g and it can be sold for 100-150 g

ok i was reading through the 209% with ruin comments, this is a 4.5% dmg increase. if this is the case, this gem is pretty sweet for 0/40/21 or 0/21/40 locks. let me run some numbers by you in a raid situation, without the gem. now lets say you have the following buffs and debuffs on your target:
200% crit dmg
20% imp shadowbolt
15% sacrificed succy
10% curse of shadow
10% shadow dmg from shadow priest
5% all spell dmg from shadow priest
10% dmg increase from bm hunter proc

200%*1.2*1.15*1.1*1.1*1.05*1.1 = 385.72% dmg increase

now if this gem truely increases your base crit dmg to 209% this is what we get:
209%*1.2*1.15*1.1*1.1*1.05*1.1 = 403.08% dmg increase

notice this is also a 4.5% dmg increase, (385.72/403.08) = 1.045

so in this "perfect" situation lets say your shadowbolt would crit for 8000, the gem would increase that to 8360, doesnt sound like much but if you are a destro lock with high crit, it really adds up.

For Warlocks your crit is 209% (tested) with this gem and the math that blizzard uses to determine this is as follows...

With Ruin your Critical strike Damage bonus is 100% more than what your critical strikes are without it, so you take the Damage increase from a critical strike and multiply it by 2. Now the gem says 3% increased critical damage, which doesn't mean +3% bonus damage it means 3% more total, so you take the damage a critical strike would do and then add 3% to that value.

Thus

150% x 1.03 = 154.5% (Total damage from a crit with this gem but without ruin)
154.5% - 100% = 54.5% (Bonus damage from a crit with this gem but without ruin)
54.5% X 2 = 109% (bonus damage with ruin and gem)
100%+109% = 209% (damage done by a critical with gem and ruin)

This gem is also the equivalent of ignoring around 60 resilience (crit damage reduction). After the nerf to MSD, this gem seems more of a better option than before for PvP.

If wowhead link for that 3% Increased Critical Damage isn't totaly wrong, seems this aply to melee dmg. Wich make it wortless for most classes and specs except maybe retribution palas.

a melee has white dmg = 100 damage
crit = 30%
crit's hit for 200 damage

the melee hits a target with 10% crit reduction ( a lot of ressi.. )

in 100 hits you get : 80 normal hits + 20 crit hits = 12000 dmg ( 8000 + 4000 )

if the melee has 3% more dmg on crit

in 100 hits he gets 80 normal hits + 20 crit hits = ( 8000 + 4000x(1 +0.03) ) = 12120dmg

you gain 120 = 0,6 x " one critical hit " = "0,6% more crit chance" ...wich is something like...15 resilience " negation "

i hope i'm not wrong . . . ofc i will erase this if i am wrong.. ;)

I was going to cut one for myself but the gem requirement is to have exactly 2 blue gems. The problem with that is that most of my gear with blue sockets has a + Spell Damage socket Bonus. So to overwrite the 4 Blue sockets I have (plus the multi-colored's counting as Blues) I'm not really gaining much.

It's a great gem, If your sockets happen to work out for you.

*Edit* A recent Patch has changed the requirements to only need "At Least 2 Blue Gems" instead of "Exactly 2 Blue"

If partial blue gems meaning purple ones count towards the requirement. In 2.3.2 if I have 4 purple gems will I meet the CSD requirement?

seriously i think the whole "exactly 2 blues" is bull*!@#. with all the time and gold you put into gearing yourself up there should not be a requirement so specific. this now works with my pvp gear but not my dps gear. i'm pretty much stuck now until an epic headpiece drops.

yeah i know QQ some more but this really needs to be changed.

Ok, this gem just says +Spell Critical. Other Gems, like Destructive Skyfire Diamond say +Spell Crit Rating.

So, is it old school spell crit% or is the text simply not as descriptive as the other gems?

It's exactly as it says. It increases crit damage by 3%. Which means, the 3% extra damage is only done when you crit.

I asked a GM about this and his response was that the + 3% increased crit damage was physical - So after that I assumed this would be more for a druid spell caster who rotates feral etc. But I am not fully convinced - wish I could get a solid person to answer this at Blizz.

Ok gem for crit based players.
Ive used this on my Elemental shaman as with just over 40%crit I think Frost mages are simmilar.

I worked out if its worth it like this:
on crit of 3000 , 3% of that is 90
so at 40% crit is the same as +36spell dmg

Would you use this gem if it was

stick this in a crappy hat you were going to vendor, and use it for running back faster than everyone else after you wipe typing /train /train, no other good uses for it

I count spell crit to be worth 50% more than spell dmg so
Chaotic Skyfire Diamond12spell crit & +36spell dmg = 54 which is 1.5 more than Mystical Skyfire Diamond and costs no extra mana

dont forget the longest cast a shaman has is a full 2 sec.. :)
so halving that will make it 1 sec, GCD is 1.5 sec, so actually only 25% faster before your next cast, making that gem pretty useless to ele-shaman

CSD is a much better choice....the mystical skyfire will be nerfed in 2.4 making it almost completely useless..
