With the WoW Classic release date in less than a month, players are gearing up for the simultaneous global launch date on August 26th or 27th,
depending on where you live in the world
. In helping you prepare, this article will guide you through the
Best Professions
in Classic WoW for gold making, PvE and PvP.
Profession Guides
If any of these Classic WoW professions catch your interest, you can learn all about the most efficient ways of leveling each Profession, where the Trainers are located, as well as some of the best recipes for that Profession and where to find them in our Classic Profession Guides:
Overview

Types of Professions
Professions can be categorized by:
Crafting Profession
Alchemy
,
Blacksmithing
,
Enchanting
,
Engineering
,
Leatherworking
,
Tailoring
Gathering Profession
Herbalism
,
Mining
,
Skinning
Secondary Profession
Cooking
,
Fishing
,
First Aid
Best Gold Making Professions
If you’re looking for the best way to make gold in Classic WoW, most players stick with
two gathering professions
. These are my
Top 3
choices:
Skinning
+
Herbalism
Skinning
+
Mining
Enchanting
+
Tailoring
Why not
Herbalism
+
Mining
together? You can only track
ONE
gathering profession on your mini-map at once, which could cause a conflict if you have both and
Mining
. As such, many will pair one of those with
Skinning
to prevent overlap. Having two gathering professions is an easy way to sell your findings on the
Auction House
and thus make a quick profit.
However, players can also mix and match
Enchanting
with
Tailoring
as they are not dependent on having a corresponding gathering profession.
Enchanting
mainly functions by using the
Disenchant
on Uncommon, Rare and Epic quality items to produce their own trade materials, but is typically difficult to level up.
Tailoring
mainly utilizes various cloth such as
Linen Cloth
,
Wool Cloth
,
Silk Cloth
,
Mageweave Cloth
,
Runecloth
and more, for recipes. HOWEVER, with you can use your
Tailoring
-crafted items for materials to disenchant.
The rest of the professions,
Alchemy
,
Blacksmithing
,
Engineering
,
Leatherworking
, while still can be lucrative in their own ways, are more dependent on having a corresponding gathering profession to funnel trade materials to. And, ontop of that, will use up trade materials in exchange for leveling up the profession. The most typical pairings are:
Alchemy
+
Herbalism
Blacksmithing
+
Mining
Engineering
+
Mining
Leatherworking
+
Skinning
Secondary Professions
I like to think of
Secondary Professions
as supplemental. Any player can train all 3, and I do believe each have their own incredible value. In terms of making money, dual-leveling your
Fishing
and
Cooking
pair very nicely together. Separately, there are many fish such as
Oily Blackmouth
or
Stonescale Eel
that can be sold as is.
Other fish such as
Raw Nightfin Snapper
can be crafted with
Cooking
to create the powerful
Nightfin Soup
. So, in addition to your primary chosen profession, do make sure that you still focus on your Secondary as well, for an extra revenue stream.
Best PvP Professions
My Top 3 picks for best PvP Professions in Classic WoW are:
Engineering
Alchemy
Blacksmithing
Hands down, the best PvP Profession in Classic WoW in my opinion is
Engineering
. Not only can you utilize many types of bombs, grenades and other gizmos to aid in PvP scenarios, but you can also craft gear, too! I strongly recommend checking out Unique Engineering PvP Items for Classic for more in-depth information on the many uses of
Engineering
items in PvP.
In second place, I do think
Alchemy
is a strong runner up. With
Alchemy
, you can concoct potions that can greatly aid you in PvP combat such as
Free Action Potion
,
Swiftness Potion
,
Superior Healing Potion
and many more. Or, utilize extra stats from Elixirs.
And as a runner up, because you can obtain
Glimmering Mithril Insignia
from completing a series of quests with high enough skill level, I'm going to go choose
Blacksmithing
. Having a 30 second
Fear
immunity is massive vs. certain classes.
Best PvE Professions
My Top 3 picks for best PvE Professions, for dungeons and raids, in Classic WoW are:
Alchemy
Engineering
Blacksmithing
/
Enchanting
/
Leatherworking
/
Tailoring
Similar to PvP, the best professions for PvE in Classic WoW are, in my opinion,
Alchemy
&
Engineering
. I'm giving
Alchemy
a little bit of an edge here because of how valuable consumables (potions, elixirs, flasks and more) are in end-game content (dungeons, raids) - especially early on. On top of that, the ability to transmute certain items can be extremely valuable, particularly
Recipe: Transmute Arcanite
.
As for
Engineering
, it can absolutely help a player boost their DPS, or even assist a tank in generating additional threat using various explosives.
And with a tie for 3rd, it's really difficult for me to choose a concrete 3rd place. Each other profession has so many important uses in end game. My best recommendation would be, if you already have a guild, consult with the officer team to see what professions will be needed for end game.
Blacksmithing
,
Leatherworking
,
Tailoring
can all craft high end, Epic raid gear, particularly of note, containing Fire Resistance, important early on for
Molten Core
,
Blackwing Lair
,
Onyxia's Lair
.
And a few other examples:
Blacksmithing
can produce high end Armor and Weapons, particularly for pre-raid BiS
Enchanting
, though hard and often expensive to level up, can be extremely lucrative at max level
Leatherworking
can produce highly sought after pre-raid BiS gear, such as
Devilsaur Leggings
,
Devilsaur Gauntlets
Tailoring
can craft Epic raid gear, high end bags, create
Mooncloth
, and more.
