My name is
and I’m the lead moderator for the
and the accompanying
. I am also the Support/Community Manager & User Evangelist for
, the Auction House addon suite for World of Warcraft. I stream on Twitch for
and my focus is on mentoring and tutoring the WoW community in all things gold-making. I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
8.1 Professions and Hikons Guide
A final recap collated by Wowhead site director perculia on profession changes is a great digest of what to expect by patch 8.1:
Two new materials have been added for professions:
Respiro di Bwonsamdi
. Similar to
, they are used to craft new Epic quality profession gear coming with Patch 8.1. The older reagents, such as
, can be obtained through new transmutes from all professions.
: Obtained from bosses when running Heroic and Mythic level dungeons in BfA and used for crafting new epic 385 item level profession gear.
Respiro di Bwonsamdi
: Obtained from bosses in the new raid Battle for Dazar'alor and used for crafting new epic 400 and 415 item level profession gear.
Special Note: The
Battaglia di Dazar'alor
raid will not be immediately available with the release of Patch 8.1, so
Respiro di Bwonsamdi
will not be obtainable right away. The raid will release in January 2019.
There is a new set of crafted gear at ilvl 385, 400, and 415, including Engineering Goggles and Jewelcrafting Rings. These items are BoP and also require you to have the profession to equip them.
Most notable for Alchemy is new, higher item level Alchemist Stones and a new transmute for turning excess herbs into
Pozione dell'Occhio Rivelatore
also increases stealth detection.
Chefs can craft
Sformato di Miele
to slow attacker's movement speed, a new series of +Stamina food,
Sanguinaccio d'Orso di Boralus
as primary stat food, and
as an alternate raid feast.
Enchanters can create
, a battle pet
Maschera Tiki Incantata
, and new ways to convert reagents (
Scribes can craft
Contratto - VII Legione
Contratto - Brigata dell'Onore
--good news for those who need reputation!
Engineers can craft
Sfasatore Temporale Instabile
, an unreliable battle Rez, and purchase the recipe for the mechanical spider
Gnomeregan Battle Pet Dungeon
Scribes also have two fun Water Elemental cosmetic glyphs for Mages -
Glifo - Destatempesta
for light blue, and
Glifo - Maree
for dark blue.
Leatherworkers can increase the amount of Midnight Salmon caught via
Esca di Aringhe Rosse
In the final days before Patch 8.1,
has released his thoughts and plans to continue on his journey to 1 billion gold in a new Youtube video! Lots of profession related discussion and tips on what to invest in or stock up on, plus some insight on what he is making gold on right now.
Given a lot of the new recipes in 8.1 require
, the community has been sharing their data on scrap rates for items and calculating how much it costs to generate one Expulsom.
/u/trojanhoa started things off
I scrapped 1000 tailored
Bracciali di Lino Spruzzato di Mare
and received 161
. That equates to 1
for every 6.2 bracers.
I paid 10g each for the
Lino Spruzzato di Mare
. Including Nylon Thread, the total crafting cost for each bracer is ~102.5g. This gives an average cost per
This doesn't account for the other linen you get back from scrapping however, so
/u/rakrath added some additional stats
My numbers for linen, scrapped 20k++(linen bracers, only the green ones)
you get 0.16 expulsom per bracer
you get 1.5 linen back while scraping
thats 8.5 linen divided by 0.16 == 53.125
I round it up to 55 linen per expulsom
55 linen == 1 expulsom for easy math
It is noticeable that 10g each for
Lino Spruzzato di Mare
is particularly high, this mass production will be much cheaper on higher population where prices are hovering around 2.5g-4g market price and easily obtainable in Trade chat for 1.5g-2g.
What are we doing with
At an average of 4g per linen I've spent 73,788g on linen and thread, bringing my cost per expulsom to ~375g. I've also gotten back 1755 linen and 619 thread which in theory saves me 7,391g, bringing my cost per expulsom to 337g each.
I've been using the expulsom to craft the JC rings, selling the 310 procs for 7-20k and scrapping the blues, but I'm saving my remaining and future ones for the new items with 8.1.
I haven't tried the leather bracers for Expulsom but they are also potentially as good as or better than the cloth bracers.
Have been too lazy to keep a running total of gold spent on mats but the profit has been huge off of it. I’m probably close to 20k scraps total but only started recording late.
If anyone else is curious as to what I use that much Expulsom for, its dark moon cards.
Since I started recording the Expulsom, I've milled about 156k herbs, yielding me 20764
. So about 2.66 ink per mass mill.
If you'd like to track your Expulsom rates you can

How much Expulsom have you got stockpiled for 8.1? Which items do you scrap for Expulsom and have you tracked your data?
/u/RogueHard has been sparking some great discussions over the last few weeks
, with Island Expeditions and dealing with competition over the last couple of wrap-ups. This week they brought up the topic of mailbox and how we as gold-makers interact with them.
I am curious about how people feel in that last second before they open their mailbox?
Let’s say you haven’t touched wow for 24hours:
Do you log straight to bank toon or start with dailies or your main?
Do you cancel scan first and then go for the mail?
You are about to click that mail, what do you feel? Apprehension? Excitement? Fear? Lust? Apathy? A mix?
Do you have a routine or any “must do” things in your routine? Functional or Quirky? (Have to cancel scan, have to do AH searches first, have to hit all healing/defensive cooldowns and mount at least 3 different variations of the same mount while spinning and jumping?)
I feel maybe like when a you are watching a fight or horse race you have money on. It’s fake money so it doesn’t matter if you lose but it still stings like a loss. What if I click and it’s 800 Transmog to delist just to find out their was no sales. Could be a 1,000,000 Gold. It is literally this moment each day which is the peak of excitement in my game play.
/u/wunderbier456 shares a little about their own routine and expectations at the mailbox
i usually expect nothing at my mail and i dont care much, i just press open and alt tab to browse the internet at least every more or less two week i take a glance at my earnings with the /tsm window
i have a routine, but its not very strict, and sometimes its not always a daily thing:
log onto my main banker, get mail, post scan, shopping scan for cheap mats, send mats to crafters;
log onto my crafted-stuff banker, post scan, get mail or vice versa;
and every 48h log onto my xmog banker, get mail, post scan, do a "its missing at the ah" funcion with warehousing
and every 48h log onto my pet bankers at various servers, get mail, repost, sometimes shopping scan for cheap pets
My strategies and time available to play also mean I general post everything for 48 hours, that means I generally have everything expired in the mailbox when I log in to check for sales. Once I repost everything, it's time to craft if enough items have sold over the last week or so at which point I'll restock everything that is missing from the Auction House. Unless you're selling everything COD or through trade, the mailbox is where you're going to collect most of your sales and gold. Checking your sales and sharing them on Twitter or in the community is great fun and a milestone a lot of gold-makers strive for. Your first 'million gold' in one page of sales is quite the feeling!
However, I can definitely relate to the feeling of apprehension when you're collecting expired mail hoping for some profits in the final pages or at the 'back' of the mailbox. It's also a source of frustration as waiting for mail to be processed through 50 items per page is probably one of the biggest time sinks in the game, it surpasses any reputation farm, any transmog farm or any other activity that takes time since they all have an ultimate objective. Opening mail is just a massive time waste!
/u/ElCabrito shares the pain
Every time I go to open my mail, I recite a litany of curses to the programmers of the WoW mail system, may they roast slowly over a low-temperature fire.
The fact that it is 2018 and we still can only get 50 mails and then have to wait a minute for 50 more is simply ludicrous. I'm sure there was once a reason for this, but given modern technology and whatnot, they could fix this. I seriously doubt someone pulling several hundred mails to fill their bags all at once is going to bring down a region.
Sorry, rant over.
Perhaps, and this is very wishful thinking, the overhaul to the Auction House will also include some changes to the mail box. If the way items are handled is changed at the underlying infrastructure level it may also spill out in to other areas of the game like banking and mailing. To be clear, the collecting of items from one page of 50 mail isn't too big of an issue, it's the fact it's only 50 items and requires a 60 seconds wait time (or a UI /reload) to see more is what eats away precious hours of time over the long term.
This ties in again to my long standing idea of re-purposing the Void Storage, which I've mentioned before. The reason for Void storage to exist is no longer present in the game with the introduction of appearance tabs, so if that fundamental change in how the Auction House handles items - or the way items function in general - also affects other aspects of the game, I would love to see one item slot used per item and no restrictions on stack size. You'd have one slot for 1,000
for example, or another slot for 25,000
Lino Spruzzato di Mare
and a third (in my case) for almost 200,000 Ghost Iron Ore. You would no longer need to create multiple guild banks to store materials at scale. Sadly there's been no mention of the Void Storage at Blizzcon or in patch 8.1, 8.1.5 or 8.2 thus far.
Do you like to save up sales and collect all of your gold at once? Have you ever lost sales or items in the mailbox after letting them expire to the nether? What's the most amount of gold you've pulled from a mailbox at one time?
