So you've just come back to World of Warcraft after a break, you log in, you put all those odd abilities that you barely even recognize on your bars, and jump on into Battle for Azeroth, ready to battle, For Azeroth! But wait.... What is this gear with nasty effects? I need another Legendary Cloak? I think I have one in my bank... What the heck happened to the Vale now...
Well worry not, friend, we are here to help. Here are the things you need to do to understand your brand new Legendary Cloak, Horrific Visions, Assaults, and the Corruption system.
If you are coming back to 8.3, N'Zoth is busy invading Azeroth and you will need to get another
Legendary Cloak
from Wrathion to combat the Old God's sanity sapping superpowers. This isn't the same cloak that you got from little Wrathion in Pandaria. This is all-grown-up Wrathion Legendary Cloak 2.0,
Ashjra'kamas, Manto della Risolutezza
. There is a pretty extensive questline to get your cloak. For Horde, you pick up the first quest,
Il ritorno del Principe Nero
, from Valeera Sanguinar at the Great Seal in Dazar'alor. For Alliance, you are summoned by
Un consigliere indesiderato
to talk to King Anduin in Stormwind. Give yourself time, many reported that it took a few hours for them to work through the questline. If you are an altoholic, however, there are ways to shorten this after your first time through. Check out our guide to getting your alts ready here:
Patch 8.3 for Alts
But if this is your first time doing this content, this is for you. The Legendary Cloak is integrally tied to Horrific Visions of N'Zoth, Visions of N'Zoth Assaults, and the Corruption system. This is a top level overview of all four systems and should get you on your way to winning the Battle for Azeroth.
Now, first things first. Do you HAVE to get the cloak? Technically, no, if you just want to farm mats and chat with friends. If you want to participate in any meaningful content, then yes, you need it. Here is why you WANT to get the cloak:
The new content in the game at this point is tuned for you to have your cloak; it's the best back in the game.
It's upgradable.
It has some nice abilities.
The cloak is required for the Carapace of N'Zoth fight in the raid,
Ny'alotha, the Waking City
, in fact you even can't queue for LFR without it.
The cloak allows you to take advantage of
Corrupted Gear
- more on that in a minute.
The only downside is that if you are an Engineer, you can't enchant it with the Goblin Glider. There's always something.
The Anatomy of Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve, the Legendary Cloak
Ashjra'kamas doesn't have as many moving parts as the
Heart of Azeroth
, nor even as
Azerite Gear
. But it still has parts and here they are:
The Anatomy of Your Cloak
Rank
: There are 15 ranks. As Ranks are gained, the cloak increases in Item Level, Corruption Resistance, and Sanity Loss Reduction.
Item Level
: This starts at 470 and maxes at 500.
Corruption Resistance
: This starts at 5 and can be increased by using
Nucleo Malefico
s obtained from a Horrific Vision full clear or a N'Zoth kill. This is required to counteract the effects of corrupted gear.
On Equip
: Sanity loss reduction inside Visions of N'Zoth. This starts at 20% and maxes at 80%.
On Equip
: Gained at Rank 12, a main stat proc:
Potenziamento Draconico
.
On Use
: Dispel a corruption effect. Gained at Rank 6.
Upgrading the Legendary Cloak...
Now you have your cloak and you are familiar with its basic layout, what is next? Next is upgrading your Rank 1 cloak to a Rank 15 Cloak. Here are the steps:
Accept a quest
from Wrathion's to look for items in a Horrific Vision.
Purchase a
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
from Wrathion for or from MOTHER for . You may also receive a
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
as a quest reward from a Visions of N'Zoth Assault.
Use the
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
to
enter and complete a Horrific Vision
.
Turn in your quest
to Wrathion. He will reward you with an item that will upgrade your cloak. Depending on how many times you have done this, it will be a
Nucleo Corrompente
, a
Nucleo Orripilante
, or a
Nucleo Nato dal Vuoto
.
Right-click the item in your bag and
apply it to the cloak
.
Access the
Titanic Research Archive
and spend
Ricordi Corrotti
to gain more abilities to make your next Horrific Vision easier.
Rinse. Repeat.
...And Paying for the Privilege: the Currency
There are three currencies associated with the Legendary Cloak and its workings:
Visioni Coalescenti
,
Ricordi Corrotti
, and
Echi di Ny'alotha
. These can be collected in most 8.3 content: Visions of N'Zoth Assaults, Lesser Visions of N'Zoth, mobs, rares and Daily Quests in Uldum and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and in the raid, Ny'alotha, the Waking City.
Purchasing
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
from Wrathion is the only use for
Visioni Coalescenti
. There is no cap on the amount you can collect.
Ricordi Corrotti
are used to purchase abilities from the
Titanic Research Archive
. These abilities help you out in Horrific Visions. More on that below.
Echi di Ny'alotha
are passively gained from completing current content including Horrific Visions, both Major and Minor Assaults, Emissaries, Raid Bosses, Battlegrounds, Warfronts, Mythic+ Dungeons, and more. MOTHER is the only vendor who accepts
Echi di Ny'alotha
, and will offer
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
, Rank 3 Essences for any Rank 3 Essences that you already have on a different character (Alt catch-up mechanism), and Preserved Contaminants as well as a
Nucleo Malefico
(more on those in a sec) in exchange.
For more in-depth guides on these currencies, how they work, and how to collect them efficiently check out these guides:
Coalescing Visions Corrupted Mementos Echoes of Ny'alotha
Beyond Rank 15
Once your cloak is Rank 15 you can continue to run Horrific Visions for
Ricordi Corrotti
and vanity items. Once a week, a full clear will reward you a
Nucleo Malefico
. This can be applied to your cloak to increase its Corruption Resistance by 3. If you don't clear a Vision, you can get a
Nucleo Malefico
from killing N'Zoth in Ny'alotha, the Waking City on Normal difficulty or higher. If neither of those is quite your cup of tea, MOTHER will sell you a
Nucleo Malefico
for .
The cap on Corruption Resistance increases by 3 every week. Check our News on Tuesdays to see what the current cap is.
The Catch-Up Mechanic
: You can apply two
Nucleo Malefico
s per week until you have reached the cap. Once you have caught up to the cap, you can only apply one per week.

The Way Things Could Turn Out: Horrific Visions of N'Zoth
Horrific Visions
are instanced content that can accommodate 1 to 5 players. There are two Horrific Visions scenarios, Horrific Vision of Stormwind and Horrific Vision of Orgrimmar. Which Horrific Visions is active switches with the weekly reset. Each player in the group must have their own
Ricettacolo delle Visioni Orripilanti
which is consumed upon entering the Horrific Vision. Click the gateway in the Chamber of Heart to queue for a Horrific Vision.
Here are the high points:
Each Horrific Vision has five areas each with an end boss.
The Horrific Vision is complete when you kill the end boss in the first section - yes, it ends when you kill the first boss last. And you thought insanity was just for your character.
When you are in a Horrific Vision, you will need to manage your sanity - it will be represented by a bar on your UI.
If you die (or if all party members die if you are in a group), the Horrific Vision ends.
If you run out of sanity (again, or all party members), the Horrific Vision ends.
Your first few times in, Wrathion's quest will require that you only kill the last boss - Alleria for the Horrific Vision of Stormwind, or Thrall for the Horrific Vision of Orgrimmar. Subsequent quests will require deeper exploration of the Horrific Visions. There are a treasure chests and helpful potions scattered throughout the Horrific Vision to assist you.
More Paying, More Privilege: The Titanic Research Archive
The
Titanic Research Archive
is a vital part of being able to succeed in Horrific Visions. This is a system somewhat like a talent tree. You can spend
Ricordi Corrotti
to gain new abilities to use in the Horrific Visions. Each time you buy an ability the price for the next one goes up, so collect as many
Ricordi Corrotti
as you can. Check out our guide linked below for recommendations on what the best abilities to buy first might be.
Until you have purchased all of the abilities, there is no other use for
Ricordi Corrotti
- so don't horde them. Well, there is one other use so you may want to keep in your pocket. More on that below. Once you have completed your Titanic Research you can spend
Ricordi Corrotti
to purchase items from Wrathion. These include Essence rank tokens, gem slots for gear, and vanity items. Access the Titanic Research Archive from the console next to MOTHER in the Chamber of Heart.

His Noodly Appendage: Visions of N'Zoth Assaults
N'Zoth is invading Azeroth - more specifically, N'Zoth is invading Uldum in Kalimdor and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms in Pandaria. That poor vale can't catch a break. With the invasion, dailies are back, and so are a few other systems especially designed for your currency collecting, rare killing, pet battling pleasure. You will have unlocked the Assault Zones in the questline to get your cloak so you know where they are and what they look like. Here is how they work.
First, to quickly view an Assault zone on your map, open it in any current expansion area (m is the default key) and in the bottom left corner you will see a creepy N'Zoth eye. Clicking the eye will open the Uldum map. Clicking the Eye on the Uldum map will open the Vale of Eternal Blossoms map. You may remember these zones form past expansions, but they have been fully reworked. The lay of the land is the same, but the features and inhabitants have now passed time and are in Battle for Azeroth just like us. There are new stories, new characters, new challenges, and some familiar faces.
Unlike Invasions in Legion, Assaults are ongoing. There will always be one active in Uldum and another active in the Vale. There are two types of Assault - major and minor. The major Assault is The Black Empire invasion. This alternates between the the zones on the weekly reset. Whichever zone is not currently hosting the major assault will cycle through 2 of 3 possible minor assaults. Minor assaults last 3 days and 12 hours.
The Assault zone maps have a great deal of information about the current Assaults.
This is the
Assault Zone Border
. All Assault objectives will be in this area.
This is the active
Assault objective
. Hover over the eye icon to see details about the current Assault. This one is the major Assault and will remain all week.
The blue exclamation point is a
daily quest hub
. Pick up and turn in Daily Quests here.
The obelisk icon is the location of a
Lesser Vision of N'Zoth
. This is a special daily quest. There is always one of these in a Black Empire assault.
The daily
Pet Battle
. Complete for fun and reputation.
The entrance to the
Ny'alotha, the Waking City
raid. This is always in the Black Empire assault area and therefore switches between Uldum and the Vale every week.
This is the
Assault Zone Border
. All Assault objectives will be in this area.
This is the active
Assault objective
. Hover over the eye icon to see details about the current Assault. This one is a minor Assault and will reset mid-lockout.
The blue exclamation points are
daily quest hubs
. Pick up and turn in Daily Quests here.
The daily
Pet Battle
. Complete for fun and reputation.
The
World Boss
. This is always in the zone witch is NOT hosting the Black Empire assault.

Getting Your Gear Dirty: The Corruption System
The Corruption System is a core system of Patch 8.3. This is the quick and dirty on how it works:
Each piece of gear that drops in patch 8.3 content has a chance to be Corrupted.
Each piece of Corrupted gear has a number indicating the amount of corruption that you will incur should you equip this item.
Each piece of Corrupted gear has a positive ability that you will gain should you equip it.
The more powerful the positive ability, the more corruption it will cost.
You will incur negative effects based on your level of corruption.
Your Legendary Cloak and some Essences give you Corruption Resistance.
The trick is managing your corruption levels to be able to use the gear that gives you the greatest benefit while keeping the negative effects manageable. Keep running Horrific Visions to get your Corruption Resistance as high as possible so that you can use more gear. The Corruption Resistance cap on your cloak raises by 3 each week.
The Real Cost of Corruption
Once you have Corrupted gear equipped, you will see this creepy
N'Zoth eye
on your Gear Panel. Hover over it to see your Corruption details.
Equipped Corrupted gear
glows purple when the information panel is open.
This is a summary of your equipped Corruption.
Base Corruption
: This is the total Corruption of the gear that you have equipped.
Corruption Resistance
: This is the Corruption Resistance provided by your cloak and/or Essences.
Total Corruption
: This is your total effective Corruption, ie. Base Corruption minus Corruption Resistance.
Corruption Effects
: These are the negative effects that you can incur from Corruption along with the amount of Corruption needed to activate them. Those that are not active are greyed out. These penalties are activated based on your
Total Corruption
.
Cleansing Corruption
Sometimes every adventurer needs their MOTHER. If you would like a piece of corrupted gear
if only
it didn't have Corruption on it, you can talk to MOTHER in the Chamber of Heart. For the low cost of , MOTHER will cleanse that Corruption Effect away, along with the beneficial ability that the item had.
Preserved Contaminants
Now, what if you have a piece of gear that doesn't have Corruption on it and you'd
love
it if only it had a particular Corruption on it? Well MOTHER has you covered; she also has a rotating stock of
Preserved Contaminants
that she sells in exchange for
Echi di Ny'alotha
. Her stock, which rotates twice a week, consists of six Preserved Contaminants at any one time. All available Corruption Effects at any rank can be purchased for various prices depending on their power.
For all the details on the Corruption System, including the skinny on the positive and negative abilities as well as what Preserved Contaminants are available and for what price, check out our in-depth guide:
