Got it after about 30 kills. The drop-rate is really, really low, but not as low as what it says. A drop rate or .01 is close to being that of a World drop, which happens almost never.

i started this at lvl 32 and 1/4 by the time i abonded it i was lvl 33 and 2k xp. i never got rod, obviously. i hope you have better luck getting it than i did.

This drop rate is insanely low. If it wasn't for the mithril and iron in this cave I would have abandoned this quest in a heartbeat. I mean one of the Yetis dropped the Crystalpine Stinger for me, and my first thought was "Dang, not the rod."

Has a VERY low drop rate - but I got lucky this time through the quest (about my 6th time doing it), it dropped off the 5th or 6th Cave Yeti I killed.

Just did the quest, dropped on the 8th yeti killed. The drop rate for the rod is in all likelyhood much higher than is stated on the webpage, but still very low. Probably still less than a 5-10% rate. Teaming up with someone will cut the time by a lot.

Did this quest forever ago, took me like 3 hours. Was leveling my warlock... picked up the quest at some point and I was running by and a yeti aggro'd on me... killed it... theres the rod >.> stupid quest.

Similar to others above me, this took only 3 kills. After reading the first few comments I was tucking in for a long night but it dropped straight away...

advice on the drop rates for the rod: it's really unpredictable. with my shammy, i got it after 10 kills. with my priest, the other night i killed yeti for 2 hours didn't get it, logged out. this morning on the second kill i got the rod. both times i got it, i was the only one in the cave. just have time to give to this quest.

I've been farming here for 30 minutes, still no drop. However, being a skinner and miner I can expect much profit from this.
At level 31, I get about 20k xp/hour in here...

Hours of grinding and no drop; maxed out skinning, made many stacks of Medium Leather and quite a few of Heavy Leather, plus hides. Will try again later, but I believe there might a glitch with this quest, some people mentioned relogging repeatedly to get the rod to drop?

Probably just luck, but logging seemed to help.

After 37 kills (26 cave yeti, 11 ferocious), I logged out while still in the cave and immediately logged back in. First yeti killed after doing this dropped the rod. Again probably luck but maybe worth a try.

The droprate is higher than is says, because of it is so many that kills yetis, and only ppl that got the quest get the rod drop...thats why it says its so little droprate...

I've done this quest three times: once on my rogue once on my shaman and once on my druid now.

Rogue = Roughly 1 - 1 1/2 hours of yeti killing in the cave got me the rod

Shaman = After preparing myself for a day of yeti killing, the first yeti I killed (not even gotten inside the cave yet) drops the rod for me

Druid = This time, however, was not as lucky, and another 2 hour yeti killing fest netted me my rod.

So.. Luck goes both ways.
Hint: Best way to do the quest is to grab a 5man that all need the rod and just mow through as many yeti as possible as fast as possible. Once the rod drops, everyone can loot it, so its all good.

Been questing for this for about an hour and a half. I've gotten enough XP to get to 35 (about 20K) and enough leather for a long time (64 Medium, 32 heavy, 12 heavy hides, 24 medium hides) and saw plenty of minerals for miners (two mithril and a silver deposit). Not sure how many I've killed, but the leather should be a good estimate. Good if you're within three levels and a skinner or miner - otherwise I wouldn't bother unless you really want to or think you will get the rod within a few kills like other people.

Lvl 30: i begin with hillsbrad cave... i'm a miner and skinner, so it's a good place for me. I read thott about horrible drops, so i keep track of every loot i get.

Lvl 31: ding... entire lvl 30 spent with yetis... no sign...

Lvl 32: yeti yeti yeti all round alterac and hillsbrad, Frostmaw died a couple of times already... quit it, go to stv...

lvl 35: 130 medium leathers, 270 heavy leathers, 70 iron ores, 4 aquamarines, 2 shadowgems and 8 malachite later, still no sign. In total: 400 kills and 19 Iron Deposits.

I'm getting sick of it... although i'm pretty rich now :)

I didn't have quite the horror stories everyone else had. My rogue got it off of the first yeti. My shaman, on the other hand, got about 120 medium leather, 50 heavy leather, 20 medium hide, 5 heavy hide, 3 uncommon armor pieces, and 6 greater healing potions. It took me about an hour and a half that time.

Pretty easy to do, just grind till you get it:) it's worth it, the yetis make much gold if you skin them too

Yes - like all the other's have said - lots of kills before the rod drops.

In the cave there are 2 types of yeti - cave and ferocious. My drop came from the cave yeti...so ended up killing lots of other yeti that will not drop it.

The yetis are easy to kill, they drop money and they are skinnable. So, if you're a skinner; it's a delight grinding this place.

I'm a druid and did this at level 31. Kill 2-3 mobs in cat form, heal, back into catform, repeat.

I killed about 80 or so yeti in that cave..got 2 stacks of medium and heavy leather and quite a few hides too..wasn't terrible but took me about 25 mins..

It's all about luck.

I've did this quest on many toons already and i know how long it takes for the rod to drop. Earlier today, i did it on my 29 undead warrior anticipating an extremely long grind...

Lo and behold, the first yeti i killed dropped the rod.

I must be the luckiest guy in the world. I decided to log on and do this quest, since I'd been putting it off. I went to the cave thinking I'd be grinding for XP while I got this thing. First kill, it dropped - off a yeti outside of the cave. lol. Not that it matters (I guess), but I was on my lvl 30 Mage.

I honestly tried to find the rod for 5 hours yesterday, I pretty much gave up and faced the fact that I'd never get it. I went this morning to go kill a yeti for a Soul Shard, and what do you know came up in the loot? I know, same old, same old. But I was reading these this morning and doubting the people who said it was really there. I was coming to believe it was some sort of glitch in the game. But it IS there. It just takes hours.

After entering the cave and reading on thottbot that this was a huge grind, I decided not to do it. On my way out, the last yeti I killed dropped it. It's all luck.

My 30 shammy and a 31 warrior cleared the cave three times and neither of us got a drop. The xp for the quest chain is good, but it still takes forever!

Yep, just like everyone else, cleared cave maybe 2 or 3 times. Ran up the the snow yeties and BAM! 2nd kill I got the rod. Don't waste ur time on the cave.

hm, i dunno why but 10th cave yeti dropped it...

In quests its written that one of them MUST have it, so I decided to kill them one by one... first one I encountered in the cave dropped it. Strange luck.

Final count for me: 72 medium leather, 30 heavy leather, 8 medium hide and 2 heavy hide = 112 yetis deaded for 1 stinkin' rod. Went from 14% to 28% xp at lvl 34 with about 142 - 151 xp per kill and went thru 4 mining node spawns.

Would have given up if I wasn't so stubborn . . . and I do enjoy the show the quest ends up providing.

One toon it dropped on the 5th yet. The other toon I killed 80+ and nothing. Who can tell this quest is so hit or miss.

I say if it doesn't drop in the first 10 min give up.

this took me killing a total of 219 cave yeti's and 353 ferocious yeti's...finally dropped from a cave yeti.....took forever soloing. luckily my pet was there.

If it doesn't drop in the lower cave, try killing snow yetis. Two of us killed about 200 in the cave with no drop, went up to kill snow yetis and got it on the 3rd kill.

I just got to the cave in hillsbrad and it was a circus. A lot of other players there for the rod, so I went to the Alterac Mountains for those yetis and it dropped 24th yeti.

It took me hundreds on my main in that hillsbrad cave.

drop rate is no good. lvl 60 orc hunter, in full epics, with pet on aggressive. I kill each yeti in a second, and i brought forth a great culling to the entire cave 2 times before it dropped. ive killed like 150 of them in a few minutes, and nothing.

I've been grinding these damn cave yetis for 1.5 hours now.. I gained a lvl and about more than 1.3 gold.. And still no Rod for me..
-I'll guess i keep grindin' till the day my head hits the table, never to see the sun again..

-I'm gonna see the sun again! About 10 minutes after i posted this, then it dropped! Allakhazam must be blessed or something :)

Me and a rouge (level 31 rogue, level 33 mage) took about 15 minutes doing this clearing the cave about 3-4 times before we finally got the drop.

The drop rate was fantabulous, i killed at least 300 yetis before getting this, lvl twice, got 1 blue and 4 greens, around 9g, counltess mana and health pots, and probably lost a ton of brain cells in the process, i love you blizzard

I've just been none stop killing the Cave and Ferocious Yeti's for 2 hours and 21minutes and was tempted to go straight to bed, so as I was on my way back up out of the cave I managed to get one before I exited which made my night lol, so I ended up finishing the quest after all but in a time-consuming p1$$ take :/

Too low for my liking to be honest, quests like this kinda do my head in and beg for me to exit the game and not do the quests like that. The other quest similar to this was the Plainstrider beaks in the barrens for the Horde, the 7 beaks took a while to collect too.

Killed 3 lvl31 yetis and got drop. Didn't go in cave, killed the ones in Darrow Hill - Hillsbrad there is 2-3 walking outside. Maybe they have a better drop rate than the ones in the caves.

for wow classic can confirm its about a 1% chance to drop. spent about 1 1/2 hrs killing mountain yeti until the item dropped. unless u are really lucky with your rng prepare to spend about 1-2 hrs killing

Doing this is a group is beneficial as I confirmed that it IS shared party loot and every party member can loot it when it finally drops.

It does drop off the Yeti around the Growless Cave in Alterac, not only off those in the cave in Hillsbrad. Better exp, better loot, better leather, no crowd :-) I got it after maybe a dozen kills or so.
