You need to kill the Nagas all around coilskar point, they will drop keys which open the coilskar chests laying about.

Keys seem to be about a 20% drop rate, and I got the fragment in the 4th chest I opened at Coilskar Point.

Person I was doing it with had to open about 12 chests... I guess it can be one of those irritating drop rates. Stick with it, the rewards are nice.

let' just say that I was less lucky, droped from my 13 chest. So I guess the fragment drop is just about luck. The drop rate oon the key seems to be as metioned above 20%.

The Cipher of Damnation is an extremely long quest line in Shadowmoon Valley. It is a prerequisite for attunement to The Eye in Tempest Keep and Mount Hyjal in Caverns of time.

After completing the quest, you will get a message in the mail from Khadgar. If you go to Shattrath, he will tell you to talk to A'Dal, who unlocks the the three Trials. These are prerequisites for attunement to The Eye in Tempest Keep and Mount Hyjal in Caverns of time.

I fail to see the point in "haha, got it on 1st box" or "arrgh, took forever." There is no need to keep posting tha same inane crap. The key is a random drop based on a % chance, and you can't pick the lock. It could take a while. The end.

Took me quite a few chests to open. But in the end; This might be a coinsidence, but there are 3-4 chests around Lady Shav'rar at 45, 29 where I got my fragment at the top of their base.

I dropped at 44,27 killed two Naga and an Elemental.. The second of the two Naga dropped the key and used it to open the chest right next to me to claim the Cipher. Thanks

Walked up, killed the first mob I saw, it dropped a key, after reading the comments here decided to try the chest near the named mob. I'm a priest so I mind soothed most of the mobs and didn't have to fight anything on my way there, aggroed the named mob and killed it. Opened the chest directly behind her, bingo. First cipher.

since 2.3 u may have noticed quest items that u need to loot sparkle (as do herbs, and mining nodes i think)

well for this quest that means the chest with the cipher frag is sparkly too.
i killed 3 naga to get key, opened sparkly chest and got cipher 1st try. i'm not sure if its ment to be the same chest every time but mine was on the podium near a named naga, aprox: 44,29

Once you get a key , dont waste u time opening all the lock boxes. Look for a lock box which glows. This will surely have the quest item.

In the last patch, they made it so that groundspawns for quests sparkle. I think this is something that they did by an automated process rather than manually, based on whether a groundspawn is *specifically* for a quest, because it appears that the chests containing the cipher are a different spawn object than the other chests. In any case, as of the patch you can tell which chests have the cipher, because they sparkle.

Incidentally, if you head into the cave system directly beneath Oronok One-Eye, not only can you get the keys off the naga, but there's an arseload of chests to be found. While you're at it, there is an Earthmender Whatserface who you can get a quest to escort out in the north end of the cave system.

Since the patch where quest items sparkle, just look for the naga chest that is sparkling and it will contain the cipher of damnation. 100% chance

after opening 30 chests (i dont want even know how many naga kills it took me to gather keys) i saw on thot scrnshot with that tower, went there and did open 3 chests... cipher was in third... im not sure but its highly possible that nearby that tower is greater chance for drop then anywhere else. 74,29

My first naga killed got the key, :], first chest it dropped. The chest did sparkle for me, every chest seemed to sparkle for me. Above there are sparkle theories, I don't think they're true unless it's a 100% chance. Coincidence may have been what it was. None of the chests had non sparkles for me.

All the chests sparkled for me, whether i did or did not have the keys. I tried all your golden spots and none worked. All in all like all quests like this its a matter of luck, not a golden spot. All chests are equally good. Got mine after opening 20+.

I'd suggest farming a few keys before you actually start opening, it goes much faster this way (in comparison to "getting a key - opening a chest" strategy). Prefered non-caster mobs due to annoying bubble of the caster ones. Plenty of those can be found at the gates, a pair at each.

Looted 2 chest near the entrance and went up to kill Shav'rar after reading this.

Just want to point out that you need only one key to drop... from a previous post "third key/third chest" I assumed each key was a one time use kind of deal... not so. Got the key from the 5th or 6th mob and opened only 2 chests- found it in the 2nd.

I'm pretty sure that the chest I opened was whiter and slightly longer than the other chests where I failed. Maybe this can be confirmed/rejected by folks doing this quest in the future. Kind of like that quest in EPL where only a certain shade of book was the right one to open.

After more than An hour and a half I finally got my piece. Drop rate for keys is about 45%, I opened around 30 Chests, my piece dropped at 54, 31

this is by no means a 100%. the key itself has about a 55% drop rate (for me anyway, 9/16 nagas killed dropped it). and the papers took me 9 keys to get. hope you all have better luck than me

I reckon I opened about 30 chests. Patience is needed. You may be lucky like some posters, but the drop is definitely random (I found my fragment in a box I'd already opened once before).
And yes, you do need one key for each box, not just one key in all. So there's a lot of naga killing needed.

I found a room in the cave, with 7 chests lined up against the back wall. I opened the one in the middle, and it dropped. Nice. =D

Well getting the keys was no problem. But the chest containing the damnation was a bit of a #$%^&, Id say about 19 chest's.

It be great if I was under 70 due to the grinding, But when you just want the gold it was a waste of my time. Watch out for the Sirens, Their bubble and their ranged attack really does suck.

Did this on my lock. Killed six or seven outside, then entered the cave. The naga are far enough apart so that ganging isn't a huge problem. Killed about a dozen, getting keys about every third mob. The first segment dropped from a chest at 54,18, which is on a ramp that leads upward. It's an easy, but annoying, quest in the chain.

Just did this on my paladin. Flew in, and killed three naga outside the cave, which yielded two keys. Opened the Coilskar Chest that was just to the left of the cave entrance, and got the quest item. No sweat.

Got mine at 46,29. Checked 52,27 first and there wasn't even a chest there. Looted every other chest nearby and got nothing. Went back across the bridge and got it in 2nd chest I opened.

Right here's an update. Since 2.4 all the chests now sparkle, also chests all look the same (so ignore the bits below). Took me about twenty keys, and I got it from a chest that I had looted about 10 mins earlier (they respawn), so its a random drop. Gonna require some grinding and some luck.

In TBC Classic, there is no sparkling chest. Just have to open them up until you get the Cipher.

In case someone is looking for up to date information for TBC Classic, none of the chests sparkled for me, not even the one that contained the cipher.

Seems to just be purely RNG based, got it after ~10-15 chests and they all looked the same.

As of Phase 2 TBC Classic, the chests do *not* sparkle. I got my Cipher Fragment from a chest that wasn't sparkling.

This naga filth is the sixth one I've interrogated today. He's got the fancy armor so I figured he knew something. Those other ones were useless.

<Grom'tor points to the corpses of the naga around him.>

I only had to beat him once and he told me everything.

The first part of the cipher is hidden in a naga chest at Coilskar Point or Coilskar Cistern, east of here. He says naga carry the keys. Kill 'em, take their keys and use them to open the Coilskar chests. Return to me when you find the cipher.
