Christopher Chang - Character Creation
The Art of Warcraft talks about character design, mounts, armor, weapons, environments, effects, dungeon creation, props, etc.
Christopher discusses some of the new characters and creatures in the new expansions Battle for Azeroth.
Kul Tiras has some new characters and the land itself is a very dark land. Witches have been using the ancient druidic magic called death magic. Because its a druidic type of magic, there are large treant wicker type creature that walk the land along with wicker beasts that are made of wood and bone.
Zandalar land is full of primative beasts and ruins. Of course because they are trolls, there's dinosaurs! Giant brontosaurus looking creature that dwarfs the devilsaurs. Ancient gods that the Zandalari worship named Loa's, and not only that but Blood Trolls as well.
But this is a Battle for Azeroth and what is a battle vs the Horde and Alliance without some iconic new Horde Red and Alliance Blue armor to really represent what side you fight for.
Ian Lang - Animator
Ian discusses how they use animation to bring the art to life. From character poses, stances, to show their emotions and personalities.
New animations are created to really give players an experience. To tell a story something like a shady rogue leaning on a wall, nobody who is a friendly person would lean on a wall like that. Also drinking and booze! They work to give that one character who should have stopped drinking long ago to make sure they have the right stumble and drunken wobble.
Sarah Carmody - Effects
Effects team are the ones that add the sparkle effect to a boss that has loot, or the wisps of flames from you casting a fire spell, maybe the sparks from an arcane explosion. That is the idea of what the effects team work on.
Making effects are beyond the sparkle or shine here and there. The effects need to tell a story. Sarah talks about an old healing spell that originally, the way it was looked like a holy spell that was meant to constrict and just over all not friendly looking, and goes on to explain how if it is a healing spell it should look more soft and inviting and something that she hopes players would actually stand in.
Sarah also mentioned that Warlocks will be getting new spell effects!
Tina Wang - Environment Art
The Environment team works on things such as the things you see that makes up the world. Trees, Mountains, Rocks, Ruins, Landscapes and so on.
The Zandalari land of Nazmir was developed was created with a thought of it being a more primitive old world, with salt marshes and overgrowth. However there are some open areas that are much more friendly to the larger creatures that walk the land.
Tina goes on to explain how they want to make the world that players are in really feel they are inside this world. Especially in a world filled with hostile creatures, there should be places for you the player to hide in, or discover some hidden treasures, places you wouldn't normally find unless you stumble upon them.
Jessica Clarke - Dungeon Artist
The Dungeon artists are the ones that create the dungeons. Many things go into this, what zone will this dungeon be in, what part of that zone, what are the creatures outside of the dungeon area, why would you be here in this area to begin with and what lead you here. The insides of the dungeons need to take all these things into account. Is this dungeon going to be partly in water, and has it been here for a long time? Well then the buildings here would obviously have some structural damage, as well as rusting, salt water damage, etc.
Ashleigh Warner - Prop Team
Prop team makes things such as a mailbox, a chair, a chandelier, a vial sitting on a table. Things that you see that makes the areas look as if it is inhabited.
Ashleigh shows us that props created for the new Zandalari town hub, which is a full thriving troll city. Since they worship the giant dinosaur loa's you get the feel of that by traversing the city. They have some items made from the bones of fallen large dinosaurs from the area, eating large dinosaur egg. The Zandalari are a rich, ancient, smart but savage race. They wanted to give you all that feel with the traditional troll ruins but larger, and lots more gold and colorful mosaics.
Some of things the prop team does is the fun decorations around the holidays and somethings that wouldn't normally fit in the world, such as the horse costume. The prop team really has fun with the holidays because they are not permanent they can really have fun with it.
Lastly the prop team created some things, that no one asked for but they were made with love and have become loved by players! Such as Pepe, the Elekk and Raptor plushies to name a few.
