Guide to How Wowhead Can Help You in the Prepatch, Wowhead Interview with Lead Game Designers 10/17

This guide covers some of the ways Wowhead’s database and tools can help you navigate the prepatch!
We’ve been working
very hard updating the site for Warlords of Draenor
and we wanted to highlight some of the useful features besides the general searches for quest objectives and post-squish items.
You can use Wowhead to compare your old and new character models, learn more about your class with our updated class guides, preview the items in the Toy Box, track your mounts and pets as you work towards

Character Models
One of the biggest features in the prepatch is updated character models. You can preview how your character looks using Wowhead’s profiler!
To get started, just do the following:
Go to
wowhead.com/list
On the left-hand side of the screen that says "Battle.net", enter in your character's name and select their realm and region from the dropdown menus.
That's it! You're now looking at a 3D model version of your in-game character on Battle.net, including hair, eyes, and skin color.
To return to this page, visit the
My Profiles
section on your
User Page
. You can also look up Profiles while not logged in and see a temporary list at the top right of your screen, but these pages are only saved for 48 hours.
We’ve added the option on Profiler pages to swap between old and new character models so you can decide which version you like best. We’ve also added the option to preview different emotes and animations in the Profiler modelviewer, which you can expand to full-screen!

Character Planner
For the character planner, we wanted to create a tool that not only recommends gear, but suggests fun things you'd like to try in game! The
Character Planner
suggests achievements and guides you'd be interested in, as well as gear upgrades and zones that have the most upgrades.
To get started with the Character Planner, go to
http://wowhead.com/planner
and enter in your realm and character. If you have a character in the Profiler, just click on the "Character Planner" option in the header and it will automatically load the planner for that character!
In preparation for Warlords, we’ve added a suggested achievements section specifically for achievements added in the prepatch and Warlords of Draenor. For example, if you are close to 250 mounts for
Cavalcatutto
, it will recommend that.

In 5.4, we launched our

For the prepatch, we now have two sets of guides: a series covering all the class changes, tier sets, and undocumented spell changes not in the patch notes, and an updated series of guides on how to play your class in Warlords of Draenor--including ability priorities, gearing advice, talents, and level 90 changes aimed towards beginners.

Talent Calculator
The
Wowhead Talent Calculator
is a staple of the site. We get an initial version up for the new expansion every BlizzCon when the new talents are previewed on presentation slides, and then release a more extensive version as soon as the alpha can be datamined.
The Wowhead Talent Calculator covers level 100 talents and Draenor Perks. A really neat feature is that it reflects the new glyph behavior for Exclusive and Specialization glyphs.
This means that if you’ve selected a spec on the talent calculator, it will hide all glyphs your spec cannot use. If you select a glyph that modifies one ability, then the glyph-picker window will hide other glyphs that modify that same ability.

Collections
Toy Box
A huge 6.0 feature that we love at Wowhead is the Toy Box--account-wide vanity item collections! You can start collecting toys in the prepatch and work towards the
Giocattolaio
achievement.
We have a special
Toy Gallery
with images of all items so you know what each vanity item does. You can reach this via Database > Items > Toy Box.
We also have a Toy Filter, the word “Toy” added to item tooltips, and a “Toy” classification in Quick Facts.
Mounts and Pets
The prepatch lets players work towards

The Profiler lets you track your in-game mount and pet collections on Wowhead.
Once your character is loaded up in the Profiler (go to
http://www.wowhead.com/list
and enter in your character's name and realm), you can view which mounts and pets you are still missing! When your Profile loads, you will see tabs for mounts and pets organized by Complete and Incomplete:
The mount tab displays a mount's source, and can be filtered by type as well (Aquatic, Ground, Flying).
The Battle Pet tab marks pets as
complete
if they are at maximum level and rarity. Pets marked as
In Progress
are collected, but are not level 25 or Rare.
Players can further filter by Pet Species.
When mousing over a pet, players can view a model of the pet, their stats, and their abilities.
You can further filter what sort of mounts and pets you’re interested in collecting.
For example, don’t want to spend money on Trading Card Game items? Simply choose to Exclude all of those items from your ‘incomplete’ list.
You can filter out items that require the opposite faction, aren’t available on US servers, are no longer obtainable, are from a promotion, the in-game store, or TCG redemption, requires a profession, and is a reward from a Collector’s Edition.
You can filter your collection by going to "Filters" at the top right of your character profiler and then clicking the options. This will automatically move some items to a "Not Counted" category.

Dungeons and Raids
WarcraftLogs
We’re pleased to announce we’ve partnered with
WarcraftLogs
, the premiere combat logging site. This website allows you to accurately analyze and improve your game play by displaying and synthesizing your ability usage, resource management, and survivability--plus combat replays!
We now offer a “Logs” link in our menu of icons on the top right of your character profile. If your character has been logged in a fight, it will take you to their rankings page on
WarcraftLogs
, from which you can view logs for specific fights.
Dungeon Journal and Spell Improvements
The Dungeon Journal now offers tips for each role in addition to a list of abilities. You can view this by visiting a boss page and then clicking on the “Dungeon Journal” tab. As an example,

to see Garrosh's updated dungeon journal.
As Normal and Heroic raids have flexible sizing (between 10-30 players), we’ve added spell scaling to boss ability pages. This works quite similar to heirloom tooltips--just move the slider to see what the ability does with different amounts of people in the raid. You can also change the difficulty shown on the spell tooltip on the page.

Items
Item Finder
The
Item Finder
is perfect for people that are new to Wowhead filters that want to familiarize themselves with the database. It introduces users to our most popular filters for things like gear, enchants, mounts, and professions.
Just select your level range, armor slot, and spec to find the gear you need! Or search for items related to professions, mounts, glyphs, and more.
New to the prepatch, we’ve added the option to select gear from Dungeon and Raid difficulties, as well as level 100 options.
Once you are taken to a filtered list of results, you can filter it even more using our robust selection of filters! You can even customize your stat weights further by clicking on “Show Details” to refine the gear recommendations.
You can reach the
Item Finder
by going to Database > Items > Item Finder or Tools > Item Finder.
Filters
As described above, filters are a great way to find what you need on Wowhead. You can filter for a particular type of data by browsing the Database menu, or clicking on "Filter within results" when you get results via our main search box.
Here are some of the more popular filters we offer:
Achievements
: Account-wide progress, gives a reward, number of points
Battle Pets
: Tameable, cageable, unique, what families they are strong or weak against
Battle Pet Abilities
: Mechanics, bonuses during weather, buffs, debuffs, miss chance, team abilities
Items
: All stats, BoE, BoP, toys, what raid difficulty the item drops in, tied to a profession, flavor text, removed items
NPCs
: Utility NPCs like Transmogrifiers, Auctioneers, Innkeepers, NPCs that belong to a faction, bosses
Quests
: Dyanamic rewards, reputation increase/decrease, daily or weekly quests, related to a world event, Loremaster quest
Spells
: rewards skill points, combat mechanics, dispel type, damage type
Titles
: account-wide and type
Transmog sets
: numerous styles including raid tiers, pvp seasons, and quests by expansion, recolors of popular sets, sources.
You can use multiple filters at once to narrow your search even further. For example, if you're only interested in achievements with rewards from Warlords of Draenor, you would select the "Gives a Reward > Yes" option, and then from the new menu that pops up below, select "Added in Expansion > Warlords of Draenor."
Another way to narrow search results is to use filters in conjuction with our navigation menu towards the top of the page. If you're on the main /achievements page, you can go up to the menu, hover over the … next to "Achievements > Character Achievements" and a list of achievement categories will pop up that match the categories in your in-game UI. Click on one to only see results pertaining to that category.
We also have more technical filters. You can search by data ID ranges, spell Effects and Effects Auras, NPCs with a certain model # or skin name, Not everyone will use these filters, but if you want to dig further, you're able to with our system! (This isn't a complete list by any means, but we're interested in just the highlights for this blog.)
Once you get a list of filtered items, you can tailor your results further by clicking on the column names to sort by them. If you want to only display results with a certain word, type the info into the "Search within results" box. You can also right click on a column's name and then specify the data term you want to see in the text box prompt.
Tooltips
Tooltips are receiving some formatting changes for gear added in 6.0.2 due to the new item bonus system. We have sorted out all of the ways you can modify an item’s tooltip in Warlords!
If you want to show augmented versions of an item added in 6.0.2 or later, check out the
Warlords of Draenor section on our tooltip page
. Modifications include showing raid difficulties, Warforged, tertiary stats, extra socket bonuses, and new random stat combiations.
You can easily get Wowhead tooltips by adding this code to your site:

Patron Users: Bag Scanner
Everyone is about the extra 80 bag slots between the new Void Storage tab and Reagents Bank.
Our
Bag Scanner
, a special tool for our
Patron users
, has been updated to take the extra Void Storage and Reagent Bank into account.
Here’s what the
Bag Scanner
can do:
View all the items in your bags, bank, void storage, guild bank, and reagent bank tab on Wowhead.
Share these lists with others or mark them private.
Use any of Wowhead’s filters in conjunction with items only in your bags! For example, you can filter for Mists of Pandaria crafting reagents and specify you only want to see those you have in your bags.
See on item pages and search results which items you already own.
To get the Bag Scanner tool, all you have to do is subscribe to Wowhead.

Transmog Tools
There several returning PvP sets and old tier sets you can buy for gold instead of Justice Points, so we're providing a quick rundown of our transmog tools. A more in-depth post will be coming when our transmog set database is updated to include Warlords of Draenor sets.
Transmog Set Database
Our transmog set database is one of the most popular parts of Wowhead.
Wowhead's
Transmog Set Database
groups together all items in the game by their looks.
Since transmog is all about visuals, this database is browsable with image thumbnails of each set in addition to the traditional text view. Mousing over each image brings up a complete image of the set.
You can browse sets by class with our filters. These filters include PvE and PvP tier items as well as BoE, dungeon, quest, and crafted sets:

Some sets have "Recolor" or "Lookalike" after their name. A Recolor set shows that a set is identical to other sets with the same name, but a different tint. For example, LFR and Heroic variations of a Normal set are marked as Recolors.
Lookalike refers to an identical version of a PvE or PvP tier set that can be acquired without any class specific gear. If you compare
this T10 transmog set
to the
lookalike
, you'll notice the first includes Priest tier gear like
Copricapo dell'Accolito Cremisi
while the second set excludes Priest-only gear.
We've also gone through all the sets and assigned the sets Styles--useful if you don't remember the name of a set but somewhat remember where it dropped from.
Classic World Set
covers BoE and crafted items from vanilla and TBC.
Dungeon Sets
cover all gear associated with 5-player dungeons, and can be filtered further, including
Challenge Mode
and
Troll Dungeon
appearances.
Events
currently include the Blessed Undead sets from the Naxxramas Invasions.
PvP Sets
cover all armor associated with PvP and can be filtered further by PvP Season as well as additional sets like
replica Field Marshal/High Warlord gear
. Putting together a PvP set can be confusing as there are many items with the same name but slightly different coloration.
Raid Sets
cover all gear primarily associated with raids, even if some items now have multiple sources. These sets can be filtered further by raid tier, and also include non-tier sets like
frost and fire resistance
and
nonset pieces from Naxxramas
.
Questing Sets
cover quest sets split up by
1-70
,
70-80
,
80-85
, and
90
.
We also have filters showing the minimum level needed to equip a set and which expansion the set was first found in. So if you were looking up
Shadowcraft Armor
, it would show up as a vanilla set, even though later replica pieces were added in Cataclysm at the Darkmoon Faire.
if you click on the blue "Show Sources" button next to Quick Facts, you can see a filtered list of all the items in the set and where they are from.
In addition, there are many great screenshots and comments with weapon suggestions and other ways to make your set more unique!
Transmog Guides
As class filters are popular in our
transmog set database
, we have a series of guides covering all the sets each class can use. In these guides, you'll find all sets from raiding, PvP, dungeons, questing, and BoEs for a particular class.
We've also included sets that resemble raid tier gear, but don't require class-specific tokens, in case you want to look like a different class. For example, Monks don't have any official tier sets from Classic WoW, but they can still resemble Rogues and Druids from Molten Core.

If you are visiting an item's page, click the
Same Model As
tab to see all gear with the same style--perhaps you want to see identical armor that's easier to get, or a recolor that has the same pattern.
With images for all items, players can easily scan for which alternative item they want to acquire. Click on the image to view it in our 3D modelviewer, or click on a name to be taken to that item's page.
Image Gallery
We've added image search results, generated by our 3D Modelviewer, for all armor and weapons! To view the image results, simply click on the
Gallery
tab next to the default
Name
option. Clicking on an image will open up our 3D modelviewer, and clicking on the name will take you to the item's page.
We have had this working for weapons and armor for a while, and just added capes for the prepatch!
