Today we will take a look at the DPS balance in Castle Nathria during the week of April 20th. For this analysis we will use data provided by
Warcraft Logs Mythic Castle Nathria statistics
.
Warcraft Logs' Castle Nathria Statistics Page
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the
Castle Nathria Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs
under the Shadowlands Patch 9.0.5 partition at the 95th percentile for Mythic difficulty in the window.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1, looking at the data of the most recent week in the raid.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Spec Analysis for Week of April 20th
There was little movement in rankings this week. As the class changes from 9.0.5 settle in, ranking will be more stable, meaning the likelihood of movement is minimal. Only changes to be observed without any external influences like balancing tuning will be due to players starting to kill bosses faster, leading to changes on cooldown alignments, or new playtstyles discovered.
With little changes, we've asked for opinions from three spec's Class Writers: Fire Mage, Elemental Shaman, and Arcane Mage, about overviews on their specs in Castle Nathria for Patch 9.0.5. All three specs are very high in the statistics, but not quite reaching the highest positions.
Fire Mage
Fire Mage is one of the stronger picks for Mythic
Castello di Nathria
due to the damage profile and other benefits it brings to raid. Today we will be revisiting some of the reasons why.
In terms of utility, Fire Mage has the
Intelletto Arcano
and
Distorsione Temporale
. This means that having one Mage is essentially a requirement. Adding additional Mages does not add to the utility, so even though one is required, two adds no real benefit. That being said, there are other reasons why Fire is desirable in
Castello di Nathria
.
Fire Mage has always been a very strong defensive pick in raids due to its many proactive defensive abilities such as
Barriera Fiammeggiante
,
Immagine Speculare
,
Alterazione Temporale
, and
Blocco di Ghiaccio
in addition to
Cauterizzazione
as a cheat death. Because of this, Fire Mage is often talked about as being unkillable due to all its defensive strengths. Fire Mages also have exceptional mobility, but most of the time individual mobility isn't especially valuable unless there is a mechanic that demands it. Even so, it's worth noting for fights like
Ingegnere Xy'mox
.
Fire Mages are at their best in AoE or single target. Fire Mage has strong sustained AoE damage with
Colonna di Fuoco
and
Pozza delle Fiamme
for fights like Sun King's Salvation. Even though Fire lacks Spread cleave, sacrificing single target damage isn't required to cleave with
Maestria: Incendio
.
Inferno di Fuoco
increases damage at the start of the fight and is especially useful for
Picchiapoltiglia
. Thing Fire is best known for, though, is high burst thanks to
Combustione
on about a one minute cooldown. Fire Mage has no spread cleave Fire Mage damage outside of cooldowns is very low and the spec is very cooldown reliant. Luckily in Castle Nathria, these weaknesses don't really make much of a difference. In future raids this may not be the case.
Elemental Shaman
Elemental Shaman have been sitting fairly pretty in Castle Nathria since 9.0.5, and when looking closely into it it's not hard to see why. Our single-target was already one of the strongest sustained single-target dps for progression kills, and with the buffs in 9.0.5 we gained the AoE we were lacking to make use quite desirable in all situations.
From a progression standpoint, the most important fights are the final 3 - Sludgefist, Stone Legion Generals, and Sire Denathrius. For Sludgefist, Elemental takes advantage of our strong consistent damage and ability to maintain dps on any movement that fight requires. However, we're merely average there as our single-target strength is in our sustained damage rather than in burst that could be funneled into the double damage windows provided by
Impatto Distruttivo
. With the buffs in 9.0.5 to
Catena di Fulmini
&
Terremoto
, Elemental is able to shine brightly on Stone Legion Generals.
Custode della Tempesta
lines up well with the spawns of
Schermagliatrice della Legione di Pietra
& burns on
Commando della Legione di Pietra
which allow us to consistently put respectable burst AoE out on them. While our burst AoE isn't as high as other specs during their major cooldown windows, that ours lines up consistently with add spawns makes it quite powerful. On Sire Denathrius, our strong sustained damage and tools to maintain dps while on the move make us a strong choice for the most difficult damage check in the fight (the Phase 3 single-target burn) despite our lack of an execute. In addition to this,
Ondata Primordiale
&
Custode della Tempesta
allow us to do fairly high damage in Phase 2 on the whole.
From a utility standpoint,
Totem del Soffio di Vento
can be covered by Druids or other Shaman, though is worth noting as there are fights (namely Artificer Xy'mox & Stone Legion Generals) where having several can be quite useful to the raid.
Guida Ancestrale
also has limited use in scenarios where an extra minor healing cd may be useful like Sludgefist. Finally, though this is minor, Elemental is relatively tanky this tier. Between
Sentiero Astrale
,
Pelle di Roccia
, and
Forgiatura della Carne
we are able to easily handle most dangerous damage events in the raid.
Finally, while Elemental stock is high (especially with nerfs on the horizon for Affliction, Balance, and Fire,) expect rankings on warcraftlogs to fall a bit the farther we get into farm. Elemental isn't very bursty, and as such doesn't scale as well as other specs do with lower kill times and the stacking of buff spells like
Infusione di Potere
Arcane Mage
While Arcane overall has struggled to compete with Fire in Castle Nathria, there are some standout fights where the spec shines - especially later in the tier, which is behind its slow rise through the ranks. Shadowlands Arcane excels at frequent burst and execute damage but is seriously hurt by forced movement (as I frequently point out, this is a
terrible
weakness to have in modern raiding), elements that lend themselves well to two encounters - one of which is perhaps the most difficult in the raid.
Picchiapoltiglia
is probably our best fight in Castle Nathria thanks to Arcane's cooldown-based playstyle, with at least two of
Tocco del Magus
,
Runa del Potere
and
Potere Arcano
available for each pillar. We also do well on
Stone Legion Generals
, thanks to the importance of execute damage and the strength of
Bombardamento Arcano
. There's little movement on Sludgefist, and almost all movement on Generals is predictable, so
Alterazione Temporale
and
Corrente Ascensionale
are very strong.
