It seems soloing Mythic dungeons have gotten too easy, so the Protection Paladin
TracerFPS
has upped the stakes by soloing Mythic
De Other Side
without a weapon equipped! Inspired by the other Protection Paladins who've been storming their way through solo clears this week, Tracer decided to make his challenge stand out further by removing his weapon, thereby reducing his damage and limiting the abilities available to him, making this a truly unique challenge run!
In the video, Tracer breaks down his approach to conquering the dungeon, from preparation to dealing with the various trash and each boss, both solo and with the added difficulty of not having a weapon equipped. Because Protection Paladins are capable of casting many of their abilities without a weapon, they're uniquely qualified for this extra layer of difficulty, but it still made many aspects, such as DPS checks and breaking through absorption shields significantly harder than they would be otherwise - even for a solo player. Like so many other Protection Paladins, Tracer is also a member of the Kyrian covenant, benefitting from the extra holy power generation and AoE silence of
Rintocco Divino
, as well as the emergency healing provided by
Fiala della Serenità
.
Preparation
Coming into this dungeon I was ilvl 193, however without my weapon equipped I was brought down to 182. In terms of preparation, I came stocked with a few
Tonico del Potere Spettrale
for strength,
Pozione dello Spirito Nascosto
to go invisible and skip some trash packs, and
Potenziamento d'Armatura Desolato Pesante
for some extra stamina. I later brought in some
Tomo della Mente Ferma
as a few bosses required me to change talents. The trinket called
Scaglia Schizzata di Sangue
which deals AoE damage and provides a large absorb shield also came in handy. For conduits, I mostly used
Parole di Protezione
for extra absorb with my heals and
Lucidità Risonante
for extra dps and holy power generation.
The sole reason that Protection Paladin is able to solo certain dungeons is due to its ability to generate holy power for spamming
Parola di Gloria
, the spec’s primary heal. However, one of the main holy power generating abilities called
Martello del Virtuoso
cannot be cast without a melee weapon equipped. Fortunately, the tier 1 talent
Martello Benedetto
which replaces this ability can be cast without a weapon. This is what made this run possible.
Trash
Most of the trash was actually quite simple to deal with. I thought that the large packs around the main ring of the dungeon would give me issues, as they rail me for insane damage even in M+ with a full group. Unfortunately, I could not use my invisibility potions to skip these as the platforms need to be cleared in order to comfortably fight the final boss. Using the tier 6 talent
Terreno Consacrato
which increases the size of
Consacrazione
and adds a slow, I was able to kite the enemies and spam enough heals to take everything down.
I had to clear all of the trash in the hall up to the first boss, Hakkar, as well because the door at the end cannot be opened until the adds are dead. The final trash pack required some good interrupt management due to having a Hexxer and a Priest which both have heal casts. Leading up to the second boss, I killed the first Drill and then used an invisibility potion to skip the next few packs. The Lubricators and slimes were quick work with good interrupt management. Leading up to the third boss, I skipped as many packs as I could with invisibility and AoE’d down the rest. The animals in this area actually deal very little damage and I was able to pull multiple packs at once as I would with a group, however my dps caused these fights to take a very long time.
Hakkar the Soulflayer
This boss turned out to be fairly easy and I was able to take him down my first try. My primary concern was that without a weapon equipped, my dps would be too low to break through his
Barriera di Sangue
ability. My output happened to be just enough to break through and get some damage in between barriers, however this amount varied greatly depending on what cooldowns I had available and caused this fight to be drawn out very long. The adds were very manageable and the total damage intake was not too high meaning I didn’t have to use my heals too often.
The Manastorms
This boss was the first major roadblock I hit with this run. Milhouse and Millicent Manastorm both have several hard hitting abilities that cause damage intake to be extremely high during this fight. After nearly 2 hours spent on 12 attempts at this fight, I was finally able to bring them down. I tried several talent combinations and playstyles and ultimately decided that
Vendicatore Sacro
and
Ira Consacrata
would be necessary to survive this fight. During the phase with Milhouse, he casts Frostbolts that deal a surprising amount of damage. I had to manage my abilities to ensure that I could interrupt as many of these as physically possible. He also summons power crystals that buff his damage done and deal arcane damage to the player. I had to intercept these as best as possible. Furthermore, Millicent uses an ability called
Laser Estremo Eco
that had to be sidestepped every cast to avoid a load of fire damage and a short stun. This phase was easily survivable with Word of Glory heals assuming I managed all of these mechanics properly.
The second phase however, the damage ramps up significantly. When Millicent comes out, she frequently casts Buzz-Saw on the player dealing a ton of physical damage and applying several stacks of a bleed. She also spawns Squirrel Bombs that have to be disarmed to avoid massive explosive damage. Her final ability rains down rockets from above dealing heavy damage. To top this all off, Milhouse sits up on a ledge casting Frostbolts the entire time. In order to survive this phase, I had to ensure efficient use of
Ira Vendicatrice
,
Vendicatore Sacro
,
Fervido Difensore
,
Guardiano dei Re Antichi
,
Mano Celestiale
, and
Scudo Divino
. Just about every major cooldown available had to be used at an optimal time to ensure steady self healing. After finally defeating these two, I thought I had made it past the most difficult encounter of the dungeon. I was wrong.
Dealer Xy’exa
I assumed this boss would be a cakewalk due to the tank’s ability to just eat every explosive, however there was one fatal mechanic I had ignored. Dealer Xy’exa frequently casts an ability called
Fulmine Arcano
that applies one stack of
Vulnerabilità all'Arcano
every 3 seconds for 9 seconds. Arcane Vulnerability increases arcane damage taken by 5%. After the 9 seconds, the lightning arcs to the next closest player. Since I am solo, the lightning simply arcs back to me every 9 seconds. This causes this debuff to stack up to 20 very quickly causing me to take 100% increased damage from Xy’exa’s melee attack as well as the
Stratagemma Esplosivo Localizzato
. At 20 stacks, the damage intake is so ridiculous that it can only be survived for a short time, even with cooldowns available. The only ways to reset these stacks are with
Scudo Divino
and
Benedizione della Protezione Magica
. However, these abilities are on 5 minute and 3 minute cooldowns respectively, meaning I would still have to survive at 20 stacks for an extremely long time due to my minuscule amount of dps. After several failed attempts, I truly believed that this boss would be impossible to kill given my setup.
I decided that the only way this boss could be killed would be with flawless execution, perfect Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding time, perfect timing of additional cooldowns, and perhaps even some luck with critical heals. I swapped my
Lucidità Risonante
conduit for
Richiamo Divino
which reduces the cooldown of Divine Shield, I purchased
Pozione del Risveglio Divino
to grant me extra healing for a short time, and I even bought an enchant for my boots that decreases fall damage by 10% to help with the traps that are needed to avoid Explosive Contrivance. Finally, I swapped the
Vendicatore Sacro
talent for
Intento Divino
for a steadier stream of extra heals. After several more frustrating attempts, I was finally able to kill this boss. With near perfect execution, I even had Blessing of Spellwarding and Divine Shield up at the end of the fight if I needed them. I healed a total of 2.18 million during this fight with an average of 4.3K hps. This was a huge relief as I knew the final boss would be easy.
Mueh’zala
I foresaw this final boss being easy to defeat and I was correct. I was easily able to survive each of the main phases by avoiding Mueh’zala’s major attacks, and during each
Frantumazione della Realtà
phase I was able to solo one Shattered Visage. After 4 rounds of this and one very long dps phase at the end, I took down the boss on my first try. Hooray!
Closing
In total, this run took me approximately 5 hours. After seeing Rextroy, Leontii, and Chitor solo
Theater of Pain
,
Sanguine Depths
, and
Spires of Ascension
, I knew I wanted to try one for myself. I decided to go for
De Other Side
because I knew many of the other dungeons had boss mechanics that would be near impossible to do solo, and I settled on completing the run without a weapon to make this feat stand out among the others. This is definitely the hardest thing I’ve done in WoW so far, and despite the hours of frustration I am quite proud of the accomplishment!
