You have to pick up Etherium Essence off the Ethereals at the Staging Grounds and drink it to allow you to see the Data Wyrmlings. Kill those and they drop the data you need.

If you're doing the Triangulation series of quests (I'm on Triangulation Point Two so it may not work for the others), you can use the Triangulation Device to give yourself a 1 minute buff that will allow you to see the Ethereum Relays.

It makes the quest much less of a pain because you don't have to bother with the intermediary killing of Ethereals for essence.

Be careful not to engage any of them if your buff is about to run out as they will keep hitting you after they go invisible again, giving you a free corpse-run.

Blizz and their well thought-out implementations :P

Useful notes: 1) This quest kinda stinks.

2) You'll need about 10 pots, you can kill 2-3 per pot especially if you can kill quickly.

Drop rate is 50% ish.

3) If doing this in a group, drop group before taking the pot. Otherwise, they'll kill it and you won't see sparkles.

Buggy-

I wasted some and some I couldn't loot because the loot belonged to my party member, who couldn't see the things.

After the effect war off, some half-dead ones I nabbed with a multi-shot killed me, and I couldn't see them.

My pet also could attack the same one he was on, but I could not.

While you are down there, Make sure you save a dude name "Captured Protectorate Vanguard" and he starts a quest to walk him out of that area.

A somewhat quicker way to do this, because the bodies disappear when you lose the buff, is to kill as many as you can without worrying about looting when you have the buff - you can probably kill 6 or 7. The bodies will re-appear and still be lootable next time you apply the buff, so spend that time looting all the bodies and you probably only need to collect 3 Essences.

This quest is a real pain in the A, u need to hurry to dot (or something) as many wyrmlings as possible before they fade away :<

possibly the most annoying quest EVER. as a ret paladin with a Torn-Heart Axe of Battle (3.30 speed) I was only able to max kill about 2 of these before the buff ran out. Also, if you get a killing blow just as the buff wears off, it doesn't actually kill them, they keep attacking you even when you cant see them.

Badly designed quest IMHO !

Originally you have to quaff the essense in case to see those flying
little dark fishes to gather 15 Ethereum Relay Data. The trick is you
can save all the efforts and just use the "Triangulation Device" that
you can get from the Triangulation quest series which gives you a 1 min

If you're in a group the best method I found was to take it in turns using the Ethereum Essence. The person that takes it kills all the Wurms they can find (they don't take much to kill, I'm a holy priest and I kill them in 2 Smites). The person who didn't take the Essence can still loot them, the corpses appear even if you could never see the actual mob.

This quest chain really kind of did it for me. Basically over and over in the same area, killing the same mob's. blech! It really spelled out in capital letters how lame some of these quests are. With the nasty spawning game design all you do is kill the same guys over and over and hope they don't spawn on top of you (nice long graveyard walk by the way), not my idea of fun.

Really bad drop rate on the essence too, I'd say one in ten for me.

Aye .. Essence drop is poor .. but did it using 3.
When you use one, start killing wyrms quick and dont bother collecting drops .. just use all your CD's and nuke as much as you can (i did 5 at essence). Loot corpses after buff is gone.

#$%^ing awful quest.

Had to kill 30+ mobs to get one of these stupid essences. Pop it and start rounding up eels with ice lance. Unfortunately for me there immune to frost nova, arcane explosion and blizzard which ended in a death and one of the longest corpse runs i think i've ever done. Thanks alot Bliz, %^&*s.

its not too hard - just rather annoying

did it as lvl 70 feral druid (not incredibly well geared so dont go off about druids being easy or something)

the drop rate for the essence wasn't that great for me, no matter what i killed. either way, i'd clear about two connecting areas and pop the essence and run around killing eels. generally pulled them with faerie fire and could get about 4 down per potion.

the mobs will present a problem, so i will say that being able to stealth really does help here.

I found that if you kill the higher level ehtereums (overlord and archon) the droprate for me was about 50%. On the lower ones it was like 10%.

Also, the drop rate on the eels was 100%.

Just a comment on how i have spent the last hour on this quest
1stly bizzard love the dmg u have given proc warriors, meaning we can kill 1 eel in 25 sec meaning we only need 15 essence, and add to that fact the repoping mobs ontop of us because if u kill 6 mobs by the time you are on the 7th the 1st is back up again giving u no room. My 12k health goes down by 2k per kill meaning i have to drink after every 2nd kill so i dont get ganked and if i find an alliance or mob next to me all i can say is shoo because my 60 hunter does 3 times more dmg than my proc geared warrior. The researchers are great too coz of their channeled dmg cannot be reflected and if you are being flayed reflecting it doesn't even stop the spell. Add to this the run back which i am on my 2nd time from storm spire and all i can say is from proc warriors thanks for this quest...draw your own conclusions at how i feel atm

Gah, TERRIBLE quest, due to the fact that if youre attacking an eel, and you lose the buff, he still attacks you while you cant see him, and you cant run anywhere, cause of all of the hostile mobs. Didnt get further then 2 eels per time, which makes 8 vials. That isnt bad, like 20 ethereals, but the fact that there are so many ethereals makes it hard.

To find the Image of Commander Ameer he is at Loc 56,38 you have to click on the E Tranporter Zeta and then he appears.

Not sure how I actually discovered this or why but heres a little bug for this quest.... rather then farm the essence... i was trying to finish up my "triangulation" quest... Now im on the second part so i have the second rod and cant confirm that it works for the others.... but if you use the rod you will be able to see the mobs you need to kill. makes this quest 10000 x easier

Kill the researchers, they'll drop the essences you need.

They seem to have a higher drop rate.

So incredibly easy, just kill until you have at least 7 of the brain dmg juice, drink it, go kill a bunch of eels, if it wears off, just drink another, eels go down fast, good drop rate on mobs and 100% on eels. Takes no time at all, stop whining

I didn't find anyone having a better drop rate from any other, but FYI you need about 8 of these essences, when you drink them it last for 30 seconds, and those things are spaced so far apart. takes about 20-30min to do this quest.

Here's the simple explaination...

Step 1: Kill random ethereal mobs. You will get a vial of liquid drop occasionally. This 'ethereal essence' is used in step 2. Before proceeding to step 2, farm the area and collect about 5 of these vials. You can always farm more later
Step 2: Drink a vial and you will now see previously invisible mobs, that look like mini mana-worms. Kill them.
Step 3: Loot the worms and you will get the 'relay' parts.

Overall the quest is a pain. The drop rate for the vials of essence is pretty low. Sometimes it was 1 in 5, sometimes 1 in 8 to 1 in 10. Important note, always keep one extra vial on hand when killiing the worms. You need to locate a nearby worm, then kill it, then loot it. It's not as fast as it seems, espcially if you aggro any adds. If the potion wears off before you kill the work it will keep attacking you and you will NOT be able to attack it back. You will have to run out of range to get it to stop attacking.

The quest is certainly do-able, but it is tedious. Better to have 2 people on it to make it go faster.

Alright you will kill any Ethereum mob and get a couple of Etherium Essence. Once you have about 4 of those use one and kill the neutral eels DONT LOOT THEM. Kill as many as you can until the timer is up. Then go back and loot them, their dead bodies are visible.

The best area I've found to use this tactic(fairly easy to clear and a very decent amount of eels around) is (57, 40). Lastly, don't go up to each eel physically pull them to you, use any ranged attack you can. Otherwise you will surely get adds.

They fixed this quest.. It used to be 30 seconds per Ethereum Essence, it is now 60 seconds. There used to be fewer eels, there seems to be twice as much as there was. The eels corpses used to disappear when your Ethereum Essence wore off, now they remain visible. The Ethereum Essences used to drop about 1 in 15 kills, they now drop about 1 in 2 kills.

There this used to be one of the worst quests in the game, now it's fun. :)

You need to kill small invisible mobs by drinking Ethereum essence, that drops from mobs, then you can see and kill them in 30 sec.

It's not hard at all.

Go to about 56, 37 and kill the ethereum humanoids there. They will drop Ethereum Essences. Collect a few of these and clear an area to work with. Once you got a clear area take the Ethereum Essence potion. That allows you to see the mana eel things you need to kill for 30 seconds. They die fast and you should be able to kill at least 2 per potion. They drop the quest item you need. For me the drop rate from the eel things was 100%.

One important thing..

When the potion wears off the corpses of the mana eels will despawn so loot immediately on killing the worms, don't nuke worms till the potion wears off expecting to be able to pick them up afterwards.

For the love of God...do not do this quest alone if you are a pally....I have spent 24 gold in repair costs because..."I can do better than everyone else"...Well, I can't.

You will hate yourself after you read all the posts then try this...

Good gear...it's not me...this one sucks. You should pass and go do one you can profit from. The drop rate of the Etheruem Essence is abysmal!

Came back the next day...got 5 Etheruem essences in a row and finished it.
I know all quests shouldn't be easy and I think other classes may fare better, but still wouldn't do this again alone. Too many patrols....too long of dead run from Stormspire...

I think the worms attacking after the essence fades has been nerfed...never got hit by them after fade.

Repair costs - 28 Gold
Time spent/lost - 1:46 minutes

Beating Blizzard no matter what they throw at you...priceless

The Ethereum Essences drops like 45% of the time, and you can easy make 2 or 3 kills with one essence with a 100% dropchance for the quest item.. so you need 5-8 essence for all the quest items, will take you about 10-15 minuts all in all.
