Devastation Evoker: Pyre & Eye of Infinity Tuning Explained - Single Target Nerfs, AoE Buffs

With a little over a week until their release on November 15th in the Dragonflight Pre-Patch,

Devastation Evoker recently received
some tuning
. Including the nerf to

, these changes are all related to

and it's usage in AoE.

Rank 1: Pyre has a 10%15% chance to flare up and explode again on a nearby target.
Rank 2: Pyre has a 20%30% chance to flare up and explode again on a nearby target.

At face value, this is a 30% buff to

, and a buff to the

as well.
Volatilità
is finally a worthy choice in AoE, although points are still very tight.

. On Average, 1 point in
Volatilità
will increase your natural

damage by 17.5%. 2 points further increase it to around 42.8% per

.
The bottom line is that
Pira
is now worth casting starting at 4 targets, and it is worthwhile to cast at 2 or 3 targets under certain circumstances, such as
Esplosione Caricata
. This means Devastation is far better off in AoE.
So

got buffed! Great! What about that other part?

At first glance you may be wondering how
Occhio dell'Infinito
could possibly relate to
Pira
, but its actually pretty important that this talent changes. One of the biggest reasons why
Pira
was devalued was

. Each
Scintillio
proc hits 2 targets with
Vastità dell'Eternità
, which means twice the chances to critically strike and return

.
Since
Disintegrazione
was able to generate
Detonazione dell'Essenza
but
Pira
was not, this meant that using
Pira
also meant having to cast more

s in AoE. The opportunity cost of spending

or
Detonazione dell'Essenza
on
Pira
was too high, and it was forcing a playstyle where we often ignored
Pira
aside from extreme AoE or high
Esplosione Caricata
stacks.
This is a very painful nerf to Devastation and mostly eliminates one of the biggest strengths of the spec, 2 target funnel. It's around a 5% damage loss to swap to
Causalità
instead, which seems to be the right choice for now. Our 2 target took an even larger hit at around a 7% loss. Overall this is a good but painful change, since it makes us actually pay attention to
Essenza
and makes
Pira
a better button to press to spend, comparatively.
Conclusion
The verdict is that Devastation finally got the AoE buff it needed, but at a heavy cost. In AoE it's hard to say the exact impact but we are far better off now. On the other hand, the
Occhio dell'Infinito
loss and the additional nerf to the Evoker 2p bonus (
Scintillio
procs no longer provide
Potenziale Illimitato
) have nerfed Devastation in Single Target and Cleave by around
8-10%
, and it wasn't exactly topping meters in Single Target before. Personally I feel this was a necessary change, and I hope Devastation gets some Single Target tuning to help it bounce back from this huge setback.
