The Oracle set was designed with multiple goals in mind. Just because it has +damage and healing doesn't immediately label it as a shadow priest set. Almost every piece has some mana/5 on it, making quite a few of the pieces (shoulders, helm, boots) better than their respective pieces from transcendence for healing. One could also argue that the mana/5 combined with spell damage make it the optimal PvE shadow priest set. And then the 3 piece bonus is a nice boon to healing when you aren't guaranteed your safety (like PvP or one of my guild's ZG's). Regardless of what it can be used for, the set looks very nice together, making it worth getting for that alone.

Yet again blizzard gives priests a good hybrid set with terrible set bonuses. While the poster above states that some of the pieces of this set would be used for healing also its primary goal is for a dps specced priest. The amount of dmg/mp5/penetration scream shadow pve dps but the set bonuses are healing.

Hopefully one day blizzard fires the persons in charge of creating such stupid set bonuses.

Let's compare the Garments to the same set pieces of the Vestments of Transcendence:

The interpretation is up to you as only your playstyle and preference should and will decide to pick that stuff up.

If you are able to get the Oracle it is very likely that you already have visited BWL and are able to get Transc as well. The stats are different. You loose all the resistances (on a per slot base), on the other side you gain "resistance decrease" over all schools. A loss? If you can get this set, you are already on a (very) good level of resistance. Who needs another resistance gear set? It looks like a supplementation set. If you get used to switching gear according to the situation, you can only win. No matter what specc you have.

My personal opinion is that you win survivability with that set (PvP ofc, but PvE also). 400HP can make a difference in the certain situations where you are confrontated with burst damage. Mana regeneration on the set should be better then on the Trans pieces (despite the 3/8 bonus of Trans); information based on the FAQ on the US priest boards. 12mp5 difference translate into 48 spirit with the "while fighting component" in it.

One last word before I kek out. A lot of people mentioned that this is a very nice or even a pure shadowpriest set. Obviously this is a pure shadowpriest set as only shadowform covers the damn ugly design, at least partially. 1/10 for style: Trans > Oracle.

P.P.S: "Kneebasher" Your picture gave me a good laugh' :) Was thinking exactely the same. I am shadow throughout all instances now and it works. Wouldn't recommend 7 shadowpriests for an entire raid, but 1 or 2 that know where their (un-)shadowform button is won't hurt.

It really makes me mad when I read all these posts made by morons who know nothing about Shadow Spec and what they can do in PVE.

My guild, who now has BWL on farm, has ALWAYS rolled with one shadow priest (me). Even when we were first trying out BWL, I was there with my shadow spec. Sure, in the beginning I had to heal a bit more than I do now... and when I knew that was coming I would switch to my healing gear and was a solid support healer. Then, when I dps, I'm ALWAYS in the top 10, and I beat many of our locks and mages; my real contention are the rogues and hunters. As long as you know what you're doing, and have the right gear, a Shadow Priest has just as much damage and endurance as any other DPS class. I roll with +36 mana / 5 and +320 dmg; with GBOW and a Mageblood pot, I never run out. Plus, I increase the damage of the locks by 15%. Now, my +dmg is about 100 less than most of our DPS casters; when I get this set, I am sure I'll be in top 5 for DPS every run, and LOL'ing at all the guilds who are too moronic to take along a Shadow Priest. GG nubs.

BTW, I play on a PvP server, and all the loot we get is just to help us destroy more in PvP.

Wow I'd love to get my hand on this set even for a day. I don't know why people hate shadow priests so much. They can heal well depending on how they play. And they can keep up if they play correctly/gear correctly.

Now...as for out DPSing a Mage/Lock...Hmm...PvP. Sure, seen it plenty of times. Locks aren't my favourite class to fight though, and admittedly, I lose duels to my friend Dev and some alliance members. In BG things are different there, things are more hectic, but I rarely die to locks...mages just sheep me 'till they feel like fighting...

PvE. Ok...unless you've wasted points in decreasing your shadow spells' agro (I hate pve-only talent points, so forgive me), I'd be quite annoyed with sum1 trying to out dps a mage. I might be second in DPS, but I'll be behind a good mage/lock 'cuz I KNOW...that having pain/VE/mind flay and mind blast going off on a target is a good way to comit suicide. I'll spam mind flay...but I watch it on the mind blast. Pain and VE are a must though...

Out of curiousity, I wonder if it would proc. on Vampiric Embrace heals?...I assume not, but if so, that'd be like basically 2% extra VE for the caster. :)

Am specced 14-37-0 and my smites are doing about 650-700 with normal 60 gear every 2 sec. With this set, I would get about up to 70 + dmg and healing, wich would bring the dmg to about 725 average per smite. I can still heal and kill ppl witout respeccing each time I want to PVP/PVE. Not mentionning I can have 2 set :1 for major healing, 1 for PVP and others for AQ, MC etc...I think this is a good alternative for pvping as a priest!

Looking at some of the posts here, I have trouble believing the people that are saying "YARGH! Priests only heal!" are really the level 60 Priests they claim to be. I play a Priest and I KNOW my main duty in a raid is to heal and support my teammates. I accept that, in fact, I like being a healer, helping my friends get their job done safely, I love it when my friends tell me that they don't have to watch their health when I'm behind them. And I believe many Priests feel the same way, otherwise, they would have rolled another class. However, I will toss in a Smite, Mind Blast, Holy Fire or Shadow Word Pain now and then if things look clean enough.

But, it does really suck in the way that I'm busting myself working on my .5 Set while working for my upper Tier equipment, just simply because of the fact that everything after the .5 is pure +Healing. Because for every little bit I like helping and healing, I do in fact enjoy soloing now and then, as well. And if you're saying by this point I won't be soloing at all... rep grinding, anyone? I don't want to have to have to drag a few of my friends to Felwood to help me grind for Timbermaw because my offensive abilities are near zilch.

So, long story short, I know I'm the super healer of the team, not the super DPSer or main tank or any of that jazz... but I'd still like to see more stuff like this, where I can make nice numbers come up that aren't always green. :)

First of all, AQ40 is not a 'normal' pve instance like MC, BWL or Naxxramas soon. The sets in AQ40 are more suited towards pvp or other less popular and less pve oriented talent builds. This set is a shadow priest set(even tho i dont quite understand the set bonuses). Just look at warrior set; #$%^LOAD of +hit suited for fury warriors. Hunters get arcane shot dmg and so on. AQ40 IS NOT NEEDED FOR UPCOMING NAXXRAMAS. You can do FINE(or actually BETTER in most cases) with tier2 sets from BWL, rag and ony if you are going to Naxxramas(or any pve encounters actually).

Secondly, whoever said shadow spec is not viable option in endgame pve, is totally wrong. I've seen shadowpriest topping dmg meters in BWL, MC and AQ. Many people seem to have an impression that shadow priest are only the kind of people who say "i'm shadow i can't heal" and yes i hate them too, THEY are not viable anywhere! Well played shadowpriest can take a damagedealer spot in raids instead, deal awesome damage without pulling aggro(aggro reducing talents, anyone?) and giving your lovely locks a 15% boost as well AND on top of that, if things are starting to get hot, get out of shadowform and heal.

I am a level 60 Shadow Priest who does MC/Onyxia/ZG(Occasionally). I rank either #1-3 on the Healing Charts. I hate shadow priests who say they can't heal due to their specc, learn to play the class and conserve mana, it is needed without being fully holy/disc specced. I spent only 31 points in Shadow just for Shadowform and get annoyed when other shadow priests blow all their points in the tree for crap talents(I can live without Shadow Weaving and Spirit Tap and most of Shadow Reach(all but 1 point.))Now, I got my shot a couple of weeks ago in ZG to be full out DPS, I ranked second only next to a mage. My DPS then went down cause one of our priests left and I needed to switch to healing. So, for all of your noobs who either can't play the class right or don't believe in what Shadow Priests can do, better reconsider your opinion.

I was shadow spec for a long time and defended it for ever. BUT the truth is, end raids need you "more" as a holy/disc healer.

Blizzard's design of the Priest is to be the best healer NOT the best DPS.

Shadow spec'd is not designed to be the main DPS. Yes, you have "options" just like druids and pallies have an option to heal but will never out heal a priest who is holy/disc spec.

This is why blizzard tells to you read the classes carefully before choosing one. If you want to be the top dps most likely you'll have an �easier� time doing it with another class than a shadow spec priest.

When people select a priest class to play, I highly doubt most priests are thinking "Damage, damage, damage" If that was the case anyone who wanted to do top damage would be a priest?

Priests objectives are more defensive strategies for a group. It take a certain type of person to play a priest character. You need defense and offense in this game, priests are designed to be "more effective" defensively.

Shadow spec priests who post on here saying they out dps all the other classes are either not in a very good raid group (the other players suck at playing their class
) or they are one of the few (.01%) uber. I�ve yet to see a shadow spec priest be the top dps. And only few times I�ve seen them being near the top only because the rogue, lock, mage or pally was afk for half the time or they just sucked.

Druids suck, I�m sick and tired of seeing druids bull@#$% sets drop like a %^&*ing bad habit.

i have a lvl 60 undead shadow priest on sargeras. i wear a lot of pvp gear (legionnaire). when i get into a group for an instance i let them decide what they want me to do. i have healing and dps/pvp gear. I have been every main spec as a priest holy/disc, disc/holy, shadow/disc. u people who say that a shadow priest isnt good for pve are idiots. when it comes down to it the person playing is what really matters. i can outheal holy priests in raids and out dps almost any class except a well gear'd mage. When i wear my dmg gear i have 67 mana per tick and 324 added dmg. in healing gear i can get up to over 100 mana per tick in a raid.

I love raiding as a shadow priest. All the locks love me too. When i was only specced in shadow up to shadow weaving and then specced into power infusion it was sick. The locks would be getting 2000+ non crit shadow bolts all the time. But then they would pull aggro and die much to my amusement :P They began demanding that they only be infused upon thier request cause they always died.

Dress up your shadow priest like a regular warlock. Get a tier 2 kit, 500 spell dmg.

Mind Flay rank 6 will tick 500.
SW:P will deal 3000 over 24 seconds.

You will draw aggro like a normal warlock.

What an odd thing to say :P The priest tier2 (Transcendence) only has +healing. And btw, why is it that ALL threads on Thott about priest gear becomes a shadow vs. holy?

Any moron, no matter gear and spec, can be first on healing list when you do that. Try this: Reset the healing list right before a boss fight and look at the numbers after the fight...you know damn well that the holy priest next to you will outheal you. But you won't reset the list...now will you? Because then you can't post the list when raid is over to show that YOU, the 1337 shadow priest, is THE best healer in your guild.
Sounds familiar?

Now, I'm just lvl 43, and I am disc specced. I feel that we disc priests are totally forgotten. Yes, we don't deal as good damage as a shadow priest, no, we can't heal better than holy, however I think that this build is by far the best, and as it looks now I will be disc when I am lvl 60 too. The defence is my strongest point, and so far I have gotten very complimented for my healing. I can do good enough damage in solo PvE and I don't do PvP since I play on a RP server and frankly PvP doesn't fit with me characters personality.

Now, this does not havea lot with this set to do, more that I just think it would be good for me when I reach lvl 60 and got really tired of reading lots of people comparing holy and shadow and totally forgetting about the third tree that has really good things for people who want to be flexible in their playing. I use it because I love healing, and still wants to be able to be on my own.

I'm a Holy/disc priest, and I'm out to argue the fact that if you spec right, you can have excellent healing, and good dps as a holy priest. The % of spirit to healing and damage is nice soloing and healing, not to mention the wands increase (if you have a decent wand) is an awesome way to pull out 100+dps for no mana, with full mana regen. I use full devout, so my bonuses aren't as high as most others, but I can still pull off about 250 dps in any 5-10 man instance, even on bosses. AND... No aggro :O ZOMGWTF? I can crit for about 750-850 (which when I was shadow spec was about as much as a mind blast) with Smite, except be able to pull a flash heal immediately after. Holy Fire + SWP is also a nice combo to start out with Dots (yea holy fire has @#$% for dots) and you can actually take out groups of level 55-60 (non elite if you're soloing) with a full bar of mana and Holy Nova. Add into consideration 70 stam buff, which SPs might still have, imp inner fire, and a free cast every 3 min (very useful for PoF :O).

Example, went to brd for hunter recipes, all 60s, rogue hunter priest warrior mage, 2nd on damage meter, and main healer for instance, rogue had full Knight captain pvp *!@# and lobo dagger and some other 58-60 blue dagger, both crusader (naturally pvp $%^&*s). A total of about 5 min downtime for mana, The hunter needed rests more than I did. (get a pally and watch your holy dmg WTF fly through the roof with his holy% bonus damage debuff thing)

That's my 2 cents on holy/disc priests, Spec 'em right and get in the fight!

I just joined a raiding guild a couple of days ago...Most of the players are half tier 2 and I just have 5/8 tier 1. I am a shadow priest and get to do DPS, I ranked number 9 on damage in AQ last night and I was number 6 on Damage in Onyxia Sundaybut died early. :( So please, don't say priests can't do DPS. Not when I get a ton of tells saying how their shadow bolt crit for much more then it normally crits for. Shadow priests have a role in raids, and noobs don't seem to understand that. :)

i can't believe i read through that.
i am a shadow priest. i can't heal as well as a holy priest (i know, i've specced as one). shadow is more fun, yes we increase all shadow dmg, so not only do we account for 66% of a mage, but we add another 15% dmg on whatever dmg the locks do, so yeah, we definitely add a ton of dps. but if the raid needs a healer, we can be out healed by a good resto shaman.

bottom line: if you're a priest, play whatever the hell spec you want/can get away with in your raid.

I don't understand this fight at all...

It's like with all other classes: if you specc one way you're strong in one thing, if you specc another you're strong in something else. There's no reason for shadowpriests to attempt to outheal holy priests, because if they wanted to be top healer they should have specced for it.

As a shadowpriest myself I've no intention of being top healer in raids; instead I sit in the MT's group with VE on, doing about equal damage as most similarly geared hunters (I'd say hunters in general, but we have a guy with full tier 2 and, eh, the rest of us wear mix-matched blues and tier 1 ^^') and off-healing when necessary.

Sure, a shadowpriest isn't a super-important part of the raid group, but I don't think its viable to argue that we're worthless.

As a shadow priest, I'd rather wear the warlock set, straight up. In fact, warlocks always get the best damage cloth. Compare:

The priest set bonuses are pretty lame for a shadow priest. The lock bonuses will always be useful to a lock: 5% immolate damage, mana cost of shadowbolt -15%. This second one is insane and makes up for the lack of spir and Mp5 that the oracle set offers.

I have been shadow up until level 48. Shadow works best in PvP there's no doubt about it, and the healing that vampiric embrace does is good however, when running a regular instance, there is no way that a shadow priest can stay in shadowform and do a good job at healing. Mana efficiency is simplely not enough. But this is mostly known. So out of shadowform, what do u have? 20 points at most in other specs be it Holy or Discpline. This gives you up to 4th tier on each build. Now do not tell me that the additional 25% from your spirit from Spiritual Guidance and the overall 10% healing from Spiritual Healing does not make a Holy/Discp priest better than Shadow. It is possible for a shadow priest to heal as much as a Holy/Discpline priest that is definite. In my guild, there is a shadow priest that healings as much and even better than the Shamans/Priests/Druids. However, in no way is a Shadow Priest comparable to a Holy/Discpline priest specced for raids when it comes to mana efficiency. To compare different priests with significantly different gear is not a fair comparison. On the other hand, two level 60 priests with about the same amount of mana, one specced shadow and the other holy/disp is a large difference and I need not remind and priest who knows how to play a priest that mana during battle means everything. So in the end, who is better at healing? Who has better mana efficiency? Holy/Disp. Keep shadow for a bit and own up people in BGs but when u get to 50 at least, spec Holy/Disp and all of your instance friends and guild members will love you.

Shadow priests can heal in raids as well as a Holy/disc priest but for a much less of a time. The point of holy/disc priest is to conserve mana so your still healing at the end of a 5-10min boss fight. The same way mages will out dps shadow priests in the end using frostbolt and being able (with evocation) to not stop attacking until fight is over.

Shadow priests do have insane damage, mayby even higher than rogues, but rogues are non-stop until theyre killed warriors can go forever, mages and warlocks have nice ways of regenerating mana quickly while in combat.

Shadow priests may have great dps but they last the shortest time out of every single dps class in the game.

But for PvP the only thing that beats a well played shadow priest is 2 well played shadow priests.

Reading some of the comments on Shadow Priests on this thread, it seems worthwhile for me to add my own experiences. I was raid leader and #1 healer playing a Druid in a guild that started MC with greens and blues and downed Nefarian before I left. After Chromaggus, I changed characters to my Priest specced Shadow and have raided from Chromaggus through the Twin Emperors with that spec, also acting as a raid leader, as well as some of Naxx. I say all this to make a case that I am qualified to talk about not only healing, Priests, and the Shadow spec in end-game instances, but raid mechanics in general. I wholly believe the spec is a viable hybrid in end-game instances, albeit a specialized one.

Shadow Priests contribute two things to a raid, one of which is unique. The first and most obvious, Shadow Vulnerability (and in BC Misery), increases the damage potential of the Warlock class (and in BC of all caster classes). This debuff can be applied while DPSing or healing (spam Rank1 SW:P or Mind Flay), and therefore is a perpetual consequence of having a SP in the raid. Upkeep of Shadow Vulnerability is trivial (40 mana / 15 seconds) at all times.

In addition, Shadow Priests are a very viable DPS class. I don't believe they are more viable for the role than pure DPS classes like Mages and Warlocks (I belive when full potential is realized, the latter two will surpass the SP in terms of DPS) much in part due to itemization and endurance issues (no Life Tap / Evocation), but they can justify themselves in a DPS role. More importantly, though, they can justify themselves in a healing role as well.

To be a successful hybrid, a SP needs to spec and gear for both roles. That means not taking some talents like Psychic Scream in favor of healing / endurance talents like Meditation. It means spending DKP on some healing gear too. Meditation and 3-piece Transcendence bonuses give a SP a strong foundation in healing durability, and by my own estimates a SP can output 70-80% the healing potential of a healing spec Priest when in healing gear.

So what is the value added to the raid? Some fights are endurance fights, requiring the raid to be sustained while DPS is dealt. The rate of DPS is not as relevant as healer classes reaching a point of mana equilibrium where they can maintain the raid indefinitely. In such fights, a Shadow Priest would don their healing gear and assist, contributing their mana pool to the healers and thus taking some burden off each of their shoulders.

In other fights, DPS is very central. Healers are either unable to find an equilibrium (due to mechanics or gear) or the fight is based off a timer; either way, there is a timer on the fight, and the SP is likely more useful to the raid in a DPS role.

The value added by the Shadow Prist as a hybrid is their ability to pick and choose which facet of the raid they will contribute to, and to successfully and significantly contribute to that facet. They can make this choice prior to a fight and become a full-fledged member of that role, or they can adapt in the middle of the fight, and (due to itemization) help support that role. That versatility is very valuable in end-game instances, as it lets a raid group modify itself to directly accomodate each encounter.

Oftentimes there is a point where heals are so abundant that one or more of the healers are just unnecessary, as the remaining ones can safely cover their burden. Hybrid players, including Shadow Priests, allow a raid to closely ride that point and accomodate as it changes based on per-encounter demands without wasting a player slot.

Not to get wholly off-topic, the Oracle set is fantastic for Shadow Preists (especially) and Priests in general as it provides a great foundation for both healing and DPS without requiring them to dual itemize. Each piece of gear with Oracle-style stats is one bit more effective a Shadow-geared Priest will be if he has to switch to healing mid-fight, or a Healing-geared Priest will be if he has to switch to Shadow mid-fight to address a complication. I am certainly working to accumulate as much as I can (have Shoulders and Tiara atm).
